Awesome stove , I've had mine for near 40 years , has cooked more meals than I can count , still use it ! I've enjoyed several of your videos , thanks for sharing your knowledge !
The head on the boys axe looked very similar to the old Swedish army axe, it definitely looked a better chopper. Thanks for sharing your insight. All the best.
Cheers Rob, that boys axe is one of my cheapest but best axes. A small American Felling axe but it's not bad for splitting the smaller stuff we have over here so works as a good utility axe I think.
Great review, I very much enjoy axe comparison videos. I remember when Council Tool first released the pack axe. I found it to be a unique design with a specific purpose in mind. Never did pull the trigger on one, but remember thinking a longer handle might improve performance although at the cost of packability. Overall though, hard to beat the versatility of the boys axe.
Thanks Joey, the CT Boys axe is definitely one of my favourites, I'm always amazed at how they can produce such a good axe for such a low price in the US. Not that I'm complaining mind!🙂
This was a great video!! I have been comparing both & your content really helped me decide to get the Boys Axe! Great all around tool with the extra muscle for light splitting as well! True classic! Camp Carver Pak Axe is good as well but less versatile than Boys Axe
Happy New Year! Thanks for the nice comparison. What a lovely office you have! I bought my eleven year old son the Council boys axe for Christmas (I wanted my little Collins back....), and he and I are both amazed at how easily it handles. I feel like the weight is just right and well-balanced. He's already learning to use it as an extension of his arm for reach and manipulation. Also, the handles are great. Some of the nicer hickory handles I've used. They have a nice spring to them. I put them in everything. Thanks again, all the best!
Really love my boys axe, only issue for me was it has an aluminum wedge. I yanked it out and put a wooden one in instead. Probably would have been fine but I just felt better having a traditional wooden one, I guess. I also stripped the paint and need to cold blue the head after I polish it up a bit more. The UA-cam channel Skillcult also uses his quite a bit as well. He's felled and bucked many cords of wood with his.
I just got the 24 " sport utility CT and find the 2 1/4 lb head nicely balanced on that length plus the profile has a great bite . Great video keep the boys axe stuff coming 👍
@@townieoutdoors8121 From what I gather they are considerably more expensive so apart from the shorter handle is there much of a difference? The steel for instance?
My CT Boys axe is about five years old. I do not know when I bought it but it is a forged steel axe and has harder steel than my GBA Small Forest axe. I sharpened them both, yesterday, and the Boys axe was markedly harder than the Small Forest axe. That surprised me. It took me twice as long to sharpen the Boys axe than it did the Small Forest axe. I have used the Boys axe as a wedge banger and a general yard axe, cutting roots, cutting up fallen limbs, etc. it has never received the care my GBA axes get. I know it is a forged axe because I had to clean up a little rust on the blade after I sharpened it. I think the cheap CT axes are now stainless. Mine is not stainless. My guess is 1060 steel because the GBA axes are 1055 steel.
@@bundufundi I have a lot more respect for mine than I did before I sharpened it. I bought my youngest daughter one, later, and it was stainless, but mine is not.
@@johnclarke6647 I’m unsure about the stainless version, it might be priced and made to compete with GB but in doing so, loses its value proposition but I don’t have one so not sure.
@@bundufundi I checked my boys axe with a magnet and it has strong magnetism. I then checked my CT 3.5” double bit and it has some magnetism but about half that of the Boys axe, so the Boys axe is forged.
Thanks Tim, I’m always amazed at how cheap the boys axe was considering it was made in the US and then imported to the UK. For a 1/4 of the price of a GB SFA!
To me the boy's axe was the obvious winner. I have many barely used vintage full size American axes...single and double bits from: True Temper, Collins, Belknap, Craftsman and Plumb. As well as an old Hultafors 1.5# hatchet, Kelly Dandanong 4.5# and mint Hytest Craftsman 4.5# Tassies. But most of the time I find myself reaching for my True Temper or Craftsman boy's axes! Aside from felling large trees...they just do everything well...without tiring my old ass out!
Totally agree, the CT boys axe is such good value and a very good all rounder. I hope CT continue to make it and don’t just replace it with expensive models.
I have the woodcraft and I get where they were going with the design but it's not an amazing splitter as it's advertised and there are much better options...kind of an impulse buy but I'm definitely looking into a boys axe
I own the Pack axe and it's crazy overpriced. Great axe but should be half the price they charge. I think the steel is more superior than on Boys axe. Still don't understand the price difference.
I just picked up the 24" pack axe for $125 on sale at Omaha Knife works with 30% off promo code because they're going out of business because the owner passed. He was an axe enthusiast like we are I hate that he passed I loved watching his videos
Nice to see my favorite American forge, Council tools, being used in the UK. Good video.

Thanks! How does that one differ from the boys axe?
@@bundufundi I guess It is considered a boys axe but usually they're 28 " instead of 24 ".
Or where you asking how it differs in performance? Lol

I really wanted the painted head version of the boys axe, but bought the sport utility line because they switched from the painted head to SU.
That’s a shame, I think the painted version was such good value.

An interesting axe to test if you get the chance is the TOPS High impact. About $280 US, but is super tough and a different take.

The boys axe is such good value in the original configuration if you can get it. They seem to be doing more expensive options now.
