    Scott, excellent in formation . One point you may not be aware of but one that is important to me. I am hard of hearing. It's not a volume issue, but a clarity issue. Very common on those with a hearing deficiency. Your speech pattern is superb, separating your words for comprehension. Thank you for that. I have no problem understanding every word you say. The information you give is first rate and easy to un derstand. You break down everything extremely well. Thyanksagain.

  • @timdavis6088
    @timdavis6088 Рік тому +14

    As a commercial HVAC expert, either one of the fan/filter configurations you explained would work depending on the users mounting requirements. However, you want the exhaust air leaving the tent to be drawn from the top of the tent to remove any stratified air (stagnate air pockets of heat or humidity). You want to utilize the mesh screen(s) at the bottom of the tent for makeup air or fresh air going into the tent. This creates a complete airflow pattern from top to bottom (Chimney effect). Putting both exhaust and makeup air at the same level will cause uneven airflow because the fan will "short cycle". Meaning, the incoming makeup air will not circulate through the space first before being exhausted.
    Also, use the cords and the cord locks that are provided for each hole to secure the flex duct. Not only does this support the flex but it also closes the hole around the flex duct creating a tighter seal. When installing the flex duct make sure you do not leave any excess that you do not need. You want it as tight as possible with a few bends as flex duct really creates a lot of static pressure losses which results in loss of airflow. It would be the same principle as installing a dryer vent. Tight and straight but not so tight that it tears or pulls off the flex duct.
    I wouldn't get too caught up in air changes per hour calculations. Like you rightly pointed out, the manufacturers have sized the fans included with the kits to provide more than enough air changes. The user just needs to make sure the fan installation allows the fan to function proficiently by the proper install and setup.

      How do you get fresh air into the tent passively without a inline fan?

    • @timdavis6088
      @timdavis6088 Рік тому +3

      @@sean1325 Chimney Effect - The heat from the lights will rise. Open the TOP hole for heat to go out and open the bottom screens to allow fresh air in. As the hot air rises it will pull colder air from the bottom.
      However, I don't think this will be sufficient to keep your tent temperature below 80°F. From my experience running temps above 82°F can cause plant stress. The leaves turn brown, the flowers drop, and the fruiting slows/stalls. With the amount of BTU's being produced by the lights you're going to need a fan.

      I use a 6" inline duct fan going into, as well as a seperate one, to exit my tent. I also use a I use a charcoal filter mounted inside of my tent, for the exhaust, which is then ducted to a window fitting - to expell the air outside. Then my entry is pulled from the same window fitting, as to pull cold, winter air over my LED lights. It's amazing, when blowing 40°F straight into the top of my tent, creates a perfect 77°F environment for my plants. These leds can get HOT!

    Most tents have a top vent. Cut a plywood board (or similar) the same size as your tent, then cut a hole in the board the same diameter as your fan intake. (Make sure you match the position of the hole to the position of the vent.)
    Place the board on top of the tent, resting on the frame, then put the fan intake into the hole in the board. Add a filter on top of that if you need one. The whole contraption looks like a chimney.
    Pro - No ducting is needed. No hot and stagnant air at the top of the tent. No space is lost inside the tent. Airflow through the entire tent (if the intake is at the bottom). It takes up no space outside the tent except above the tent, which often isn’t used anyway.
    Con - The fan might need additional L-bracket support to stay in place, especially if the hole in the board is too big. It might be too tall, depending on the tent and the room. Vibrations resulting in noise might be transferred from the board to the frame (put something “bouncy” between the board and the frame).

    One thing I forgot to mention was to make sure your exhaust and makeup air are not on the same side of the tent. The exhaust needs to be exiting one side of the tent and the makeup air needs to come from the other side. If you have them both on the same side it will also cause the fan to short cycle. Meaning, your hot humid exhaust air will be pulled right back inside from the makeup air vent at the bottom.
    Think of a bathtub full of water. If you ever played in the tub as a kid by paddling the water in one direction on one side of the tub, what would happen to the water on the other side? It would start moving in the opposite direction as the side you were paddling on. This creates a circulation in the water that you can see. Well, the fan creates the same effect only you can't see it. Only in this case you do not want it to recirculate the same air over and over. You want it to mix with the room air so you can better manage the temperature, humidity, CO2, and O2.

      The single fan is enough for ventilation.

    Is it just me or does that sound about double of the 32 decibels they claimed?

    If you have a humidifier ensure it has a filter or it Will kill your carbon filter. Buy the tallest tent you can fit, this helps with plant management and temp control

    Besides gardening, I'm also into home brewing. I wonder if all the carbon dioxide given off by the yeast as they break down sugars into alcohol would benefit my plants. 🤔

      It sounds like it could work.

      I can't believe I have never tried or thought of that before! I like your thinking. Have you tested that out yet? Would need a CO2 measuring device

    What happens when we go off the grid?
    Are these rendered useless? Or is there another way to give the plants their nutrition?

      The grow tent doesn't need electricity but the fan does. Making your own compost, worm castings, and organic fertilizes are easy to do.

    Gardener Scott: Were you completely satisfied with this grow tent kit you purchased from Spider Farmer? Would you buy another system exactly like this one, should you require another? Were you happy with the total cost you spent on this entire system? Do you think there is a better system out there for approximately the cost of the Spider Farmer system?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  Рік тому

      I won't say I'm completely satisfied. The small size is the limitation I'm dealing with now. It is very well made and will last for years so I look at it as amortized cost over a long period. I'm waiting on final judgment until I reach the point of indoor harvest.

    But Scott, if you ventilate the grow tent, wont you be purging
    the etylene gas tomato plants offgas to ripen the fruits?
    !

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  9 місяців тому

      Much of the ethylene gas remains near the fruit and it's enough to ripen it.

    I would not purchase any spider farmer productsGreetings from Spider Farmer.
    Sorry, our tent does not have a warranty, so we cannot accept your request.
    You can seal it with tape on top and open the window from below.
    If you have any further questions in the future, please feel free to contact us any time and we will be happy to assist you.
    Have a nice day!
    Best Regards

      Yeah. That’s why it’s priced for a single use! We all make that mistake our first time. Spider or vivosun. Then we upgrade!

    To tell you the truth, even with your explanations, the assembling of this ventilation system in the best/correct way, looks complicated to me. And the amount of clarity provided by the manufacturer's instruction? Oh Boy!
