The Model Y is Tesla’s follow up to the very successful Model 3, announced in March of 2019.
The base Model of the Model Y is set to come out in 2021, and start around $40,000.
I purchased the Long Range AWD Model Y which now starts at $52,990 and gets 316 miles of range.
I also purchased the 20” black Induction wheels which run an extra $2000, as well as the Model Y Red paint upgrade which runs an extra $2000 as well.
Now since I ordered back in October when the prices were a little lower, the total cost of my Model Y came to $55,500, plus the required Tesla Destination fee of $1,200 for a total of $56,700 before tax.
After tax and Registration fees, my Grand total came to: $60,179.75
Regarding music, the Tesla Model Y sound system is incredible, and one of the best systems I’ve heard in any car. Unfortunately, Model Y Spotify integration is pretty terrible.
No more dealership software upgrades. Tesla sends out regular software updates over the air just like you get on your phone or computer.
Regarding Tesla Model Y Safety. Tesla achieved 5 stars in every category for safety, making it the safest car ever tested by the NHTSA. Tesla expects the Model Y to be no different, and we should hopefully hear those results soon.
The standard package includes emergency braking, collision warning, and blind-spot monitoring, but the big two are traffic-aware cruise control, and autosteer.
I recently did a Model Y road trip of 700 miles round trip to Arizona and used autopilot for the majority of the drive, and it was fantastic.
Now if you don’t want autosteer, you can drive with just traffic aware cruise control to maintain your speed, and react to the cars around you while you steer, and I’ve never had an issue with this.
But, if you really want to go for it, and love self driving, you can get Tesla’s full self driving upgrade for an extra $7000.
Tesla’s goal is to have the Model Y, as it is right now, be capable of becoming a Robotaxi within the next couple of years via software updates.
Model Y Launch is amazing at 4.8 seconds 0-60 in my car.
Now the big question with electric cars is…how annoying is it to do Model Y charging? Well, it’s actually the opposite of annoying, it’s incredibly convenient.
It’s missing a good blind spot detection system in the mirrors.
Those mirrors are pretty short, and don’t show you as much as I’d like to see in my mirrors.
The rear visibility is pretty bad, and results in me thinking cars are closer than they really are, since I can only see the top of them.
The center console comes glossy, which means that it has pretty bad glare at certain times of day, and is the definition of a finger print magnet.
The glovebox can only be opened with the button on screen, which is two taps to get to, and the voice command listed on Tesla’s website does not work.
The air conditioning is a little complex to get to and adjust when driving, even though it is overall cool.
The interior ambient lights are almost non-existant, and provide hardly any light
The app can be buggy, leaving me to walk up to the car, open the handle, and have nothing happen, until I then pull out my phone, open the Tesla app, and it unlocks. It also seems to have more difficulty since both mine and my wife’s phones are connected.
Spotify integration is pretty bad as I mentioned before, leading me to not use the app on screen
Auto brights are a little too aggressive for me, turning on when I don’t really need them just because no cars are around. I turned them off.
There is a bug with the front trunk. The trim is cheap and loose inside, the window didn’t open properly and caused a gash, there are panel gaps, and a few other alignment issues.

I just want to thank you Ryan for doing an extensive review on the audio system. Every car I am interested in always seems to say nothing about the audio system, including in customer reviews. I buy a car based on how quiet it is and the audio system. Your comments about the fit and finish match those of JD Power Associates that rate it last in quality of cars!!! That being said, I still strongly consider the Tesla for my choice. I will sign up and hope to learn more...especially accessories that you find for the car that are a plus. Please let me know as soon as you see an update for the Spotify app and Apple Carplay!

I actually thought this review felt like a press release from Tesla, such as those bogus claims about Teslas being safer on the road than other cars. This is simply not true. Cease and desist letters from the federal government were sent to Tesla to take down their claims of superior safety. And, of the 30 minutes, you only spent 2 of it on the very poor and laughable fit and finish, and that was at the end of the video. I think my lawn mower was put together better.

(First time they came to me, 2nd they wanted me to bring it in to try to figure out what keeps happening). Hi Ryan, I have a X-P90D for 2 1/2 years now and I’ve put 110,000 miles on it. I found that driving 60 to 110 miles between charges, only charging for a maximum of 10 to 20 minutes is quicker then sitting in a charging space for maybe 45 up to 60 minutes. I don’t charge to 100% (usually a maximum of 90%) and only deplete it to about 10 to 20%. It will be better for your battery in the long run with short charging sessions and makes your drive shorter in time overall. And congratulations on your marriage!

Over the nine years of ownership I've spent around $500 total for maintenance (replace accessory battery, key fob battery, and the stupid environment filter). There are two reasons why they didn't put a heads up display. First is for complexity and production cost, which reflects on assembly time and profit margins. Second is for autonomy, meaning that the heads-up display becomes pointless for most of the lifetime of the car to anyone who purchased full self-driving. The model 3 isn't the only car with a central speedometer and it's close enough to the line of sight that most people get used to it pretty quickly.

Although Teslas are subject to some valid criticism, the negatives I usually keep seeing goes from distorted truths blown out of proportion or out of context to pure bullshit. Every dip and rebound on the stock value is money being made from stock manipulation since its behavior can be easily played with and predicted. A text conversation between an employee whistleblower and an important reporter from MSNBC paying him to spread lies, reporter that received a large amount of money to do so, is only the tip of the iceberg on money going around shaming Tesla and Elon. Truth is the pros of owning a Tesla greatly outweigh the cons and a lot of revenues from powerful corporations are at stake. Tons of people have been indoctrinated to respond with hatred to anyone who is saying anything positive about Elon Musk and his companies. Take a good look at where your preconceived notions come from. Don't buy into the bullshit and fact check from independent sources.

Yeah the big reason I think rivian is a better choice is because their skateboard platform has 190 kwh as opposed to tesla's 100. They use a different battery architecture to do it, which will undoubtedly make their batteries harder to cool, but when you're going off-roading, more power is absolutely necessary (see engineering explained's video on towing with an electric vehicle). You can make the car as efficient as you want, but ultimately, more power = more gravitational energy you can overcome. That's just thermodynamics. And besides, supporting Tesla's competitors will force them to innovate more. A monopoly is never a good thing.

I really want to love this car, I really do - but those finishing issues with the tacky poor interior, paint work issues and the body panels not fitting correctly just ruin the whole thing for me- once tesla bring the finish quality of their products up to the standards of say a BMW or a Mercedes, then it’s a no brainer, I would buy one in a heartbeat. By the way this is a very good review - thank you.

    1. Unlocking: hold the door handle in the open position and keep holding it open, it will eventually respond - takes even longer if the car is asleep. If too long for you, buy the key - way better - definitely worth it after purchasing it. 2. Wrapping the center console is fine and I did it before...the carbon fiber in matte (fake plastic) was offered by rpm telsa. Way nicer and more robust - worth the $80.

Latest long travel i did - I did around 450 km, in one sweep (no stop) and used around 1/3 of my fuel capacity. During long trips i can drive 1.000-1.200 km on one fueling. And i can stop and rest wherever i want and i'm not tied to stop at (boring) charge stations. And i can take 2.2000 kg on my hitch.
So, well, battery is a good thing for short distance but not for longer distance, and during all that time you use it for short distance, you have a LOT of extra weight that will cause wear on roads, tires and the car itself. So as always, everything has it's good sides and bad sides.

Nice review. I prefer reviews based on months (rather than days or even hours) of ownership. I hate those Amazon reviews where the person just opened the box fifteen minutes ago and it's the greatest thing they've ever bought.
Does the keycard work while in your wallet, or do you have to take the card out? I am much more likely to forget my phone than my wallet, so unless the door unlocking with the app becomes flawless, I think I'd rely on the card and use the app as the backup, rather than the other way around.
If they're going to insist on having virtually no physical controls, they really have to get the voice controls to work perfectly, and it has to be smart enough to interpret multiple commands to perform the same task. I fiddle with my climate control a lot, especially in cold weather where I have to defrost at first, then blast the heat to warm the cabin, then turn it down to get comfortable. Poking around on a touch screen while driving is out of the question, so the voice controls need to be intuitive and flawless. In my car (2007 Honda CRV) voice control is worthless if I'm driving with the windows open, and even when closed it's hard if other people in the car are talking. How reliable is your voice control under those conditions?
By the way, feel free to include more smooching in your videos. That was very sweet.

    • @RyanShawtech
      @RyanShawtech  4 роки тому

Yeah same here. The key has to be out of the wallet in my experience like a hotel room key. And yeah. The vice controls are good, but not perfect and I hope they continue to improve them. I haven’t tried voice controls with the windows down, what mph are you typically driving at with the windows down? I’ll have to test it some time.

It works through that single layer of leather and is my backup in case my S9 phone dies (has happened a few times playing pokemon too zealously). I used to leave home occasionally forgetting wallet but getting better now at always checking for my backup key holder. Now with the homelink on garage door setup in the car I actually stopped carrying sharp pieces of jangly metals in my pockets everywhere. Ryan, solid review. The Model 3 and Model Y respond to a bluetooth signal from your phone (the S and X key fobs use RFID). Apple iPhones lower bluetooth when the phone is asleep (display not turned on). Simply activate your phone (display on) before using the door handle. I had the same problem on my 3- but it just requires "waking" your phone, no need to use the Tesla app.
Also on the fit and finish issues: Unfortunately the pattern is frequent with early releases of each Tesla model. To Tesla's credit, these issues virtually disappear after 6-8 months of production. My 3 is virtually flawless. I worked at Tesla and saw some of the early issues with the 3 and the S and X.

Hopefully you’ll never run into this but one thing a I’ve experienced is that body repair on a Tesla is really expensive and takes awhile to get parts. I got rear ended in our model 3 and the 3rd part Tesla certified shop took about 3 weeks to get parts in before the would start the repairs. Then found additional parts that were needed that added another week of waiting. Final repair was over $9k which was covered by insurance of the person who rear ended me. Note that the car was still driveable after the accident. Guess the aluminum body panels and trunk panels are expensive.

How does it handle in the snow?
What winter tire options are available? How about third-party options?

I took delivery of a 2020 Model 3 Performance just a week or two before you got your Model Y. I have not had any issues at all other than the software issues with voice control which were fixed with first upgrade. The fit and finish are excellent and I'm a total convert to electric cars now. I also own a 2013 Ford Focus ST which is a lot of fun to drive but now feels slow and not as planted as my M3P. Going from one pedal driving to three is taxing for the brain too, so that keeps me on my toes. :-) I feel like I'm stepping into the future every time I go for a drive. My wife just discovered the careoke feature and she has a lot of fun on our "let's get out of the house and go for a drive" trips. :-) Maybe the little glitches you've found with your Y are just the initial production issues whereas they've probably solved most of those with the 3 by now.

“Technician's Choice TEC582 Ceramic Detail Spray”
It’s a spray on ceramic coating, but it’s not permanent like the pro ceramic treatments..
Apply once every few car washes and it will maintain a perfect ceramic coating.

This is such a good review. Tesla makes great products and most that actually own them realize the good far outweighs their flaws. A fair review, like you provided, will touch on both. Unfortunately early builds of Tesla products still appear to come with more issues. These will be ironed out for the most part but I really hope Tesla can step up their quality control in general because their vehicles are amazing otherwise and so many people use these flaws to dismiss an otherwise industry-leading product.

And we all know how annoying it is to get a Tesla repair done as not many places service them as well as back order and availability on parts. They are trying to pump out as many orders as they can without attention to quality and it's going to come to bite them in the ass.
