    I speak several languages fluently. I know quite a few more not so fluently and then in others, I can order a beer and find a bathroom. The biggest problem when learning a language is the idioms and adages. In English we use language to convey huge concepts with a few words. It's the same in other languages, especially the Euro-Romantic languages. The one thing that has truly impressed me about the game is listening to the cut scenes in the languages I know. I don't know Japanese. I only know Korean from the Eastern Asian arena. English is also no my first language. However, Urianger messed with my head so much in French and German, but I laughed so hard. It reminded me of a visit to Korea where our guide was a girl who was studying Elizabethan English. I loved that trip.

    18:56 I could maybe give these people the time of day if we're talking about the EN cast in ARR; though from what I understand, that was recorded on an obscenely short schedule even by game standards, where they simply didn't have the time for anything more than "eh, good enough, next scene". The London cast on the other hand is absolutely amazing, and Emet-Selch, Zenos and everything about The Burn (Savage) should have really put this argument into a nice pine box, six feet down.
    The fact that the devs and JP fans have come to love the irreverent humour that Koji sticks into tooltips, item flavour text and quest/FATE names tells me they've got a good thing going, and I think its safe to say that if he was abducted by aliens or eaten by a Grue suddenly, Yoshi-P, Ishikawa and the rest of the crew would want whoever replaced him to continue in his style.

      Technically Koji Fox already has a successor, since he hasnt been working on the game much in a few years (he's working on XVI). But I think it would be a huge loss regardless, for sure haha

    I loved your video and explanations! I am a big fan of linguistics (even though I know only a few languages myself 😁) exactly because the culture and history of the people are woven into the language, and you can infer a lot of meaning from a simple phrase or sentence.
    Great work! Looking forward to more videos like that! 🤗

      @@imacuttlefish6832 , oh, I only meant that it's a pity I don't know more! 😁
      And it's indeed only a few languages (I'm not overly modest like G'raha Tia!). 😅
      My native language is Bulgarian, I know English and Spanish, and a just little Norwegian (still learning it). But to me, it's always fascinating to find connections between the languages (e.g. how Danish influenced Norwegian) and understand the origins/history of words and how their meaning changes. ☺️

    I like how the fanfic fandom has pretty much decided to to make Haurchefant a combo of both, where he's a bit of a flirt but not a creepy thirsty flirt.

    Ah, localisation! While I would love to see Hornshefaunt in game, seeing him as a bro who helps in really bad situation is way better for me and feels more immersive.
    Also somehow it feels a bit more interesting in hind-sight. For japanese directly horny characters feel a bit more acceptable, while in english such position is generally obscured and written in more subtle way. Which is funny IMO.
    Thank you for this vid. I agree, this game has Excellent translation.

      Yeah, English FFXIV deffo has that stuff going on, it's just more subtle as you said. Like in Stormblood when you see that Garlean troop say something along the lines of "You wouldn't believe what she could do with her tongue" from there we can infer a lot of disgusting (and honestly terrible) things of how women in Ala Mhigo are, let's just say, "used" by the imperials. But you do sorta have to use your imagination first.

    You aren't wrong when you point out that ff11 and 14 share a similar take on english localization, because Koji Fox was responsible for taking the helm of both games on the english localization department.

      Ah crud, it's even mentioned in the interview I posted. Could've included it... ah well. In any case, thanks for sharing this! Never played XI myself so I always appreciate when people provide me insight on that game.

    I feel like if they kept Haurchefant's "horniness" in the English version he might've come across as more of a joke character rather than a friend. It may be funny in anime, but it's kinda seen as a bit disturbing in the west when a character is just constantly seeing you as a sex object, if that makes sense

    • @imacuttlefish6832
      @imacuttlefish6832  2 роки тому +4

      100% agree, it would have made his character weaker for sure.

    • @JohnSears1970
      @JohnSears1970 2 роки тому +1

      Eh, I dunno. I mean, the anime explosion in the US was already *well in motion* by the time HW came out. They could have kept his character the same and fans would have understood the nuances, I think. I, for one, would have preferred a straight translation for Haurchefant.

    • @imacuttlefish6832
      @imacuttlefish6832  2 роки тому +2

      @@JohnSears1970 There is merit to ur statement. After all, it's easy to assume there's quite a bit of overlap between FFXIV, a Japanese MMO/RPG, and anime in terms of audiences. But I think it's a bit too dangerous for the writers to assume the overlap is significant enough.
      I don't have any statistics so this is just me speaking personally, but I haven't watched any anime myself so for me it would have definitely been jarring.

  • @stevenalvarez2924

    One thing that western audiences don't like, compared to probably japanese, is when we are told a persons emotional state versus writing to imply the emotional state from body language or expression. When the writing is telling us the state of mind bluntly it implies the western audience is too stupid to figure out from the visual representation of the actors body language or facial expression. Kind of like if The Hulk was to continuously say, "I'm Angry" through out his movies. His body shape, roars, and aggression kind of tells us all we need to know.

    • @imacuttlefish6832
      @imacuttlefish6832  2 роки тому

      Yeah, exactly! In JP, more emphasis is put on how to convey information more effectively, but in the west it's more about how can we convey their emotional state/thought process.

    This is exactly why I despise the people who go after english translations for ‘not being accurate.’ The cultures are so different, the languages are so different. A direct translation might appeal to a few people but it would make the media inaccessible to most people because it would sound unnatural and weird.
