Because Shiro Maekawa did the writing for Sonic Adventure 2. When Sonic Colors came out they got new writers from Happy Tree Friends and the stories got kid friendly. Tails was brave in Adventure 1 and fought Eggman by himself and defused a bomb without Sonic. He didn't give up when he fought Eggman when he thought Sonic died from the exploding capsule. Now Forces Tails is weak. Ken Pontac
& Warren Graff ruined Sonic Tails and Shadow.

UA-cam is starting to spread this and I'm glad it is, it's wonderfully stated. Even though Modern Sonic's writers think it has to be endlessly self-deprecating to survive the "fans", letting characters exist in their own world and showing genuine emotion isn't just nostalgic, it's why Sonic Fans are so dedicated to begin with.
Oh yeah, the "fans" who nitpick about everything when "reviewing" the games. The "fans" who do nothing but repeat like a parrot the same cheesy quotes from the games and pretend that's all there is to their stories. The "fans" who claim that Sonic was never good because the series is "fundamentally flawed". Those are the kind of "fans" who Sega seems to want to please right now.

I agree it's fun to a point, but when everyone does it gets old. I miss the daring story writing, it cops out into just another slice of life story with very little consequence. I was disappointed in shows like Overlord that start strong that get bogged down with filler and 1st world problems. I was disappointed that that the devil is a part-timer teased, but never went any deeper.
As a writer I can see why it's an easy trap to fall into, it's easier to write when the stakes are low.

I will never forget when eggman held Amy hostage at gunpoint, outsmarted Tails and nearly blew up Sonic for real.
FUCK do I miss when Eggman had a brain. When he was a mad scientist who wanted to build the eggman empire, not a theme park. When he had a plan beyond: "Wake up big bad monster guy only for it to inevitably turn on me." or "Here's my new big bad robot. I'mma try and smash you with it now, seeing how well that's worked for me the last 12 times."
I miss when Knuckles could do 9 + 10 in his head and not get 21. When he had responsibilities and a personality beyond "I'm loud punchy guy now. Also my IQ dropped about 50 points."
And god, do I miss when Sonic was just a guy that loved adventure. Who loved the planet that was as cool and blue as he was. Where he was confident and cool but still had those real moments where even he had his doubts.
Hopefully he'll make a comeback sometime in the future... for now, I guess I'll take what I can get.

There's a reason why Sonic remained unchanged:
I spoke with one of the developers of Sonic Lost World a few years back (he was teaching a course on game design), and he shared some important insight into how SEGA operates. He said all throughout the game's development, whenever they came up with an idea, they'd have to run it by a "Sonic Council" in Japan. This group would decide whether the idea was on-brand for Sonic, and it went down to the tiniest gameplay details. At once point they had Sonic boost through a tunnel to collect rings, and that got shot down as not being something Sonic "did." Weirder still, they were really flaky about stuff, often changing their minds weeks after an idea had been worked on or canned. (Including the aforementioned tunnel idea.)
I therefore wouldn't be surprised if that same Sonic Council forbade the developers from doing anything interesting with Sonic, as doing so would clash with the brand's image.

What you said about self awareness really made me reflect on the stories I love, because I actually love them. Because they're unapologetically weird and goofy, and they focus all of their runtime on saying what they have to say.
It's not that the story doesn't realize it, it's that it embraces its weird traits without worrying about wether or not the public will understand it beyond the surface level. I guess there's some confidence in that, compared to constantly hiding behind irony.
Man, Tails was actually my first comfort character as a kid. I was, and still am, a really emotional and timid person. Seeing him butchered so much in Forces absolutely was DEVASTATING.
What SEGA did to Tails was purely EA level of assholery.

People have a lot of favourite moments in Sonic, but I have a really small thing that shows how genuine Sonic stories were.
At the end of the Team Sonic story in Sonic Heroes, Sonic looks back on the Egg Fleet he teared through with his friends, feeling cocky at the victory. But Knuckles chimes in, teasingly saying that Sonic was scared and needed his friends to survive. So, Sonic admits that he did need his friends and then thanks Knuckles, who is completely taken aback by the unexpected reply.

You make a good point about the ironic content being what's truly cheesy. Honestly, whenever something is ironic nowadays it makes me think the creators are just too cowardly to actually try and put their heart out into a good story. But then again authors are not entirely at fault for this recent development, most of the blame falls on godawful "cringe culture". Glad it's dying out.

@@Jacadamia Its get worse than Yuji Naka leaving, I did some research on the sonic wiki to to answer the question how Sonic unleashed is a passionate game with out Naka???? Well it turns out the director Yoshihisa Hashimoto Is not only a programer on Sonic advance 2 but he also made the Hedgehog Engine. Sadly he left Sega for Square Enix, and Sonic Unleashed is the last Sonic game to be made by sonic team USA and since then Sonic games are now low budget. Thats two Developers that Sega lost. Why because all Sega cares for arcade sales and pachinko machines. 3d Sonic so far is about as dead as Metal Gear. The good news is that Freedom Planet comes pretty close to the passion that Adventure 2 had

I still remember when Sonic Unleashed trailer dropped, and that banger Endless Possibilities played. Man, I had goosebumps throughout it, and a bit teary eyed, because Sonic 06 was such a dumpster fire, it felt like SEGA just didn't give a shit about it anymore, but that trailer really resonated within me. The Boost Mechanic, the fantastic visuals, the stunning stages and map design, and the amazing OST in the game; truly one of my favorites ever. Sure Generations was great too, but it felt too humorous for my liking, Unleashed was still fairly serious and told a grounded story, which I appreciated. Also being the last time Jason Griffith voiced him, he really nailed Sonic at this point, coming off as a very genuine character in contrast to the Sonic we have now who's just kind of an wise-cracking asshole, in my opinion.
Sonic Unleashed will always be my favorite Sonic game, even though it has it's flaws...many, many flaws.
Something that has always really bugged me with media in general these days is the fear of showing "actual emotion." As you said, that trend of having to be "ironic" and "self-aware" is pretty prevalent. It seems many are scared of writing or making something that'll be labeled as "cringy" which is why they feel the need to be as ironic and self-deprecating as possible. For me, I love games with a good, emotional, somewhat cheesy story. I find it considerably harder to enjoy a story that is constantly trying to be quirky and not take itself seriously. Why even try and tell a story if you don't even try in the first place? Just feels like hollow and empty filler.

Well, it may very well be empty, if the director or actors don’t have passion for the story for whatever reason. Maybe it’s fear of cringe, maybe they got mad the ending wasn’t how they liked, or most likely, some internal financial squabble made them just say “screw this film, I’ll just do my lines and go”
Ironically enough, people are starting to fall into these layers of irony where things are getting harder and harder to excuse with "it's ironic, therefore it's funny and good". It feels like the new "it's just a prank bro" to me.

When you talked about the “self-aware stuff,” my favorite character from Netflix’s *A Series of Unfortunate Events* came to mind. Larry Your-Waiter wasn’t the best agent, but you could tell that he genuine cared about the Bauldelaire children, trying his best to keep them out of the clutches of the dastardly man who murdered their parents to obtain their fortune. His fellow agents either were murdered by Count Olaf or retired from the job, leaving Larry as the only living member of VFD. He was cornered in a room, tied up, and burned in a boiling pot of curry. They quickly made a joke about the food staining Count Olaf’s shirt though, which made me feel even more sad for Larry. Rest In Peace, man.

Aw Geez, That part at the end where endless possibilities was dejectedly sung really hit the feels, maybe because that's exactly how the child in me feels.
Sonic Stories of the past are among some of the best pieces of media. A lot of people say Sonic and The Black Knight is an amazing story, and a lot of them testify to it helping them deal with morality as a child, myself included. Ijust wish Sonic Stories could do those same things in this day too.
We have a possibility with pontac and that other guy gone, but that was beautiful.
tbh I became a sonic fan because this franchise had cool, emotional, dark and comedy scenes in a perfect balance but now it only has comedy and sometimes cool scenes. After Sonic 06, SEGA had received many feedbacks regarding the fact that Sonic's story wasn't given much attention like the other 2 (Shadows and Silvers story). Just because Sonic 06 was bad, SEGA is scared of making another adventure style game and now they give all attention to sonic only. Due to this:
1) Knuckles is no longer a guardian of the Master Emerald
2) Tails is no longer the guy who saved Station Square and fought Eggman by himself
3) Shadow is no longer the guy who promised Maria to help everyone and keep the Earth safe. (now he is just a rival to sonic and edgelord).
Also, he thinks that friends are pathetic due to which he didn't helped Rouge and Omega in team sonic racing overdrive.

It was inevitable that this video would age kinda poorly, it's just surprising it took so little time.
I'm one of those weird people who has been privately doing my own rewrite for the plot of Sonic 06, because, even though the game is bad and the plot is nonsense, I see SO MUCH promise and sparks of wonderful ideas and characters there that I refuse to let them die there. Mephiles to me is one of Sonic's greatest villains, and I love the whole idea of such a demonic, serious villain like him being in the world of Sonic to face against such a light-hearted character, and while Silver's managed to make it into other games he's never really had much of a focus, even though I also really like the concept of what and who he is as well. Sonic is remarkably special in that way it CAN be ridiculously corny, and amazingly serious and epic at the same time, like a super sentai, or a godzilla movie. I love stories that can do that, and Sonic is the perfect setting to do such things.
Mephiles was amazing in Shadow's scenario, more of that in Silver's scenario plus fixing the time travel flaws would already improve the story flow a lot. For Sonic's scenario reducing some of the filler would help the pacing too and Sonic being with Elise should have been left as becoming close friends. Yea there's still the ''lol sonic with a human'' meme but atleast then there's no problematic element with adding romance.
It's tragically ironic that sonic has always been about opening your heart and trying new things but now sega is to cowardice to live up to these ideals. Sonic has always helped me through tough times so here's hoping he can do the same for sega.
Yeah, sonic was always about having fun and seeking thrills to live life to the fullest. He was a free spirit, a bringer of hope that held allegiance to no one but himself. Now they are simply to afraid to give him any depth whatsoever

Kirby and the legend of Zelda both manage to have amazing stories but honestly, Kirby is a masterpiece. Every game has a totally different vibe while always being Kirby. Every game is a self contained story so anyone can pick it up but if you look at the series as a whole you get an amazing over arching story of friendship ancient mysteries eldritch horrors of pure malice and the power of this one kid to bring people together
Couldn't agree more. Kirby seems simple and innocent on the surface, but the series is actually quite deep and complex while also being very dark. It's basically Lovecraft lite, but with a little bit of hope and friendship in there.

There's some great commentary on how overdosing on irony in order to shield oneself from public perception is incredibly harmful. It's better for one to be honest with themselves rather than playing it cool just not to feel embarrassed. @@JellyyEgg Rush's trick system and Colors' wisps and level moments (The water slide in Aquarium Park, roller coaster in Asteroid Coaster, giant drill in Planet Wisp, etc) really made me fall in love with Sonic and especially the DS games.
Also, I'm so glad you mentioned the absolute SLAP the soundtracks are. Literal bops. I really hope they make Sonic games like they used to.
yeah i remember playing chronicles and liking it when i was younger (it IS good, but i would find it amazing just bc it was an rpg, its just ok), but like, the music and some other things were some flaws.
and i don't think Sonic Colors (ds ver.), Rush and Rush Adventure have flaws, they're amazing (never played 06, Heroes and Colors Wii version)
When Sonic Chronicles has more soul than recent games shows how far Sonic Team missed their mark.
You know it's bad when even Chronicles had better story compared to Lost World and Forces.
They really improved on story with the sequel to sonic forces: the sonic IDW comics. They have it take a more serious tone in many issues, and create new characters for the story.
I still find it weird how people complain about how bad the sonic writing is despite being the same people who say "Sonic stories shouldn't be taken seriously. its a blue hedgehog".
im in the boat of thinking the stories shouldnt be 100% serious allll the time, i like some lightheartedness, but I think the stories should take themselves seriously, or sincerely, instead of undercutting any and all emotional moments with “self-aware” jokes or whatever

This video was amazing and super validating to hear considering it's exactly how I've felt about stories in modern sonic for a while now, sonic went from a series with a cool main character that tried to tell grander stories, to something that barely tries and makes it out like enjoying sonic should just naturally be embarrassing please laugh we know sonic sucks hey remember big the cat?

My man Mario, literally went around the world (plus the moon) to stop a wedding.
But then he and Bowser gets rejected by peach. That’s pretty rough since Mario throughout all these years has rescued Peach from the clutches of bowser.
On a side note: Sega needs to care more about sonic. Most of his games pretty much after generations felt half assed (Especially Forces)

Sure, the universe resetting is apparently part of the natural order according to Galaxy, but more than one Peach/Bowser wedding in the same century is going to wear out the seams that hold everything together, even if you stop the void from claiming everything again.

When we played Sonic Forces, the transition of interesting intro plot stuff to BAM HERE'S SOME TEXT SONIC IS DEAD to "Hey just kidding haha but the world is Eggman's" all in the span of 5 minutes gave me whiplash.
It feels like Sonic has been so many different things to so many different people, but rarely the same thing for more than a couple of games. So the sonic fandom consists of different groups who all like different versions and it's rare for any one group to get another version in the style they liked.
THANK YOU!!! One moment that will always stick to me for this exact reason is when Sonic tells Chip "Do I need to have a reason to want to help out a friend?" He doesn't do that straight away or in a overly cocky demeanor. He only brings Chip back when he tries to leave. He lets Chip give his reasoning first. He says the line in a sincere and serious tone. Heck, Chip doesn't even answer he just says "thank you Sonic" in an understanding way. THIS IS PHENOMENAL EMOTIONAL STORYTELLING PEOPLE

While Frontiers is finally trying again, I think there were a few moments where they felt like they were trying to cram in the funny.

Like, when your best friend in the world is having an existential crisis, and asks if he's been a burden to you because he feels like he can't do anything right... probably not the best time to reply with a sarcastic quip.
Also don't know how to feel about them basically saying, "Yeah, it makes sense that he cowered in fear when he saw Chaos 0, just don't think about it too hard"
But if that whole story on Chaos Island means we're getting a Tails solo game, I guess I can live with Forces still being canon.
Its honestly really refreshing seeing a video talking about Sonic's Story in a hopeful and genuine tone, this isn't some Analyst giving an hour long explanation on how Current Day Shadow needs to be more/less edgy like the old days because thats his character, but instead is a genuine happiness for the silly yet epic stories that sonic was known for.
Here’s the thing, back in the early 2000’s sonic stories got darker and more mature. Fans didn’t like it they wanted a more, well, Older type of sonic where the story was light hearted. They gave it to us and now people are realizing they don’t actually like it. I feel like sonic team is just confused as cherry pie in the crab market.
Why do people keep insisting that classic sonic games were "light-hearted"? They had stories about destruction of the environment for the sake of mechanical progress. They had cute animals being trapped in robots and used as power source. I don't know about you, but that's pretty horrifying.

I grew up with older cartoons and video games and the stories were great in those. I completely understand what you are saying when it comes to the new sonic games. The tails and shadow from the old games is what I miss the most and I hope the soon sonic games will get better.
The only good part in lost world to me was when Eggman threatened to eat the yeti's heart out and the moment when sonic had realized he lost his friends, but everything else just makes these dark points awkward and out of place and the forced separation of tails and sonics friendship. Trying to keep most the game silly and goofy with these dark moments are odd. Having a comical eggman all of sudden being threatening just doesn't work. I just hope the next games get better writing. Its weird how these colorful anthros seem to work more in stories like Sonic adventure than a goofy lighthearted one. You'd think the opposite would be true?

You know this video speaks in a way I figure out what happened to Sonic.
In concept Sonic was originally a character that was supposed to represent teenage rebellion but with 06 he took it too far so unfortunately Sonic have to bow down to the horrible critics and become a respectable member of Society which is boring and safe, Sonic needs to break free and rebel once more
You are absolutely right, as that is exactly what happened. Also, they started looking at Mario and did what Nintendo does with Mario with Sonic.
Sonic games were very involved with other characters constantly around. Now, he's just alone on an adventure while the other characters aren't playable. Kind of like how Mario is in a lot of his adventures.
Sonic grew up and became an unfunny boomer trying to hard to relate to the youth like he did naturally as a youth himself and failing miserably with his barrage of dad jokes, he literally sounds like the "how do you do, fellow kids?" meme in the Meta Era.
@@Vice_Verse0 Mario ripped off some of Sonic's better ideas (Bowser Jr. now functions like Eggman, Mario is learning Sonic's signature moves such as the Spin Dash and Homing Attack, etc.), and Sonic responded by ripping off Mario's mistakes (sanitized non-plots about the characters doing the same things for no reason every time, two sets of attempts to make Sonic Koopalings (and doubling down on the wrong set imho, it should've been Heavy King returning in Forces and TSR instead of Zavok), the Plains-Desert-Water-Jungle-Ice-Mountain-Sky-Fire generic world themes, etc.), leaving Mario to run forward at the speed of sound while Sonic lightspeed BLJs into the very past that he helped dumpster by originally being so original and pushing everyone forward.

Bro I'm gonna be honest... I thought this was gonna be one of "those" videos but no. I'm glad It wasn't. This is exactly how I feel. Back then of the days of when I was playing Sonic 06, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic and the black knight... man Sonic was so god damn cool... he's the main reason I myself wanted to be fast. Running around at the speed of sound, Enjoying what the world has to offer. Living freely without a care in the world... can you imagine that? I always thought of how fun and cool it would be. And also having a friend right beside you to go along with you and your adventure...
But now... it feels... different... it's just not the same anymore... Whenever Sonic got serious with the face he had, You know (like you said) things were about to go down. It's also one of the things that made Sonic cool. Like Sonic and the Black Knight (Spoilers) when he was getting brutally beaten up by the girl (I forgot her name) but still stood up and fought back. but then thats when Author broke.... the one you were with throughout the whole game... BUT THEN HE WENT SUPER SONIC WITH THE GOLDEN ARMOR!? BRO THAT TRANSFORMATION WAS INSANE!!!
It's like, if you compare that moment to Sonic Forces it's immediately 10x better than Sonic Forces...
Hopefully when the next Sonic game comes out it'll make me feel like a kid again instead of making me cringe 100% of the time Lol.
If you're wondering how I felt about Forces. I beat it in 3 hours. Seriously. No breaks. No nothing. Just 3 hours straight. And what did I feel about that whole game? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I was hype and wondering what was gonna happen as the story progressed but... I just felt nothing. I just played it just to play it. The gameplay wasn't intriguing. The story wasn't super interesting. Basically I had the Saitama Face from One Punch Man.... Felt nothing.
Mood, Sonic and the Black Knight was too much fun to go through for me, the final boss theme, special dialogue depending on how you did, or were doing in a fight was always amazing and reflected things better than just tossing it in after the battle.
Having a hard time and having Caliburn reassure Sonic while Merlina was just telling him to give up, and then redoing the battle and basically obliterating her while she was basically in awe of their power made things feel way more expansive than they were, i really missed the midstage dialogue and i was so happy when Forces brought it back, but it kinda stunk that it didn't have more variation, i think the only game that I've played in recent time that has done that was DMC5, and hoo, does it feel sweet having the games characters talk about how well or rough you might be doing from an in universe perspective, I love it when the situation feels believable in world, even if im not the type of person to get self-immersed in a game, i love when the game immerses the characters in it and they feel like parts of it rather than just an avatar.

The last Sonic game that had an engaging story to me was Black Knight. I actually liked the message of how although death is inevitable, you shouldn’t let it hurt you. Live life to the fullest one day at a time.

Commenting to help others see this video- thank you for this. I feel like you summed up the biggest issue with Sonic stories nowadays and I'm so happy this is now getting people's attentions.
Rambling on a side note, I found the idea that the Sonic Team "gave up" around Lost World a really intriguing idea, especially considering how vocal the Sonic fanbase has been with its criticisms. For the longest time, the fanbase kept criticizing the Sonic games for the kinds of stories they were doing ("why is he in a storybook now?" "why is he a werewolf?" "why kiss an anime princess?"), and maybe that's why Sonic Team gave up on trying to put passion into their stories.
Granted a good chunk of the fans' criticism was directed towards the style of gameplay itself, but it often pointed at story and character elements as part of what was to blame for the game being "bad" ("too many characters," "plot doesn't feel fitting for a Sonic game," "why are you trying something new again Sonic Team?- go back to the 2D era when everything was kept simple!"). SEGA is known for being aware of the fandom, and both the Sonic social media team and Sonic Boom (the show) are evidence of this, so maybe all this "soullessness" is them desperately trying to "please the fandom" instead of just genuinely chasing after stories and new elements they felt passionate about having in their games.
I say this as a Sonic fan who got sucked into the popular mindset of "oh 06 is bad," "werehog is bad," "3d Sonic peaked at adventure 2 and its all been downhill from there," and now regrets it seeing as Sonic Team's attempts to please the fans seem to have made them lose their identity as game creators. Sue me, but I miss the deeper, darker plot they tried to go for in 06- I like that they tried brand new stories with Sonic via the Storybook series, Unleashed, Chronicles, etc.
Probably the biggest recent tragedy to me was the loss of Sonic Synergy- judging by the concept art, Synergy was going to be radically different from everything we have seen of Sonic before, but it felt like they were genuinely pursuing concepts and brand new ideas that they felt passionate about. Sonic Boom- I feel is the result of the Synergy people fearing that their radically different concepts would receive immense backlash from the community, so they backed off half-way and just tried to merge the current Sonic state with some "safe, non-controversial" elements of Synergy (which resulted in a lackluster series, so they turned extremely cynical and self-aware because they didn't even believe in what they created anymore).
Anyway, that's just my sleep-deprived brain thoughts on things. Make of it what you will :P
You really hit the nail on the head! I'll admit I was also one of those "06 is trash" guys years after I had played it, thanks to the common narrative surrounding sonic on the internet. I think Sega got wind of the rise of "cringe culture" and started going in the opposite direction with their stories because it was way more "hip and happenin'" to not take itself seriously. Sonic Colors' story did rub me the wrong way a little bit but I could forgive it, and then Generations happened and I excused it because it was an anniversary title and "not canon," and I mostly just chalked things up to me not liking the newer VAs as much as the old ones.
Lost World however, legitimately got me mad. I went into it with an open mind and was actually pretty excited for the new gameplay style, but the whole thing just felt like it had way less thought and care put into it than any of the other sonic games before it. The story was pretty bland, and I remember realizing that there wasn't even any way to rewatch the cutscenes inside the game like there had always been. Super Sonic had TWO MOUTHS! All those little nice details and polishes that you see in quality games that people take for granted, just weren't there. It was the first time I felt like Sonic Team really didn't care about what they were making, and since then it's just been downhill.
I really really hope that sonic team took some time to reassess after Forces and can get back on track. They need people who actually care about sonic on their team because to me the lack of love has been super apparent. I just wanna be excited about the future of the series again soon. I know Sonic'll be ok, if Crash can come back and be amazing again, I'm sure sonic will too... eventually, lol.
Sonic' story peaked with Sonic Unleashed, Black Knight and Colors DS, I've been saying that since Sonic Forces.

Well, in the month or so that's passed since we've made these comments, we've gotten announcements of an upcoming Sonic anniversary game (or games?), Sonic Prime show, and brand new Sonic voice cast. With all these announcements happening pretty close to each other, it really feels like Sonic Team is trying to distance themselves from the Colors-Forces era, and preparing to begin a new one ASAP. They're replacing the Colors-Forces era cast, making a new Sonic show (to replace Sonic Boom), and might be making a new game specifically to celebrate Sonic's anniversary (to replace Sonic Generations, if so).
I guess time will tell what this apparent "new era" of Sonic will hold, but I'm hopeful that things are finally looking up again for the Blue Blur.
Additionally, although these aren't games, the Sonic IDW comics and the Sonic 2020 movie have also given me a lot more hope for the potential future of Sonic. Both have placed an emphasis on story and character that I have not seen in the games since the Jason Griffith era ended, and my hope is that the games will follow suit.
