    A few things I missed In this video, even though I was sure I got everything..
    The body harness on the driver side firewall also contains the main ignition wires going to the starter. These wires you keep as they perform the same task with the ls motor. They start the engine and power all your accessories.
    Also, the original 3rd gen driveshaft fits, as with the UMI mount adapters, the motor and trans pretty much fall in the same place as the 80s stuff. No need to shorten or lengthen the driveshaft, but I would recommend upgrading to a stronger one if you plan on making big power. Im using the factory 4th gen torque arm mount on the back of the trans as well.

      I’m thinking about a 4.8 with a few performance parts in my 86. Just can’t wait to get the build started. And I also can’t wait to paint my Camaro and it’s going to be blue too.

    This has to be one of the best 3rd gens I've seen. I bought a 4th gen to swap my first car that is a Maui Blue '87 IROC. The 4th gen turned out better than expected, so I kept driving it, and after going to car shows I got hooked on the Impulse Blue Metallic on the newer GTO's. I don't have build questions or idea's, just admiration for how awesome you made your car. It started as a cast off V-6 and turned into this? You sir, are a 3rd gen Wizard that made real things happen after I listened to the stupidity of "that won't work".

    I've got a 82 z28, first year of this body style of car, mine has a Lt1 in it came out of a vette, got the Holley 4 on it, the reason I like this Camaro very close on interior and body style, they didnt really change much in the 80s and mid 90s, this is a beautiful example of a Camaro, great color, only thing I'd do different is get a three piece louver to go on ths back window, but glad to see a guy 15 years younger than me fall in love with what I did in 94.

      Batteries go in the back very nicely on 3rd and 4th gen cars. Relocation is usually one of my first mod's. Cleans up engine bay room to put the air box on the passenger's side, also, which helps with routing. I noticed his upper rad hose and intake are very close to belts.

    Here is a list of what I did to mine.
    Volant CAI, Crank bolt, valve cover gasket, head gaskets, head bolts, front cover gasket, oil pump and seal, 102 mm throttle body, custom ECM and TCM tune. 46 lb injectors, 2600 stall torque converter, Match port polish existing heads 2.02 intake, 1.57 exhaust. Johnson roller lifters, Texas speed cam 600 lift, 220 duration. 111LSA. JBA long tube ceramic coated headers, high flow cats and resonators. FAST 102 intake. My goal was to make the LS2 be as much as it can be without forced induction or nitrous. Setbacks are altitude (a mile high) and drivetrain loss. I figure 30% at least. The car dynoed at 420 torque and HP. At sea level it would be close to 500 hp to the wheels on motor alone. I feel adding forced induction things will start breaking. Trans, axle halfs, driveshaft, etc. 06 Pontiac gto.

    FYI, with regard to PCM connector "colors", Red & Blue PCM connectors cover (most) 1999 to 2002 4.8/5.3/6.0, Red and Green cover (most) 2003+ 4.8/5.3/6.0. As for harnesses go, I pin-out the stock one, takes about an hour and a half. That $500 would get a guy a GT45 turbo, waste gate, intercooler & piping

    This is awesome man and very much appreciated.. The money saving solutions you provide along the way puts our poor folk minds at ease about attempting this.. All 3rd gens deserve an ls I think and I've seen similar vids and read some summarized ls swap material but its usually sponsored content or someone with enough bank to buy a solution for everything.. But your run down seems to cover everything and I'll def be sharing it to anyone looking to do this.. Car is gorgeous btw.. Metallic blue is my favorite color on these and that 6th gen color takes it to another level especially with the black vette wheels... Mmhhmmm.. You've even got my small cowl hood.. You've got good taste for sure.. Thanks again man.. My son and I will def be referring to this later

    Good job and a great looking car. I swapped an LS1/T56 into a 1991 that had a 305/700R4 back in the day before there were swap kits. Not a bad swap and well worth the effort, but it has its share of thorns. once I swapped the hard brake line to the front of the crossmember, the oil pan cleared with no problem, but I had no room to run the exhaust. Mine hung even lower under the car. That LS1 is better than just about anything one can do with the old small blocks and the T56 is a world better than any transmission they came with.

    • @88gnarkill

      John Wilburn what'd you do for. A slave cylinder mount on the firewall?

    • @johnwilburn
      @johnwilburn 6 років тому

      I took the cylinder and made a paper template of the mounting surface bolt and cylinder holes in the center, leaving the outside the full sheet. I took that and trimmed the outside to fit that diagonal line on the firewall from the outside, then taped that in the same place but on the inside of the firewall. That made for perfectly locating the two mounting bolt holes and the hole the cylinder goes through. The cylinder itself bolts flat to the firewall. While the factory used a sheet metal bracket that attached to the brake booster to mount the clutch cylinder reservoir, I just used a vacant bolt hole on the firewall that a lot of people use for the same thing. It’s in exactly the right spot for that.

  • @jimmycline4778

    Awesome car, the only changes I would do is, change that steering wheel, remove LSX emblems on outside and dash and put IROC emblems or Z28 in those places, and put the big IROC Z emblems on it , put them to the rear of the doors, those decals are bad azz! A lot of people don’t know what Z28 stands for Z is Zoom, 2 is 2door, 8 is V8!

    I tried skimming the comments for an answer, but couldn't find one. You link two types of headers, the e-bay set and the Hooker set, the Y-pipe you linked from Hawk's says it ONLY fits their headers. Specifically which headers did you use in your swap and I imagine the Y-pipe bolted right up, or did you have to modify it?
    By the way, this video is insanely useful, I'm a member on TGO as well and its kinda annoying digging through 50 threads to get 80 different answers on what parts to use and what not, so thanks for making it easy on us budget friendly guys!

    • @lsxmatt
      @lsxmatt  6 років тому

      Thanks for the support, and no problem! Those headers I used with the hawks y pipe. They are literally just Chinese copies, they fit the same way. The hawks y pipe fits them with no problem. I actually just ordered a new y pipe from hawks and some 1 7/8’s Ebay headers. I’ll have a video on the install in a few weeks.

    Depending on what motor mounts you use you won't have to modify the k-member. I never had to modify the k-membet. I used a factory LS1 throttle cable and just made one single loop on it and it made a perfect tight fit to the throttle body to pedal.

    I love what you've done with your car! This is all very helpful. I do have a question about the brakes though. When you put the new engine in it did you also upgrade the brakes? And if not, with the new engine would something like an ABS upgrade be possible? I've heard some people upgraded their Camaros to disc brakes all-round by using the parts from Corvettes from the same era, but no one ever mentions if they were able to carry over ABS as well. I am very much looking to make a daily out of a classic in the next two years and am doing all my homework now, including weighing up all my options when it comes to implementing more "modern" safety features. If you've got any input that would be awesome. Enjoy your ride!

    I've had my 88 Camaro for 12 years now(first car) haven't driven it more than 500 or so miles in the last 6 or 7 years(total, not each year lol) but here soon I'm going to start collecting parts to do a 5.3 swap. My first item to hunt down is going to be an ls1 t56 since thats likely going to be the most expensive item. I'll be shickled titless if i can find a complete one for 1500

    I'm gunna start a 6.0 swap on my s15 when money allows due to the oil pump dying out in my 2.8 I plan on getting everything before I start the swap I just want everything cleaner then stock and bring the truck up where it deserves to be I plan on backing it with a 4l80e but I wouldn't mind a 6 speed auto just for the extra gear.

    I have a complete 05 Chevy 1 ton van with 6.0 (out of an Avalanche) and 4 speed auto to swap out to an 88 Camaro. Hoped to use virtually ALL the electrics and components out of the van, except the air con, due to location.

      Oh yea as long as you have everything, you can make it work no problem with the truck harness. I got my motor separate so I went with a retrofit harness instead.

      Appreciate your vid and all the info. I am replacing the van (740,000 miles for work) and the body on the old one is shot, but eng. and trans are good, so wanted to do a 3rd gen for a while, so here we go. Thanks again.

    Looks good. My question is when did swapping LS motors into everything other than what they came in become a thing? I'm just now getting back into the car scene as my boys are getting old enough to be into it and man things have changed. Turning a 350 into a 383 stroker was thing to do back in my day.

    I hate 3rd gens but this one I would drive the fuck out of. Looks awesome! I love it! You did a great job! Wish you lived by Oklahoma City, I have a 350Z that I want to swap in a few years when I get my medical bills paid off & could really use your knowledge since I had brain surgery & now I'm paralyzed on my right side. Suck because now I have to drive a auto. No more manual transmissions for me but just happy to be able to drive! Anyway, great job!

    Bro $300 for that engine? Damn. That’s a good deal. I’m looking for a 5.3 for my ‘86 firebird trans am. Can’t find much under $600. Anything under that price is either incomplete or has 200k+ miles.

    • @bossgang2x
      @bossgang2x 4 роки тому

      Bro you won't find 1 unless you know someone personally who is willing to give you a deal on a complete 1 for under $600. I paid $275 for my long block & it was incomplete however it only had 95k on the motor

  • @matthewmaldonado5584
    @matthewmaldonado5584 6 років тому

    This is old by now but I believe if you get an LS from a 98-02 camaro, you don’t have to notch the crossmember for the oil pan

    • @lsxmatt
      @lsxmatt  6 років тому

      My pan is from an 02. The motor fit without the notch, but under hard acceleration it would touch the k member and vibrate the whole car. Notching makes it waaay easier to drop the motor in too.

      LsxMatt Thanks a lot for the clarification. I still have to take out the 383TPI and T-5, and find a motor and trans. (Going with the camaro but 4K for motor&trans pulled out is $. Will definitely take your video for help and thanks again!
