For me, this song is a clear message by Sabaton to Terror: mess with us (our loved ones, our homeland, Europe, choose anything) and we'll kick your ass. Plus, this disgust in Joakim's voice. Don't mind the missing rhyme scheme, the song's much more expressive the way it is.

I live in Sweden and was 10 on 9/11. I was home from school because I was sick, so I was just watching tv and all of a sudden every channel was just covering the attack. My mom was actually in new york for work in some other sky scraper in the financial district. But because of what was happening neither I nor my dad could get through to her, we were obviously extremely worried. But right after the first plane had hit she'd rented a car and driven upstate to some friends and later called us from there.
I was only 5 years old, I had no clue what was going on, but even here in Europe I felt that something big was happening. I only figured out when I was 9 (4 years later) that what I felt back then was 9/11. Even though I knew about the events of 9/11 way before that. I think it was the only time in my life I felt that way.
This is a odd song by Sabaton. Usually there is a feeling that Sabaton is honoring someone or a group (most of their songs), or calling for remembrance (The Final Solution). This song is angry and accusatory, so aside from the fact that it is an early Sabaton song, the harshness might well be the intention as it's topic is terror attacks and terror warfare. This one feels rushed as well, but it's still not horrible.

Yes, knowing a lot of Sabaton's catalog brings really interesting perspective to this. It's almost like Sabaton, representing the courageous soldiery of centuries, spits on the cowards who "fight without a uniform." Contrast to "Hearts of Iron," which, even though it's about German soldiers in WWII, "the baddies," honors their goal of saving civilians and surrendering to the West.

On 9/11 I was at work (NL is 6 hours ahead of New York). Just before 4PM I was packing my bag and heared a small plane hit the WTC in NYC, I presumed this concerned a Cessna and thus caused minimal damage. After I arrived home I got word there was a 2nd plane and the first was not a small plane but an airliner as well. My dad who was at home, followed the news after the first plane crashed into the WTC, Dutch news showed live CNN footage and my dad saw the 2nd plane crash live during the broadcast of the news. Related to the song I would say there is a vibe I get, but I do agree the lyrics are not always flowing. Still there is a kind of urgency to tell the story in Joakim's voice. But when I compare it to Primo Victoria (song), I prefer the latter.
For me living in Perth Australia, New York was 12 hours behind us, so 9/11 happened on primetime television in Perth. I had just finished watching the first of a two part show on the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission) Channel 2 when the credits ended for the first show, it immediately flashed up to a building on fire. I thought that it was the beginning of the next episode so I got up, got some snacks, sat down in time to see the second aircraft hit the towers. At that moment I realised the world had changed. I had friends with the US Navy, ironically on the two carriers that were in the general area the USS Enterprise and the USS Carl Vinson and when they stopped sending emails to me I knew right there and then, it was now just a matter of time before we were at war. ironically the Australian Prime Minister at the time was in Washington and was due to being the Pentagon later that day. It was while he was in Washington that he invoked the treaty between Australia and the United States that plunged us into the war against the Taliban. One effect that I did notice here in Perth during that time was the wearing of U.S. Navy Baseball Caps to show support for the USA, Perth being a regular port of coal for the United states Navy. Then the terrorist attack happened in Bali in October 2002 which affected Australia, As one person said, they attacked us in our playground, Bali Indonesia are being a popular tourist destination for Australians then and now. In many ways I have not gotten over 9/11, the shock of it, and I have to admit I yearn for a time when I never heard the words Taliban, 9/11, Afghanistan, Kandahar, and so many other words associated with the war on terrorism. Yet the real irony at least for me is that while the attack happened here in Perth at night time, the 11th of September 2001 here in Perth was a very nice and pleasant day… enough said.

It's a funny thing talking about an event like this, primarily because even though it's been more than 20 years in some respects it still feels like yesterday. As for Sabaton’s song, it's a great song don't get me wrong and it has a powerful message, but like yourself sometimes the lack of rhyming does give you a headache, but ultimately it forces you to listen to the lyrics, at least that’s the way I feel about it. On my opinion of terrorism, it's as simple as this…it's one charismatic idiot telling a bunch of fools that their life would be better if they did something that the charismatic idiot hasn't got the guts to do. In my mind one of the ultimate feats of cowardice that exists, especially the religious aspects, for like yourself I'm not religious at all, in fact I feel religion is solely responsible for 90% of the agony the world is suffering… enough said.

As far as Europe, it was about 3pm in Warsaw when that horror started. About 10am NY time my mom called, and then everyone else asking if we're fine. Then lines got overloaded and there wasn't any connection with Europe for next two days. NEVER FORGET 🇵🇱🇺🇲 This song may not have the best rhymed lyrics, but it is ( in my opinion ) one of important songs in Sabaton library, since it touches the subject very much alive till today. I was in the Midwest. I just got into the cafeteria at college and noticed that the place was unusually quiet. I looked up at the TVs and wondered why they had a disaster movie on instead of the usual news. Took a few minutes to realize that *was* the news. Spent the rest of the day in a daze, hearing people talk about bombs, accidents, and other rumors. No one knew what was going on but it was all anyone was talking about. And I didn't know anyone in New York!
While the Boston Tea Party could be called a terrorist attack, most of the American Revolution's actions were against military targets, so I'm not sure if they'd count as terrorism. That said, when 9/11 happened, I did wonder if this is what Grandpa felt like hearing about Pearl Harbor.
I'm not sure the target matters. I still consider IEDs used against troops terrorism. I think we just feel it more when civilians are attacked. I agree with the pearl harbor feel of 9/11.
@@TouchyReactions The thing with IEDs is that they *aren't* targeted. They could be set off by *anyone* who gets too close. But, yes, we definitely feel it more when civilians are attacked because they didn't sign up to be in a combat zone.

Mines scattered where anyone could step on one should be considered terrorism, though that particular practice seems to have been more common back before terrorism was really a term.

Yeah, the thing about their older songs is it usually takes a few listens for you to get in to enjoying it because of the weird writing scheme, when you compare it with today's songs. It took me a few listens of some of them. Once you do get in to one of the songs like that though, you don't look back and you don't even realise the lyrics don't rhyme when you listen. It took me over a dozen listens of Attero Dominatus to get in to it, now that I have, it's quite high on my tier list. Unfortunately Sabaton are in an odd position now. A lot of old fans liked Sabaton because of the deeper, heavier metal older songs like this BUT a lot of new fans are coming in because of the newer, pop-esque faster rhyming songs. I, similar to you, prefer the latter, but I don't think the old ones are bad either, they are just different.
I must admit that I have a hard time seeing this as deeper and heavier than what they do now. More difficult yes, a bit heavier than some newer songs but lighter than others, but definately not deeper.

I was in my early 20's on a Security Team outside of D.C. on 9/11 for a company with DOD contracts. i got off duty and was on my way home when the attacks started .so i was recalled back into work and didn't get to go home for about a week. thats all i can say about that. but as i was on in active reserve at that time i thought for sure i would be called up as i was 11B.
I remember I was at sea, commanding a merchant vessel on 9/11. My wife sent me a fax about what was happening, I advised the crew who answered that she must have been traumatized by the last Bruce Willis movie. On the next day we could catch some short waves broadcasting and learned it was true. In Europe we have a long history with terrorism, but it was small scale terror by small groups of extremists. The NY attack was the first one in such a scale and had required a serious coordination, like by the coordinated attacks in Paris and Brussels. Your analysis goes straight to the point. Talking about terror, WW1 began with the assassination of the Austrian Achduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo.
My parents were on a Mediterranean Cruise on 9/11 and were on the second to last stop in Turkey. My dad was watching TV and wasn't really paying attention and just saw a building on fire before realizing what had happened. At that point, no one knew where the planes came from or who hijacked them, but eventually they got to the airport in Istanbul and were escorted by the Turkish military holding machine guns and told not to talk to anyone. When they got on the plane, they had a refueling stop in Ireland and then were on their way back to the US and the pilot said they wanted to land in New York, but the airport was closed so he said they would be landing somewhere on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. They did end up landing in New York and were the first plane from the Middle East to land in the US after 9/11. They actually got back sooner than my uncle who was in Kansas.
I was 6 when it happened and I can actually recall it pretty vividly, I was at school here in what we call "6 years" it's like the class before 1st grade but after kindergarten and I was just playing around with a friend and one of our teachers rolled in the tv on a cart thing, not so that we could see what was happening I believe it was only me and 2 other kids in the classroom at that point, so our teacher just brought it in so that she could see what was happening. I saw the footage on TV and being a dumb 6 year old it didn't even register to me what was happening. Teachers didn't say anything about it, most likely not to "worry" us kids so we just kept playing like nothing was wrong. I guess that is what some people call childhood innocence (or ignorance) Edit : There has only been two events that classify as terrorist attacks that have personally moved me, and it's not because I don't care about other people, it's more of a disconnect I would say, it's easy to disconnect from these things a lot of the time. The two that have moved me personally was the Utøya mass shooting of kids in Norway, both because it happened on my birthday and a girl staying at my family home cuz she was going to school in Sweden at the time had a friend of hers killed during it, even though I didn't know the person who died I saw the pain on the girl staying at our place face, and this was a girl that I felt was pretty much like a sister to me so seeing her just get informed that a good friend of hers was now dead, it hurt. The other one was the attack in Stockholm where a man drove a big rig trough a crowd off people in the most people dense shopping street in Stockholm, I will always remember that because me and my brother had just been into Stockholm to visit a computer/geek store and we were in the car on the way home listening to the radio and the radio host was just as confused as everyone else, he couldn't make any sense of anything that he got told during it, we didn't even know the rough idea of what was happening, the only thing we had heard on the radio was apparently "gun shots" had been reported, so me and my brother confused as all hell just walked into our parents home and told our mom we had heard something was going on on the radio, and the second we say it the news just kicks in on the TV and we learn what was happening. The thing I learned from both of those is that it's absolutely easy to feel bad when these things happen but also to feel disconnected from it all. It's another thing entirely when it hits close to home
I am originally from Shanksville, PA a town so small and so unlikely to be a target of a terrorist attack. One 9/11 I was still a achitecture design student, one who had studied the world trade center and visited it, In addition, I was a white water raft guide, every year, new york city fire departments came to the river to run a trip with us with their families, after the attack, there was no one left to come the next year. I have a lot of friends that I guided with that spent a lot of time searching the pile for the lost, they still carry that weight.
I wasn't even born when 9/11 happened thinking about what my parents told me -them being volinteer firefighters- is something i dont know how to form into words
The music composition reminds me somewhat of Primo Victoria. As always their older stuff is kind of hit-or-miss. It's not necessarily that the lack of a rhyme scheme makes the song hard to listen to, for me, but more so that it feels like the lyrics don't match up well with the music. Primo Victoria is a good example of a song with limited to no rhyme scheme, however the lyrical composition matches up pretty well with the music and it makes the song flow and makes it catchy.
@@brigidtheirish I don't think this has ever been done in swedish. At least I have never heard of them writing in swedish and then translating it. Carolus Rex was done in the opposite way, first in english and then translated to swedish.

I knew a couple of people who went to the Manchester arena bombing back in I think It was 2017? I also went to the bardo national museum in tunisia maybe 6 months before it was attacked, 21 people (mostly tourists) were held hostage and executed there, still get chills thinking about it, like, how easily it could have been me
During 9/11 I was 2 so I don't remember but my parents told me that they were walking when this happen and saw on tv in restraunt they were passing relation and thought it was another action movie. Later they learned what happened.

This is old school sabaton. When they were more of a metal band. I personally prefer the older songs. The new ones are fantastic don't get me wrong but the old ones have a idk a thing I can't quite express. Also songs don't have to rhyme dude, it's not hip hop its metal. Its not a poem it's a message. A statement.

With this one I completely agree that it feels like they wrote the lyrics and randomly placed them in the song. You said the same thing with "Cliffs of Gallipoli" and there I don't agree at all. In that one, while the lyrics didn't rhyme, they still fit the music perfectly. Here, the music is more like a carpet of sound, and the lyrics are just thrown on top of it. And I completely agree that this one is among the very weakest ones. I do not listen to this one if I have a choice. And for once, I have something bad to say about the history video too. :) Indy didn't really differentiate between terror acts and murders. The purpose of terror acts are to scare the people, to terrorize, while murdering leaders are something very different. It feels like he lumped those two together..
Well, technically, killing a leader is a act of terror, your leader just died and no panic will be caused? I dont think so, even if you caught the culprit, the one that leads you still dead, the act of terrorism includes assassination, kidnapping, hijacking, bombing and even cyber attacks
Im Canadian and was in grade 8 on 1911, here they basically said "don't worry".............. The next day an Arab kid in my class blew off a big can on bear spray and gassed the whole class room, They didn't even charge him if I remember right but the police took him out in handcuffs. (we all where also not allowed to go home or tell anyone it happened)

Removing the story from the song. This song is definitely not in my top 50 sabaton songs. Let alone anywhere near the top, it's definitely just a bland filler song. But nothing will be worse than "In flanders fields" for me. Very unpopular opinion, i know. But it has none of the characteristics of a Sabaton song besides it being based off something historical, Yes i understand it's significance and that it's a poem reading. Doesn't change the fact that you could slap a different artist's name of the front and if you didn't know better. There'd be zero chance of pinning it as a Sabaton song.

A lot of old fans liked Sabaton because of the deeper, heavier metal older songs like this BUT a lot of new fans are coming in because of the newer, pop-esque faster rhyming songs. I, similar to you, prefer the latter, but I don't think the old ones are bad either, they are just different.
That makes sense. Bands evolve over time and their sound will change with them.
I must admit that I have a hard time seeing this as deeper and heavier than what they do now. More difficult yes, a bit heavier than some newer songs but lighter than others, but definately not deeper.

I was in my early 20's on a Security Team outside of D.C. on 9/11 for a company with DOD contracts. i got off duty and was on my way home when the attacks started .so i was recalled back into work and didn't get to go home for about a week. thats all i can say about that. but as i was on in active reserve at that time i thought for sure i would be called up as i was 11B.

I remember I was at sea, commanding a merchant vessel on 9/11. My wife sent me a fax about what was happening, I advised the crew who answered that she must have been traumatized by the last Bruce Willis movie. On the next day we could catch some short waves broadcasting and learned it was true. In Europe we have a long history with terrorism, but it was small scale terror by small groups of extremists. The NY attack was the first one in such a scale and had required a serious coordination, like by the coordinated attacks in Paris and Brussels. Your analysis goes straight to the point. Talking about terror, WW1 began with the assassination of the Austrian Achduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo.

My parents were on a Mediterranean Cruise on 9/11 and were on the second to last stop in Turkey. My dad was watching TV and wasn't really paying attention and just saw a building on fire before realizing what had happened. At that point, no one knew where the planes came from or who hijacked them, but eventually they got to the airport in Istanbul and were escorted by the Turkish military holding machine guns and told not to talk to anyone. When they got on the plane, they had a refueling stop in Ireland and then were on their way back to the US and the pilot said they wanted to land in New York, but the airport was closed so he said they would be landing somewhere on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. They did end up landing in New York and were the first plane from the Middle East to land in the US after 9/11. They actually got back sooner than my uncle who was in Kansas.

I was 6 when it happened and I can actually recall it pretty vividly, I was at school here in what we call "6 years" it's like the class before 1st grade but after kindergarten and I was just playing around with a friend and one of our teachers rolled in the tv on a cart thing, not so that we could see what was happening I believe it was only me and 2 other kids in the classroom at that point, so our teacher just brought it in so that she could see what was happening. I saw the footage on TV and being a dumb 6 year old it didn't even register to me what was happening. Teachers didn't say anything about it, most likely not to "worry" us kids so we just kept playing like nothing was wrong. I guess that is what some people call childhood innocence (or ignorance)
Edit : There has only been two events that classify as terrorist attacks that have personally moved me, and it's not because I don't care about other people, it's more of a disconnect I would say, it's easy to disconnect from these things a lot of the time. The two that have moved me personally was the Utøya mass shooting of kids in Norway, both because it happened on my birthday and a girl staying at my family home cuz she was going to school in Sweden at the time had a friend of hers killed during it, even though I didn't know the person who died I saw the pain on the girl staying at our place face, and this was a girl that I felt was pretty much like a sister to me so seeing her just get informed that a good friend of hers was now dead, it hurt.
The other one was the attack in Stockholm where a man drove a big rig trough a crowd off people in the most people dense shopping street in Stockholm, I will always remember that because me and my brother had just been into Stockholm to visit a computer/geek store and we were in the car on the way home listening to the radio and the radio host was just as confused as everyone else, he couldn't make any sense of anything that he got told during it, we didn't even know the rough idea of what was happening, the only thing we had heard on the radio was apparently "gun shots" had been reported, so me and my brother confused as all hell just walked into our parents home and told our mom we had heard something was going on on the radio, and the second we say it the news just kicks in on the TV and we learn what was happening.
The thing I learned from both of those is that it's absolutely easy to feel bad when these things happen but also to feel disconnected from it all. It's another thing entirely when it hits close to home

I am originally from Shanksville, PA a town so small and so unlikely to be a target of a terrorist attack. One 9/11 I was still a achitecture design student, one who had studied the world trade center and visited it, In addition, I was a white water raft guide, every year, new york city fire departments came to the river to run a trip with us with their families, after the attack, there was no one left to come the next year. I have a lot of friends that I guided with that spent a lot of time searching the pile for the lost, they still carry that weight.

The music composition reminds me somewhat of Primo Victoria. As always their older stuff is kind of hit-or-miss. It's not necessarily that the lack of a rhyme scheme makes the song hard to listen to, for me, but more so that it feels like the lyrics don't match up well with the music. Primo Victoria is a good example of a song with limited to no rhyme scheme, however the lyrical composition matches up pretty well with the music and it makes the song flow and makes it catchy.

@@brigidtheirish I don't think this has ever been done in swedish. At least I have never heard of them writing in swedish and then translating it. Carolus Rex was done in the opposite way, first in english and then translated to swedish.
@@jonashansson2320 Ah. Wasn't sure. I figured since they're a Swedish band they'd write songs in Swedish and then translate for an international audience.
@@brigidtheirish I think that would be harder, most likely they just switch their brains over to english and write it as any native english speakers would. At least that's how I do when I write (not songs though) in english. :)

I also went to the bardo national museum in tunisia maybe 6 months before it was attacked, 21 people (mostly tourists) were held hostage and executed there, still get chills thinking about it, like, how easily it could have been me

During 9/11 I was 2 so I don't remember but my parents told me that they were walking when this happen and saw on tv in restraunt they were passing relation and thought it was another action movie. Later they learned what happened.

I was only 7 during 9/11 so i don't remember much other than there was alot of stress coming from the teachers but they didn't tell us what had happened. I assume i heard about it when i got home but don't remember much else.
Maybe listen to one of the new ones to mix it up with these older ones.

With this one I completely agree that it feels like they wrote the lyrics and randomly placed them in the song. You said the same thing with "Cliffs of Gallipoli" and there I don't agree at all. In that one, while the lyrics didn't rhyme, they still fit the music perfectly. Here, the music is more like a carpet of sound, and the lyrics are just thrown on top of it.
And I completely agree that this one is among the very weakest ones. I do not listen to this one if I have a choice.
And for once, I have something bad to say about the history video too. :) Indy didn't really differentiate between terror acts and murders. The purpose of terror acts are to scare the people, to terrorize, while murdering leaders are something very different. It feels like he lumped those two together..
I chalk it up to Sabaton learning what their sound was at the time. They morph and change over time.
Well, technically, killing a leader is a act of terror, your leader just died and no panic will be caused? I dont think so, even if you caught the culprit, the one that leads you still dead, the act of terrorism includes assassination, kidnapping, hijacking, bombing and even cyber attacks

and was in grade 8 on 1911, here they basically said "don't worry".............. The next day an Arab kid in my class blew off a big can on bear spray and gassed the whole class room, They didn't even charge him if I remember right but the police took him out in handcuffs. (we all where also not allowed to go home or tell anyone it happened)

Removing the story from the song. This song is definitely not in my top 50 sabaton songs. Let alone anywhere near the top, it's definitely just a bland filler song.
But nothing will be worse than "In flanders fields" for me. Very unpopular opinion, i know. But it has none of the characteristics of a Sabaton song besides it being based off something historical, Yes i understand it's significance and that it's a poem reading. Doesn't change the fact that you could slap a different artist's name of the front and if you didn't know better. There'd be zero chance of pinning it as a Sabaton song.
