Just made this. I don't have anything to reference it to because I never had caramel syrup before, but I think it turnt out good. I think I may have burnt it but it does smell like caramel. Only thing I did different was add water with the sugar to prevent crystallization (and you can add lemon juice too. It really helps. But not a lot or it'll taste like lemons or limes)
