Great review. Matches my experience with the 70-300. It is also compatible with Fuji's 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverter. I don't recall you mentioning that in your review.
The switch for automatic/manual aperture control is there on every Fujifilm lens with variable aperture (and some constant aperture zooms e.g. 10-24mm/4), because if the lens had had predefined values on the ring, the lower values would not have matched the real aperture size of the lens if it were zoomed at longer focal lenghts.

The close up abilities were a surprise to me when I bought this lens. A very pleasant surprise. Thank you for the in depth test.
Excellent review Dustin. I really appreciate that you separate technical specs from the esthetic quality of the images. Rendering, bokeh, fall off and close, up are so much more important to me than the corner of Canadian currency at 200%. ;-) I'm a Sony shooter with the 70-350, but if I ever decided to switch, this lens would be top of my list.
I got this lens last year and I got a lot of use out of it. My biggest problem with the copy I had was that the manual focus ring decided to stop working out of nowhere, even though I took very good care of the lens. When I ended up getting the X-T5, both the camera and lens paired well with each other.
Too bad about the focus ring!

I was finally able to order one from Best Buy after months of waiting.
Buyer Beware! Ive caught Best Buy not once, but twice selling me an “open Box/Used lens’ for a new price! I called them out on it, and also, their packaging and shipping is deplorable. Just a word of caution. Peace

As always a great review! Would you choose this over the Tamron 18-300 for Fuji X-Mount? Im not concerned about loosing the wider view of the Tamron. I have the Tamron now but I'm not sure if I should keep it? I respect your opinions.
Superzoom lenses like the Tamron are always going to be more compromised optically than a dedicated telephoto zoom like this. The tradeoff is the lost flexibility. I would choose this lens if you want the improved image quality.

I didn't have the lenses at the same time, but they aren't really equivalent lenses. A superzoom is not the same as a dedicated telephoto in design or performance.
Hi, as always great review, I always enjoy watching them! I'm deciding between buying Fuji 70-300mm and Canon RF 100-400mm. Which one would you say have the best overall quality if they are both priced the same, and what would you say are the biggest strength / weakness between them?
The Fuji has a larger maximum aperture and I would say slightly nicer color. The Canon delivers slightly better focus performance, though that might depend on the camera.
I enjoyed your review. I have been considering this lens to pair with a fuji xt10 for a trip to Tanzania/Serengeti. Will this combination work well for a safari trip?

I have a question about the Fuji XF 70-300mm lens.
Can it blur the background when you focus on an object or person that is 15-20 meters away?
That depends on a lot of factors, but primarily how far the background is beyond the subject and what your standard for blurring out is. This is not going to compare to a lens like the 200mm F2 in that kind of situation, but if the background is far enough away you could get a reasonably blurred out background.
Nice examples, wish you could have included video samples as you have some interesting locations.
I do tend to focus on photography, though I have tried to integrate a little more video recently.
Any thoughts/experience using the 70-300 for sports photography from anyone here?

@@georgedavall9449 I know, 4.0, but it's the closest price I can afford and get reach. So, thought it couldn't hurt to ask! f4 should be fine for outdoor stuff.
@@charliejg Hey Charlie, I get it, and for outdoors, in good light, you should be Ok. Obviously it will not perform as well as a “faster” zoom lens, but if it is mounted on a good camera, you should be OK. Shoot with as wide an aperture as you can, and don't be afraid to raise the ISO up. Good luck!
@@georgedavall9449 Thanks! I don't have it yet. I'm going to try and shoot some stuff with the 90 f2 I got back in fall. I'll be starting with simple kids T Ball so it should be fine. I shot some last year with a Canon FD 135mm all manual focus. That was throwback fun!! LOL!

I think that's probably true.
I used to think a good 70-300 could never exist, then again I was a Nikon shooter at that point with a short pit-stop in Canon, so I got to try all the turds from Nikon, Canon, Sigma and Tamron.
LOL. Sony's 70-350mm is also very good. Canon L- series 70-300mm was one of my favorite lenses, but obviously much larger and more expensive.
No doubt an attractive lens, question is when will one be available to order?
