XC 50-230 4life! XC lenses have the best stab because they’re all plastic and the components are lighter, and my X-S10 is 26MP so a little crop is no big deal. It’s easier for AF to track little critters when you’re not zoomed in so tight anyway. I get really great bird and squirrel photos with that combo. You should try the XC lens on your X-T4.
The GH6 with the 50-200 will be almost the same (equivalency) as your XT4+70-300 set-up, but with good 4k 120p and probably better video stabilization. I really want to see that combination tested...
@@cameraconspiracies GH6 can crop a further 1.5x on 4k 120, no upscaling. So 600mm with the 50-200. But so far I haven't seen anyone test the pixel to pixel crop in 4k 120
You can track with back button focus too (in theory at least), go to AF Settings and switch "INSTANT AF SETTING" to AF-C and then just press and hold the AF ON button
Yeah, I am coming to that conclusion too. Someone on a Fuji FB site said though that 1080p is achieved by line skipping so is not the best, but I have yet to see that using my eyes. I guess it depends on how closely you look, and I am pretty sure the Fuji cameras hold their own agains the competition TBH. Too many pixel peepers around, and perhaps they were Sony/Canon/Nikon fans :)
You know... recently I bought myself a big new fancy high end 4k monitor, so far I have not seen much difference compared to my old one, but now watching your bird footage everything came to life, the colors looked fantastic and life like as if I was seeing it through a window. Now I can only think why not every 4k video look this good, must be that Fuji magic.
What? Fuji photos are the reason why I switched after 10 years of wedding photography with Canon (and 14+ years with Canon in general) to Fuji. I shot Canon for photos and Sony A7s for videos and when the XT3 came out it was the perfect hybrid for me.
Ok I’m now a Fuji cult member initiate because of you. That’s why I’m here. I got an X-T4 two days before my kid’s college graduation, learned the basics (coming from Sony land), and took some of the best photos of my life. Thanks much
Funny, I was shooting a Euroasian Wren for the first time earlier this week. I think what your noticing regarding the magic of getting close, is actually the dof. Very subtle amounts of bokeh creating more 3D pop, and the nice creamy tones. You can actually see it in the sony shot on the rounded vertical tree bits as you're talking about it. Subtle bokeh fall off. Essentially (basing this off of full frame) at 200mm F4 filming something 30 feet or so away, the bokeh is subtle. Not a bad image, but the without amazing shit happening, the magic may be absent. If you zoom into 300mm or my full 400mm reach, (constant F4) magic is achieved on that same subject.. and even at 200mm, as long as you can get 15 feet or so. Because the APS-C lenses have all that reach, you are actually getting very similar results, which is why you've been noticing sometimes even Olympus is holding it's own. Anyways to re-cap, closer to the subject at any focal length increases your fabled Toneh Magic. You probably know this stuff, but with long lenses it though technically the same is different. Start using your zoom, and notice your various distances at said zoom range. This is actually where photo's come in handy since the EXIF data will tell you what your zoom and f stop were. Of course allot of what I said also depends on how far/what's immediately behind or even in front of the subject.
Sony A7RV + 16-35 F4 PZ + Tamron 150-500 or Fuji XT5 + 8 + 100-400 or Panasonic G9 II + 9mm + 100-400 + Panasonic HC-X1500 camcorder 25-600 For everyday photography and full person subject with blur background street photography and rare occasionally shoot video on it plus slow motion? I like the Sony 4 ways screen, I think it will be nice experience to have the dedicated tactile photography dials on the Fuji and Panasonic setups will be the lightest and 300 fps plus my favorite color is yellow hence I like the Panasonic menu aesthetic! I want my picture to looks realistic and want to shoot JPG/HEIF mostly hence I no longer really into the Fuji film simulation. I into ultramacro but I not sure should I take it into consideration because you can just google them as they mostly looks the same. I consider full size body or actual pocketable camera because camera in between don't provide good handling yet still need a bag to carry anyway, since RX100 can't provide all what I need, I will just use iPhone 15 for pocket camera. I'm not a bokeh person but want everything in focus with story and creativity and just has few projects need blur background.
if you have issues with photo stills on fuji, i suggest tou dig into the AF settings modes first! the AF setting makes a huge difference in how the system works with acquisition and retaining subject focus…
@@colinhoward2200 The answer is probably that it's only an increase in performance: the camera is applying a crop, which is better to have since 4k that way is still possible and pixel count is closer so the camera has to do less upscaling (I think). Another thing, if you use less pixels your readout speed will we faster since it's using just a portion of the frame. Even if those things weren't relevant, you still get a perfect 4k video with a longer reach. (Think how good it would be a res crop, a precise 4k crop, it would make your lenses skyrocket in therms of focal lenght

70-300mm. Ordered in Jan 2022. Decided to go to a ball game in Sept. Check the rules about bringing cameras? Nah, I don't have the lens. Thought exits brain. 5 seconds later I get a call from my friendly camera store. Lens is in! Worked nice. For photos. I don't know how to shoot video. And you aren't supposed to do that at a ball game anyhow. Anyhow.
and that red-tailed is banded! Great look at both those lenses! LOL on California wren....It is Carolina..that said, California might describe its spirit! So true about getting closer being the key no matter what lens!
Someone lend this boy a GH6 so that we can hear the Pannysong again. FYI they made the 50-200mm a lot easier to use after complaints about the 100-400 apparently. Also lol at the Olympus being officially dead, formerly the best system ever.
I am still picking around here in Vancouver trying to decide: do I get the 150-600 at the cost of more debt, or a used 100-400 (a bit less debt) or the 70-300 (less, less debt). Meanwhile I have, if anyone wants it, a Zeiss Milvus 50/1.4 ZE (Canon) which can be adapted to Fuji and is then a nice portrait focal length 75/1.4. But I digress. As someone pointed out below, get the lens you'll actually take with you. If its too heavy, WTF. That's the reason I switched from Canon DSLR to Fujifilm--weight, size, and the cost of lenses. Did this video help me decide? Hell no.
1. I hope you saved that buzzer sound. Perfect to use during the '10 questions of knowledge given" videos when someone does not tell you what they are going to use the camera for 2. The bird committing suicide could be the new Tommen Game of Thrones GIF. If you don't do it, I'm stealing it. Credit of course to you.
Dude you are reading my mind on what I'm contemplating right now and am hoping I can trust your takes. Cause looks like I'm gonna follow your takes. LOL
The 70-300 is nice, but for indoor shots, or low light, I'd prefer the 100-400. But I guess for outdoor wildlife shots, I can see the advantages to the 70-300. So you prefer the Fuji X-T4 with 70-300 over the Olympus E-M1 and 75-300? The Olympus 75-300 would have more reach.
I've been considering a longer reach lens for sports photography(sorry) and your video showed up in the search results for the 70-300. I watched it again....forgot how funny this video was from the first watch. "...you'll be fine, just ice it....I'll be alone forever..." LOL!!! Thanks for the laughs....again that is! I won't risk ending up in a "I helped these 10 people" videos by asking your thoughts about these two lenses for photography... 🙂
Kasey great video, the hawk ripping up a shrew is cleansing for my soul. Question - Canon RP + cheapo new RF 100-400 f5.6-8000… any chance that would give good results for wildlife pics & videos?
Oops, should've watched a little longer before commenting. The hawk spit out the GMO-filled squirrel! Humanity is saved…except for Putin and his evil empire ready to unleash catastrophic consequences on weak western leaders like Brandon and Justin Castreau.
Some great vids there makes me wonder whether you get these Racoons and Hawks in downtown Tronto or are you heading deep into the back-country? In the UK all the wildlife apart from pigeons have long since fled the cities.
@@cameraconspiracies Well sort of, but most things left in London like deer and foxes are semi-domesticated these days. And you definitely don't get owls out in daylight. Wish we had racoons. You're really lucky.
so these reflex lenses are 1/2 as long so shake is minimized. the problem is they are all f8. This one however they built to f5.6 which is amazing. tiny light compact manual focus. combine with a camera that has ibis like a gh6 or g9 and you get 800mm. SIGMA MIRROR-TELEPHOTO MULTI COATED 400mm F5.6 Reflex for Nikon F
Since you are pretty confident the Fuji is better for telephoto, compared to Olympus and Sony and plus you would have a lot of play money selling the G master.... Since you are doing wildlife now, look down too! There's so many neat critters crawling around, on the ground, spiders making webs, all sorts of crazy stuff! It is the most common mistake in WL photo/video.... We forget there's a crazy world under our feet! I am a Micro Four Thirds guy, so I can only speak from my experience in that system, as well as using for more stills.... Olympus has 2 of them 60mm T2.8 Macro and 30mm Macro T3.5. Panasonic 30mm T2.8 Power OIS (stab is compatible with Pany Dual IS). And the 45mm T2.8 The Olympus 60mm is Super sharp, might be the sharpest lens in the system. It is also weather-sealed, and has a focus limiter (Far, close, and full range settings). If you were to get only one of the 4 macros, this should be your top choice! The Pany 30mm is better, both IQ plus, it's physically shorter too, for portability amd of coarse has the possibility to sync IS, or even IS on a non-IS body! 30mm Oly, not a terrible lens, and cheap, but not much cheaper than Pany 30mm. 45mm f2.8, for stills, absolutely, great lens, but for video, I am not sure, I don't do a lot of videos.... I can say it's an old out of date design, and is not the greatest AF, and I bet it may have other old tech issues (for video), making it the worst option of the 4 more modern lenses. My suggestion... Both the Oly 60mm and Pany 30mm, so you have a more choice of field of view. I bet the G master sold, could buy you both those, as well as a a macro for Sony. Thanks for the great vids!
@@HigherJr No there is a version just for video called Topaz Video Enhance AI. The upscaling AI is superb but you need a mac M1 or equivalent if you don't want to wait days to render. I just upscaled 2.7k dji mav mini footage to 4k and it looks no different to a mav air in native 4k. Upscaling fuji 240fps to 4k is also superb. A little expensive for the software but for pro work it's a game changer.
I am pretty sure Final Cut Pro compressor does the same thing with upscaling if you export from 1080p to 4K. I suspect that DaVinci resolve does the same? The videos posted here were pretty impressive to my eye of the 240fps footage.
I want to film bird footage in hd 240 fps, cannot edit 4k on current pc. Also HD looks magical, so what would be better X-S10 or X-T4 with either 70-300 or 100 400?
I use the 70-300mm with the XF 2X TC-only stills, never video-because I was often dissatisfied with the 100-400mm reach of my old Canon APS-C system. f/11 wide open is not too much of a problem due to the local minimum in sensor noise at ISO 800, and 5-stop IBIS in my X-S10. Fast bursts above 10 fps are too wormy for stills, but maybe ok for median stacking if there is a little subject or camera motion; eg, moon or handheld macro in a light breeze. Risky, though. Used to shoot birds in flight with my Canon system, lost a couple of seasons to injury, (really appreciate the size & weight advantage of the Fuji system) only now starting to reacquire that skill. Fuji is slower to focus, but also 70-300 + 2X has a very narrow foiled of view, making it harder to track moving objects. Maybe a more realistic approach would be to just shoot the 70-300 and accept more crop in post while I re-gain skills.
I like your honesty and attitude. But: 1) who is shooting this much video and for whom? 2) who is WATCHING all their videos? It's like the old days being stuck watching someone's vacation movies or slideshows. I'll stick to still photo and not pretend to be a "Spielberg".
Just so you know, this video started off a massive argument between myself and my father - who knew cameras could be cause family members to fall out :D So I have an X-T4 with the 70-300mm and he has a Sony AX700 Camcorder. The test was to be able to pan and zoom on anything. I LOST BADLY :D :D The fact that the zoom lenses are not par focal and do not hold their focus is a big deal for him (and now I have seen how he can hold focus quickly, it is for me too now!!).It is curious, is it not, that camcorders, point and shoots (such as the Sony RX100 and I suspect the EV-1) can hold focus after (or even whilst)zooming, better than Mirrorless Camera backs and zoom lenses that cost many many times more. Can you please find out why this is the case - I can't find a logical answer actually. The thing is he really does have a point especially with wildlife videography. He can start off from a wide angle shot of say a duck on water, get the context of the surroundings, then slowly zoom in to get more detail. The effect is quite pleasing. If I do this using my 70-300mm, it just keeps refocusing and hunting around - it is a total mess TBH by comparison. As the 100-400mm is not par focal either the same issue would apply. I think the same issue applies to all other such camera body / zoom lense combinations. The cinema is certainly not ours in these situations comparatively speaking, and I suspect now I am going to have to watch hours and hours of his footage zooming in on ducks whilst saying "ha - you can't do that can you", and the answer is unfortunately no!! The reality depressing thing is, that his 4K footage is pretty amazing. Maybe time to move over to an AX700!!
the issue is tkur expectations in video versus the reality of cameras and lenses (especially, as you point out), made for stills photography, and in no way recommended officially for video!!! the expectation that any mirrorless with any lens can do video as well as a desicated video camera is just wrong!!! every job has its proper tools, and mirrorless cameras aren’t it for video- it’s at best a stop-gap solution…
You shouldn't be zooming while recording, it's a general rule. Camcorders will always have better stabilization and autofocus. Problem is they look cheap with their small sensors and that one only goes to 350mm. End result on max zoom, it isn't even close and the Sony costs more than the Fuji body. Old men like convenience, not ultimate image quality :)
@@cameraconspiracies LOL - yeah, I have tried those arguments...total fail. Perhaps when we are all older we will just go back to camcorders!! In the mean time totally agree, my footage is way better than his - good job he has never worked out how to read UA-cam comments, as he does watch your videos :D
@@mortenthorpe it is a tricky one for sure. In the consumer market, it is difficult to find a reasonably priced dedicated video recorder that gives you as good image quality due to sensor size restrictions though. Everything is a trade off, and most of us don't have the luxury of carrying around multiple devices, especially if travelling light. Hence I guess why compromises are made. I cycle on a small Brompton fold up bike - so my limit is an X-T4 with a 18-55mm lense (and if I remove the need to take liquid replenishment out with me I can my 70-300 as well). Anything else is out of the question :)
If you sell your house and buy a real cinema zoom lens, they will be both parfocal and have no focus breathing. From what I remember, the old Canon 24-70L was also parfocal, but I could be missremembering. If im not wrong, that would make it the only photo lens I've had with that.
For some reason you remind me of Adam Sandler, perhaps similar mannerisms. Is that being rude 🤔 Its not meant to be. I really enjoyed your video and I don't even shoot movies. Owned the XT4 since release and never used it. Maybe I should, certainly tempting if only to shoot bird suicides 😂 Thanks for making me laugh!! I’ve shot surf on my XT3, 70-300mm and a 1.4 TC had no issues fast auto focus love my 70-300 👍🏼
XC 50-230 4life!
Worms in Fuji Raw is usually happens in lightroom because it doesn't support the fuji x-trans sensor.
I love the way you presented this video!
The GH6 with the 50-200 will be almost the same (equivalency) as your XT4+70-300 set-up, but with good 4k 120p and probably better video stabilization. I really want to see that combination tested...
It's not even close, 400mm vs 580mm in slow mo. Not enough reach without a teleconverter.
@@cameraconspiracies 50-200 is special. I use the 1.4 tele and don't want the 2x. Where it is excellent is when your subject moves.
Had no idea about silver back wild gorilla in Canada. What a fantastic video that is. Congratulations upon your rare discovery, my friend.
I didn’t learn a thing about either lens. But, that bird death jump was worth it.
You should try the 120fps mode, more magic than 60FPS, but better video quality than 240. Kind of the sweet spot for most shots imo.
Love your humor! Thanks for the review and the creative explanations. Sub'd
This is the most brilliant and chaotic video i have seen in a long while
The video of you at the desk looks extra good today.
You know... recently I bought myself a big new fancy high end 4k monitor, so far I have not seen much difference compared to my old one, but now watching your bird footage everything came to life, the colors looked fantastic and life like as if I was seeing it through a window.
Thanks much
Finally, thanks a lot for this video!
This is great footage. I love the backlighting in the 240 sparrow shot. Thanks for the comparison!
Very good video, enjoyed it funny too! I am literally researching witch one of those lenses to get.
Hahahaha this gotta be the most awesome review I've ever seen. It's also really an honest review.
Good advice-'Never try to steal a bear's salmon...they have claws!' The woodpecker footage from the OMD-EM1 m3 looked very nice :-)
Fantastic video with beautiful footages 👌🏻👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻💐😊
My issue with used gear is I often notice there's something wrong with it that the seller didn't disclose and then I can't sell it in good conscience.
Just picked up my Lumix GH6 today, and I’m excited to throw my Panasonic 100 to 300 mm on it!
PLEASE try the Sony A7iv 4k60 with the aps-c 70-350 and share your thoughts! I like how your content has shifted to wildlife! Take care!
you humor is everything
Sony A7RV + 16-35 F4 PZ + Tamron 150-500 or
Fuji XT5 + 8 + 100-400 or
Panasonic G9 II + 9mm + 100-400
+ Panasonic HC-X1500 camcorder 25-600
For everyday photography and full person subject with blur background street photography and rare occasionally shoot video on it plus slow motion?
Liked the Carolina Wren - could feel the toneh.
Beautiful video!
I had picked the 70-300mm, though it took 6 months for it to finally be shipped 😅
if you have issues with photo stills on fuji, i suggest tou dig into the AF settings modes first! the AF setting makes a huge difference in how the system works with acquisition and retaining subject focus…
Use the 1.29x crop for all modes, you can find it inside settings
Think you reduce the size of the sensor used to record the footage? How much of a difference that makes is an interesting question!
00:14 No debat lol cheapest for me ! all good XD 02:35 that's what's all about, having a ( great ) moment... that's love :p lol 03:46 like a pro :D ( and last one lol ) 14:34 loool anything for the shot ! :p great episode ... not only because you come back on Fuji :D
Wildlife photography is like bowhunting. The closer you get, the more satisfying the shot.
So true
You have mastered the art of shooting videos of birds with branches and twigs in front of them among other obstructing objects.
Oh Lordy I’m cracking up at the slo mo bird death jump
i think the grainy squirrel photo was pretty
Hell no.
not to be a stickler - but 1. fujis best lens for XF is the 200 f2, and 2: fuji’s best lenses are the XK lenses and the medium format GF lenses
going to shoot some 100mb hand held images with GH6 and the leica 100-400mm lens next week...thank you for sharing...i suck at my job too.
The Fuji 150-600 will be too heavy and will probably cost $2599 but I will buy it.
Thank you for introducing me to bird death jumps.
Great that you've started identifying the birds! Regarding the stabilization, I reckon you'll eventually crack and start lugging a tripod around.
1. I hope you saved that buzzer sound. Perfect to use during the '10 questions of knowledge given" videos when someone does not tell you what they are going to use the camera for
2. The bird committing suicide could be the new Tommen Game of Thrones GIF. If you don't do it, I'm stealing it. Credit of course to you.
"you have buyers remorse already, I can smell it" 😂
My camera doesn't have threads for lenses. Could I superglue that big lens on it? Thanks.
I love your sense of humor!
i did buy a shirt. two actually. you're welcome
Dude you are reading my mind on what I'm contemplating right now and am hoping I can trust your takes. Cause looks like I'm gonna follow your takes. LOL
Your buzzer is quite a disturbing one, I like where these clips are heading to though, more scenes like this pls
I have to say, some of this footage is nice. You should do nicely graded compilation of you wild life stuff ...
Curious how things go after 1:30.. I can’t stop rewinding over and over. 🤣
You should totally jump into pentax with the k3iii and compare the 55-300 PLM vs 150-450 because reasons
Stunning shots
Why does your buzzer sounds like a nuclear attack warning ?
Kasey great video, the hawk ripping up a shrew is cleansing for my soul.
Question - Canon RP + cheapo new RF 100-400 f5.6-8000… any chance that would give good results for wildlife pics & videos?
The squirrel was eating a fully GMO cracker and a few minutes later was eaten by the hawk…and so began the apocalypse of our flat earth home!
Oops, should've watched a little longer before commenting. The hawk spit out the GMO-filled squirrel! Humanity is saved…except for Putin and his evil empire ready to unleash catastrophic consequences on weak western leaders like Brandon and Justin Castreau.
You need to make this video again after using the 150-600 for a few months.
Some great vids there makes me wonder whether you get these Racoons and Hawks in downtown Tronto or are you heading deep into the back-country? In the UK all the wildlife apart from pigeons have long since fled the cities.
In the city, no city is empty of wildlife.
@@cameraconspiracies Well sort of, but most things left in London like deer and foxes are semi-domesticated these days. And you definitely don't get owls out in daylight. Wish we had racoons. You're really lucky.
My personal review after using a Fuji X-T20, X-T4, X-T5 and the 100X400 lens after only 2 years...
BUY EXTENDED WARRANTIES *for each product.*

on Pana you can just adjust HOW MUCH THROUGH you want!
120°, 180, 360 or whatever.
Put that on a custom button and ... now we are talking.
Yea it's nice. Doesn't work with the teleconverter unfortunately.
"I'll be alone forever" golden!
WOWWW. tks for u review
As a Carolinian I'm crushed! I literally said to myself, do they call it a Carolina Wren in Canada? 🤣 Nope, they call it a California wren.
Do you think the 50-230 lens is too wide for your way of filming wildlife?
Just add a TC 1.4x to the 70-300mm, or get an X-T5 or X-H2 and then use the digital zoom.
Here's a radical thought. Maybe you have to have different lenses for different occasions?
Sold my 100-400mm and bought the 70-300mm to pair with the 1.4x multiplier.
so these reflex lenses are 1/2 as long so shake is minimized. the problem is they are all f8.
Back button AF FTW!
And the 45mm T2.8
The Olympus 60mm is Super sharp, might be the sharpest lens in the system.
I have the 90mm macro for Sony ua-cam.com/video/4cCEAwVO7Jw/v-deo.html
So you are the one who scooped the 70-300. I was eyeing that on Kijiji lol.
Love it.
11:16 so many times feeling me like an idiot with the same situation
4:04 If you play it back at regular speed you can hear a mouse scream "I spit in your general direction".
Have you tried putting HD 240fps through the Topaz ai upscaler? Upscale to 4k. Will blow your mind!
Isn‘t this just for photo-Processing?🤔
@@HigherJr No there is a version just for video called Topaz Video Enhance AI. The upscaling AI is superb but you need a mac M1 or equivalent if you don't want to wait days to render. I just upscaled 2.7k dji mav mini footage to 4k and it looks no different to a mav air in native 4k. Upscaling fuji 240fps to 4k is also superb. A little expensive for the software but for pro work it's a game changer.
@@GregAnthonyHarris cool, thanks!
I am pretty sure Final Cut Pro compressor does the same thing with upscaling if you export from 1080p to 4K. I suspect that DaVinci resolve does the same? The videos posted here were pretty impressive to my eye of the 240fps footage.
Some great cinematic moments!
Great review. More confusion as to what to buy. Big expensive lug that takes care of you or Little pal that helps? Oy
I want to film bird footage in hd 240 fps, cannot edit 4k on current pc. Also HD looks magical, so what would be better X-S10 or X-T4 with either 70-300 or 100 400?
actually, compositionally speaking, i liked the Fuji raccoon shot. It felt more, ‘I am watching you. You cannot see. But you know. ‘ Just saying.
man, this is comedy. love ur videos
Now we demand 100-400 vs 200-600mm
with the a1, super35 crop, clear image zoom. that's what we demand even more
I use the 70-300mm with the XF 2X TC-only stills, never video-because I was often dissatisfied with the 100-400mm reach of my old Canon APS-C system. f/11 wide open is not too much of a problem due to the local minimum in sensor noise at ISO 800, and 5-stop IBIS in my X-S10. Maybe a more realistic approach would be to just shoot the 70-300 and accept more crop in post while I re-gain skills.
what about 1.4x tc
I like your honesty and attitude.
But:
1) who is shooting this much video and for whom?
2) who is WATCHING all their videos?
It's like the old days being stuck watching someone's vacation movies or slideshows.
I'll stick to still photo and not pretend to be a "Spielberg".
Have you tried the Sigma 150 to 600 mm for the Sony?
you got it
Just so you know, this video started off a massive argument between myself and my father - who knew cameras could be cause family members to fall out :D So I have an X-T4 with the 70-300mm and he has a Sony AX700 Camcorder.
Such a fresh approach, love it 😁 You most certainly do not suck at your job, but you know that already. And there's no way your single, I'm not taking that one 😉
