The whole purpose of the REM ACOG is to eliminate the need to keep buying chemlights. The unit is there when you need it. It has 11 brightness settings. The lowest setting is for night use and you can keep adjusting it up as the sun comes up. It also helps reduce the reticle bloom in bright daylight.

@@Chris-ct8if the TA31 is the main model issued to DOD. Also if you have one, the tritium is supposed to last roughly 10 years. So you have a while before it becomes an issue and you can do some small tricks to mitigate the issues. Also the TA02 is heavier which lessens the justification for it over an elcan imo

You are easily one of the best guntubers. Zero larp and tons of legitimately helpful information. It is very clear that you have a breadth of experience as an armorer or gunsmith or something like that because clearly you actually bothered to read the user manual on all these acogs.
I'd love to see more optics reviews from you because you give tons of information about reticles and how to properly use the optic rather than just "wowee this glass looks good". That kind of review is nice to have but what you do is far more valuable information. I'm looking forward to the Elcan video even though I'm not sure I'd ever get one. @@WQuantrill So far I like it much better than the heavy 1-6x Vudu I had. It's lighter and has enough magnification for accurate hits to point targets out to 4-500m. The eye relief isn't great, but it isn't really worth complaining about, either. Using the BAC method for closer targets takes some getting used to with a 4x optic, but it's very doable.

There's a lot of situations where thermals don't work well. When you're looking at a hot background things tend to bleed together You also can't see through glass with thermals and not being able to see color uniforms would be a huge disadvantage on the battlefield for target identification and friendly fire prevention. Of course that’s the goal. I have found like skateboarding, some people are regular foot, goofy foot, both right handed. Likewise two right handed people could have a right or left eye dominance , or be left handed with the same options so Bindon aiming doesn’t work so hot for everyone. I have. A few friends it works great for and some like myself not so much. The brightness I think will definitely help those with the optimal eye dominance that meshes well with the BAC

In answer to your inquiry regarding pulling off the illumination dial:
I have never had a battey-powered ACOG, however, I have a VCOG with an illumination dial which, to my eye at least, appears to be the exact same design. The dial has never come clear off the rest of the scope, but after about two years of very light use the detents became increasingly indistinct, and the illumination would decide to turn on or off at random points in between but not corresponding to said, mushy detents.
I sent the scope to Trijicon and they returned it to me with the illumination dial feeling better than new.

I love my TA31, but the ability to run the dot forward AND use an enclosed red dot has me constantly price checking the TA02. Living in Alaska the open emitter gets fucked up by snow a lot and clearing said snow sometimes leads to melted snow that then freezes near the emitter.
