You can call them simply the best Chicano rock band ever. I call them the most underrated American R&R band. I call them the Best band from East Los Angeles. Great R&R, traditional Mexican cumbia, norteña, corridos, and even an album of Walt Disney children's songs. Also the best American garage band. They do it all with class and integrity. Yeah, too bad they hardly show Hidalgo's riffs or the solo. They show the audience, Cesar, the drummer... All while David is playing the solo. Who edits these vids??
The song itself is brilliant in it's simplicity, the stories of one time, one night, in America... Not all happy, but there's always the wise man, and the quiet voice singing that gives hope... And the guitar work is so cascading and shimmering... I want a Telecaster!

It was 1977 and they were just a garage band. They came to play at OCC in Costa Mesa CA. We would bring in live music to play in the quad at the college. Los Lobos Del Este De Los Angeles with their roots in Mexican music and a unique spin on al the covers they played. I would see them several times a year after that at UCI, UC riverside. Little did we know that we were listening to one of the most amazing local bands of all time. In 1980 I was a student at USC with Cesar Rosas. We hung out at the Centro Chicano on campus. He was going to teach me how to play the guitar. He was left handed I was right handed it wasn’t going to work out. For graduation, they played for the Hispanic students and their families. Still a local band, our parents loved them. I moved on to the corporate world. Los lobos began to tour. I moved to New York and the hit Will the Wolf Survive came out. I connected with that song and loved my connection to them. As the years went by they got bigger and bigger. The rest was history, Theirs, mine, ours. One time one night In America.
This makes me think of Ritchie Valens and if he was still alive he would have written something like this. Los Lobos did the music on La Bamba but I always think of Ritchie when listening to David Hidalgo. Takes me right back to my childhood.
The show is from the Munich, german Monday live tv show "Live aus dem Alabama" Broadcasted from an old hall at a former WWII and later U.S. Army military base, the Alabamahall in the Schleissheimerstrasse of Munich. I worked this show ..and 300 others as part of the tv editorial team. Great time.........great band.
I ve loved this song for 30 years. Probably the first time I ever saw a video of them performing, the reason being Dennis Hopper ' Usage of this song, ibe of the best editing, that montage is so powerful, the photography beautiful,
Los Lobos at the San Diego State Outdoor Amphitheater is still one of my all time favorite concerts....and I've been to a LOT of concerts! Such a fantastic band.
I live haunted by this tune , sick vocal unforgettable riff . strong message one of my favorite tunes ever and my others are rooted deep in bluegrass and folk
I am 64 and the wife is 55. Wife is Katy Perry gal, I am all about Los Lobos, Grateful Dead and The Band. Together we have seen Los Lobos three times and in January it will be four times. When disco gal gets it, you know it is special.
God i live that smoothe voice. This song brings tears to my eyes every time i hear it. I still find it hard to believe the Los Lonely Boys didnt mention los lobos as inspiration when creating their sound. For the love of God they sound just like them. When i heard heaven i thought it was los lobos for 6 months. But ive gotta say los lobos created that sound. Give it a name if you must but id never heard anyone with that sound before los lobos. I heard them years before they had a record deal. My dad sat in with them playing bass when i was 10 maybe younger. Its was great. When he was done and we were leaving he assured them they were going to be huge and take the world by storm. Im 52 now. Good times

This concert was played right after I graduated college in 12/86 in America--seems like a thousand years ago. We were all so young, and bright and shiny! Damn, they sounded fine that night!
No Matter who sings the song or from what Gener or who wrote it, As Long as It comes from the Heart then It has Meaning and It comes Alive, An Inspiration from the Heart, That Evoks the Very Essence of the Heart. And it takes Us Back to that Age when We Were Innocent, full of Hope And Love. Forever Los Lobos will Rock to the New Generations and More.
OMG you guys I know its been so long ago this song blew my mind back in the 80's I dont know if you remember but you great guys played the 8 by 10 in south Baltimore in Baltimore Maryland you guys are still in my heart you were fantastic never forget it....don't know if you remember I'm 53 yrs old now so you all had at least 10 yrs on me...lol
I saw these guys about a year before this in Boston, MA. in a smallish club called The Channel, maybe 400-500 people were there. They did almost all the songs from their first couple of records. I cannot recall if they did this one. Doesn't matter. They were great. Very guitar-oriented. Both dudes can play the heck out of the guitar, but the big dude David Hildago, Hidalgo (?) is something special. If you watch him closely in this clip, you can see that his guitar is tuned to an open chord, rather than the standard E,A,D,G,B,E tuning used by 99% of rock guitarists. He's tuned the guitar to open A or open G and worked out all of the song's guitar lines on his own without relying on the usual patterns. Very impressive because of how melodic his leads are, at least to my ears. Los Lobos is a very tight, professional unit with each member extremely proficient at his instrument. This goes for the saxophone player as well. They deserve a lot more recognition than they have. And they really ought to be members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's a sham(e) that the band is not.
Está música marcou minha vida, minha adolescência, minha história, fato sentir que me remete a outras vidas... saudades de mim... realmente a música 🎶 🎶 que toca meu coração
great song .I like the drummer because he looks like he doesn't trust anybody.stone cold. flawless .gets the job done.awesome.that's how I get with my work too.

WOW ! This is a great video. Many thanks for uploading. One of my favorite bands. Saw them on Austin City Limits and David looked like he was playing with his eyes closed...awesome guitar player, in fact, awesome band...not like the crap some are playing now-a-days. Tom in Lil' Rhode Island
Interesting fact for anybody who doesn't know, this song was played in the beginning credits of the movie COLORS (1987) starring Robert Duvall, Sean Penn, and Trinidad Silva.
Saw Colors while stationed in Germany in 1988. A year later I graduate from the LA County Sheriff Academy and would play this every day on my way to the Men's Central Jail.
@@mdmejia67 That's cool bro.Thanx for the reply. You probably knew my brother.Anyhow be safe.I say thank you for service.I was 8 years old when Colors came out
The R&R HoF is a joke if they leave them out. Lobos can switch from one style of music to the next easier than turning a knob. Rock, son Jarocho, country, conjunto, pop, oldies...there isn't another band like it.
Today at the ripe old age if 25, I have stumbled upon Los Lobos. I am forever and eternally grateful for them. New fan!
So Happy for you. Explore them.....
Trip on "The Fabulous Thunderbirds"
Enjoy 😉
Never too late to discover great music.
Well, I know you are a person with great taste in music.
I’m the ripe young age of 60 years old, and I still listen to Los Lobos every chance I get, was lucky enough to see them perform back in 1986’ Lord it’s hard to believe it’s been nearly 40 years since those good ole days of yester year.
They should be in the R & R hall of fame.
I second that.
What does it really matter anyways?
You can call them simply the best Chicano rock band ever. I call them the most underrated American R&R band. I call them the Best band from East Los Angeles. Great R&R, traditional Mexican cumbia, norteña, corridos, and even an album of Walt Disney children's songs. Also the best American garage band. They do it all with class and integrity. i completely agree
i describe them
as lennon and mccartney and harrison and starkey
los
escarabajo de norte america
o de ustados unidos
if i got the translation right
regardless i can count on them to blow my mind and then soothe it
then challenge it and cool it
i met them once
before i was blown away
or even learned there names
miami beach circa 1990
they refused to come into the stephen talkhouse
without due respect
i wanted to hear them
i went down to the walgreens to buy them the candy
that their contract demanded
and the talkhouse refused to get
easy negotiation
respect is
plus they wanted to play and prove their worth
as if they had to
i wanted to experience them first hand
as if i had to
talkhouse relented
as if they had to
so glad i wanted what i wanted enough
to not disrespect or hurt anyone else
thank you los lobos for being you then and now
got lost in finding someone who gets and articulates the hard work and genius, as in genuine, of los lobos
what i wanted to contribute was i felt the need to hear van morrisons washing windows
then all of a sudden i heard one time one night
so i played them both back and forth
for me
oh my oh
oh my me oh
thanks hank
You can definitely see where Los Lonely Boys gets a lot of their inspiration from. I would rank them as a very good Chicano band as well.
I put Los Lobos up there with any of the groups that are often cited as great American rock bands: Beach Boys, Byrds, Allman Brothers Band, Grateful Dead, etc. Los Lobos is right there with them. Decades of really great material.
What I like about them is you cold let your kids listen to this without a problem
One of the prettiest guitar licks in all of rock and roll!

Yeah, too bad they hardly show Hidalgo's riffs or the solo. They show the audience, Cesar, the drummer... All while David is playing the solo. Who edits these vids??
I saw them live back in 2010 and most impressive part of the concert was David intro in this song. Will never forget!!!

Haunted ?
Haunted, yes. The lyrics express a level of disillusionment and disappointment that I find haunting.
this beautiful song always makes me cry. I can hear a Don Rich influence in the guitar . Dave is one the best vocalists ever
his voice is golden. as is his guitar playing. underrated genius.
@@anarchylane He's like the Latino Vince Gill. All the respect in the world.
There's also a trace of CCR in Cesar's playing as well.
Don Rich! Was wondering why it was so familiar. Definitely Don Rich. This is a twangy masterpiece

I saw Los Lobos last night in Lowell, MA. They opened with this. Great song by a legendary band.

I saw them play in a bar in Minneapolis and they did Cinnamon girl for an encore. It was a few years ago.

I used to live in Lowell. Glad to be out of Mass. FOREVER ! That state sucks ! Great music in Boston though. Saw these guys there twice 👍.
Loved this song from the first time I heard it. Not much later I found the album at a yard sale for a dollar. I will keep it for ever!

Saw them in Detroit in 89. Yep best concert ever! They make it look so simple, but wow what musical talent!

Classic band, Los Lobos!! Awesome!!!
Saw these guys at Summer Fest in Milwaukee back in the 80s. 10,000 of us dancing on the picnic tables. Great night.

Lyrics
A wise man was telling stories to me
About the places he had been to and the things that he had seen
A quiet voice is singing something to me
An age old song 'bout the home of the brave in this land here of the free
One time one night in America
A lady dressed in white with the man she loves
Standing along the side of their pick up truck
A shot rang out in the night
Just when everything seemed right
Another headline written down in America
The guy that lived next door in three o five
Took the kids to the park and disappeared 'bout half past nine
Who will ever know how much she loved them so
That dark night alone in America
A quiet voice is singing something to me
An age old song 'bout the brave in this land here of the free
One time one night in America
Four small boys playing ball in the parking lot
A preacher, a teacher, and the other became a cop
A car skidded into the rain
Making the last little one a saint
One more light goes out in America
A young girl tosses a coin in the wishing well
She hopes for a heaven while for her there's just this hell
She gave away her life to become somebody's wife
Another wish unanswered in America
People having so much faith
Die too soon while all the rest come late
We write a song that no one sings
On a cold black stone where a lasting peace will finally bring
The sunlight plays upon my window pane
I wake up to a world that's still the same
My father said to be strong
That a good man could never do wrong
In a dream I had last night in America
A wise man was telling stories to me
About the places he had been to and the things that he had seen
A quiet voice is singing something to me
An age old song 'bout the home of the brave in this land here of the free
One time one night in America
One time one night in America
One time one night in America
