I think JCT was the choice winner in this competition. To have a french touch to it, it completely looked southern and so did the sides to match not to even mention the flaky southern style biscuit. Yum....Yum😋
I am very happy to see this review of Mary Mac's Tea Room. I grew up in Georgia, lived in Atlanta for 15 years and actually worked at Mary Mac's in the early 80's. The best part of working there was getting a meat and three at a discount each shift. I still recall the first time I ate there, several years before I would wind up with a part-time job there. On a vacation to Atlanta last year, I made sure to take my partner, my brother and my nephew there for lunch. It was truly the best meal of the trip for me. There were two women that were still there from when I had worked there way back then. Thank you again for reviewing Mary Mac's and choosing them as one of your winners. I will try to check out Busy B and JCT the next time I visit, though. I will just HAVE to find - or cook - some fried chicken real soon!
Exactly I’ve gone to Mary Macs, since the 1980s. The nouveau everybody decorate with barn wood & tiny house accessories -we are a new restaurant-cannot hold a candle to it!
Takeaways? 1) These two play off each other extremely well. 2) Gus’ Fried Chicken would save their lives. 3) It’s time to bring Alana back on a full time basis. She is HILARIOUS. This show can be done in a trio format no problem.
Mary Mac's, because of the crunch of the skin, the deliciousness of the collard greens (that could convert a non greens eater, to becoming one), and the mac and cheese was really good. That crunch of the coating was Amazing!
Realistically you can make a crunchy juicy chicken using a flour cornstarch mix and a salt brine. But for consistency and flavor it’s all about seasoning a consistentcy
My problem with Korean chicken is that its very flavorful on the outside but not so much seasoning on the inside. The outside flavor don't penetrate the meat.
I know that a lot of people on here are a little dismayed by the cost of $23 for a 2 piece chicken plate, but it is about the experience and expertise that goes into each dish. This is the reason that this is one of the top places in Atlanta to eat soul food. I do not know anyone from Atlanta and loves fried chicken that would even mention KFC in the same sentence with any of these places. Fast food places like KFC while good at times, offer mass production products. The food at these places are fresh and are top notch and deserve a try if you visit the area.
Thailand’s version of fried chicken: crispy af skin from brined chicken meat, the meat itself should have a slightly bland interior but the batter is normally pretty salty, served with glutinous sticky rice, normally eaten with your hands. Oh, and we have sweet chilli sauce or a more spicier sauce depending on your taste. The weirdest bit, is that we generally eat it for breakfast.
jean Why! I love Herrine! She describes food so well compared to a few others. Alana and Herrine make a good team, more chill less tense vibes compared to the Herrine and Erin team.
Mary Mac’s looked righteous to me. Just because you soak a bird in buttermilk and season her dusting, doesn’t make for a classic crunch and yum to go with it! The seasonings simplicity of Mary Mac’s dusted cluck, the salted brine, along with the high smoke point of the Canola Oil I am sure is responsible for that crunch. Sometimes a heavy crust can weigh down the meal. And the candied yams topped with melted marshmallow looked divine! Go Mary Mac’s!
1: Gus' Fried Chicken (Front st) the crispiest and juciest I've ever had in my life 2: 99 cent Soul Food Express (by Civil Right Museum) don't let the name fool you. I’m sorry. Busy Bees and Mary Mac’s definitely has the handle on traditional Southern fried chicken. Fried chicken there feels like going to grandmas house for Sunday dinner. JCT is just good “restaurant” chicken that is fried.
We ate here based on this video. Not all I expected but I’d go because of the server. She was so nice and kept saying my family looked nice and my daughter loved her. Now the bread was everything. If she happens to read this, we were the family in the yellow ❤️

J.C.T. got the win for me too. The hammock stock for the kale and the way the chicken was seasoned got my vote. Mary Mack only gave two pieces of chicken which is not enough for $23.00

Busy Bee is a popular soul food spot and is always crowded. Very good food there! Mary Mac's Tea Room is cool and quaint. Food was just so so several years ago when I dined there. They probably have different cooks by now. Not Canola oil! Never been but the Biscuits looks delicious at JCT and I like the concept of Kale rather than the collards greens. I'm southern born and bred in Ga and collards is what we do. But I do prefer the tender texture of Kale over collards any day. Bougie little southern girl. That's me!
