    When I was a kid in the early 90s, I would cry about how I could never watch gymnastics. I dreamt of the day when I could watch gymnastics all day long. It seemed impossible at that time, like dreaming of flying with a magical cape or something. I cannot describe HOW HAPPY it makes me, even 30 years later, to be able to ACTUALLY watch all of these old gymnastics meets whenever I want -- that dream of watching gymnastics all day has come true!!

      I feel the same way, but I was always shortchanged cause I had to work. We had a tv in the office and my boss and his wife would watch some of it, but we didn't dare watch. I rushed home when they interrupted coverage to carry the news!!

I don’t think youll get another gymnast quite like her, one who is able to not only last this long but to continue to improve as well. She certainly has changed the entire womens gymnastics as we know it.

    How did they even justify those vault results with a straight face??? Even if Chuso wasn't a legend...if she never did anything else except her VTs in 1992, she deserves to have this world title and probably the Olympic one. It's fucking startling how good these vaults were.

      @TheAnonymousIsAnonymous1234weight in particular was a huge concern for women’s gymnastics at that time. Athletes would be cruelly criticized for not fitting into a very specific body image mold of slender and “balletic” appearing unfortunately. Look up the story of Christy Heinrich for a harrowing example. Their weight in particular should have been no one’s business at all.

      I was 12 years old on my summer vacation and fell in love with these girls all of them actually. Szmeskal was my favorite though. I had never watched gymnastics before and after watching this I was hooked. Every day before baseball practice or games I was on the couch in the air-conditioning watching this. That one girl that won all the gold though she, Gutsu , was unbelievable. Every time she did something I was like, dammit that was better. I felt so patriotic and proud watching these girls and the fact that they were only a couple years older than me and in some cases the same age as me was mind boggling.

    It seems so crazy in 2021 to think that they used to put the gymnasts height and weight on there. Like, what did it ever matter in regards to their ability or them as a person? And 70 pounds..that should have been looked at as an issue. I know 8 year olds that are 70 pounds..

    • @saragrant9749
      @saragrant9749 День тому

      Unfortunately weight was a huge area of scrutiny back then. Gymnasts were expected to be extremely slim and small, not an ounce of extra weight to be seen. It led to a number of eating disorders sadly- just look at Christy Heinrich who eventually died from complications of eating disorders- after a JUDGE told her to lose weight! Nowadays gymnasts are encouraged to be strong and healthy, not skinny as possible.

    If you go back and find some of ABC's coverage of gymnastics championships from the 80's, you'd see Al Michaels covering this. But here he's not. Wouldnt have had much conflict considering its April (unless he was covering a pre triple crown horse race around this very time). I wonder if he himself declined "lower rated" assignments like these by the 90s? Or if he didnt want to travel to Europe?

      The difference in age was basically just a smoke screen to pretend like they were doing something. 13, 16, doesn't matter - they changed those rules in 1997 and it didn't stop kids from being abused. The system, not the age of the gymnast, was always the problem.

    • @JennaLeigh
      @JennaLeigh 5 років тому +6

      At no point ever has the choreo been "good".... but nowadays they just wave their hands around. There is little to no artistry in ARTISTIC gymnastics now. Just power tumbling. And not letting them lunge out of their landings for tumbling passes is KILLING these girls' legs. Aly Raisman mentioned it....just how every single girl has her feet, ankles, calves, knees taped to hell and back for FX because of the pounding those landings are putting on them. All for a CoP that benefits overloading on difficulty while making execution and form seemingly secondary. Insane.
