When I was a kid in the early 90s, I would cry about how I could never watch gymnastics. I dreamt of the day when I could watch gymnastics all day long. It seemed impossible at that time, like dreaming of flying with a magical cape or something. I cannot describe HOW HAPPY it makes me, even 30 years later, to be able to ACTUALLY watch all of these old gymnastics meets whenever I want -- that dream of watching gymnastics all day has come true!!
I feel the same way, but I was always shortchanged cause I had to work. We had a tv in the office and my boss and his wife would watch some of it, but we didn't dare watch. I rushed home when they interrupted coverage to carry the news!!
Same here . Before UA-cam I got an old meet on Cd through eBay lol 😂.
I seriously watch gymnastics everyday. It's so relaxing to watch and such a beautiful sport. If I let UA-cam play it will play nothing but old 90s competitions that I've watched 100 times
AMAZING that Oksana Chusovitina is STILL COMPETING!🤯
And on the same level of girls half her age!
Aww, baby Oksana Chusovitina!
Little did they know chusovitina would still be competing in 2017
2019 checking in! She's unreal.
2020 and I do believe she is qualified for a specialist spot in Tokyo!
She is amazing now competing against girls old enough to be her children
@@JanetMarieRose73 Almost grandchildren lol!
2021 and shes still here...what an amazing woman. It’s so great that she has enabled other gymnasts to now stay on longer too. I don’t think youll get another gymnast quite like her, one who is able to not only last this long but to continue to improve as well. She certainly has changed the entire womens gymnastics as we know it.
How did they even justify those vault results with a straight face??? Even if Chuso wasn't a legend...if she never did anything else except her VTs in 1992, she deserves to have this world title and probably the Olympic one. It's fucking startling how good these vaults were.
She has a few vault medals including silver in ... 2008... in her 30s!!
She won World's on this event in 2022
Kinda amazing those vaults of Chusovitina were only good enough for bronze.
Okay he said hello everybody and happy easter and I'm watching this today on an Easter Sunday
I didn't realize this as a kid but having the weight and height of every athlete was so cruel. I am so glad they stopped doing it
@TheAnonymousIsAnonymous1234weight in particular was a huge concern for women’s gymnastics at that time. Athletes would be cruelly criticized for not fitting into a very specific body image mold of slender and “balletic” appearing unfortunately. Look up the story of Christy Heinrich for a harrowing example. Their weight in particular should have been no one’s business at all.
I am PISSED! Both of Chusovitina's vaults should have been 10.00. They were both freaking perfect, especially for this era.
Victor Beauregarde Agreed-Chusovitina by far had the best performance.
101% PERFECTION! What deductions did those judges see that we didn’t?!😤
@@Myricle12 In the early 90s, women were deducted for going through puberty and for not being cutesy. Oksana is not traditionally beautiful or cutesy, so she was deducted .Facts.
And to think she would win Olympic silver in 2008... competing against those nearly half her age!
At the very least, they should have won her first place.
I cannot believe chuso didn't get a 10. I've never seen a better tsuk full.
I love Onodi, but Chuso had the best performance here.
I'd forgotten just how good Kim Zmeskal was. That BB routine was ABSOLUTELY lights out.
I LOVE Kim, she was really the first gymnast that got me into loving gymnastics because I grew up watching her 💚
She's always been one of my favorites ever. Look up her 1992 olympic trials FX. it is out of this world. Had she done that opening tumbling pass at the Olympics she could have won gold. The power and speed is unmatched to this day. Check it out and report back lol
I was 12 years old on my summer vacation and fell in love with these girls all of them actually. Szmeskal was my favorite though. I had never watched gymnastics before and after watching this I was hooked. Every day before baseball practice or games I was on the couch in the air-conditioning watching this. That one girl that won all the gold though she, Gutsu , was unbelievable. Every time she did something I was like, dammit that was better. I felt so patriotic and proud watching these girls and the fact that they were only a couple years older than me and in some cases the same age as me was mind boggling.
@@rcarnegie78 She was overtrained for the Olympics so was largely a shadow of her old self. It was ridiculous by the Karolyis and so typical.
@@richardross4677 Indeed. A healthy Kim in Barcelona could have been in the hunt of several medals. She was awesome in vault, beam and floor.
I do not miss the whole height and weight flashed for each gymnast. It always seemed so demeaning.
I totally agree
Little Jennie Thompson in the Bela fluff piece!! So tiny and adorable! She was one of my favorite gymnasts in the 90’s❤️
I remember before the Barcelona Games, Zmeskal described Onodi as her 'favorite foreign gymnast.'
Really enjoyed the commentary, especially Bart Conner's featurettes- the helmet cam was so cool
CHUSO WON VAULT POINT BLANK THE END
21:02 Oksana Chutsovitina age 16! So COOL 😎 to see her in 1992 Worlds.
It seems so crazy in 2021 to think that they used to put the gymnasts height and weight on there. Like, what did it ever matter in regards to their ability or them as a person? And 70 pounds..that should have been looked at as an issue. I know 8 year olds that are 70 pounds..
Unfortunately weight was a huge area of scrutiny back then. Gymnasts were expected to be extremely slim and small, not an ounce of extra weight to be seen. It led to a number of eating disorders sadly- just look at Christy Heinrich who eventually died from complications of eating disorders- after a JUDGE told her to lose weight! Nowadays gymnasts are encouraged to be strong and healthy, not skinny as possible.
Chusovitina is STILL HERE
Nearly 30 years later !
More full length Gymnastics events please..............
Great to see this. Thanks for posting.
57:18 is so interesting!!
Kerri strug was such an underrated gymnast, maybe if she had more opportunities she probably to have won a medal
Maria Neculita won two medals and they never showed her :(
who
Shout out to the pommel horse competitors! That event is AMAZING!!!
Onodi so gorgeous.
Loved Onodi
Milosovici has been olympic and/or world champion on all four events
Yep, mostly by reputation alone.
CHUSO WAS ROBBED
I'm trying to find the deductions on Oksana's vaults.
Country of origin was the main deduction.
Oh thank goodness I know the pertinent information that Kerri weighed 72 lbs! Necessary knowledge, early 1990's broadcasts!
That's how you know the ladies are telling the truth about being restricted food at the Karolyi ranch.
25:44 is the of shit that give me life and that I miss in this sport! Drama! Gagging!
Ok Saha did really good.
Even here Strug was landing short on her vault... surprised she didnt tweak her ankle til the Olympics.
Anyone know why Onodi ditched the West Side Story routine for the 1992 Olympics?
She wanted a more mature routine for the Olympic Games.
Victor Beauregarde unfortunate, right? It was a really great routine!
I could've sworn that guy from Korea's name was a joke, or, atleast that's what I thought at first. "You Ok Youl".
And she might still compete in the upcoming Olympics!!!
If you didn't have two vaults valued at a 10, then you shouldn't have been in the ladies vault final.
If you go back and find some of ABC's coverage of gymnastics championships from the 80's, you'd see Al Michaels covering this. But here he's not. Wouldnt have had much conflict considering its April (unless he was covering a pre triple crown horse race around this very time). I wonder if he himself declined "lower rated" assignments like these by the 90s? Or if he didnt want to travel to Europe?
Baby Jennie Thompson is too cute and Onodi getting two 9.5's with steps on her vault should get these judges fired for cheating
Onodi didn't get 9.5s, did you mean 9.95s?
I want to see Jenni. Do you know what part she's in?
Agreed, she was not the best vaulter
Jennie was great but started as elite way too young. That’s why she had crazy injuries most of her career
LYSENKO. That’s it. That’s the comment.
why the hell did they show weight wtf
It was a big focus back then. Many a gymnast had an eating disorder as a result of being forced to be as slim and trim as possible. Christy Heinrich was actually told by a JUDGE to lose weight… and ultimately died from complications of an eating disorder a few years later.
Is Bart still 140 lbs?
Oksana was robbed. She stuck both her vaults when henrietta and svetlana took hops
40:59 this is so 1992
HOW did Oksana not win I beg
Onodi's only weakness on floor was her relative lack of flexibility. Never made 180 in her split leaps. Should have won floor but certainly not vault.
KIMMMMMMM
Glad they changed the ages to compete at worlds seniors to 16. Kerri was 13 what the heck! Thats why lotsa young before started gymnast suffer severe long term damages to there body in the long run and are sometimes taken advantage sexually.
The difference in age was basically just a smoke screen to pretend like they were doing something. 13, 16, doesn't matter - they changed those rules in 1997 and it didn't stop kids from being abused. The system, not the age of the gymnast, was always the problem.
She was 14 at those Worlds. Turning 15 that same year.
I always hated when the female gymnast back then how there. Floor exercise dance was all cutesy utsey hand wavey stand bend ur back skip heel to heel. Dance type moves ehhh good tumbling but horrible choreography
Time Machine Needed Haha you've summed it up nicely. And I thought I was the only one that hated Yankee choreography. Zmeskal's was pretty lame too, butt wiggling to cheesy music. Most overrated of the era.
At no point ever has the choreo been "good".... but nowadays they just wave their hands around. There is little to no artistry in ARTISTIC gymnastics now. Just power tumbling. And not letting them lunge out of their landings for tumbling passes is KILLING these girls' legs. Aly Raisman mentioned it....just how every single girl has her feet, ankles, calves, knees taped to hell and back for FX because of the pounding those landings are putting on them. All for a CoP that benefits overloading on difficulty while making execution and form seemingly secondary. Insane.
Jenna Leigh's Beauty Slam The lack of a lunge is ridiculous. I keep hoping they’ll bring it back in a future CoP.
Have you seen Shannon Miller's floor 1992-1994? She was different...
lol what are you talking about it's even worse now in 2020
