God, Dominique's floor choreography was SO superior to that crap she was serving up with the Karolyis, SO much better, so much more elegant, graceful, none of that cutesy kiddie crap. She was an *incredible* gymnast ca. 1997-1999 and had she not been injured in 2002, almost certainly would've medaled in the AA. Luminita was a fantastic coach.
I so loved Moceanu's gymnastics after '96. It's a shame she had so many outside issues pulling her apart. She was so awesome to watch after '96.There was an elegance to her performances and her form was beautiful when she hit. Atler, bless her heart, was a train wreck. Although I did notice she finished top 6 at the Olympic trials but they took Dawes instead. So much for Colorassi saying it was results only. I know why they did it just find it amusing.
Moceanu and Atler were both so amazing at this time. It's interesting that people picked up even then how unhappy Dominique looked though. It was soon after this that she divorced her parents.
+Christina Gmiterko Maybe her parents were awful but I doubt they were that much more awful than most other parents of world-class gymnasts. She seems to have just been a selfish headcase with a bad attitude.
+College Gym Archive I suggest you watch this video. Dominique had a sister she never knew existed. Her father forced her mother to give her sister up for adoption the moment she was born, because she was born with no legs. Her mother never even held her. www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/11/dominique-mocea-secret-sister-jennifer-bricker_n_1586987.html
The powers that be, at the time, decided that having a Eruos in 1998 was enough for international competitions. After the North Americans and Asians started to grumble about this, they started to have a Worlds every year but not a full one during the one year in the Olympic cycle and no Worlds during the same year as the Summer Olympics.
Not with countries such as Ukraine, Russia, and China... Ukraine, and Russia had very strong teams and USA with only Moceanu and Atler they would probably get 5th or 6th
What sucks for Vanessa is she could do the Nadia but when she was going thru mentally she couldn't. Her coaches should have taken it out. Read your athlete and adjust
I love when they say- and Vanessa Atler, still in the picture- when she’s sitting behind Maloney but then she moves her head. I’m sure the producer was like, no! Keep your face in the frame!!
Kelly not making the 92 Olympics team cuz of petitioning..who they blaming Miller. The one who actually won silver in AA, should've been gold and the one who won the most medals. They blaming Miller for Kelly not making the team. Really...please.
I’m so glad that NBC has ended their gross and exploitative style of coverage of gymnastics of the 90s and that coaches are no longer putting up a performance for the cameras.
So.....what happened with Maloney? She seemed poised to dominate here......but I don't really recall hearing her name much. She went to Sydney, but i wasn't super into WAG at that time. Did she see a lot of success?
99 Worlds ended up being just about disastrous for the U.S. Maloney and Atler did make some finals but they were struggling with injuries and had to pull out of events. The team did better in Sydney, but there were issues there as well. Maloney didn't do as well in qualifications and only made it to the AA finals. She had an amazingly difficult floor routine, though. I suggest you check it out. Also she went on to have an excellent NCAA career at UCLA (though she again was injury plagued). Great improvement in presentation and dance at UCLA complete with her tough tumbling and vaulting.
I think that’s about the only time I ever saw Vanessa hit that bars set completely like that. It had huge potential… oh what could have been with a better coach
Man I feel bad for Dom M this competition, you can tell she isn't really in the best place mentally, that gymnastics isn't making her that happy at the moment. It's sad
Why tf wasn’t Kim Kelley included on ‘92 Olympic Team!?! Maybe they only wanted one Kim. Hillary Grivich, May she rest, but she kind of came out of nowhere and she was on the team over Kim!?
Yeah, they didn’t take Hilary. They took Okino, Dawes, Miller, Strug, Bruce, and Zmeskal. Okino and another girl were injured (maybe Wendy Bruce?) and didn’t go to trials, but they still got to go to the Olympics.
@@Autumn_Forest_ Michelle Campi and Okino were both put on the team because Belabitch wanted them there and because Okino 'had a name internationally.' The coaches screwed Kelly blue. Then, of course, Campi had damaged herself so badly physically (trying to come back from a huge injury right before Trials) that she couldn't compete in Barcelona, and Okino sucked/competed mediocre watered-down routines there to win ZERO individual medals. LOL!
If you think she was that terrible, you need to look again. She's not a bar specialist so of course she's not gonna be perfect and this is the main event she struggles on. For all the times she's had troubles, she did really great here
I cry every time Vanessa lands her bars dismount!!!!!
Me too!!
Awww, good for Vanessa with that bar routine. She looked so happy and relieved afterwards.
Ray's dismount on bars is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL
Vanessa’s persistence is everything. Fall off multiple times, reface your fears, and ultimately brave your way to a silver. Girl, you did that!
Vanessa Atler was, quite simply, the most charismatic gymnast that quad. Failure only illuminated her mythical status.❤️ What could've been...
Vanessa made me cry.😢 She's a sweetheart and spectacular gymnast.

She was 12 right?
I like Moceanu’s floor so much better than I used to! I like the music and the choreography!

No, she didn't compete at 2000 trials so she didn't finish 6.
They’re clearly referring to Atler

Christina Gmiterko no that was before this, in 97
College Gym Archive read her book
Awww Vanessa did so good on uneven bars. Bless her.
It's too bad there was no Worlds in 1998, the US could have won a whole bunch of medals with Moceanu and Atler in peak form.
why was there no 1998 worlds?
The powers that be, at the time, decided that having a Eruos in 1998 was enough for international competitions. After the North Americans and Asians started to grumble about this, they started to have a Worlds every year but not a full one during the one year in the Olympic cycle and no Worlds during the same year as the Summer Olympics.
Really weird that they decided 1998 had enough intl competition but somehow decided to shoehorn a whole worlds prior to the Atlanta Olympics
@@jorgebonilla2234 AS well as TWO Worlds in 1994! One Individual, one team, but still, TWO! Also, a Worlds in 1992 prior to Barcelona as well.

Her mom said the same thing and that's a huge part of why Vanessa left them
I never liked Maloney's gymnastics. Even when she had no clear errors, it somehow looked sloppy. I think she was overscored often.
@Star Tetrahedron Her feet and legs always were sloppy, I always felt the same way
Yes rough not elegant. but her difficulty was superior to others she just lacked the clean lines
She isn’t easy to watch
I always felt the same. Like her lines are non existent and her body shape makes her movement look sloppy.
Also she has an odd face - no charm or charisma. Maybe that shouldn’t matter, but it does in such a visual sport
I still hold my breath when Vanessa does bars.
If Moceanu didnt flub on bars both nights. She wouldve taken the lead.
I love when they say- and Vanessa Atler, still in the picture- when she’s sitting behind Maloney but then she moves her head. I’m sure the producer was like, no! Keep your face in the frame!!
Kim kelly still bitter about 92! She even brought it up on betty okino’s birthday post in 2022!
Dare I ask?!
I remember something about it but I need details because I don't remember the details at all lol
Kim zemeskal always my fav
Did they mic all the main coaches in this competition?
You would NEVER know from that Routine that Atler ever had problems on bars.

Steve Rybacki needs to be banned from the sport, for being hateful!
Does any one know about the video they are talking about that was deleted?
