I had not realised you did a video on this truck.. Yes it is sad news to hear about the passing of him... I remember getting a vhs tape for Christmas in 1988 with this truck as the main focus of the video.. it's still at my parents in the TV unit ...haha
Yeah, that was truly devastating to hear. That family was such a staple in the motorsports community. It also makes me glad our boy Cleeter decided to not build Mullet into one of these. 🙏
I saw this truck in person. Believe me, as good as this video is, it can not... Hell, NO mere video on some screen, even if you have your computer connected to a 60-inch display and a top-notch 7.1 surround sound system, can even come close to what it looks like, sounds like, and FEELS like in person. When he pumps those afterburners the ground shakes! Those quick booms right before "take off" feels like someone slapping you in the chest! Your freakin' vision vibrates! GAWD! It's so amazing! If you ever get a chance to go see this truck in person, DO IT!! Blow off those dinner reservations. Tell Ma and Pa that you can't go to dinner. Lil' Timmy's recital will have to wait. Anniversary? Whatever! Drop everything and.. JUST FREAKIN' GO! It's fu--ing SHOCKWAVE, MAN! YEEAH!
I was at Andrews Air Force base for an air show and the truck was mere feet away when those afterburners turned on and off and it honestly was like nothing I’ve ever felt before in my life (we had premium seats which is why we were so close)
NATE TUB I was at Maple Grove 50th anniversary when I saw it. I was in the middle of the bleachers and i Still felt shaking. Those afterburners got me too.
Same here. I actually lived near him too in Galena, Kansas. He’s got a cool driveway and it was fun to hear him start this up and test thins all the time. It’s a shame Les is no longer around.
Shockwave is one wild truck I seen it for the first time in life back in 2008 and they also had a jet quad witch was awesome seeing that thing rip down the track
I know im asking randomly but does any of you know of a method to get back into an Instagram account?? I was stupid forgot the password. I love any help you can offer me.
@Cannon Toby I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and im trying it out now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Need to come up with a way to protect those back tires, in case an engine blows, like it did yesterday. Everything appeared to be running well, until that happened, once those rear tires were shredded, Chris was just along for the ride. To me, it looked like he did everything he could to save it- sometimes, it's just not possible. My condolences to the Darnell family.
Shockwave was just here in New Orleans for the air show, raced the prop job. Beat the prop job. Years ago, Shockwave raced Big Foot int Baton Rouge at No Problem Raceway, no contest. That truck throws some heat... (1st)
I was there for that air show in Belle Chasse. The truck is awesome in every way. I stood close when the truck fired up and first lit the afterburners.
I was sitting in the tower at EnglishTown Raceway in Oldbridge NJ when shockwave blow the signs off the building and cracked some of the windows, the window in my suite wash shaking violently, but one awesome experience to watch the flames come out the back of that thing!!!!
i have seen this truck run very very cool at night would love to just sit in the truck and vist his shop and get pictures with him and my daughter great great video
What a shame this truck crashed today at an air show in Michigan and the driver was killed. Not sure which driver it was, but I send my condolences. What a terrible tragedy.
Wow, he (the father) was talking about how engines rarely fall off or blow up and getting engines off of eBay. Those engines have parts that are traveling at very high rates of speed and typically need metallurgical tests after so many years, he talking about engines that are 30 40 & 50 years old if not older, wow, i wonder how much testing they go through (annual tests)? Like an airplane would?
Unlike the mega companies that can afford a fleet of jets using these engines. They have a way tighter budget so preventive maintenance is their main way of not going bankrupt needing to buy engines
Hey Rich, love your videos absolutely amazing how much knowledge you have on cars and truck, you've inspired me to do my own repairs and maintinice on my trucks. I also own a skid steer and was hoping if and when you get a chance to work on one if you could make a good 5 parter on it. thanks again.
Wonder after they greave for the huge loss they would consider some sort of comeback in respect!? Ether way I loved seeing this truck! As a kid went to monster trucks demo derbys mud bogs but when I saw that thing I was scared!!!💥👍
Came here to learn more about the Family behind this truck. So devastating to hear his boy died! I really want to know what exactly happened... But unfortunately, the one that knows for certain... Is no longer with us! So unfortunate! He was at the Battle Creek, MI feild of flight airshow. Which is not far from me at all! It's often been a place we go to have fun and watch balloons and fireworks or the Airshow. So knowing this iconic man and machine, took the life of a young man. Is truly heart breaking! I'm certain the father is blaming himself and feeling guilty for not being the one who drove that day! I CAN'T IMAGINE HOW IT MUST FEEL LOSING A CHILD! I'VE ONLY GOT ONE BOY, IF HE DIES I DIE! HE'S MY HEART, WITHOUT HIM. THERE'S NO ME! So if any friends or family of this young man read this.. Just know I send my condolences and I'll pray for you all! BE SAFE, TRY TO STAY POSITIVE! AND KNOW, HE WAS LIKELY NOT FORCED TO DRIVE IT. HE PROBABLY LOVED WHAT HE WAS DOING... It's truly unfortunate when something that brings us so much happiness. Can also bring so much sadness and devastation! 😢🙏😇😢
prancstaman.... "Back in the 90's"..... Neal didn't own it. The truck was originally built and ran in 1983 by Les Shockley which is how the name "Shockwave" came to be on the truck. Bob Motz from NJ was actually the very first one to build a jet powered semi... a KW. Bob's KW only had a single engine on his.... but I've seen him beat Les in the 1/4 mile, more than once. Neal talks a lot about the Pete running 376 mph.... but that was when Les had it, not Neal. Les actually has had a best run of 381+ with it in the "standing mile" (from a dead stop... like in drag racing.) and has had the Chevy at 401 and 406mph.
If I had the money to have a chance to ride in that truck way before the wreck happened and I had gotten out of it after the run I would be so dizzy from the excitement of it and I would have to sit down on the ground
376 mph is 605.1 kph. Nobody is ever going to read this, but the power they give is BS, and here's the reasoning, for the record. Their web site says they run J34-48 engines but the highest mark I can find anywhere not linked to the truck is J34-46 which is around 3,500hp. There were a few versions with afterburner, the most powerful was the J34-WE-32 with 4,900 lbf (21.8 kN) thrust with afterburner. That would give 15,000 horsepower. You'd need more than twice that to reach their claimed power. So you'd need an afterburner that produced five times as much as the production models. These don't even have variable nozzles, so the thrust they give is increasing turbine exit pressure and reducing air flow through the engine. I wonder what AgentJZ would say about this? But in the end it's a show truck and it looks impressive. Other places claim they are using J85 engines, which are almost identical. Scaled Composites uses two of them on the White Knight lift vehicle and they achieve about 5,000 pounds thrust. If they really had 36,000 hp, which I have been conflating with pounds thrust, they'd be able to pull 5g off the line. The 1/4 mile runs I can find are all around 240mph or 107m/s in almost 7 seconds. v^2 = 2as, v=107, s=401, a = 107x107/2x401 = 15. That means 15m/s/s acceleration or 1.5g. 7,000 x 1.5 gives 10,500 pounds thrust ignoring drag which, given the huge drag at high speed, seems to fit with 15,000 pounds thrust those engines can really generate. There is no accepted thrust to hp conversion, it depends what you are doing. In mechanical terms 1hp is 33,000 pounds feet per minute, or 550 pounds feet per second. But if you don't achieve movement then what's the distance to measure you power over? Conversions range from 1-3.5 depending who you ask and what it's for. An LM1500 power turbine is based on a J79, you can convert them both ways without mechanical changes to the compressor or turbine, and that is rated at 10,000 shp. A J79 is rated at 12,000 pounds thrust. So in practice a 1hp turbine gives 1.2 pounds of thrust. So using a 1:1 conversion is pretty kind to truck. The LM 2500 is rated at 26,500 hp but the lowest power CF6 (from which they can be made by removing the fan) is rated at 41,000 pounds thrust. They uprated them in the 90s and the LM2500+ is rated just under 41,000hp but the turbofan versions go to 70,000 pounds thrust, so unless you know what core they used it's hard to calculate the actual conversion.
They probably figure out how much fuel they burn, the potential energy in that amount of fuel, and turn that into a hp number. Since nobody is going to argue them (except you lol) they can post that on a poster
I am a GT technician and am currently working on CT58-140. I completely agree that the hp figure is complete BS.They do however claim on their website that the truck only makes 21,000 LB thrust. Now the -48 model claimed to make 3400Lb thrust. With the engine running hotter than it would have been aloud to in the aircraft combined with the afterburner I could see the combined thrust (between the 3 engines) being close to the 21,000 they claim (although they are really are stretching it). However, this is a thrust engine and not a torque producing engine so trying to apply and Hp (RPM X Torque / 5252) is ridiculous.
Right, the thrust to hp conversion is really a stretch. However, there are enough cores used for turbofan, turbojet and turboshaft applications to check that 1hp per pound of thrust is close enough. Another example is the aviation and marine RR Olympus where it was known as a TM3B, the Olympus 593 was around 30,000 pounds thrust and the turboshaft was up to 28,000 but derated to 25,000 in RN use. So the 1:1 conversion is pretty easy to justify. But when you start flying them the calculation of real horsepower achieved becomes difficult as speed and altitude change. GE claims the GE90-115B runs near 100,000 horsepower at cruise.
Yes, I'm a professional engineer and my life is made of making claims and validating other people's claims, and then putting them into practice and getting what I predicted or accepted.
We're sorry to hear the devastating news of Chris' passing, our thoughts and prayers are with the Darnell family.

@@bingysbackyard Same, and same. I just found this and also watched this back in late 80s early 90s
RIP to Shockwave and driver. 300+ mph in a semi absolute mad lads.
So sad 😭
PETAL UT METAL until the end
RIP Chris 🙏 HIM and his family made alot of people smile. There is nothing like seeing a big ass truck with three jet engines and go 300+ mph.
I grew up watching this truck at Moroso in Palm Beach, Florida. Fell in love with cars at the qtr mile track!🙌✌
Yeah, I've seen it at Moroso a few times.
Always will be remembered for his jet truck fleet of entertainment R.I.P.
RIP crazy dude. Living the dream

You're first shot was perfect timing. I loved it. Great job on this video. I really enjoyed it
Rich that was phenomenal! Great shots, great interview, all the works! I'd put that out there with any pro piece that you'd find on TV. Bravo!

It was Chris driving, RIP.
I saw Shockwave back in the early 1990's at a Blue Angels air show in LaCrosse, Wisconsin and I took pictures of it (35mm slides actually).
You have to see them send it in person its amazing
