  • Float fishing with a centerpin is a popular tactic for steelhead and brown trout on the Great Lakes tributaries, but it’s also very effective on trout closer to home. Chris Megan and Jimmy Fee join guide Joe Diorio on a perfect late-winter day to try out this technique on the brown and rainbow trout of the Farmington River in Connecticut.
Special thanks to our guide Joe Diorio of JoeDiorioGuideService.com

Great video, grew up fishing that river......was just up there last October. Caught over 28 rainbows from the dam on down....no browns though. The park near the sand plant has some monster browns....PB was 28” ....live line shiner down the run.....package store train bridge....12lb rainbow.....spoon bouncing the bottom, daredevil, many many memories....

Can I use spinning gear and this technique to catch them or do I need fly equipment?

A lot of people spin fish it. There are some interesting regulations on the Farmington (seasons, catch and release management stretches, etc.) Here's a link that may help with different regulations: diyflyfishing.com/farmington-river-ct/ Also, UpCountry Sportfishing is a great tackle store that can help you with any questions as they know the river better than anyone. Best of luck and send in your photos!

Don't ever be mistaken to think that centerpin fishing is the same as fly fishing with a fly rod, fly reel, and a tapered fly line because it is entirely different. Yes you can fish flies, with a float, on a centerpin outfit but it is not fly casting or fly fishing in the more traditional sense of the phrase "fly fishing".

Have to be careful doing his, different section are fly fishing only, and using egg sacks in those areas is a no-no

Not on the Farmington river. There are no sections that are fly only on the Farmington River

Church Pool is not downstream from the Bone Yard, and those weren’t 20” fish. Plus, no net. WTF is wrong with these guys. One dude calls himself a guide. I’d never hire that guy.

It's okay, I don't mind him pointing people in the wrong direction. That said he is a very knowledgeable guide and just misspoke.

It is kind of pointless for this video to say "Centerpin fishing has become a popular way to fish for steelhead and brown trout in the Great Lake tributaries". What does that have to do with pinning the Farmington? How is that at all pertinent to your video?
