  • S14 Ep1 - Fly-Fish The Farmington
Join Host Chris Megan and Guide Ron Merly for an exciting adventure fly-fishing Connecticut’s Farmington River. With a constant stream of cool water pouring from upstream dams, the Farmington River is a spectacular tailwater fishery for several species of trout. Thanks to an aggressive trout management program and good conditions for natural reproduction and growth, the Farmington is one of the most productive year-round trout fisheries in New England.

This is true. I grew up fishing the Farmington my whole life. Taking it for granted basically. Then traveled to other states and the rivers they would say were the best places to fish were mind blowingly sub standard to me. And when you see all the outta state plates in the parking areas I would ask them “what you don’t have any rivers in New York to fish. ?” And they said not as good as this Farmington river. So. We’re lucky

I can remember back in the late 70s early 80s the Hitchcock chair company would give a chair to the biggest trout caught, the river used to be lined with fishermen, it looked like pictures I've seen of the Salmon and Pulaski rivers in NY, do they still have this contest today?

It stays cool all summer, where the Housatonic turns into a smallmouth stream in the summer. The Housatonic is excellent otherwise.

Everyone is so convinced that the Farmington is great trout fishing. In my experience it is mediocre at best and is over fished. Most of the fish are stocked annually.

The river is definitely stocked frequently. We were fishing there a few weeks ago and caught a number of native Browns though which was really exciting to see. Do you have any other trout rivers you'd recommend over the Farmington?

On The Water Media, there are no native Browns in the Farmington. There aren't even any native Browns in the United States. There are wild Browns but not natives, big difference. Only brookies can be native in New England.

@@philipklug7784 there a plenty of hold over fish there is miles of no kill fishing on the Farmington all the fish that annnualy get stocked dont just go away!!!

Brian Cochran, you are absolutely correct. What I was talking about was native trout. If a trout is a holdover or even a wild trout, that doesn't make it native. Brown trout are only native to Europe. Rainbows are only native to North America's west coast and brookies are only native to to North America's east coast. The Browns in the Farmington are either hatchery fish/holdovers or wild, not native.
