  • This GoldBelt Tramway leads to some of the best overlook viewpoints of downtown Juneau, Alaska.
And…it’s not just the scene when you first exit the tram, it’s all about venturing on Mount Roberts Trail!
Mount Roberts Trail from the station house at the “top of it all” was absolutely spectacular!
This is a MUST DO while here in Juneau.
The price of the fare for August 24, 2022 was $45 roundtrip. That’s a bit steep but it’s all about the memories in the end.
The ride to and from the top was one of the smoothest rides I have taken in terms of gondolas.
No swinging, very sturdy and fast. It was up and down the mountain in 5 - 7 minutes.
At the top at the station house is a gift shop, restrooms, a restaurant and theater. I stopped inside the gift shop to purchase a magnet.
Now it’s time to get hiking!
I was advised by people I spoke with that I must hike to Gold Ridge and Gastineau Peak.
Gold Ridge was 3 miles roundtrip, 2 - 3 hours in time and gaining 1500 feet in elevation.
Right beside Gold Ridge is the remainder of the trail to Gastineau Peak.
Gastineau Peak is 4 miles in total roundtrip from the station house, taking about 4 - 4.5 hours total and gaining 1900 feet in elevation.
To put it simply…if you’ve arrived at Gold Ridge, it’s only 6/10th’s more of a mile to reach Gastineau Peak.
The hike up to Gold Ridge and Gastineau Peak wasn’t difficult, imo, and that’s because I was constantly stopping for pictures and lost track of the fact I was on a trail.
The higher I got, the better the sights were looking down upon Juneau and the seaside waterway.
Although it rains for 260 out of the 360 days of the year in Juneau, I can’t believe how fortunate I was stopping here on a rare, beautifully, sunny day. The views were magical!
Also, the tram can get very BUSY once a cruise ship pulls into port and starts letting passengers exit.
Mendenhall Glacier is probably the most popular destination in Juneau, but this GoldBelt Tram is not far behind.
I’d just advise to try and beat the cruise rush so you’re not waiting long in line to ride the tram.
Lastly, it’s very important to come here early in the day because you’ll have the sun positioned at your back which will greatly enhance your photo taking moments.
Eventually as the day goes along, the sun moves across the sky and by mid - late afternoon, you’re looking straight into the sun.
Finally, I’ll just leave with this…
Mount Roberts and this GoldBelt Tram and Hike were the most memorable highlights from my time visiting Juneau, Alaska.

How long did it take you to hike the top from the tram?

I spent the afternoon hiking about 4 - 5 hours at the top of the tram to Gastineau Peak, but with stopping often for picture taking. It can be done in less time, though I was in no hurry.

How much is the tram? Do you have to buy an excursion on the ship, or can you just go to the tram on your own?

I went last year and it was $45 roundtrip. But it wouldn’t surprise me if they raised prices this year. You can absolutely walk up and purchase a ticket spontaneously. It’s easy
