- Jenova Dreamweaver appears to be a boss similar in design to the various incarnations of Jenova fought in the original game at key points. The iconic J-E-N-O-V-A theme from FF7 is practically recreated note for note in phase three, but with more complex and high fidelity instrumentation. The choice to expand it into a three part suite elevates the boss battle itself. The threat of this character is not so much its intent to harm, but in trapping the characters in this strange dimension. One could even say its appearance so early in the game is an attempt to get the cast to become aware of the larger stakes earlier.

Oh yes!! Before the release I was a bit worried about the new version of this soundtrack, but holy SHIT it's fucking incredible!
Exactly and I love it. I love ff7 and Uematsu so much when it was hard to find the sheet music. I rearranged and would play Still more fighting with 4 Violas instead of violin cello or any of the many possible other instruments since that's what I have.... But couldn't find the sheet music at the time so I had to do it all by ear. The things that happen when passion and boresom

The transition of Jenova -> Rufus was actually really damn well done, one of the highlights of the game especially on Hard Mode. Even with Gotterdammerung, Rufus can fuck your shit up big time on Hard.
Some didn’t like it ? More like A very small minority.
Everyone's raving about Phase 3, but each phase gives you something different. Phase one feels like some super cinematic song designed for epic and dramatic scenes. It sounds like some of the best music from Game of Thrones. Phase 2 starts amping up your excitement and teasing you with what's coming. It ups the stakes, makes your heart race as you anticipate the climax of the song. It uses a lot of little musical tricks to make your brain anticipate the payoff to come. Then the bridge into phase 3 comes, and the long held note right before the synth kicks in keeps you hanging on that knife's edge of excitement... and then the beat drops and we all get our sweet sweet payoff.
This is the same way they wrote the new One Winged Angel. As one nameless UA-cam commentor put it:

Part 1 also interweaves the Shinra theme and parts of what sounds like the FF12 esper battle theme

I think if there was any way to make the original tune even better, it is to introduce phases 1 and 2 to it. It adds so much.
Phase 3 rewards you with nostalgia for even surviving this long.
Phase 1 and 2 are the most forgettable choir orchestras you can think of, with a little bit of Jenova theme sprinkled in. They sound like a forgettable midboss in a Dark Souls ripoff.
11:27 How can you not love that little nod to One-Winged Angel? There's something about that Phase 3 section that's almost cheeky in how it leans into nostalgia and the retro feel.

The best part about this song is how much it *tricks* you. At first, you're thinking that Phase 2 is the new standard for the song, which is great on its own since it fits the remakes new orchestrated variations of most of its classic songs.
And then Phase 3 hits. You get goosebumps. The nostalgia hits full force. You're back in 1997. And in that moment, you smile, and you're treated the absolute best piece of music in FF7R (in my opinion). The transition alone is masterful. For me, the Phase 3 drop is where FF7R became GOTY.
Apparently, Squeenix didn't pay enough for Remake to get the Game of the Year award, so The Last of Us 2 "won" instead. God, I'm glad I stopped watching that mess due to running around screaming about Sephiroth making it to Smash.

Square have been training themselves in the fan service department since 2014 with A Realm Reborn.
Square knew exactly what they were doing with the remake. After all they made the original. But the remake somehow is even better than the original. There was a lot on the table for this to go wrong, but Square knocked it out of the fucking park with how to deal with this game. They knew EXACTLY what the fans would want most.

Love the comments on this i completely agree with everything everyone is saying and to take such a beloved soundtrack and improve upon it by leaps and bounds shouldn't be possible yet here we are. It's the first game I've ever platinum'd and im currently on my 6th play through because i have my save files right before my favorite boss battles but i wanna redo them because my old files don't have my fully lvld second elemental materia and it bugs me so im redoing my saves looooool the replayability on this game should be researched its the perfect amount of build up at any given point the addiction you get from playing it, the battle system is so insanely satisfying the funnest of most all games ive played with ghost of tsushima being right beside it with horizon zero dawn i could go on looooooool

People talking about how the last part is the only good part, but the previous two parts are still important. Part 3 is your reward for staying alive and kicking ass, and parts 1 and 2 build you up to that. You don't just blow your load right away.
thats an absolute true statement. the first 2 parts is a build up and is amazing on their own. but your reward for keeping up is the 3rd phrase wich is the absolute fucking marvel of this fight by a long shot
Well, that is probably because the music in the third phase is the song we all remember when fighting J.E.N.O.V.A. in the original game. :)

If anything I believe Jenova will be expounded upon in this remake because Aerith says it is the "source" of everything. Can't wait to see what they do with Jenova in the next parts!!

So if you break down the songs, almost all of them have motifs or movements from other songs in the game. The “hellhouse” song has almost every song in the game mixed in to it. What’s ridiculous is that they can do that and make it almost unnoticeable unless you really listen. Amazing work.

Jenova was always a creepy cosmic horror boss, but the remake really did her justice. The design looks straight out of a lovecraftian novel.
I was so caught up in this fight, I completely forgot I was fighting j e n o v a until the third part and the music hit me with instant nostalgia.

I love how Jenova is basically John Carpenter's "The Thing", and I also love how Sephiroth is basically the Perfect Cell of the story, in that he's an experimental evolution of Jenova. Like, Jenova was bad enough, but thanks to papa Hojo, Sephiroth is worse.

Sephiroth is but a conduit of Jenova. His name comes from the sefirot from the Hebrew Kabbalah. A sefirot is the manifestation of God's will on Earth. Like when Moses parted the Red Sea to lead his people to..... The Promised Land. That makes Moses a sefirot of Jehovah.
Sephiroth was created to lead Shinra to The Promised Land because they though Jenova was an ancient. Sephiroth and his various incarnations post Crisis Core are really Jenova. Thus Jenova is the ultimate villain. Everyone else is just a cog in the wheel.
@@JustinC721 To me it just makes more sense that Sephiroth, being basically a hybrid of a powerful being like Jenova and the advanced Tech of Shinra, that he'd be the next step in line for Jenova's race/species/kind. Sephiroth represents the misuse of life. Finding something unknown, but abusing it as well as our own kind to try to achieve something more. Regardless of the cost, this leads to he next step in evolution for that life. Jenova's time is over, the Planet and Shinra has led to it's next step in life, Sephiroth. Much like John Carpenter's The Thing, forever adapting, forever evolving. Just the next step.
And that is how you pay respects to an iconic cosmic horror.
Why do people hate the build up? I do not understand. This music is telling a story. It has a beginning. It has a middle. it has an ending. The beginning helps you understand what you're getting yourself into. Not to get you too excited too early. Then, we have the middle portion...things begin to get a little exciting. You can even FEEL the build up. And then we have the ending...from the beginning of phase 3 to the end...the epicness starts...dramatic build up...and a slow, steady end...standing ovation. This is smart composition.

It hits harder when you distinctly know the sounds of this 20 years ago....how it gives you that nostalgia feeling...I really love phase 2 of this leading to that climatic feeling we all know. FF7 was and still is the best one in the franchise from 1-15 and I been saying this before the remake. 1997 FF7 was the turning point for all RPGs you've previously played. The remake was the icing on the cake 💯

When phase 3 started, I dropped my controller in awe with goosebumps. I had the classic JENOVA as my ringtone for years.
Me too man! I still have the original jenova theme as my ringtone. When I heard the third phase of the song, I was in awe as well. I paused the game and listened to it with so much joy. Amazing theme man.
When phase 3 dropped I was gasping and bouncing on the couch like a hyperactive 3 year old. My husband was giving me weird looks (he never played the original.)

There were so many times when i was playing this game and just in awe of the music. Even times when i wasn't immediately in awe of the music (sector 7 slum theme is an example) by the time i came back to the area, i loved it. And i found myself humming it all night long.
I know man, I felt the whole game making me feel like this honestly. When I finished the game I did not know what to even feel, If I liked, loved it or felt dissapointed. The more I keep replaying and listening to the music the more I fall in love with it and understand the masterpiece of a game this is. Even with the music they put such craft and care to play with your emotions, I couldn't ask for more. Little worried about the next installments with what they introduced to the story at the end but hopeful it will turn out as great as this.

Tadayoshi Makino truly NAILED it with both this and the airbuster theme. Suzuki and Hamauzu weren't involved with these two tracks at all. Not really surprised since it didn't sound like them.

Man, the model of Jenova is incredibly well-detailed, it's so creepy. Like the way the tentacles flail and drop when you sever them. The texture is incredibly alien-like. You kinda miss some of these details when you're playing the game. They did wonders with this Jenova track.
The Jenova theme we heard in original FFVII and Advent Children was already a masterpiece. Now in here we are listening a Jenova theme with 3 different build up phase, and each phase is more than just masterpiece!
Being a loner I love this game more than anyone could ever possibly imagine. I don't just get a feel for the characters. No. They are like the family I've never had. Aerith just makes you want to smile just being around her. And Barret with his big mouth lol. I love this game. I really do.

You'll be surprised how many of us feel the same man. In some places, this game made me laugh and cry within a span of 10 minutes. I did not know it was even possible for a video game to make me feel the range of emotions this game did. This is going to be one of the most treasured gaming experiences of my life

When Phase 3 started I was hit with so many emotions. Nostalgia overload.
For me I love what they’re doing with the remake. They made it so old school gamers can feel excited about a fresh take on the franchise and game we grew up loving and not just a dull remake where we already know 10.% what’s going to happen.
The remake didn't give me an exact copy that I thought I wanted. Instead it showed me what I really wanted was to relive that feeling I had when I played the first game.

For me, I never got a chance to grow up with or play the OG. After trying out FFVIIR once, I tried the original and... felt spoiled? Like, I have barely the patience or attention span to handle strictly turn-based stuff like that, so I think it's not for me. Conversely, I loved Remake (and even understood and liked the Whispers changes... I guess I'm a terrible person for enjoying an obviously shit game, huh? 🙄)
The way this has hints of the Jenova theme and then blends right into it is just awesome

Soundtrack is a solid 10/10, they really knocked it out of the park. The game as a whole, tho... eh... probably a 8/10.
Oh no, it will definitely get GOTY for sure. Over 3 1/2 million copies sold in a flash within the first 2 days of its release. Several different game/magazine critics gave their highest rating of the game.
Keep in mind, this is only phase 1 of the game. Part 2 is gonna be dope.

They were definitely a couple critics who gave it perfect scores, but there were some who gave it sub par reviews as well. It's currently at 87 on metacritic.
Personally I liked the game but I think there were too many things (terrible pacing, abundant filler, unnecessary ending) that hold it back from being a perfect game
JENOVA is one of my favorite music pieces in any FF. At first, I was so pissed on the remake version that was lacking. But then the transitions layer through... it was brilliant!
I heard this song for the first time watching a playthrough of the game one UA-cam and didn't really notice it. Fast forward a year to now when I finally played the game for myself and this song stuck in my brain for days after beating it, even after Rufus Shinra and One Winged Angel

I played ff7 every year from 1997 until a few years back, I don't own a ps4 so never played or looked at the remake. Absolutely incredible OST

I played ff7 when I was 11years old. It was crazy hard. I remember how terrifying Jenova fights were. The bgm was perfect, there was always this sense of urgency, and saving the world.
Once that music in the Third Phase Started i knew: there was No way i was gonna lose with how hyped Up that Soundtrack got me!
I'm just so glad this ended up being a very good game. Many things could have gone wrong, but they didn't. Thank you Square Enix.
This is the biggest masterpiece in video gaming ever since god of war in 2018.

It’s crazy how they took sephiroths theme, guitar parts from AC jenova theme and final jenova fight theme, mashed them up and still managed to make it this good for phase 3. Once again squares sound teams just smashing it 👏👏👏👏
I actually like the story changes, they give a new surprise for any returning players. But what I really love about it is the music changes. The music was already good and Mr Nobuo Uematsu figured out a way to make it better.
Uematsu only made the theme song, Hollow. The soundtrack is otherwise arranged by other composers. This particular track was arranged by Tadayoshi Makino.
Honestly, I'm genuinely looking at this game, not as a remake with slight changes. But as a full on sequel to the original and Advent Children. The OG game ends with Aerith's face looking into the pipe, the same visual at the start, hinting at a time loop of sorts. So, it just stands to reason that this is a sequel to the original game.
That transition in the song during phase 3 is god tier

I wish that would of happened in the game, the fact that his office is clean when he sits in the chair was kind of a let down, hojo's lab was wrecked but the office.. Clean.
Watching Rufus walk in like wtf? Was something I thought was gonna happen... So it makes me speculate, was this real or in the characters heads?

If Jenova's theme is this amazing in Remake, imagine how it'll be on the boat and at the Ancient City, or in the Crater!

Every time I come back to this composition, the build up, the tension, the desperation and finally relentless fight to survive, mixing with all the nostalgia and emotions... my eyes become watery. And it's not something that happens normally in my rigid case.. God it's such a blessing to hear and experience FF7 atmosphere. Pure admiration in awe!

This entire moment (music, boss fight, characters, environment, atmosphere) is GOTY material.
I live for the slow burn and eventual build up that is this remade song. I played OG when it first came out, J e n o v a was my absolute favorite song. This is remake of the song is perfection.
Part 3 is always going to be the favourite but I also think part 1 and 2 are incredible

Chapter 17 was the most fun I've had in gaming in a long time....and then you have this amazing piece of music and action.
I like how the last boss is literally the 'plot' in enemy form, they are fighting to break free from the original FFVII plot.
To me, this boss fight crowned FF7Remake as MY GOTY. Everything about this boss fight was right.
I played the original when I was 7, and it blew me away. Always will be on my list of favorite games. I used to played the original every couple of years for those nostalgia feels.
That said this remake was perfect in my eyes. New with just the perfect nostalgic vibes. This game, and this part specifically made me feel like a little kid again.
I'm so invested in the Characters. 10/10 from my lens.

I feel like the build up really reflects the "Wtf is going on why are we fighting Jenova now??". Honestly thats what makes her and Sephiroth scary again in the remake.
I dunno about you guys, but Jenova scared the shit out of me in the original because this disgusting looking... monster came out of NOWHERE in the boat. Second playthrough isn't as scary because now I know where she'll appear.
You would expect the same in the remake, she'll first appear after we left Midgar. NO. This skull faced alien appeared much sooner in the bloody Shinra building while infesting the whole room zerg style. The same feeling of fear returns when I saw her appear like this the first time.
The new plotline may cause some head scratching, but it certainly made Jenova and Sephiroth scary again, cause you don't know what they're up to. You only know they're out there, and can attack you anytime.
hey, you say that, but dont you also feel that in the original Sephiroth was scary, because you never actually saw him in the first disc, just a slow build up, seeing the Midgar zolom etc. the suspense is what made it scary- but here in the remake, you've seen him early on and fought him (easily), so chasing him wont be as suspenseful because he isnt as threatening - in my opinion. I know he had to make some appearance in this game for it to sell, but it was the pacing of the original and the suspense that made it. and then Killing Aerith was the cherry on top, all in disc 1. Also, in the original, you never actually fight him in his main form.
However, I thought this part with Jenova, and the music, worked well
@@tidetidus Yes, I know, that's what made Sephiroth so scary in the original, his movements looks inhuman because of Jenova, and we're not supposed to know that until later. But if they use the exact same plot, he won't be as scary because we'll know what will happen. Making Sephiroth appear early will make us keep guessing and on edge on when he'll unexpectedly appear again, since it looks like he's 'not following the script'
Actually, after seeing him in Dissidia, I'm kinda sad we never get to fight Sephiroth in his 'human' form, and so happy we got to do it in the remake. Though I'm never a fan of a 'post transformation' fight, feels like you're fighting something else.

To me, that pattern of rapid synthesizer notes in phase three (and the original piece) are what represent Jenova's naked influence.
They keep going _on and on, again and again_ with only an octave shift in response to any changes around them. It's an uncaringly cold, calculating sound ruthlessly nagging you with a single message: work harder, move faster. The Calamity's brainwashed 'children' know no peace; they're abused tools used to advance her agenda. Even death is no excuse to be a disappointment to Mother, or to stop throwing yourself into her conquest efforts.
Sephiroth was actually a very strong man to last as long as he did. He bore the weight of resisting a *demon* within the Masamune and an insane concentration of Jenova heritage in his cells with little ill effect until the Nibelheim Incident. He was a mighty war hero, with any ego something he'd earned the right to through sheer excellence. Then he was hit point blank with an almost entirely complete account of his true nature and parentage... clearly meant to stay a secret.
It was humiliating and revolting beyond words to him. The fact he knew nothing of the angelic Lucrezia Crescent's life or actions beyond offering him for experimentation and them disappearing didn't help. Jenova offered a way to think of things where he was as glorious as before.... even better, in fact.
Sepjiroth did not "last long." He is flat out immune. This Jenova controls everyone crap os exactly that, crap. The story flat out tells you what is going on. He is using her. SOLDIER minds are not susceptible to the cells. The Junon seller wore a robe but retained his self and never comitted suicide.
@@Cetra29 Even if that was true Sephiroth Crescent definitely 'lasted': things like him are not meant to be, and Jenova is literally a toxic influence. In any attempt to replicate Project S, it seems subjects suffered from serious mental and/or health problems before too long. Sephiroth was superior to them, but must have endured similar strain even as a baby. He grew to adulthood still enduring it and then constantly entered a war's hotzones, with no real relationships to ground him. But he stayed healthy as a horse and nothing worse than a high-functioning, totally benign sociopath.
The encounter with the Junon vendor was an obvious joke-- especially since only that SOLDIER adopted the visual cue of a robe, and did it after Sephiroth achieved as much of a Reunion as he could. Clearly normal SOLDIERS are immune, missing something that gives Jenova a hold over them. The one thing that connects all the people who could be compelled by Jenova is that they were efforts to recreate Sephiroth. So why would the original, who had a greater portion of Jenova's being and might, be immune to her influence?
The obvious game events make things look like Sephiroth's in charge; he's the one whose name is spoken by the travelling clones or seen giving commands that must be obeyed. The game even makes Jenova a villain you defeat in combat several times, and who falls before Sephiroth does. But he would've been unable to usurp anyone's will without Jenova's consent, and if you think things over carefully it seems more like _he_ was the one being used.
Jenova was an interstellar parasite with a lot of wiliness and might; it had taken the lives of _an entire civilization of telluric shamans_ to seal her away when she was at full strength. Being a natural and unopposed parasite would give her a 'user' mentality, and she had a mental hotline to a collaborator who derived most of his power from her. That man first turned to her while he was broken and ashamed, as a way to rebuild his sense of identity and purpose. Then behold: mention of her and her goals entered his speech all the time, with nothing but praise and admiration shown for them. The brothers born as manifestations of Sephiroth's will seemed to define their entire lives in relation to Jenova. _You can't convince me she didn't mess with Sephiroth's head while he was vulnerable, reshaping and encouraging his fantasy until he believed that anything she said was the truth._
I don't know why she didn't seem to make a move before the game began. I suspect she was severely weakened and out of touch from all the time spent starving while imprisoned by the Cetra. Her head needed all those years spent feeding off the North Crater's mako emissions for their plan to work. And before Sephiroth came to her she was neither in any shape to exert much influence, nor certain what angle to play if she did.
I'm pretty sure Nobuo Uematsu was just having fun with his old music once it reached phased 3
