    I bought this back in the middle of April of this year 2019. I plugged a 1tb hard drive into it. It works just fine. I found that the flash drive cause skipping around. I don't know what that was from but the instructions did tell me that you should use a standard hard drive. This thing will handle up to a 2 terabyte hard drive and that's it but you'll get a ton of shows on here. I'm really glad that I bought this thing. The price of about $30 was not a problem with me. I still have cable but honestly I don't use it I only have it for the internet but I'm thinking this is the best way to go. In Chicago we have about 68 channels you can choose from and it really does the job well.

      Most thumb drives have slow read write speeds, while most standard hard drives are fast enough. I think it was just easier for them to put no thumbs in the manual rather that explain the speed difference. So if your thumb or flash is fast enough it will work fine.

    I have owned two of these. The first one was bought from Amazon in September 2017. Good performance as a tuner and DVR for our 55" display. One day in late June 2019, the HW180STB box wouldn't power on. DEAD!
    Ordered identical box again from Amazon. Poor performance. Screen would freeze for seconds at a time and lines appeared on screen. I thought the antenna pre-amp or something was bad. Connected antenna to 12" TV with no performance issues. Tried everything to get this HW180STB to work right to no avail. Returned the item and bought a Amazon Fire TV Recast for $129 on Prime Day Sale. Huge upgrade. Love it. Worth every penny. The Recast is on sale typically for Black Friday (November) and Prime Day (July) so if you can wait that long to save $100+, go for it. There are plenty of reviews on UA-cam of the Recast. Check it out. I may be making a review video soon as a 6 month user of this device. I use it everyday and I am a big fan.

    I bought one for me and one for my lady friend. We both use them quite a bit. They're real nice and simple to use and for $30 you really can't go wrong with it.There are more expensive options but they require you to have an internet connection and one of those would be the tableau. But you know for $30 you can't go wrong with it. I use a 1tb flash drive. For some reason my hard drives just don't work in this thing anymore. But so far the flash drive is working just fine.

    Love your channel, Vince. I took your advice and bought an RCA Yagi antenna and installed it on my roof not long ago. I went a few steps further than you though by getting an HD HomeRun (a super-cool tuner that takes an OTA antenna signal and then sends it out an ethernet port to your router). HD HomeRun comes in a dual tuner model (~$90) as well as a quad tuner (~$140). For only an extra $50, I recommend the quad tuner so you eliminate every recording conflict you might ever have. My house is wired and has a couple of wireless access points (Wi-Fi), so I'm able to get OTA TV through any smart TV, Xbox One, computer, laptop, iOS device, Android device or Apple TV (Roku isn't supported). The cool thing about Apple TV is that you can pause live TV even without a DVR. I then bought a WD My Cloud PR2100 NAS device for use as my DVR (it can hold a ridiculous amount of programming, seriously). I can now record, pause, etc all of my OTA programming. The DVR support from HD HomeRun is $35/yr. Long story short: I get dozens of watchable channels, all crystal clear and many in HD and my viewing experience is better and cheaper than anything DirecTV ever gave me. Lastly, the UI of HD HomeRun is gorgeous and intuitive. I have zero complaints. I'm 1 month into cord cutting and have 30+ movies recorded on my DVR and hours of other shows and I haven't even made a dent in my DVR's capacity. Thanks again for sharing all that you do and hit me up if you have any questions.

    This looks like something I might get. These things are more than just converting the TV signal like they came out with 10 years ago. Thank you for showing this. I bought my lady friend this roughly the same item about a month ago. I'm glad that they you can do a lot more with these today than 10 years ago. My Roku TV pooped out about 5 months ago so something to think about getting.

      @@VinceRocca I will now elaborate on blackout proofing. In the event a cable or satellite provider removes a broadcast channel from its lineup because of failed carriage negotiations, said channel or channels will still be available over-the-air with the use of a digital broadcast antenna and/or digital converter box. The addition of a pvr (or dvr) will be a plus since said programs can be recorded with an attached usb flash drive or external hard drive (I have a 1TB hard drive tethered to a television in my home, plus one cable box tethered to another television). Hope this information is useful. Once again, Happy New Year.

    Thanks for the tutorial Bro. Brought for our new 70" & 80" VIZIO TV's that don't come with built in tuners anymore. Don't want us to not be able to get regular news channels if a hurricane hits the area. Spectrum came out to install internet and cable in May. Now as of Nov 6th 2018 they are going all digital here in Tampa, FL. So between this and my Kodi/Amazon TV setup we could really keep internet and just cut cable.

    Wait, you watch "Big Smother?" lol. The guide problems are often due to the broadcaster not sending that digital signal info on their broadcast signal. I have the world's smallest smart TV (Samsung) in the RV and it has the guide built in (but is at the mercy of the signal being there in the first place). I will look for one of these units to see if they ship to Canada, got some off grid camping trips planned and it will be handy at night for my outside TV. (yeah I live in 200 square feet but have 3 TV's!). Lol. Good comprehensive review Vince! Thanks.

      We’ve watched Big Brother since season 1. Same with Survivor and Amazing Race. We love Big Bro. In Europe I was glued to their Big Bro. It has nudity.
      To clarify the guide issue. You can pull the guide up and its fully populated. Then you close it, and reopen the guide a second later and half the listings are gone. So the station sent the data, but it’s like the dvr player just lost some or all of it. Its wonky.

    Thank you for the informative video.
    I noticed some comments/questions about antennas. So...
    Out of curiosity I connected our TV to the Channel Master antenna that I mounted in the attic about 33 years ago. It picks up 174 channels.
    I'll be using less than 20 of them (due to most of them being foreign language, Home Shopping or just plane useless channels), but I thought it was worth pointing out that I'm getting PERFECT HD RECEPTION from an antenna that's OVER THIRTY years old. Just my 2¢! ☺
    ...Now to find the proper DVR...

      @VinceRocca  5 років тому +1

      Yeah. I’ve been corrected, the old VHF antennas do pick up HD channels. So thats cool. Currently I’m using an amazon firetv as a dvr. So far soooo good.

    Nice review, Vince, thank you. I'm looking at getting one of these for my parents, whose main screen is a 55" monitor; no tuner to pull in a signal. So when they lose their AT&T service, it's useless. This should let my dad watch the games when the cable goes out again.

      Yeah, its a tuner and dvr. But he’ll still need an antenna. I review an rca antenna, which I’m happy with. Check that out. And don’t forget to sub, share and like :) also, there is a newer version of this dvr on Amazon. I haven’t tried it but I’m guessing it’s better.

    • @Urugami45

      VinceRocca Understood, but I got an antenna for them already. That's how I found out it's a monitor and not aTV. I know there are other ATSC tuner boxes out there, but the price and capabilities of this thing are incredible. Might even get one for myself and record the remastered Star Treks they're showing locally on a subchannel. :)

I do see this channel on the epg clearly, but for some reason the power of that channel is too low for it to be recorded. i moved the antenna to various location and no luck, but all the other channels come just fine. It would have to be my #1 favorite channel it could not record.

    I wonder if you could hook it up to a networked hard drive or even a wireless hard drive. If you could, you could then plug in a 3TB wireless hard drive to the box then simply link to the hard drive wirelessly and watch your shows anywhere.

    • @VinceRocca
      @VinceRocca  5 років тому

      You probably could. But if you accidentally tried to watch the show it was currently recording and writing to the drive then the DVR might choke. Also, a note: I think this maxes at 2tb drives, so check that before trying a 3tb drive.

    Do you or anyone reading this know the difference between this model and the 150 by mediasonic? They seem to operate pretty much the same. I am happy with my 150 but, the tuner is not very good in that the signal has to be almost perfect to no get pixalation. I wrote to mediasonic and said I would happily pay more if they can fix that problem. You can't go wrong to be able to record without paying a monthly fee though.

    • @VinceRocca
      @VinceRocca  5 років тому

      I don’t know the difference. After a while I started to have some issues with this unit. It would miss recordings and some recordings would not playback. So I‘ve been using an Amazon Fire Recast for 8 months and it is awesome. No monthly fees, it never misses a show. Its program guide is like a tivo, where it records by show not by time. • @VinceRocca
      @VinceRocca  5 років тому +1

      The pixelization is probably due to antenna placement. HD has more data that SD, so an antenna off by a few degrees will probably show in the HD feed before the SD feed. But the pixelization you’re referring to could also be a glitch in the recording. You probably do still need the faster 3.0 to reliably record HD, Please subscribe so I can get to 100k subs.

      @@VinceRocca Thanks for the reply. I'll subscribe now. You answered one of my questions that I was wondering about. I heard from another user, they said the same thing but that also you don't need a splitter because the antenna signal goes through the tv. Meaning that if the box is set to channel 4, then on channel 4 of your tv you can watch and record, for example, channel 23. Then after that change the tv's channel from channel 4 to any other channel and watch a different program. So now while the dvr is displaying and recording channel 23 on output channel 4, on the tv you can be watching channel 69. I wonder if this is true. You don't have to answer this question, I know that you probably don't actively use this dvr. just mentioning it for other users to look into it. Thanks for the help.

      I think your drive is formatted fat32 which has a 4gb file limit or fat16 which has a 2gb limit. Reformat your drive using the mediasonic, or on a computer choose exfat or windows file system. If none of that works, try asking on the amazon product page. Good luck.

    Good video, Vince. Thanks for posting. I bought one of these back in June of 2016. I even posted a review: ua-cam.com/video/nxpBLYDEkfU/v-deo.html. Let me know what you think. Anyway, my reason for leaving this comment- one of the first things I noticed about mine was that it got very hot when turned on. It clearly had a heating problem. It was hot to the touch and from time to time I actually worried about whether or not I should unplug the thing when I left the apartment. Well, it finally died on me about a month ago. I've been considering replacing it, possibly with the same model (but have concerns that if my first one was a piece of crap maybe I shouldn't buy a second one). Did yours ever get hot, or exhibit any overheating problems? Now that you've had yours for a year what do you think of it? Still using it, or have you moved on to something else? Thanks... Joe
