You have just added 207 lbs of fuel and the weight of the tank (presumably heavy if it can take the beating of the trail), not to mention the clearance you've lost. I'll be very interested in the results of payoff vs sacrifice down the road and how you feel about it.
Cool and that's a lot of work. I have the LRA tundra 46 gal, one man install, did it on the driveway. Although mines not an aux tank so no need to plumb it to existing factory tank. @William Vagabond Rear diff is centered along the wheels/tires, so your tires give you extra clearance to clear the diff as you go up and over. Once you drop over, the additional clearance provided by the tires is gone. That's where you slam something in the rear...

Too much ground clearance loss! At the last bend toward the bottom, I would eliminate that portion which looks like it would gain (3 inches?) and still give you an extra (20 or so gallons?) which would still be a huge improvement over the stock capacity. Also, 33 gallons of extra fuel weighs about 200 pounds whereas 20 gallons would only weigh 120 pounds, that's a big difference when that weight is behind the rear axle. Since the original gas tank holds around 23 gallons an extra 20 gallons would increase capacity to 43 gallons. At 15 mpg the range would be 645 miles and at 19 mpg the range would be 817 miles. That's plenty of range.
It's always an option, you can even weld one to the tank before the first fill-up but the Aussies have been using these for years without skid plates. 12 gauge steel is tough to punch through. We'll test it and find out!

Nice! I have a mint 1988 4Runner. 4x4 exploring has been my hobby for the last 17 years. I can't do that mod unless I put on a huge rear bumper with spare tire like you have. Where you are putting that tank is where I have my factory stock spare tire. For 1st Gen 4Runner owners there is a gas tank mod that fits above your spare tire. But it does lower your ground clearance a little. I do have room to extend my stock gas tank forward a little longer. A cut and weld.

Very impressive by the information you gave!! thanks very much! by the way, do they do it on 2nd generation Sequoia?? or put tundra's 38 gas tank on Sequoia?
How much weight did the auxiliary tank (full of gas) add? Any significant reduction in acceleration or braking performance due to the increased weight?
We have a Tacoma, used to ride 38" tires on it, had a total fuel capacity of just over 58 gallons without any outside jerry cans. Use it for snow wheeling here. One issue we had was that it was attached to the frame without enough ability to flex with the frame, the attachment points then started to leak. Then we decided to go bigger and made modifications to fit 44" tires on it. Had to body lift it to fit the larger tires and cut into the body a bit. The body lift was just under 2 inches in total. This meant that we could fit a larger tank and also fix the leaking issue. Now we have just under 69 gallons of tank capacity and have fixed the fuel issue. Sometimes we use most of the fuel over a 3 or 4 day trip in the highlands, that is because of some very very deep snow and having to drive with lockers engaged, 2 or 3 psi in the tires and making full use of the extra transfer case for ultra low gearing. Other trips we return having only spent 40% of the total fuel brought with us because the snow is hard packed and a much easier trip over glaciers and in the highlands. Happy trails.
With larger than stock fuel tanks I'm always curious about how the vehicles distance to empty feature continues to function. But I suppose the transfer pump functionality (vs treating it like one large tank) makes that irrelevant
I can’t believe you’re only just putting in a long range fuel tank, that’s one of the first things aussie put into their 4wd if the going to be touring
Awesome video Kevin,,,,as usual. Now that you added 33 more gallons, you`ll be 198 pounds heavier with both tanks full, not including the weight of the new tank. That`s not too bad. Either way, i love the idea of having 2 tanks. I was reading the comments below, and i kinda agree with getting a skid plate for the new tank because you guys do rock crawling sometimes.
Great video. I have a Viaair twin compressor system where my spare used to be. If you don’t mind, where did you relocate your viaair system to? Thank you
I need to find a way to put 15-20 gallons more in my Danger Ranger, and still have room for air tank....18 gallons and a supercharger is no bueno. Sure, cans work, but... That's a damn nice setup, big though....good and bad.
I remember having an extra 150 liters tank in a f150. Gas stations would only go up to 120usd. I would need to fill one then close and again. Often I would need to use different credit cards because at least Amex would 'detect' fraud.

How much weight did the auxiliary tank (full of gas) add? Any significant reduction in acceleration or braking performance due to the increased weight?
Very nice video and editing. I love that upgrade especially 👌🏻
I saw in another video that the computers information on gas tank size had to be recalibrated
I can’t believe you’re only just putting in a long range fuel tank, that’s one of the first things aussie put into their 4wd if the going to be touring
_louisianna we got fuel stations everywhere
Is your 33 gallon tank a one off? I just looked on the Long Range America website and all I see for a 5th gen is a 24 gallon.
I have a gx and 4runner and I find neither very comfy daily or long overland trips. Do any overland vehicles ride comfy.
Great video. I have a Viaair twin compressor system where my spare used to be. If you don’t mind, where did you relocate your viaair system to? Thank you
What's the height frm the gas tank to the ground? Also wouldnt that create problems if you go off roading and go on rocks and what not?
It's higher than the axle. If I hit it, I'm having to much fun. We're going to find out either way 👍
@@LifestyleOverland true. May I ask what year n trim is your 4runner
I’m curious, could this be added/done to a first gen Toyota Sequoia by chance? I’ve got an 07, and would love something like this for the old tree.
I recently got myself a 4runner and was thinking of doing some modifications. I've been looking for a good rear bumper/spare tire setup and really love the look of the one in this video. Does anyone know what brand/model this one is?
Ward Harris is awesome. Great guy and a great company!. 2nd Feb Tacoma main tank install here.
10:20 Yeah I’m rethinking this upgrade now that gas is over $4.40 a gallon for 87 octane.
I’d go for a more shallow version of the tank to have peace of mind that I wouldn’t hit anything - even if it was only a 15 gallon vs 33.
That's an awesome mod, wish I could have it. But it looks bit too much cutting and welding to my taste.
Any thoughts on impacts to rear suspension? Almost 200 lbs is not insignificant.
The rear drops 1/2" from empty to 56 gallons full. Zero worries. It's the ONLY mod that gets lighter the more you drive. 😂
I have a 4runner and a rav4 and I'm really interested in having a larger gas tank...any ideas on how much would that cost for each vehicle?
How has the LRT holding up for you?..
Can't find the review after this premiered a year ago. Any follow up review?
Which model do you have? I don’t see anything for 5th Gens on their website. Do you know if they’ll offer a smaller, more flush fitting tank?
Nice, only reason I don't have this truck.
Interesting mod. Especially for preppers.
Excellent Drew Holcomb choice for the B-roll
do you loose ground clearance with it?
Nice!
If that's made for the LC 150 Prado - would that make it more of a bolt-on installation your new GX460?
Yep 👍
@@LifestyleOverland sweet!
Love the content guys!
Need an XL topographic bear hoody - any new stock coming in?
Nice job guys. Hey anyone planning over landing to OX west this year from NM?
Thanks! We will be there 👍
Question what upgrades to the suspension did you have to do ? And if you did none how does handle now ?.
Wait i see a dc110 go back to that also those guys got talent to do this install
AWESOME !!! Let's see how far you go. What was that about a catheter? Peace
What a great idea. Innovative
Roster it brings back memories of the RANCH . Roster
im looking at getting one for my 97 runner at 29 gls i can hold 47 gls with the 18.5 stock tank and go around 930 to 940 mls do thats what in guessing 930 to 940
Gas is currently $1.27 in central Tx
:) I have seen all your videos about Alaska trip, they are a lot of details in those, you might have done this before you go there. Anyways am surprised and inspired by your dedication and interest on these projects and visits... Keep going.... may I know wheel and tire specs and can they go on x5?
where can i get a similar head unit like that? (reporting time, temp, direction, and gas range) - i saw a forum last year that linked to someone making them, but it was removed. i'd love to instal one myself!
Now imagine if we had a diesel 4runner (hilux surf) in america to do this with, easy 1000+ mile range
