Torvus Bog Reimagined in the Unreal Engine

- Been working on this for a month and a half. There are still rooms and tons of assets that I need to make, but I couldn't resist sharing my progress on this.
Almost all 3d assets are made by me using tons of different programs. If theres interest I'll make a video showing how I created all this stuff.

I hope Nintendo remasters MP2 as well. If it could look similar to this, that would be a dream come true.
Prime 2 is so underrated it deserves one.
It will look like Prime 1 remastered ... a bit better graphics and in HD.... thats it ^^
@@venar4248 A "bit" better graphics? lol
According to a certain leak last year, Prime 1 is the only Remaster but 2 and 3 do exist for Switch
They need to give us online multiplayer too. Promise them it’ll be amazing. 4 player online deathmatch would be fun.
As a kid, I freaked the flip out when I entered the area for the first time and those two monsters waded out of the water like something out of a horror game!
@@Vode1234 Nice! I just bought a 3d printer not long ago.
@@Vode1234 You got a goddamn 3D printed Grenchler in your kitchen?!!! I'm envious as fuck rn, ngl.
Dude, the underwater parts and boss freaked me out the most!
@@Vode1234 dayum son. 🤣
I hated both the Grenchlers and the Sheegoths. Scared me to hell.
Dang, hearing the Torvus Bog music along with the beautiful rendition of this scenery and the sounds of rain and water is making me want to play trilogy MP2 again.
This was my favorite area in any Metroid game, the atmosphere is impeccable
Torvus Bog is a very close second to Skytown from Prime 3. The atmosphere and subtle storytelling is second to none
I always loved the aesthetic of samus holding her arm cannon like a submachine gun or something, firing from the hip majority of the time. Metroid fusion conveyed this really well and it's nice to see it in this demo.
Fun fact you may not know: In fusion, Samus is physically holding up the cannon, even while running, because her suit doesn't help support it or the recoil itself, this is due to her being in a weakened state from the x-parasite and Metroid DNA merging. In all other 2d games she holds the top of the cannon while stationary, or swings her left hand while running as opposed to holding it.
Samus is the goddess of planks, that’s why
Ah echoes. The great game whose reputation is overshadowed by it’s older brother. Deserves more recognition and I hope the remaster is as good as prime 1.
Would love to see Torvus Bog and Sanctuary Fortress remastered. Hopefully Nintendo shoots MP2 remaster. Up there in my top 5 favorite places in Metroid
This is amazing! Kinda weird that the doors open without being shot, though. Feels un-Metroid.
This reminds me a lot of that "Tallon IV Overworld Fan Art" video that floated around for a few years, only for the Remaster to come out and look really similar to it. I know it's easy to make "Hire this man Nintendo" jokes about these sortsa things- just fan recreations/imaginings in general- but in cases like these, it's really nice to see someone making assets from scratch rather than just relying on Unreal Engine's default capabilities. (Throwing an existing Mario model in and having it spit out a generic field with "realistic lighting" in place of an attempt at capturing a genuine art style.)
All this is to say, this looks INSANELY impressive, and REALLY makes me hope we get a Remaster that looks somewhat similar to this. I think you captured the look perfectly, and fan creations like these help me envision what that would look like, which gets me excited.
No accident there. I loved his work and it inspired me to learn a game engine..
Hey thank you for reviving this. MP players all learned to love going back n forth in those amazing environnements. The feeling stays with us
this was one of my favorite parts of the game together with the sanctuary , the soundtrack catches me emidiately
During the not so good times of my life, this is how I imagined Torvus Bog in my head with that masterpiece of a track playing in the background to calm myself down, and seeing it reimagined like this is awesome. Obviously there are few things that need more work, but I love the effort you put into recreating the bog. Here's hoping we also get a remaster for Prime 2 and 3 in the future!
Incredibly work. I really hope prime 2 gets a remaster so this can come to life!!❤
I love this 😊 that place was such a vibe
This is really awesome. The waterfalls anre a bit low res and the blastpod/living item containers weren’t quite moving the way I remember them, but otherwise this is fantastic and I’d love to play through it.
Yeah still haven't figured out how to import custom bone animations lol. The animations that are in there are all done with allembics
One of the greatest campaign missions of all time.
oh man, this is beautiful.. one day i hope
This looks so good, I could have been fooled into thinking this was an official remake. Kudos to you!
Prime 2 Remaster Hype! Some say it wont happen but if it does which believe it will I think it will be incredible maybe even just as awesome as Prime 1.
I really hope Prime 2 and 3 receive the same Remastered treatment as the first one!
It's great to see Torvus Bog remade! Torvus feels like a second home to me after how much time I spent there in my playthrough of Prime 2 so I love seeing it with better graphics!
The Warps in the Trees look a lot like Eyes with UE. Really adds a more Natural yet ominous Atmosphere to Torvus. I imagined the Shriekbat Ambush towards the Entrance (could be remembering wrong; been a while), the Grenchler Encounter, and the Dark Pirate Commando Squad Ambush at the Bridge, all in UE (could be thinking of a different Bridge).
Love the doors. Shooting to open them makes more sense if they function as more of a containment shield, than a physical door, with a shield over it. Just a thought.
Honestly, this goes to show you just how amazing Retro Studios is. This is running on what I would assume is a high end PC, and yet the Nintendo freaking Switch can put out visuals just like this.
Not putting you down, to be clear; this is awesome as hell. But this gives me INSANELY high hopes for a Metroid Prime 2 remaster.
Nice one. Looks awesome.
Chalk up another banger yet to come and man I cannot wait for it to become full reality. Man do I look forward to seeing this happen. If the monsters over at the big N give you any static...tell them to stop attacking their fans and get better business practices cause what you got going here...they should embrace instead of condeming!
Lordy I need to see the Light Suit in 4K lol
With how gorgeous MPR turned out, I hope Nintendo remasters Prime 2 with this same level of detail. A simple port just isn’t acceptable at this point.
absolutely amazing. im replaying MP2 rn and this is A1 Number 1
It’s sad epic doesn’t work on unreal anymore. Unreal 1998 was a really good game because it feels like epic merged Quake and Metroid together
This looks phenomenal.
I can’t wait for metorid prime 2 remaster to come out and people make comparison videos to your project and it
I found the underhanded grip on the arm canon to be an interesting touch
Looks like the default FPS character’s arm position. Hopefully down the line there’ll be an animation that puts the overhand grip in
Unfinished work, he also avoids water and doors open by walking by.
Can't believe this only has 2k views, the youtube algorithm gods have blessed me
Also, is there a download page? Maybe a github? I can understand why not, since nintendo is really weird about this stuff
I really really want to, but I dont want to stop on nintendoes shoes here. As long as its just a non interactive video it remains fanart. I'm thinking specifically of the nuclear themed pokemon game a few years back. I'd hate to loose the videos too because I shared the game
so far I've only shared the game files with friends/family.
@@Vode1234 What about an underground discord server?
Excellent proof of concept. Helps keep big companies like Nintendo in check. Yeah, we can do this too, and better than you if you cut corners too often and think no one will notice.
It looks good other than the freaky motion blur which is what most Unreal “renditions” struggle with. Makes it look super odd.
Prime 2 needed it more than Prime 1
While I am not a fan of the washed out colors and more oppressive feeling of the atmosphere. This looks great, its always very interesting to see another take on Prime's art style.
If only Nintendo would put Metroid on PC...it would actually look this good!!!!
This has always been my all-time favorite area in the Metroid Prime series. I remember as a kid after it'd been a while since I played, the image of Torvus Bog followed some other areas would pop into my head and I'd have to go back and play again. lol Those images have stuck with my since still too. I played the Prime games so much in 2002 to 2010, so many fond memories. No other game since has ever done exploration as well as the Prime series. There was always so much mystery and wonder, I miss that. Now-a-days if a game isn't bloody hard or multiplayer it isn't good. No one really cares about exploration, story, or any of those styles of gaming anymore. That showed in Metroid Dread. It's actually a bit depressing. lol
Imagine going through this in VR.
OH MY RA YOU TOOK PERFECTION AND MADE IT BETTER
This was clearly done with respect for the source material. Well done.
Unlike other "remasters". Looking at you, terrible unreal OoT videos.
the forest like ambience in the intro area is all the better, considering torvus was a forest before tsunamis wrecked it
We had the prime unreal engine demo which led to the remaster. Please let this be a good omen for Prime 2. Let’s hope it isn’t an HD port like the rumors say.
tbh I'd be ok with even just a native port to switch. Remastering it like the other is best tho. My main difference is I pictured the metroid universe as being more worn down and dirty compared to the switch port. Thats why i added the silver scratches to the gun and generally more grime.
The old graphics aged pretty well thanks to great shape language but maybe I'm cool with it because I'm old. I sometime like the jagged look of older games and in horror games the lack of anti aliasing.
Like the ps1 had limited poly counts but a lot of the time the triangles where used to point to the focal points on models in fun ways. For example if you take a screenshot in the torvus bog i and draw lines based on the crack placement in the rocks it would often point at the puzzle solutions. Really ingenious stuff like that.
I dunno about you guys but this is mainly my idea of Heaven.
The roughness makes the complete areas stand out even more. Your recreation is MUCH more faithful then any other unreal engine metroid I've seen, even that Tallon Canyon one (which, while pretty, took a few liberties on the foliage density)
Thanks so much.
I'm really glad that I got the style right so far. It was my primary goal after my first attempt on my channel.
I think its because the unreal engine provides a bunch of free photoscanned assets that have an instant button to add them to any project. Its extremely tempting to use them but they tend to overpower any art style in the game. if you want to see them just look at the megascans site and you'll recognize the modern AAA look instantly.
Its why I chose to sculpt and paint everything myself this time. It takes much much longer and there's less detail, but its worth it to capture metroid's cartoony shapes meets realistic textures design.
I really liked the tallon overworld remake too. He was very much going for that modern shiny texture style with color glow. I felt that fit the vibe quite well.
I do have a couple more rooms finished too. I'm just waiting to post them till the project is done.
@@Vode1234I definitely went overboard with texture shinyness and foliage haha. You did a much better job at sticking to the art style and general vibe, makes me wish I'd done a couple things differently! amazing work and I'm really flattered you liked my attempt!
Oh hey you responded! Thanks for that demo back in the day. I look forward to seeing whatever you're working on.
LOVED IT SO MUCHHHHHHHHHHHHH
This is amazing
Amazing and awesome all at once. Now imagine Metroid in third person in the same look as anthem....just let that simmer in your mind...
It is as good as the first Unreal game.
Incredible!
Dude imagine if Prime 4 looks like this... I would die.
You're forgetting it's running on handheld Nintendo hardware 😂
@@nossenkanter It's possible that Prime 4 will be on the switch's successor instead of the Switch, in which case this may not be too far off.
Prime 5 should look like this not Prime 4
That said i really like what we seen so far of Prime 4
@astraldog3359 About as good good as I could ask for a Switch game and THEN some.
Ngl I think I like the original more, but still good job
Dude I’ve been learning Unreal just so I can do the exact same thing lmao, Torvus Bog is my favorite location and I’m happy that you were able to give it justice!
You should do it anyways : D
Reinterpreting the old assets has given me even more respect for the original artists to the point where I'm going to replay it. There's so many hidden Egyptian symbols and stuff in the original designs its mind boggling.
There's something about the way that unreal renders shadows that just makes this seem... off. All the assets look good, but the lighting is a bit weird.
Ngl this is how it looked to me in 2004
*Hire this man*
god damn u are talented
It looks beautiful but is missing the Prime feel. Kinda like a CoD mod. Samus is holding her hand cannon like a gun and the physics aren’t right. It a beautiful mod though.
Torvus Bog is the best piece of video game OST and location I have seen. First You're in an arid wasteland and then you're suddenly in a swamp. Regardless, it's great too see it in a modern engine. Too bad Nintendo is too butt hurt about PC ports.
Doomtroid Prime 2: Echoes
Beautiful
excellent - are you using the multiscattering fog asset yet? wonder how it is
I just got ultra dynamic sky and the height fog is reversed. I'd also add fog cards and mountain cards if I made this again.
I noticed you didn't show the underwater parts. Do you not have convincing effects figured out yet? I was just wondering because the underwater sections as well as the transition back and forth between above and below water are always some of the coolest in all of the Metroid Prime games.
It wasnt done when I had recorded the video. The environment is done now however. I just haven't recorded a new video because half of it is basically the same so I havent figured out a good way to show it.
i'd love to see the process, looks awesome
I'm working on it for the next video. The areas I'm building are done I just got home from holiday.
This is AMAZING
NINTENDO NEEDS TO HIRE YOU
amazing work
I like it but I don't at the same time. idk why
Yo hire this person ASAP Nintendo
Hello! You think I could use this footage for a metroi prime 2 video Im making? All credits for you of course!
Sure go ahead!
Not too bad m8
So uh, how long are we thinking? Two more weeks? A month max? Any longer than that and I'd wonder if Nintendo is ever gonna send you a cease and desist.
@@Vode1234 fair enough but you never know with Nintendo. They care about this stuff way more than they should. What they did to the AM2R guy, while legal, was a travesty. At least he got a career elsewhere with his work.
how did you get that good with the 3d modelling my friend? awesome work
Around 2012 I used digital tutors, and then I went to school for 2 years to get a foundation for it in big pipelines and after that I went to fzd where I learned how to do it really messy for concept art.
This was before blender took off. These days I'd recommend ian huberts patreon and blender guru. They basically cover everything you need on the software side. On my making of torvus bog I included a list of the tutorials I used in the description too.
I'm kind of curious what it might look like to take the GBA metroid games into the 3D unity engine.
Radical redesigning for sure, but it's something I'm sure I'm not alone on in thinking a 3D translation would be an interesting project.
Are you making an entire unreal engine version of Metroid Prime? I don’t see anymore info on the YT profile. Wish to know more the updates and actual plans for this!
I'm just making some of the surface of torvus.
The goal of the project was to learn the unreal engine without having to also design a scene from scratch. Also the remastered hadnt come out and so I missed the old metroid games.
I might come back and add some interaction at some point, but I'm trying to start my own project.
@@Vode1234 right on I appreciate the reply. I’m happy and excited to see this! You did an amazing job and it’s really making an impact and impression on people 😎 thank you.
Amazing work.
新作はこのグラフィックで出るといいですね!!
I dunno man, I like what they did in the remaster then this.
looks good.
how come samus holding her arm cannon like most 1st person shooter holding a assault rifle?
This is my first big unreal project, so I used the default hand as to avoid having to learn unreal's animation system before getting this done.
I still feel its ok given that samus does that when she looks up and down on the gamecube version of the game and sometimes when firing in other games.
@@Vode1234 okay and i see why - asking why it look like that, no problems.
if you aim in the gamecube, samus holds it from the side, but it okay - doesn't really matters as long as samus is aiming.
I hope they HD Remaster this game someday.
Did you do it all by yourself?
@@Vode1234 nice have you Oculus quest?
Sick
Holy shittttttt 🤩🤩🤩🤩
Such a shame Nintendo will probably never put out a Metroid game that looks this good. Prime remastered is great, don't get me wrong, but if that's the best were getting graphically for Prime 4, I'll be disappointed. Hope they release a new console that will rival the X series and PS5 before they release Prime 4.
I honestly don't get how you could be disappointed if Prime 4 looked like the Remaster but ok
Are you able to play this on an emulator or is this just a render? I need this
This is an unreal project I used the default first person controls and built everything else from scratch. So its 'playable' there's just no enemies or stuff to do as I dont know how to build npcs yet. I recorded a couple walks I took in the level and cut it together.
Need metroid prime 2 remaster!!
Amazing. A shame we'll never get prime looking this good. At least we get the remaster.
Remaster looks better than this imo.
@@moondawwg well I mean it obviously doesn't, the remaster is limited to a switch. It looks great, but it's not unreal engine.
The waterfalls in the remake look better.
@You don't see an old man havin' a Twix It's a matter of art style, not graphics engine or resolution.
This looks bland and generic, like most other Unreal demos.
@@MoonstruckMelody lol. Its supposed to look realistic, and thats what it is. The remaster is beautiful, but not even close to this video.
Is kinda surprising how similar it looks to Doom.
Whats funny is I never played doom and so looked it up after all these people kept mentioning it. Yeah I can see it 100% accidental
I don't like the doors, the original ones look more futuristic 😊
🙏Manifesting MP2R🙏
same here. Praise Samus
doesn't work
god please nintendo. i beg of you.
turn off motion blur
Brruuhhhhhhh!
bruh...
I don't like the shield doors, the sound is very cheap. :(
Do you intend to remake the entire game?
Just a bunch of the torvus bog around 10 rooms in total. This project was to learn the unreal engine without having to make up my own designs at the same time.
I'm starting my own project once I'm done moving.
@@Vode1234 I like your art style - it feels dark and mysterious, in a way more dangerous than the original. It would stand on it's own regardless of how good Nintendo remakes the games. I'm looking forward to your future projects.
After Metroid: Echoes, I moved on to PS3 over Wii.
I got the 360 after the gamecube. Those were good times. Once journey came out I got a ps3 just for those exclusives.
Ngl looks unfinished, the doors and water effects (aside from the rain) look rlly strange specifically
Why is the water so bad compared to everything else
because the engine couldnt do it for him
Uhm frankly the reverse... I downloaded the water from a kit because I'm only one guy so the project was already really big for one person to do alone without burnout.
I sculpted and built the assets myself using, adobe medium, zbrush, speed tree, substance and maya.
@@Vode1234 you should sculpt deez nuts
