    Completely agree with such drives when you have a great car.. BUT! I would advise a few things.. 1. tire repair kit. Aka plugs and electric pump. 2. 5 to 10 gal portable gas. Just in case. 3.AAA membership (make this number 1) 4.toilet paper and or wipes. Just in case 5.never forget phone charging wires. Those 5 things are a must!!! Oh and *some* cash on hand $200 max.

    The reason Todd loves that Lotus is pretty much the same reason I love to ride motorcycles. Yes it's a compromise in a lot of ways and you make sacrifices when you choose it, especially with long trips, but there's absolutely nothing like the experience.

    • @DerSnipOr
      @DerSnipOr 7 місяців тому +3

      Exactly, sacrifice starts by getting into the car over these wide sills with the roof attached.
      Comparison with a motorcycle is spot on regarding practicability.
      The roads could be even narrower and twistier for that little lotus. For the c8 they are fine.

It was such a fantastic experience getting to drive to the base of a road a little bit and then getting to drive on said fun road. What Paul and Todd are saying is 1000% true. It's a little cruel to post this in the winter while Montana is getting slammed with the first snow and that pass is definitively closed for the season. But I'm putting a pin in it. That's a long drive in a Miata from Central WA, but maybe someday. It's too bad they don't keep these roads open, but only to sports cars on Blizzaks. Miata gets its first set of Blizzaks the day after tomorrow. I shall be unstoppable.

      One that I love that’s always within 30 min of me is the road up mt lemmon out of Tucson, just such a terrific road - though you do need to time it so late night/really early morning is the best time to not get stuck behind traffic

      @@GearHead_MediaI’ve always wondered what that road is like as a fun road. I grew up in Tucson and went to Boy Scout camp up there as a kid every year. Moved away before I owned a fun car so I never really got to experience it in the way we do for our shoots. Another fun one, albeit short and in a neighborhood is Roller Coaster Rd on the north end of town. It’s best going from the Oracle Rd side abs dropping down to La Canada.

    • @BobSchmidt
      @BobSchmidt 4 місяці тому +1

      @@aaronpuchalla5261 Sorry, I forgot to respond. So here is how it works. Most of the Driftless area is in Wisconsin. There are bits in IL, IA, and MN as well but I am not familiar with those areas so everything I will say applies to Wisconsin. The best areas are West and South of I-90 all the way to the mississippi river to the west, and Wisconsin Rt 18 to the south. The roads vary in curvyness depending on the road type. From least curvy to most: Interstates, US Routes, State Numbered Routes, County Single Letter Roads, County Double Letter Roads. the Biggest town in the area is LaCrosse which is a beautiful area. We stayed in Prarie Du Chien last year and that was great too. For a first drive, I suggest driving on Wisconsin 131 anywhere between Tomah and The Wisconsin River near Prarie Du Chien. When you see a Single or Double lettered county rd peel off in to one of the valleys, give it a try. to make the process easier, I use an app called Kurviger to help make a fun route. Here is one of my faviorite 1 day drives. kurv.gr/qqPLr. Gays Mills is a nice area and has a ton of apple orchards. There are a ton of winery's closer to the mississippi. And there are a ton of state parks dotted around the area. There is canoeing, kayaking, tubing on the kickapoo and mississippi. The house on the rock is always an interesting stop. This route was a two day trip. kurv.gr/StCK9. And the area is absolutely beautiful in the fall. I hope you get a chance to try it. I love it so much I plan on moving there to retire in a few years.

    I bought my dream car - an O5’ Lotus Elise in Aubergine Purple. It brings me so much joy to drive it. I love to give my kids rides in it and go find new roads. We call it, getting lost to find ourselves.
    Recently, my soon-to-be 16 year old daughter, who has her drivers permit, asked me if I would teach her to drive a manual in her favorite car - the Elise. What a beautiful moment. With some careful instruction, I’m proud to say that we did it with no harm to the clutch. I don’t know many folks who get to say that they learned to drive stick in a Lotus Elise 😂 🤙🏻. She was so proud - and I am so proud. Now, she and I can go discover new roads together.
    Enjoy the drive.

    Charles Kuralt, who knew about every road in the country, said Beartooth Highway was his favorite. I drove the Beartooth Highway a couple years ago in a new(3k mile) rental F-150 with the 2.7 ecoboost. Despite the fact that the Ford started hemorrhaging oil on the drive from Salt Lake to Yellowstone(5 quarts in 4 days), that road really brought out how light the front end of F-150 was with that powertrain. When I dropped it off in Bozeman, the rental company swapped it out for a Ram which I drove up to Glacier NP on the Going to the Sun Road. It felt like a Mack Truck compared to the Ford, but it didn't loose/use a drop of oil.

    The second day of owning my GR86 I spent the whole day driving B roads in South Australia and it was the greatest introduction to that car that I could have asked for.
    The roads you have driven your sports cars on are perfect for any drivers car and the smile on your faces says it all. Enjoy those beautiful cars as I'm enjoying my 86

    I’ve always heard Beartooth Pass is an epic road. Unfortunately my one time in the area, I took a different route in to Yellowstone. Back East, I always enjoy the Cherohala Skyway, hitting over the 5k feet between NC & TN with similar sweeping curves for 40 miles. It’s often looped with the Tail of the Dragon for different types of roads.

    I know what you mean when you take a road trip just to drive a road. Once I got my 2015 Mustang EB properly modified by Steeda, I first took a day to drive the roads within the North Georgia Mountains. Then I took a weekend to drive the Tail of the Dragon. I made sure I was prepared, including the rules of the road like pulling over to let motorcycles pass. Even the roads getting to and from the Tail were fun and provided beautiful views.

    I can see Todd’s synapse firing from all the stimulus and the fact he has his favourite car on this favourite road, and what a road. 100 miles of twists and turns and changes of landscape. Paul’s Cayman must be the intersection of these two cars?

  • @davidkaminski615
    @davidkaminski615 7 місяців тому +1

    Two things: First, this reminds me of the time when I finally got off the highway in Knoxville and drove The Tail of the Dragon in my Saturn SC2 5-speed. It was a scrappy little car, but I was so worth it!
    Second: I may not have my little sports car anymore, but I do get enjoyment finding muddy, rutted local roads in the Ozark region and attacking them with aplomb with my 4x4. Were those squeals from the back seat because of fear, surprise, fun? Dunno. Don't care. As long as there's no vomit, I ain't stopping!

    There are SO MANY great roads in the US; I now have another road trip destination!! Thanks for the inspiration! One question: how tight were the speed limits enforced? My experience at Tail of the Dragon was fairly dampened by a strong presence of law enforcement on the 35 mph speed limits. Now, in the Ozarks of northern Arkansas/southern Missouri? 👍👍👍

    for Europians, those wide roads in the middle of nowhere are just great - but there's one issue -> too slow - if You wanna drive legal. I saw 20miles speed limit that You were passing by., so its 32km/h. In Europe it will be 90km/h minimum - if there will be speed limit in sucha wild place - which is 3times faster. Germans raised up speed limit outside the urban areas to 100km/h, cause there's no need to go that slow for them. Elise is a great machine for that kind of adventure, im 6,3 and I was to buy 1gen boxster - but i couldn't fit -how U get into the lotus :) Guess new Corvette is awesome too. Still im jealous about those free spaces You got there Guys - great episode too!

    • @phattyhales
      @phattyhales 7 місяців тому +2

      Keep in mind those speed limits like the 20mph signs, are suggested speeds for the upcoming corner and not the actual speed limit of the road. The idea is to give a heads up to how sharp the curve is and to say that anything can safely make the next corner at (blank) speed.

    • @neilturner6749
      @neilturner6749 7 місяців тому

      @@phattyhalesyes many of us Europeans come to the US and think that the speed signs are actual legal limits - we’re not used to “advisory” signage like you guys have!

I own a Mercedes SLK300 (I know you guys didn't like it !!) but driving these twisty highways cannot be bettered - I went through Cody in May 2023 on my way to Hwy 50 across Nevada, and driving the State highways is so much more enjoyable than the "straight" Interstates.

Funny for me as, the Northern (US) Rockies are my 2024 long motorcycle tour including Beartooth...would have been 2023 except the late snowfall in the region had me pivot to doing the Northeast instead.
