Just because someone is playing a lot of things doesn't mean they're "overplaying." Todd's perfectly in the pocket and not distracting from the song. It takes skill to be as active a drummer as Todd and blend in with the band seamlessly.
@@jamesweldon9726 He's not peart but I hear what u guys are sayin !! he is awesome but not, if he can do the solo for temple of Syrinx , Im in on him!! We need good younger guys, my son is a awesome drummer, percussionist.
Some of the comments here are laughable ! Over playing?? I don't think so ! The man is adding so much flavor to the song ! He is an amazing talent and for me I simply cannot find one not one fault with his playing , he is flawless , I only wish I had half the talent ! Fun to watch and jaw dropping at the same time ...I have seen many drummers and this dude is simply the best I have ever seen !
yeah... you dont really want the studio version when you're going to a concert. you're hyped as hell and want pretty much as much insanity as possible while still sounding good
When people say it's overplaying, I don't think they get the concept of a classically trained drummer! Not only can Todd play it, he can also show you it on paper! My new favorite drummer, Sucherman! Incredible!
I know a local band mates of mine anyway they had a drummer who in the word of there bassist overplayed to songs ! I thought the band was fantastic with that drummer but after the bassist told the drummer to just play basic beats he walked off stage and left them , there replayed him with a beat master , I liked them before but not so much after , anyway Todd's amazing simple as like you say
@@MalcaratMartinezheirs lots of great drummers out there like this. Carter Beauford, Marco Minnenmann , among other amazing elite drummers. Obviously Todd is up there, he has no gaps in his playing, fills in the gaps with his hi hat opening and closing constantly and great dynamics. His foot is super strong on the kick bass, Rim shot on the snare is elite, and his chops are smooth and never builds like an amateur. The other two drummers I mentioned do all that as well, that’s what separates the super stars from the average. My younger brother drums and he’s learning all that, hopefully he becomes an elite drummer and I believe he will 🤗
This man is a machine!! Simply amazing and so stunning to watch. As a drummer..I didn't know this song was so technical and free like this!😉😉 that ride pattern is sick.
Its not that technical of a song! But he's adding so much it just works. Its not over playing, but there IS more going on than the (( original)) version. I like both ways.....
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer I would disagree. Todd has a great mix of technique and "feel". While Thomas Lang is superior in terms of technicality, he is a bit of a robot, and can't groove for 10 seconds without doing some insane chops over it. Which is why you can't really compare the two. Todd is great at what he does, being a drummer for a band and playing what is needed, while Lang is more of a one man solo machine, in a constant "betcha can't play this" type of vibe
Always impresses me ..anyone that can rock hard using traditional grip. Thinking about playing rock like that.....especially the left hand... makes me wince in pain thinking about it.
100% bro. I played hard (often too hard) my whole career. I could never figure out how dudes like Todd can generate that kind of power playing trad grip. Nope. Always felt like throwing a football left handed. Lol.
Pocket...Pocket... POCKET....How many times do I have to remind Todd "For gosh sakes son, stay in the pocket, willya'???" Yeah right. He fills musically and in a millisecond is right back ON IT.. So Good. Thanks for sharing this!
I used to like Styx, although not one of my favorite bands of the '70s. With Todd drumming, I am really liking Styx so much more. The Groove, or Beat or the feel (or whatever you want to call it) just adds so much to the sound.
I'm a drummer since childhood and believe it or not,...I had never heard of Todd until recently because I didn't care for Styx. But since I listened to a video and heard Todd play I was very pleasantly surprised and impressed with his playing. He's very very good, tasteful and SOLID. He's musical and plays WITH and for the music not just bashing around to show off. Solid and tasteful, musical. That's what it should be.
especially cause i dont know how you can get such a powerful left hand hit using traditional... todd and stewart copeland really amaze me in that way..
It’s easy, actually - it’s a combination of harnessing strength with your fingers and forearm. You’d really have to be pretty well versed (read: comfortable, as in second nature) with traditional grip to isolate those areas to get more power from your left hand. As with anything new, it takes a while to master, but once you get it, you’ll see that it’s really easy. This kind of stuff, technique wise, is attainable; most people don’t want to really put in the long work to accomplish things.
Just killing it. I wasn’t interested in seeing Styx live until I saw some of Todd’s playing videos. This is a master class in proficient rock drumming.
Todd is completely in the pocket. His additions to the songs give them new life. In fact, his playing elevates a lot of these old tunes and lifts them to their full potential.
Todd plays with such power and precision all while making it look like just another day at the office. I’d love to hear the front-of-house sound of his kit from the board.
I love how he adds life to the original...its not 'overplaying' more creativity in the mix of the presentation of the song! Wow. I LOVE THESE videos. In the 70s 80s 90s we didn't get the breakdown of the music. So awesome. THANKS!!
First time we seen todd in concert with styx. We were blown away. They couldn't have found a more perfect drummer for the band. He really put them on the top shelf for live performances.
Todd is the most fluid and talented percussionist i have ever seen. This isn't just being fast. It's like getting all 31 flavors at once. And he does it almost effortlessly. He took styx to greatest heights that could ever be achieved by the band. I never get bored or envious watching him. I get inspired.
Yup the best drummer i have ever seen ! This is mastery of an instrument ! Who could possibly say otherwise? And I'm loving that traditional grip ! Your am inspiration todd !!
I don't care what you say about overplaying or whatever, this guy is BADASS! I think his flash spots are well placed in that tune. He's also a great example for what can be done with the orthodox grip too.
I love watching Todd, his groove his timing is so f-ing awesome!!!!! (and no he is not overplaying. if he was recording I'm sure a few notes might be left out, but not that many). Styx is so lucky to have him on the kit. Just watch the band member watch him! They love it!
The meat of what John Panozzo played on those tracks is there, Todd just added his own spices. Todd is fun and educating to watch and that's a rare combination regardless of the platform. If you're not motivated to become a better drummer just from watching him, maybe drums are not your calling. You can learn a lot from watching, but if you do not apply it, it becomes stale. I know he makes me jump on the kit when I am done watching him because he motivates. Watch Styx-Return To Paradise 1997, especially at the 1:26:27 mark, make sure you're sitting down. I think of Jack Nicholson's line in Batman,"where does he get those wonderful toys." Thanks Todd for pushing me beyond the uncertain because that is where growth lies.
I don't often just outright gush, but MAN O MAN, Todd is fucking phenominal. This guy's drumming give STYX a whole new life --- like Styx 2.0.----- I AM Blown away!
Phenomenal! I know some talk about overplaying but I don’t find it distracting. In fact, I’ve always felt his precise hits, riffs and pieces add a dimension to the rock of Styx that makes the songs classic. And I’m mesmerized at his ability. I listen for every beat.

100% agree. He is freeking KILLING it!!!

Will Smith yes Todd Sucherman is phenomenally talented!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Todd brings Styx to a whole new level. He's so fluid. Unbelievable!!
I have been a Peart fan for 30+ years....i think i have a new i drummer to follow...Simply amazing.
Same here, being depressed Peart has retired I recently stumbled on to Todd and got Styx's new album, they are really killing it right now.

He's what Mike Portnoy *could* have been if he never stopped practicing and just relied on his 5 fills that he does on literally every song.
