  • We love our dogs, but sometimes how they react to situations can surprise us. That is until we understand the 6 behavioral reactions. Training dogs with varying degrees of defensive behavioral reaction. Dogs from this group can include excessively aggressive, moderately aggressive, aggressive, aggressive-cowardly, non-aggressive dogs with an orienting or food behavioral reaction. Moderately aggressive dogs with an active-defensive reaction are trained using the general methodology with the mechanical or contrastive method. The supervisor establishes the number of pairings and the exercise regime for each session depending on the training technique and the stage of skill development. Sessions for developing aggression or detaining an individual are conducted 1-2 times per week. Work on following a scent trail is conducted without prior agitation. If the dog's energy level eases during its work on following a scent trail. the number of exercises on developing aggression is increased. Excessively aggressive dogs are trained using a special methodology. They are assigned to bold and proactive trainers. Initial training is conducted with few distracting stimuli and without the presence of strangers nearby. Sometimes during the first sessions it becomes necessary to muzzle the dog and avoid using strong and painful stimuli. After contact is established and the conditioned suppression reflex developed, training can proceed according to the general methodology. This kind of training requires a well-balanced, calm, and bold treatment of the dog. Sessions involving the detainment of a fleeing assistant are conducted 1-2 times per month. The dog is trained to hold the person before aggression is taught, and before he learns to detain the individual. Then all the skills are practiced together. Very vicious dogs that are easily excitable are trained to follow a scent without prior agitation and without distracting stimuli. It is categorically prohibited to put these dogs on a scent trail with prior agitation. Otherwise, they will tend to look up and will not try to find the scent trail with their nose. In the future it will be impossible to inhibit these undesirable associations. With lengthy and scrupulous training, their behavior becomes more balanced by the end of the third phase, and subsequent training is conducted using normal methods. Excessively aggressive dogs, as a rule, do not work as well as moderately aggressive dogs: they become distracted when following a trail, searching an area, and are not precise in selecting objects and people. They are used most often as guard and sentry dogs. Dogs with a dominant passive-defensive reaction are trained using the food reward-based or contrastive method. For certain techniques the imitative method can also be used. The main goal of any method is to overcome timidity, cowardice, develop intensity and courage. Most often this can be accomplished when working with specialized techniques. Intensity can be developed in young dogs during basic obedience training. It is not advisable to accept older dogs with passive-defensive reactions for training. Training dogs with a dominant food reaction. The food reward-based method should be used to develop initial conditioned reflexes in each individual case. Sessions should be conducted when the dog is slightly or very hungry. Treats are given in small pieces both to excite and to reward successful completion of an action. At first all successfully completed actions are reinforced. Then, as the conditioned reflex is strengthened, only some actions which the dog performs especially well without error are reinforced. Food stimuli are used mainly to develop general obedience skills. Other methods are not excluded from use when training dogs with a dominant food reaction: mechanical, contrastive, and imitative methods. Sometimes food and treats are used with dogs of this group to develop initial aggression and to teach to follow a scent train. However, subsequent reflex reinforcement is conducted using the contrastive method. By the end of the training course the active-defensive reaction will begin to dominate in most dogs. Training dogs with a dominant orienting reaction. We will use the imitative training method for these dogs. In response to distracting stimuli, extinction inhibition is developed through gradual habituation to the stimuli during training sessions. Training for these dogs begins in a closed area with a minimum of distracting stimuli. Initial conditioned reflexes are developed at the same familiar sites. Changes in the environment and the introduction of complex nuances in a particular technique can be made only after the formation of a stable reflex under identical conditions. Dogs with a moderately exhibited orienting reflex quickly form conditioned reflexes for following a scent trail, selection of objects, people; and odor differentiation.

Love this video! I think this topic needs to be discussed more. I assume this is the a minimum you recommend. Seems a couple reps of this would be better.
