I’m looking at future proofing my build to a certain extent, so I’m about to pull the trigger but wanted your opinion to see how long this type of build would last knowing how intel is taking so long to get to 7nm chips.
Looking at the 5950X with a 3090 (potential future sli), x2 1tb 980 evo (they haven’t got the 2tb 980’s yet for preorder so should I wait for them too?)

Asking for some advice if you dont mind. I need to change my Gaming PC, its a bit of an old Gaming Labtop (bought it when I travelled a lot) that is falling a part and giving me issues now, so I HAVE TO change my PC.
I have all the components decided. However getting a 3080 was imposible so I will try to get a 3070 but lets see how that goes.
If I fail to get one, (and taking into account I really need a new PC), would it make sense to get something like a 1660 Ti, and just hold that while I manage to get a 3080/70 later during the year?
I have a 1440p screen.
I understand that would be less FPS, but at least it will be a PC.

Holy shi- that's a massive bottleneck CPU.
The RTX 3070 requires a 9th gen i5 or higher to maximize it's benefits.

If you’re getting an i5 I would look at 10th gen or 11th gen. The 9th gen intel cpus do not have hyperthreading. If you do not know what that is I suggest you watch a few videos about it. If you’re restricted to 9th gen I would get the i7 because it has 8cores/8threads instead of the 6cores/6threads on the 9600k. That’s more “brain room” for your cpu to use. The reason ryzen processors are so popular is because they all have mili threading so their 8 core processors have 16 threads. When you watch cpu benchmarks, also look at the cpu usage in % bc the intel cards use 80-90% of the cpu when gaming sometimes. That’s not good because you will run into cpu bottlenecks in the short future.

im really confused, can someone please explain? like why is there less performance at lower resolutions? should the hardware be able to handle it no problem at all?
At higher resolutions the GPU is used more. At lower resolutions the CPU is used more. The CPU is bottlenecking the preformance and thus causing less preformance. The GPU can handle the higher resolution as well as giving the CPU less work.

For a 3070 the 9600k may be a bottleneck, even last gen 20 series showed that in some games like battlefield v where it was limited. I’d try to get a 10600 orc11600k, possibly 5600x or 5800x with a 3070 if you can

Better than me, I have an x570 with a 2600x on it for my nephew... granted that's only because it was out of return period and when I got it for my 3700x it was the only x570 that was affordable around $180 in stock (right after covid happened), I now have a nicer B550 board that cost the same amount but has many more features believe it or not, but hey, least I can upgrade my nephews CPU to my 3700x if I switch to 5800x for myself.

i ordered a ryzen 5 5600x for my rtx 3070, is it enough?, it hasn't arrive, so to those who have build like mine, how's your experience with it?
Its enough if the game is decently optimized. But in cyberpunk i see some drops, not much, sometimes to the low 50s, i would need to test it with other games to see if it is a cpu bottleneck or just CDPR shitty optimization.
I have a newish build with i5 10600K. The only item from the original PC is the GTX 1080 which I intend to replace with a 3070 or even 3080 for gaming on my 3440x1440 UW monitor. The 1080 is still doing great but I'll change next year once we've seen all the cards and they are available. I want it to last at least as long as the 4 years the 1080 has.

I wonder if this advice will still hold when people are actually able to get their hands on a 3070 or will there be better options. Since Nvidia made such a mess of the launch that could be January or February 2021. That's the case for the 3080 and the 3070 is usually a more popular model.

Most games only use 1 core and benefit from faster Ghz. That's why Intel is still on top for gaming. However newer games will hopefully start to benefit from more cores, but that solely depends on the development. For now you shouldn't be concerned about how many cores there are in your cpu if you want more fps, unless you want to work (rendering, editing, programming,..). Although, it might be a future proof decision. Here's my advice: don't buy anything for your 3070 as long as you don't have a 3070, and wait for the benchmarks so that you can judge for yourself what is best for yourself
I will temporarily have a 1700x OC'd to 4.0 Ghz until the 5000 series comes out with my 3070. I think it will be decent-ish.

Yes just type your motherboard into google with compatible CPU’s and go to pcpartpicker and it will show you a list of compatible cpus.

At 1440p resolution the 3060ti is probably the best combo. On 1080p you need a gpu thats about 30% slower then the 3060 ti

On 1440p its a great match. Make sure you use good ram and a oc the 9700k would definitely help to get the maby 5% cpu bottleneck you might get in some games. To be honest the 3070 probably the perfect match if you dont oc
