i found your podcast a few days ago and i’m absolutely SHOCKED your audience is as small as it is! Based on the production quality, content, and the research and effort you both put behind each episode I thought you had millions of followers! Congratulations on your efforts, im telling all my friends about this show!
My Aunt Jane and her partner “Tootie” met when playing softball in 1948 in Fox Park in St. Louis MO. and were together until separated by death. Their stories about being lesbian in the 1950’s were fabulous!
@@QueerCollective truly. Aunt Jane & Tootie were very closeted, butch/femme dynamic, their bedroom was set up with twin beds (like a mid century sitcom), and I never realized they were lesbian until I came out to my parents. I miss them. I have a suspicion my Aunt Jane might have been on the trans spectrum as she preferred to be called Lee, did all the masculine stuff (sports woodworking, fishing, lawn work, etc) and hated bras. Aunt Jane would hire women to custom make some kind of bra like contraption. Maybe it was a rudimentary binder.🤷🏻♂️
Wow amazing! If only We could go back in time and ask our queer elders questions about the details of what it was like growing up without the acceptance and tools and technologies of today. Thank you for sharing!
Appreciate the video! This is not an "entire" history, though. This goes over many issues in Western lesbian history, true, and this part is great. But it leaves out much of Indian, east Asian, south east Asian, every part of Africa and South America, Polynesian and Eastern European lesbian history. We often consider all of history to be just Western, or only through a Western lense. So the title is a bit misleading! Thanks, as always, for the research and the great video ❤ Also, would appreciate deletion of the hate speech in the comments!
Wow! Thank you for sharing such an important part of our history! I learned so much! I'm Puerto Rican and in school they barely talked about our Taino culture, I didn't even know how inclusive it was. Growing up I would hear how unnatural homosexuality was but in reality our culture was so accepting and inclusive!
Thanks so much for listening! I (Karbon) was also taught that homosexuality was bad and the culture of Colombia, at least at the time, heavily discriminated against queer people. Makes me sad to know the pre-colonial culture was so inclusive but it’s also why we have to advocate for more inclusivity in cultures outside of the western world.
“girls all night long might sing of the love between you and the bride with violets in her lap And the beautiful dew is poured out and roses bloom and frail chervil and flowering sweetclover.” -Sappho
Thank you! Great presentation and ancient history will bring forth a lot of history and more truth...they knew what they were doing and if anyone ever gets the opportunity to go to the Island of Lesbos...do it! It is beautiful and the feeling of just being there is awesome! Keep up the good work!
For all the UK 🇬🇧 watchers, no there is not an ice cream van outside 😂. Got up twice to check because I heard what sounded like an ice cream van sound 🤣🤣🤣🤦🏼♀️

Lesbians have Evolved through out history even when straight people tried to stop Lesbians. I am glad Lesbians Evolved and have thrived to the best of their abilities. I love Lesbians ❤️ 😊.
I have a podcast suggestion: 'history is gay' they explore this topic in more depth if you want to find more queer people in history all around the world they have at least 6 different episodes about lesbians and both of the hosts are queer historians
Just watched this now and cried of happiness cus finally some taíno queer representation even if it's just a UA-cam video every single lil thing matter
It would be interesting to hear the history of the trans community. From trans mascs, femmes, and how the nonbinary community falls under the trans umbrella. I'm not completely knowledgeable so that's not in all inclusive list
There are a ton of trans creators who do this! Search for "transgender history". Unfortunately, a lot has been destroyed, and much is oral. Chase Ross has a bunch of good info, too. Kat Blaque, Contrapoints and Philosophytube are incredible trans creators that discuss modern and historic trans issues in their
We were unchurched and I explored different religions, and discovered the Goddess when Z Budapest came to the Boston Spirituality conference. Resurgence of the goddess will save women.
Theres a real reason to start questioning why we still teach patriarchal mysognistic religion that keeps threatening our society that has a short memory of the atrocities caused by it being in politics and stil makes life a living hell for women and gay men around the world . We should be making the religion atkeast reform to modern day if not get rid entirely.
Have you ever heard the story from the 10th century Book of Leinster where an Irish woman got pregnant from another woman because said woman had intercourse with a man just before? Happened to my cousin last week
The word “queer” is loaded with discrimination and violence. It cannot be reclaimed. There is no such “non-binary.” Having said that, I appreciate your looking back in history. Sappho composed poetry ~600 BCE.
I wish I could agree with you except for one thing. If we can reclaim the Pink Triangle from Post Wienmar Germany, specially the Nazi Party then there is no way Queer is off the table.
so is the word 'gay' for many gen z people. it's useful to have a non-cluncky umbrella term for everyone. Your opinion on non-binary has no power or relevance , they exist regardless of what you think
"Queer" has already been reclaimed. If you don't want to use it, that's fine. Non binary people exist. Indigenous cultures (including pre-judeo-Christian white cultures) all included multiple genders for millennia. It was only with the advent of those religions that we see a strict enforcement of just two categories.
YOU cannot reclaim it. But others can, because they haven't limited themselves to defining themselves by others perspective of them, or language. Non-binary is a new term, and therefore it does exist.
@celisewillis I do understand what you meant by religious but don't get it twisted. It was not just religion. With there being many different faults with some practices of historical Paganism at least there was a concept of balancing the masculine and feminine. They just had different Gender Norms for the time. Also those in between always existed but the term "non-binary" is a newer term. They were in essence a completely different gender that was the in between gender.
Why did you want to change? A thought-provoking question for you - were you a lesbian because you liked women? Because of comphet? Are you straight now or bisexual? Curious to know the story behind it
@18:20 President James Buchanan was also said to be gay. Yes, Lincoln had a wife. His wife was actually a slave owner and her name was Mary Todd Lincoln.
@20:40 The US feminist movement was ALWAYS focused on upper class white women's issues -- it didn't start in the 20th century. Even Sojourner Truth (ex. Ain't I a Woman? delivered at the 1851 Women's Convention, Akron, Ohio) had to tell them about themselves.
Literally the perfect video for this lesbian that finally realized she's a full blown lesbian and not bi

YAYYYYY THANK U 💕
my best friend and i started writing letters to one another to “do it for the lesbian history”

explore religion please. Explore Christianity with a Christian mystic who is fully affirming...
Would you cover how being gay impacts gender expression? Like being comfortable dressing femme for the female gaze and not the male gaze
