I have a spotlight installed on my 2003 ford crown Victoria and the light head will not rotate either with the handle or by hand from outside the vehicle. It used to rotate when I got it but one day it was really hard to move and I think something may have broken. I’ve checked and replaced the handle and it’s fine so what part needs to be replaced?

Yes we do. We have three different LED options that are all available for the Crown Victoria. Standard LED, our new X-LED and our smaller 5" LED Since this is not a PI we have two different mounting locations that use different parts. The PI uses the inside post application and we also have the door mount installation. Door mount is much easier install but the light will move when the door does. Inside post is more professional but requires extra steps and cutting a notch in the door. If the vehicle already had a spotlight installed you would just get the correct light for the existing hole. My concern is the inside handle is so long. I plan to install in a Jeep JK Wrangler 2 dr. This isn't a Crown Vic, I need a very short shaft, I still need to steer the Jeep. Those handle look a inch or two from the steering wheel. How about a super short post handle?
For 2017-1996 Jeep Wranglers a spotlight with a V length shaft is used and is mounted with a 12 installation kit for driver side mount and 12RH installation kit for passenger side mount. This is 1.5 inches shorter than the spotlight used on the crown victoria. Position of light handle to the wheel is not just controlled by shaft but how the light is mounted through the vehicle. For the crown victoria we had to make a special mounting setup with the bracket inside of the vehicle and a notch cut into the door to make it fit. For the jeep the light is mounted normally on the post. The goal our of engineers when developing applications is to keep the handle safely away from steering wheel. The whole “keeping the drill level “is very confusing. My bracket for a Toyota Tacoma is angled downwards 20 degrees thus it’s impossible to have the drill level. Does unity mean keep the drillbit parallel to the bracket? I have managed to drill through the outer sheet metal with a brand new half-inch drill bit but I warn you it’s not for the faint of heart. The flute of the drill bit will snag on the Sheet Metal (yes I was going at a very slow speed with a heavy duty drill) and on the bracket forcing the bracket upwards and possibly bending the sheet-metal of your vehicle. I have tried for several hours even machining bushings for a 1/8 inch drill bit and 3/16 inch drill bit to try to make a pilot hole for the half-inch bit to go through. It is not working because of the angle of the a pillar of my truck. I was just forced basically to buy the $132 drillbit from unity in hopes that I will be able to install my spotlight. Also I advise anybody attempting this to use rivet nuts and machine screws to attach the bracket to your vehicle if they can get them instead of the sheet metal screws that unity provides. Because as I mentioned above if the drill bit snags it’ll rip the sheet metal screws out of the holes of the sheet metal forcing you did you do some repair work that you didn’t want to do. If your bracket is pretty level and it’s a straight shot I’m sure that should be no problem but if your bracket is angled downward I’d be very careful.

Sorry we didn't see this sooner, just realized youtube was sending alert emails to the wrong email. The way our lights mount and how handles attach to the light has been the same for the whole life of model S6 spotlights, which began production in 1948 and are still currently in production. Current spotlights also mount same and attach handles the same way. In that way you should be fine. My only concern is that length of the shaft does matter for specific vehicles, too short or too long can cause issues with function. Also some modern vehicles due to internal parts inside of a post getting more complicated (air bags, speakers, etc) do need custom fit shafts designed specifically for that vehicle.

2001 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2001 Ford Crown Victoria use the same spotlights and installation kits. There are two different applications though for both vehicles that use different parts: Door mount and inside post. Door mount goes solely through the door frame and inside post mounts with the bracket on the inside of the vehicle comes through the post and needs a notch in the door frame. Inside post in more commonly used on police vehicles. If the spotlight was from the inside post version those lights are also sided. Driver side light does not mount correctly on passenger side and passenger side light does not mount correctly on driver side. Lights also need installation kits, I don't know if one came with your light or not. Inside Post driver side uses a 5556 installation kit (233L bracket) and 5557 installation kit on passenger side (233R bracket). Door uses a 232 installation kit for driver side and 232RH installation kit for passenger side.

If you correctly follow the instructions and use mounting template included there shouldn't be any issue. The installation kits for the lights come with a mounting template specific to the vehicle. Using the template, you locate the location on the A-pillar where our engineers have determined in safe to drill through. The bracket is then mounted in template location. Inside of the vehicle, on the handle of the light used to move it, there is a toggle switch on the handle that is used to turn the light on and off. Possible issues if this does not work is the bulb is burned out and needs to be replaced, or if this is a retired police car, sometimes when preparing them for sale departments may have disconnected the light from the power source.

Unfortunately no. Our application engineers determined that on a 2007 Mercury Milan a spotlight would interfere with deployment of side air curtain. Unity approved applications should not interfere with deployment of air bags. If we find that there would be any interference with deployment of air bags we try different mounting location. If we still cannot find a safe and functional location, we do not publish an application for the vehicle. For instance we do not have a spotlight application for the current model of Chevrolet Colorado/ GMC Canyon due to interference with side air curtain.
How about a shorter Shaft? The Jeep Wrangler has a very small cabin. That Shaft is very long, that shaft is right in your face. How can I buy a shorter shaft?
We have around 80 different shaft options and 17 standard shaft lengths. Not knowing what shaft you have or what year of Wrangler makes it hard to give you a good answer. I'm going to make some guesses, if anything is wrong the info may be different, let me know and I will give you correct info. I am going to guess this is a 2018-1997 Jeep Wrangler. For that, we recommend a V length spotlight shaft mounted with a 12 installation kit for driver side or 12RH for passenger side. Without knowing shaft length can't tell you if that is shorter or not than what you have. If you bought a light second hand from somewhere like ebay, most of those lights tend to be Crown Victoria spotlights. Those lights use a very specific shaft designed only for Ford Crown Victoria (and vehicles of the same base frame) The shaft is 1 1/2" longer than the V used for the Wrangler. So the V would be shorter than that light. We are also starting to see more Explorer and Taurus lights from similar sources. Those lights are 3" and 6 1/2" longer. Shaft of a spotlight can be switched out. Replacement V shaft is 3615-V-45. Since this is not a PI we have two different mounting locations that use different parts. The PI uses the inside post application and we also have the door mount installation. Door mount is much easier install but the light will move when the door does. Inside post is more professional but requires extra steps and cutting a notch in the door. If the vehicle already had a spotlight installed you would just get the correct light for the existing hole.

Going to put one on my 67 Buick Special
My concern is the inside handle is so long. I plan to install in a Jeep JK Wrangler 2 dr. This isn't a Crown Vic, I need a very short shaft, I still need to steer the Jeep. Those handle look a inch or two from the steering wheel. How about a super short post handle?
For 2017-1996 Jeep Wranglers a spotlight with a V length shaft is used and is mounted with a 12 installation kit for driver side mount and 12RH installation kit for passenger side mount. This is 1.5 inches shorter than the spotlight used on the crown victoria. Position of light handle to the wheel is not just controlled by shaft but how the light is mounted through the vehicle. For the crown victoria we had to make a special mounting setup with the bracket inside of the vehicle and a notch cut into the door to make it fit. For the jeep the light is mounted normally on the post. The goal our of engineers when developing applications is to keep the handle safely away from steering wheel. Also we now have handles with shorter grips available.

The whole “keeping the drill level “is very confusing. My bracket for a Toyota Tacoma is angled downwards 20 degrees thus it’s impossible to have the drill level. Does unity mean keep the drillbit parallel to the bracket? I have managed to drill through the outer sheet metal with a brand new half-inch drill bit but I warn you it’s not for the faint of heart. The flute of the drill bit will snag on the Sheet Metal (yes I was going at a very slow speed with a heavy duty drill) and on the bracket forcing the bracket upwards and possibly bending the sheet-metal of your vehicle. I have tried for several hours even machining bushings for a 1/8 inch drill bit and 3/16 inch drill bit to try to make a pilot hole for the half-inch bit to go through. It is not working because of the angle of the a pillar of my truck. I was just forced basically to buy the $132 drillbit from unity in hopes that I will be able to install my spotlight. Also I advise anybody attempting this to use rivet nuts and machine screws to attach the bracket to your vehicle if they can get them instead of the sheet metal screws that unity provides. Because as I mentioned above if the drill bit snags it’ll rip the sheet metal screws out of the holes of the sheet metal forcing you did you do some repair work that you didn’t want to do. If your bracket is pretty level and it’s a straight shot I’m sure that should be no problem but if your bracket is angled downward I’d be very careful.

Sorry we didn't see this sooner, just realized youtube was sending alert emails to the wrong email. The way our lights mount and how handles attach to the light has been the same for the whole life of model S6 spotlights, which began production in 1948 and are still currently in production. Current spotlights also mount same and attach handles the same way. In that way you should be fine. My only concern is that length of the shaft does matter for specific vehicles, too short or too long can cause issues with function. Also some modern vehicles due to internal parts inside of a post getting more complicated (air bags, speakers, etc) do need custom fit shafts designed specifically for that vehicle.

2001 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2001 Ford Crown Victoria use the same spotlights and installation kits. There are two different applications though for both vehicles that use different parts: Door mount and inside post.
Door mount goes solely through the door frame and inside post mounts with the bracket on the inside of the vehicle comes through the post and needs a notch in the door frame. Inside post in more commonly used on police vehicles.
If the spotlight was from the inside post version those lights are also sided. Driver side light does not mount correctly on passenger side and passenger side light does not mount correctly on driver side.
Lights also need installation kits, I don't know if one came with your light or not. Inside Post driver side uses a 5556 installation kit (233L bracket) and 5557 installation kit on passenger side (233R bracket).
Door uses a 232 installation kit for driver side and 232RH installation kit for passenger side.

If you correctly follow the instructions and use mounting template included there shouldn't be any issue. The installation kits for the lights come with a mounting template specific to the vehicle. Using the template, you locate the location on the A-pillar where our engineers have determined in safe to drill through. The bracket is then mounted in template location. Once the bracket is secured a drill bushing is set in the bracket and is used as a guide to help make sure the drill does through correctly. 1988 Dodge Diplomat uses a spotight with a V length shaft mounted with a 220 installation kit for driver side mount and a 220RH installation kit for passenger side.

I just wanna know how to turn it on. I have a 2011 cvpi with one on.
Inside of the vehicle, on the handle of the light used to move it, there is a toggle switch on the handle that is used to turn the light on and off. Possible issues if this does not work is the bulb is burned out and needs to be replaced, or if this is a retired police car, sometimes when preparing them for sale departments may have disconnected the light from the power source.

Unity approved applications should not interfere with deployment of air bags. If we find that there would be any interference with deployment of air bags we try different mounting location. If we still cannot find a safe and functional location, we do not publish an application for the vehicle. For instance we do not have a spotlight application for the current model of Chevrolet Colorado/ GMC Canyon due to interference with side air curtain.

How about a shorter Shaft? The Jeep Wrangler has a very small cabin. That Shaft is very long, that shaft is right in your face. How can I buy a shorter shaft?
We have around 80 different shaft options and 17 standard shaft lengths. Not knowing what shaft you have or what year of Wrangler makes it hard to give you a good answer. I'm going to make some guesses, if anything is wrong the info may be different, let me know and I will give you correct info.
I am going to guess this is a 2018-1997 Jeep Wrangler. For that, we recommend a V length spotlight shaft mounted with a 12 installation kit for driver side or 12RH for passenger side.
Without knowing shaft length can't tell you if that is shorter or not than what you have. If you bought a light second hand from somewhere like ebay, most of those lights tend to be Crown Victoria spotlights. Those lights use a very specific shaft designed only for Ford Crown Victoria (and vehicles of the same base frame) The shaft is 1 1/2" longer than the V used for the Wrangler. So the V would be shorter than that light. We are also starting to see more Explorer and Taurus lights from similar sources. Those lights are 3" and 6 1/2" longer.
Shaft of a spotlight can be switched out. Replacement V shaft is 3615-V-45.

Yes, the a-pillar structure is now weaker, but there is a reason why the company has 'recommended' mounting locations and templates to perform the installations, it's because the recommended location and installation method is designed to cause the least structural damage to the vehicle
