The wild thing to me playing the first time recently is like
We have this game about a defense lawyer and his battles in a lopsided criminal justice system
And we learn about a man who has had the entire criminal justice system under his thumb for decades, an untouchable man who can do what he wants and never face repercussions for it, and pull strings in the police department and the courts to get what he wants.
And all of that is resolved in *the first case after the tutorial*. Absolutely wild

I'm surprised they didn't talk about how well 2-4 made you feel Phoenix's desperation to drag the trial out, grasping at straws to come up with contradictions and finding statements to meaninglessly press, and even being vilified by the gallery near the end. Definite S-tier for me, probably my second favourite case after 3-5.

Larry's interruption in case 1-4 is actually one of my favorite moments in the entire series. Just. This fucking GOOF is the reason we were able to break the case WIDE fucking open. The fact that the DJ is established to explain how he could be listening to loud music with headphones and possibly hear the gunshot, and then *what* the DJ was saying is the thing that breaks everything.

    • @whatisthis252
      @whatisthis252 4 місяці тому +2

Them commenting the case 2-3's villain was the most sympathetic was very surprising. They commented just minutes before that in this case 3 people wanted to propose to a child, but the villain of that case wanted to KILL THAT SAME CHILD. And it wasn't like it was spur of the moment or anything he premeditated the fuck out of murdering a child. The only reason that child didn't die was because he ACCIDENTLY killed her father instead. I'm just failing to see how attempted murder of a child is sympathetic. As for Yanni Yogi, he blamed and tried to get revenge on a child for the mistreatment he received for something that, even if it had been true, was no fault of the CHILD's.
Though I do agree that while that is probably the worst case of the series it does feel like it gets a bit more hate than it deserves.

While Larry's character in 3-5 is abysmal, his upside down picture was a fun twist. Playing as Edgeworth was fun, but it felt like lost potential. But I found the second half of that case so. boring. I just did not care. The best part of the second half was that Dahlia animation of leaving the witness stand.

Yeah 1-5 being the equivalent of a entire game is definitely a feature, not a bug. The only way I would find that a issue is because it’s placed at the end of a regular game. So you don’t get the smooth introduction other games actually have. But that also means they can focus on the new mechanics instead of teaching you how to press statements

Good tier list. Love the turnabout samurai appreciation, the investigations are annoying at times but the comedy during the trials is arguable at its peak (oldbag, cody having to testify, Edgeworth’s “mmmmf” and “i was hoping to come up with a question while I was objecting, your honor. I didn’t” “hm... indeed! Verily, I say! Ergo...”) and of course who can forget Unnecessary Feelings. Sal monella is there but Dee Vasquez balances him out and while there are issues there’s a lot to like, which is true of a lot of these cases. I’m all for putting 2-3, 3-3, and 3-4 low for the problematic stuff, it really does put a damper on things. Ace Attorney isn’t perfect but it is a remarkably good game series and a ton of fun.

First of all. Thank you so much for this series. I kinda dropped the games in the middle of 2-4, still, I watched this series, and the reason I didn't finish it earlier was because I founded it, I believe, two years ago, and since then I was watching in when I got a lot of free time, and started anew each time. The reason I was able to actually finish the series this time is because my English finally get good enough to actually watch English videos without too much concentration.
Your series actually helps me with seasonal depression for, like, four or five seasons now, and it's mean world for me.
Secondly, I have a real problem with 1-5, because it's very much a good case with a good character building that kinda became irrelevant, because it's made the last. I really liked Edgeworth in 1-5, and him being "oh, I was in this for my personal record before, but I changed after Phoenix beat me thrice" in second game is a thing I dislike; this man had a pretty logical point that is very consistent with 1-4, and then him being rollbacked is sort of sad. Or, remember first case where Redd White casually calls Chief of Police (or Chief Prosecutor) after beating the shit from Phoenix? like, it was either Gant or Lana being ordered around by Blanco Nino. Sorta hard to imagine, in my opinion.
And, I really, really, really have a pretty specific problem with 3-5, which I just finished watching: this case position itself as a case with really heavy stuff, which never got resolved as it, in my opinion, deserves. (Sorry for being winded and spammy about it.)
A lot of things would be far less jarring for me if they played for goofs consistently. But they are just treated too seriously inside the case itself; like, it's ok when Sister Bikini is joking about temple being in bad shape and needed a lot of repairs as it's kinda played for the laughs; and then it became a situation where people inside the characters become seriously troubled about Maya being locked in a room with cave-in being a really hot possibility.
Or Franziska being called out by Pearls for being mean and relying on her whip as her main arguement. I mean, Pearls is correct; Franziska has a bit of redeeming moments (like, she's not trying to sabotage Maya survival when she's most obviously the victim, twice, when given opportunities), but nothing came from this bit, she just continues to casually whip people. Yeah, she's whipping a person who was just released from hospital after falling through burning bridge into mountain river, and who is referred as being unable to stay on his feet nicely as he still has a cold after that, because Franziska is annoyed with other characters. It could be funny if she wouldn't be called for this kind of stuff just a minute ago.
Or Morgan being horrible as she abandoned her daughters because of the clan politics, but Misty being a really caring and nice mom despire abandoning her daughters because of clan politics. Bonus points that Misty left her children *with Morgan*, without any protection. Like, what was supposed to stop Morgan from trying to dethrone or outright kill them? But hey, she was carrying a photo of her girls with her, so she's nicest gal in the world.
Especially when she had no reason to actually disappear from Mia's and Maya's lives besides her ego being wounded. I mean, "so, I messed up, and I'm so ashamed that I'm going to disappear, changing my whole identity, doing god knows what for decades, leaving my girls to deal with my mess - now or after 20 years, when I would be officially dead and striken from the record - because this way they're not going to look on their ashamed mother". And the game highlights it, showing that Maya is actually very lonely and very much want to have her mom back.
And Godot is the worst. Godot is allowed to have Cool Anime Monologues with everyone convincing him that he's cool as a cucumber kinda would be ok if, immediatly after this scene, we don't have a pretty harsh reminder that this situation is really, really traumatic for 9-years-old Pearl, and Godot intentionally build the situation because everything is about him. Maya being bring onto stand just because Godot kinda wanted upper hand against Wright would be ok if he would be an evil guy like von Karma, who got properly punished in the end; especially when he starts with "hey, girly, your mother was killed before your eyes, you can change nothing about this", when it was he himself who killed Maya's mother before her eyes, and no one rub it into his visor. And the worst thing, in my opinion, is that he's allowed to get the ending on his terms; it's still about _him_ being able to "forgive" Wright. It's he himself saying stuff like "oh, I didn't do it to protect Maya, I did it for myself", and everyone is starting to cry and explain to him that he's good and nice and actually absolutely try to help Maya.

About Shu Takumi and Turnabout Beginnings being intended as Trials and Tribulation's intro case: That's _partially_ true - while Turnabout Beginnings was made later in development (Memories (3-1) was made first) as part of the plan to have two Mia cases in the game, Shu Takumi debated as he was writing it to make it the first case and trade places with Memories, but ultimately he kept Memories as the tutorial case since his personal philosophy is that the tutorial case should be impactful, and decided that "Defending Phoenix Wright in his college days" was more of an impactful premise than "Defending a death row inmate".
In fact, the decision to have Edgeworth as the prosecutor was an attempt by Takumi to add more impact to the case in an attempt to justify to himself that it could be the tutorial case (which ultimately failed, but it did lead Takumi to come up with the final moment when he realized he pitted two characters that were supposed to be undefeated against each other in their debut case).

Honestly, my dislike of 1-2 is not really because of the lamp receipt, but because you often feel so helpless to influence the story. There are three, count 'em, THREE times in the case where you get bailed out without having any input as Phoenix:
-the bellboy slips up right after you run out of things to cross examine him about
-Phoenix is not the one to figure out the lamp receipt and it's just Mia straight up telling you instead
-The trial threatens to be extended further, which is stopped not by Phoenix, but again by Mia blackmailing Redd White

1-1 establishes that there are no fair trials here (no jury, just a dim judge).
1-2 establishes that the police are dumb, and both judge and prosecution are corrupt.
Then 1-4 gives us von Karma, who commands the court to a ludicrous extent. You know he's gotten innocent people convincted, and doesn't care.
Despite being added later, 1-5 continues this theme. Lana and Gant are corrupt too.
The whole first game isn't just a battle against bad circumstance, the entire justice system is against you. None of the other games have this same sense of scale, though 2-4 and 3-5 definitely keep up.

You're a terrible lawyer! It's YOUR fault these people are found guilty and going to jail now! YOU failed to defend them!". No, YOU came in spewing nonsense and chugging coffee, giving Phoenix a hard time and nitpicking every single minuscule detail. YOU used those trials without caring about those people's lives afterwards. Mostly agree with the list, only two things: one, I don't think it's fair to judge the cases by the second playthrough, because it's an investigation game. It's better to judge them by how you first felt discovering the twists. So, by that measure, 2-4 is an S tier to me. It was the only case that genuinely made my heart race.
Second: I think 3-5 deserves more credit. The developers managed to tie up absolutely every single plot line of the trilogy, which alone is already a feat. But also, they managed to make Phoenix and Mia bring justice to someone who's already dead, which is a plot resolution near-impossible to achieve. So for shittalking a spirit so hard they get exorcized, and for successfuly portraying Godot, and justifying his behavior, as a raging ball of anger and contempt, I'd give 3-5 the top spot of the list.

The third one was the only one from the trilogy that was available in my country back then lmao 😭 I had no idea it was the third one. In fact, I played AA4 first, thinking it was a standalone game (oh, how wrong I was...) then AA3 and THEN AA1 and AA2. The fact that I didn't know much English back then and I was a child didn't help me understand the context of the game any better lol

I'd personally move 2-4 up just for Matt being a favourite of mine, but I'd also move 1-3 down because Vasquez... really didn't need to frame anyone. Heck, Mimi is way more sympathetic than Acro is.
I also don't agree with keeping 2-4 out of S tier, Matt is only obvious because of video game logic, not in-game logic. I'm with Wes with how much it blew my mind as a kid, and everytime I rewatch it I'm reminded of just how great it is. It's definitely still rivalled only by 3-5 in my eyes. The reasoning about the more arduous parts is fair, but I don't think that's enough to keep it out of S tier.

I agree with Prij that 1-5 is the best case in the trilogy. It was long, yes. But I think it made good use of the time it got, because of its insanely good character cast. Compare it with 1-4, where you have 2 new interesting characters (Yani Yogi and von Karma) and 2 funny ones with Lotta and Polly. 1-5 has Lana, Ema, Officer Marshal, Angel Starr, Damon Gant on the interesting side and only Mike Mekins as a comedic extra (who was legendary). It takes time to introduce these characters to that extend and 1-5 did that phenomenaly. It dragged a bit at times, the first few cross examinations of Angel could've been shorter for example, but I loved the overall case, the characters and the story.

deff disagree with 3-5 being low S-tier, is definitaly think it's the best case in the trilogy, maybe the best in the main line games. it ties the whole trilogy up, and DL6 is only mentioned because it's related, and it's not that many times either. it also finally uses the concept of a fucking powerful spirit medium clan. we have had maya and the fey clan for 2 games but they finally use all the family drama and concept of channeling the dead in this case. it's peak ace attorney, with all it's weirdness and bullshit and it makes it even better. the paranormal aspect reaches it's true potential, while tying up the games own arc, and the entire PW series.

I wouldn’t want every Ace Attorney case to be like that, but it’s fine if the series does that every once in a while. It generally works best for the first case of the game where they need to ease new players in.

My personal S tier list would be 1-4 followed very closely by 3-5, and while I do love 1-5 as well, it would be the top of A tier just above 2-4. I actually feel 1-5 and 2-4 are in the same genre of being great as standalones, but not feeling as meaningful because it's divorced from the overall character arcs. While 2-4 does try to go into phoenix's personal growth as a lawyer, I don't actually think it accomplishes that super well bc it focuses more on the suspense of the trial rather than saying something coherent and meaningful about Phoenix's development. And I remember being confused and disappointed at 1-5 despite enjoying the case bc I thought it would carry on with the character and relationship development from 1-4 which is my personal top case of the trilogy, and I had no idea it was only added in later lmao so it honestly left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. Like it doesnt work well as a conclusion to the first game like the other two S tiers do, with nothing properly developed or concluded in terms of themes or character development/relationships.

Highly disagree with the placement of 2-1. First because honestly? I think it's the only acceptable excuse in this trilogy as to why you need a tutorial. Second because there were no bad characters in it. Third because it had some really funny stuff like how forgettable Payne is. And last because i liked seeing Phoenix re-discovering the satisfaction of proving the prosecution wrong and just being a lawyer in general. Also accidental Hobo Phoenix foreshadowing.

(I also hate the investigation sections with every fiber of my being.)

  • @Xueria
    @Xueria Рік тому +1

I am so glad that you put 2-1 in C. The amnesia angle for justifying the tutorial is so stupid and contrived, the murder itself is boring, the killer is forgettable and lame, and the only good thing I can think about is, as you guys said, Maggie. Even then, she's far from a top tier character. She's cute, kinda fun, and is nice for her pseudo relationship with Gumshoe, but that's it. This case is easily my least favourite of the entire trilogy.
3-3 is probably the second worst for me. I don't hate it or anything, but Tigre impersonating Phoenix is pretty dumb and doesn't go anywhere, plus the bad stereotyped characters.
I am a defender of 2-3. I like Moe the clown. I love his bad jokes and the fact that he has some depths behind the pathetic clown face he shows (the ex wife and kids, the deep respect he clearly has for the victim, his sense of responsibility in taking over the ringmaster position at the end, and the maturity to realize that Regina has been coddled and needs to learn the harshness of the case to grow up a little bit). I even enjoy Ben and Trillo and their whole shtick. Plus, the development of all their characters in learning to respect each other and work together to come through these hard times. And of course, the sympathetic villain in Acro is wonderful. Even so, I couldn't justify it being higher than low B. The biggest reason? Regina. Oh god, I hate Regina. Take the everybody is attracted to her angle that Dahlia has and turn it up to eleven, except she's so incredibly stupid and naive and obliviously harmful to those around her that it's insane that anybody would be interested in her at all! At least Dahlia actively pretended to be a good, sweet, reasonably intelligent girl and worked to manipulate people. The weak, convoluted murder is just a minor annoyance compared to Regina. The only thing I can't forgive Acro for is that he failed at killing Regina.

Even when he finally admits to it all he says he knows Regina didn't mean to get his brother injured, but he still wanted to kill her.
I guess people give him a break because he says he's sorry and starts crying, but I still think he's a piece of shit. At least the other villains just own up to their crimes.

  • @espurrseyes42
    @espurrseyes42 Рік тому +4

1-1 should be A tier. You can' judge it too harshly because it's the first case of the series, and it does its job pretty well. There's not much wrong with it given that it's a tutorial case whereas 1-2 earns its B tier for spoiling the killer (which I guess is fine since this is still Game 1) for the BS way you take down Red White.
I can't in good conscious say 1-5 is better than 1-4 due to some annoying gameplay elements like having the watch the footage of Rock Lee (literally just remembered his name is Meekins after calling him RL) getting assaulted to the tune of the Blue Badger theme and repairing the vase. That and the weird timeline issues this case causes like being Edgeworth's last case when that phrase "Edgeworth's last case" in AA2 was referring to 1-4.
You can't not put 2-4 in S when it puts Phoenix in a position where he's questioning is his reason for being a defense attorney and getting help from Edgeworth, mirroring how Edgeworth questioned his reason for being a prosecutor in the previous game and was aided by Phoenix. And even when he knows what he needs to do, it's still painful seeing Phoenix have to knowingly accuse an innocent Adrian Andrews, who has her own baggage she's dealing with, just to buy time for the police to rescue Maya, as well as everything seemingly possible going wrong to stress him out further. For a nobody in the grand scheme of things, it's really impressive how much Matt Engarde made Phoenix in particular suffer throughout this case, and it's a miracle the gang was able to both put him away and save Maya.
First, 3-4 should go in A tier simply on the basis of how shockingly it ends. Also, Diego can't be in 3-1 because his reason for hating Phoenix is entirely based on the fact that he was poisoned and put in a coma for years by Dahlia during a post-trial questioning to hopefully solve the Valerie Hawthorne case. Dahlia gets convicted in the trial of Phoenix Wright, so there's no opportunity for Diego to get poisoned so he can be out of the picture when Redd White goes after Mia for due to her snooping.
2-3 and 3-3 are too high.

Unpopular opinion here : 2-3 is my favourite case in Justice for all... Don't get me wrong, it's a pretty mediocre case, but I dislike the other cases more.
2-1 is good but it's an intro case so it doesn't have much to offer.
2-2 really lost me at some point because of how hard they shoe-horned the murder charge on Maya. They act as if self-defence was still a murder, they completely ignore the obvious fact that spirit mediums can't control the spirits they channel... That doesn't make any sense and I felt a serious lack of purpose in what was happening.
The second half of the case is better but it doesn't compensate the first one for me.
2-4 tries way too hard to shoehorn its dilemma as a lawyer thing when really it isn't. For once, DeKiller's plan makes absolutely no sense. He could have kidnapped Edgeworth's relatives to force him to abandon the case, or the Judge's relatives to automatically get a non-guilty verdict, and instead of that he kidnapped Phoenix relatives. His blackmail is basically "do your job normally".
The story they claim to tell is about being a defence lawyer and what "defending" someone really means. But the actual story has nothing to do with being a lawyer : Phoenix's problem is that Maya is held hostage. As far as his job is concerned, he could have refused to continue the case.
I again felt a serious lack of purpose in the second half of the case, where Phoenix tries to stall the case. Our protagonist literally has no plan aside from waiting, and the game doesn't offer interesting mechanics, like the need to focus on meaningless contradictions instead of meaningful ones.
And finally, Phoenix turning against his client gives the pretty dangerous message that guilty people shouldn't be defended by an attorney. 2-3 has a whole lot of things that are both unethical and illegal, but they are not related to trials proceedings, so in game centred around trials, they don't bother me quite as much.

    • @kingexplosionmurder3764

Phoenix turning against his client absolutely makes sense, did you really expect him to be fine with Matt having Maya held hostage? In the end it’s still totally up to the player if they want to plead not guilty. Matt brings it upon himself by betraying De Killer and admitting guilt, that isn’t Phoenix’s fault for wanting to save Maya over someone who blackmailed him.

    • @SolariusLunarius
      @SolariusLunarius Рік тому

@@kingexplosionmurder3764 Yeah sure, but again that has nothing to do with being a lawyer.

Yeh 2-4 has the problem of to many characters that can't be the killer having only 2 Characters that can be.
But i think there is a reason with gone nostagie the Appollo justice triologie is considered better looking on the actual crime set ups.
3-3 is a C for me. I think most character are entertaining on their own. But the crime itself is just to obvious compared to the stuff you have to do. I also not mind them doing fanservice. Maya is a great fit for a maid uniform. But the way they did it was just very bad. They could have come up with so many excuses like Maya going undercover trying to be useful for Phoenix. Or Armstrong makes greate "Hamburger" convincing her to work for him till his real maid comes back for some free meals and part time money. Maya becoming a maid for a short time maybe helps phoenix to discover a deciding piece of evidence.
There are so many better angles as: "Lets make a thereotype character force Maya to wear a maid uniform because fanservice without any other reason". Making it ultra unconfortable.

I can’t wrap up my thoughts in 1 comment on my agreements and disagreements. My channel is devoted to this franchise, and I see each and every one of your opinions as valid. (And was ESPECIALLY happy to see 1-5 love. Which I think is sorely needed.)
If I can make 1 and 1 specific argument out of all of it. 1-1. I don’t think it can be at anything but the bottom case. It is a blank canvas. You need to have the canvas and it is a well built canvas….but you need to have the rest of it. There isn’t a single thing in 1-1 that isn’t done better elsewhere because everything builds on it. And no matter how much you dislike a case, it has more pros than 1-1 does. 2-3, 3-3, 2-1, 3-4 all of them have more to their name than 1-1 does. Not because their longer, but because the characters feel like people in every case but this one. And it’s for HALF the tutorial, not even the full one. 1-2 is the true introduction to pressing.
All I can say is watch me and my brother discuss this franchise in our channel. Can’t recommend to Prij, since he’s unfamiliar with the 2nd trilogy and the investigations games. maybe this is an unpopular opinion (im not SUPER knowledgeable about fanon opinions when it comes to the cases aside from apparently a LOT of people hating big top) but i hate rise from the ashes because i didnt like any of the characters and its so different to the other cases mechanically, plus story-wise it doesnt make as much sense for edgeworth to hang around for two months and THEN fake his own death. maybe it's more realistic but i prefer him being a dramatic bitch and fucking off right after 1-4

I know im super late to put my thoughts down here, but can people remind me why case 2-4 is loved so much? I have SO many problems with it, but ill voice the main ones. What are the stakes supposed to be, and why is the killer so easy to guess? For me theres no stakes because games like this (and basically all games in general) hafta have a happy ending, so Maya getting kidnapped for blackmail isnt anything special or unique, you know shes gonna be fine by the end. But the other huge issue is that we have 3 re-occuring character, which leaves... 2 suspects. Only 2. What is the mystery supposed to be exactly if theres only one person other then your client who could be the killer? Made it pretty obvious that something was up, so i of course guessed that our client was guilty for the first time since it hasnt happened yet. What a surprise, Matts guilty. Theres nothing i can say thats likeable about the case, at least for me

Someone PLEASE help me understand why Mia even wrote Maya down on the receipt! It feels so random and not only ruins the ending of the case for the same reasons they point out in the video, but also kind of ruins, the detective finding it for me, and IMMEDIATELY arresting her over the name, being written down for seemingly no reason.

Redd White was the one who wrote that.

Honnestly I really don't like the Dahlia Arc in T&T (which make the whole game hard to like for me) I don't think she makes a great vilain at all.
I feel strange that neither Maya nor Mia never discovered they had 3 more cousins, that Morgan fey manage to Hide for some reaons.
The hiden twin is an aweful twist for me, and it make everything else cool in the game hard to swallow.
