I'm a 20 year Navy vet (ship sailor, not a seal, lol) and I looked for about 5 years and finally ran across a P226 Navy with no rail. It was very reasonably priced so I snatched it up and it instantly became my favorite gun. It shoots smooth as silk. I'm not a fan of 'tacti-cool' crap. The 226 is an honest, reliable weapon that just works every single time and it's more accurate than I am. Great channel, great reviews, great gun 😀

@@seadweller386 watched an Canadian police member getting ready to go overseas, while doing a fast draw and double tap he forgot to take his finger off the trigger while he was holstering the pistol he put an "evil" round just above the kneecap and it came out just under the bottom side of the kneecap. Only word he said was shit don't tell the wife I did this again.
I've shot a lot of firearms over the past 50+ years. I've got to agree with you. The Sig P226, for me, is the most accurate sidearms that I own. Keep in mind that I cut my teeth on the venerable Colt 1911 A-1 45 acp, in the Marine Corps. I love my Colts, but I've got to be honest. The P226 is my nightstand pistol, along with a 12 gauge shotgun!
Mine is a 1988 226. The best gun ever made. Accurate as I am,Never failed, 15000 rounds and used when I got it. The alpha ,the omega, the king 👑 My 228 is the same. Handsome, fantastic fit . Perfect details. Unequaled.
My local gun store offers a used P226 MK25 made in the USA... I believe, I will buy it this week. I like this gun. It was my fathers gun as he was a police officer in the 80th.
The small South Carolina Police Department I am retired from, purchased and issued after much testing of several Big Name semi-auto handguns and a LOT of ammo, the P220 that replaced the Ruger P90s that we had carried for years. At first I was not in favor of the P220 but after firing several hundred rounds I came to embrace the pistol as the best I had ever carried as a duty weapon. We were the first department in S.C. to issue a modern .45ACP handgun (the Rugers) and I nor any of my fellow officers ever felt under armed with either the caliber ( 230grn +P+ JHP ammo was standard issue) or the Sigs themselves once they entered service. But then we felt the same way about our old P90s too! If I should happen upon a used P220 OR P226 in good condition I would happily snap either of them up, or both if I got extremely lucky, and never feel like I was under armed today. I have a 220. Proof marks indicate '85. My son was looking at it and asked, "What's W.Germany?" That's West Germany son. "Dad, there's no such country!" lol
Beautiful holster wear. I have a 1994 W German P226 9mm that I bought from a retired police officer. It was his duty pistol. I absolutely love and cherish that gun and it will go with me to the grave.

Nice review and description. I see one almost identical on AL I wouldn't mind having and always like that design. My only sig was a stainless 1911 compact that I was totally underwhelmed with as out of the box. called sig and said due to tight tolerances needed to shoot 200 rounds to break it in? dumped that puppy quick
i have a 226 in .357sig, a 228 in 9mm and a 229 in 9mm. none of mine have rails. all of them have siglite night sights. i consider the 226 (just like you) to be one of the very best hand guns ever made. so, i certainly do positively agree! right straight out of the box with nothing done it the p226 it's such a fine gun. i wouldn't change one single thing about the gun and it's a gun i will never part with under any circumstances. i consider the 228 & 229 to be guns i'll never part with either. i think the 226 in .357sig has quite a bite more punch and i think that the large frame of the 226 absorbes the recoil of the .357sig round very well. very easy for close well controlled faster groups. i'm also a big fan of the 9mm round and i wouldn't mind it at all if i had a 226 in 9mm. i'm really interested in the newer released sig p227 that only comes in a double stacked .45ACP! betcha you know about it, too! the 227 being for the most part the same gun as a 226 but chambered in .45ACP i'm real seriously torn between buying right now because i know for sure i would love that gun! i love colt 1911's and 1911's in general... big fan! i also have a colt gov model 1911 in .38super! great gun, too! i have a colt 1911 .45ACP gov model. both colts are series 70's. love those guns! right with colts IMO are SIGS! i love sigs (period)! thanks for your wonderful video! loved it and great shooting! i'm an NRA member and i'm watching the election. i'm hoping nevada falls NRA friendly! thanks my friend, again!

I have a railed US-made P226 and I am still on the lookout for a German-made rail-less model. After I find one of those I will look for a German-made P228 as well...

Nice! But I think we can all agree the Pistol the US Army should have chosen is the Borchardt C-93! With over 100 years time proven this pistol can also double as a SBR! Now that's Modular! With an Original list Price of less than $100 where can you go wrong?

I love my German made P220. I reload 45acp, so the 220 made sense. My dad has a W German P228, and it's a thing of beauty. It's easy to see you're comfortable with that gun. Good shooting there

my first pistol was a lionheart 9 mk II and then I bought an fns 9 and fell absolutely in love with stryker type actions. so much so i sold my lh9 and bought the sig 320. it is quite a beast to tame, and as new shooter i must say it has become my favouritw gun. It will never leave my sidw, unless i get a 229 or 250. definately have become a sig fanboy!
I know someone who's P229 (virtually the same gun, just a tad smaller) ended up with a cracked frame... But after 15 years of daily carry and an estimated 300,000* rounds (not a misprint) during ongoing, abusive training. And just for the record, that Sig was still shooting fine. Crack was detected by the dept's gunsmith during a periodic servicing. (Firearm was duty weapon for a federal agent working in a firearm training intensive program)

I believe in some other video, the man was trained as a Federal Agent, in the Office of Secure Transport (OST). These are the people that a charged with the safety of movement of classified materials (i.e. weapons).
I read that this man was once part of the federal security teams that escort classified materials for the Dept. of Energy. They are trained to protect the material, and use both offensive and defensive tactics.
I read somewhere that this man was once a Federal agent with the Office of Secure Tranportation, a part of the National Nuclear Security Agency. They are highly trained.
As always outstanding videos with a bit of humor thrown in. I bought a sig p250 a few wks ago. Very accurate but that long DA trigger. So I went to the local gun dealer and put a p226 in law away. The p250 didn't cost half as much as the p226. They are Damn proud of the prices for sure. I hope it's as accurate as the older ones . I'm itching to get out this wk 80° and do some shooting. I purchased my W. German made P-226 in Nevada in 1989. Still going strong. The main difference between the older Sig's and the new ones is primarily the slide. The older ones had carbon steel slides, which are not as heavy as the new Stainless slides. On the downside, the carbon ones came with bluing that easily wore off, which you can see in the video on the front nose, and on the decocker and mag release. I feel the carbon steel slides did give the gun better overall balance. It also had unique milling and the three proof marks on bottom slide lug and the frame. It also has matching serial numbers on the slide, frame and barrel. Back then, 9mm was the only caliber available. These days one can choose from 9mm, .40 S&W and .357 SIG
I own the P226 made in West Germany. I tell people it was made in west Germany and I also get the look of Where? Got it new and will never sell the P226. I tell people who see me shoot it's not me hitting the target, It's the great Gun.
I own a '91 P220 and was surprised to see it had the wear markings exactly in the same spots, namely, the frame looking like new while the slide being the one that took the holster wear. Btw sir, love your style, it's easy to see how skilled you are, yet you explain everything from the basics and up like a patient, seasoned school teacher would do. The progenitor of this gun is the Swiss P75, a single stack 9x19mm. The Swiss Army adopted it as an inexpensive replacement for the SIG P210. The P75 was also chambered in 7.65x21 (.30 Luger) for civilian use. When SIG was acquired by J.P. Sauer,.a low-end German manufacturer known for its inexpensive 32 ACP pocket pistols, that pistol was sold as the P220, originally chambered in 9x19 (and later commercially available in 45ACP). SIG Sauer then developed the P226, a double stack P75, for police use. The double/single action mechanism is derived from the P-38 Walther, and Walther PP/PPK pistols. The Swiss Army rejected the double stack concept in 1947 in testing prototypes of the P210 when it found that soldiers shot the single stack guns more accurately.

Totally agree. I have had a lot of handguns through the years; and I shoot the 226 more accurately than any other; except maybe the P227... about the same. For me, there is no competition; sig P226/227 is the best. ...now for a p227 in 10mm; that would be the best for sure.
Browning imported the first P220's in 77-78-79 prior to Sig getting its import license. These are marked Sig Sauer Systems made in West Germany other side has Browning Arms. They have the European style mag release in the heel of the gun. Nothing against modern Sigs and manufacturing, but imo you can't beat that Swiss German engineering that was more hands on. Every thing is serialized frame, barrel and slide. The 220 in 45 acp put Sig on the map, great guns

I have a 1995 Sig 226 and sadly the gun started to crack in the frame right at the take down lever! This gun I bought used couple years ago and it was worn for sure but I didn't even know or seen the crack until my gunsmith pointed it out when he had disassembled it for a re bluing. So on the inside of the frame where he saw the crack he put some silver solder on it just to try and strengthen it. It still shoots but I think I'm just gonna retire it to the safe.
Excellent pistol! Great shooting as always. I have a German made P220, manufactured in 96... my favorite gun in my small collection. Not knocking free state P226's but I traded a fairly new P226 Extreme for the P220. I couldn't tolerate the nanny state (Ca) crap on the P226, the LCI was huge, like on a Ruger and the magazine was limited in rounds so a P220 with 8 rounds didn't look bad compared to a 9mm with 10. Since, I've bought factory Sig mags for 10 rounds.
Hello Mixup98, good shooting. I have a P226 Navy from 2008 (Exeter NH) and it drives tacks. It seems the more rounds I put through it the better it shoots.
mixup98, you know i have always had an interest in owning a Browning Hi-Power. i still would like to have one. even though the P226 & the Hi-Power are a lot different and both are from different eras, owning the P226 may be why i haven't bought a Hi-power? somehow to me they both are similar in someway... maybe in high capacity or in the body of the 2 guns... i don't exactly know for sure why to me they are kind of similar guns somehow? i know, they actually are very different firearms. maybe it's this... if i were in a defensive situation of life or death, my weapon of choice of all handguns to have in that situation would be the sig P226. i am fortunate that i can purchase any handguns of my choice no matter the cost. i choose the P226 in .357Sig. that gun fits me. i can hit anything with it and the gun is a machine. i have carried the 226, but it's mainly my primary home defense weapon because it's a horse to haul and pack. i've never been in a defensive situation. i might be standing there shaking in my boots... i don't know, but my home i think isn't a very good place for someone to force entry while i'm there. most likely they'll never make it back outside and that's how it should be, IMO. i live in the country and i have my own gun range. i practice at night by moonlight and low light using the siglite night sights. those siglite night sights are a tool. people should practice in low light at night with those sights. they could be the tool that might save your life. use the same night low lighting with guns that don't have night sights... way different accuracy results. you can't see the sights of the gun at night you can't hit anything. anyway, there's not enough time for me to list all of the things i like about this P226, but i'll say this about it to whoever reads this.... if you're considering buying one... do it. i seriously doubt you'll regret it. thanks!
The gun in its original configuration was the Swiss-made SIG P75, a single stack 9mm and 7.76 Para low-cost replacement for the SIG P210, not a P220 45ACP as stated here.
@@aboulevardier The P75 is indeed 9mm, as was the P210 that was used in the armed forces. 7.65para was the service round until the late 1940s before the 9mm. There are P210s and P220s chambered in 7.65 para though, but way less often than 9mm.
As always fantastic practical shooting. You still have that completive spirit down deep to make your best shot one at a time, However fire an entire string of shots as one. If that makes any sense.. anyway I have fired the Sig P226 and the P220. Both Excellent pistols, One thing I like about the 9mm though, It's cheap!! I Valium Cast and you can get a lot of effective accurate shooting out of that round without busting the Bank. Components combined with a Dillon 550B press and in short time you have ammo cans full of rounds ready to go. I thoroughly enjoy the beauty of Northern Nevada, You are living the Dream Guy. I wanted a 226 back in the day, when I went to purchase one they were pulled back by the government to use in the DEA, Secrete Service and others. The quality is amazing. Instead, last month I bought a P320 and it blew up on the 16th shot. SIG said it was from an " over powered" round. The only parts that did not sustain damage was the barrel and trigger group. This would not have been the case with the 226. How did this pass tests with the military, seems like a delicate weapon.
I'm jealous"the Sig P226 is also my fave gun" especially the West GERMAN one! I owned a Sig P229 an older one in .40 cal I bought used' it was made in 1996" never had a hiccup" I sold it and have regretted it ever since' I now own a bunch of Glocks'

I carried a P226 for years on duty. I switched to the P320 about 6 months ago. I'm not going back. The P226 was a good gun and was one of the best for it's time. But DA/SA is obsolete now. It's all about striker fired today and the P320 is arguably the best of the bunch.
NathanaelFaunce da/sa isn't obsolete! A good hmmer DA trigger pull (first shot) is an awesome "safety" for many people who conceal carry, especially for those who appendix carry. : P

My brother has one and now I need it! My possibly unpopular opinion: I have to say though I do think the S&W 5906 and maybe even the Ruger P89 can go toe to toe with it. The P226 definitely has a better DA pull than those two though in my opinion.

This is my favorite pistol, but there is one little mistake here: it was designed in West Germany. Sig Sauer is a partnership between the swiss SIG and the german JP Sauer&Sohn. Swiss guns never sold outside of switzerland because they made them too expensively. JP Sauer&Sohn on the other hand had developed techniques to produce high quality guns efficiently, partially because they were competing with Walther, Mauser and later H&K. The Sig Sauer P226 shares a lot of features from pistols JP Sauer&Sohn produced before their partnership with SIG. So it's more "Sauer" than "SIG" (which sounds weird).
I really like the way those old used west German sigs look better than a brand new one.

i have a 226 in .357sig, a 228 in 9mm and a 229 in 9mm.
none of mine have rails. all of them have siglite night sights.
i consider the 226 (just like you) to be one of the very best
hand guns ever made. so, i certainly do positively agree!
right straight out of the box with nothing done it the p226 it's
such a fine gun. i wouldn't change one single thing about the
gun and it's a gun i will never part with under any circumstances.
i consider the 228 & 229 to be guns i'll never part with either.
i think the 226 in .357sig has quite a bite more punch and i think
that the large frame of the 226 absorbes the recoil of the .357sig
round very well. very easy for close well controlled faster groups.
i'm also a big fan of the 9mm round and i wouldn't mind it at all if
i had a 226 in 9mm.
i'm really interested in the newer released sig p227 that only
comes in a double stacked .45ACP! betcha you know about
it, too! the 227 being for the most part the same gun as a 226
but chambered in .45ACP i'm real seriously torn between
buying right now because i know for sure i would love that gun!
i love colt 1911's and 1911's in general... big fan! i also have a
colt gov model 1911 in .38super! great gun, too! i have a colt
1911 .45ACP gov model. both colts are series 70's. love those
guns! right with colts IMO are SIGS! i love sigs (period)!

I love my 226. I've had it for years and haven't experienced a single malfunction shooting God only knows how many thousands of rounds. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Beautiful country in your video. Wish I had such a picturesque setting to plunk around in. Thanks for sharing! - Subscribed

I regret selling mine . Bought one in 1990. Now have the p229 and p228 p320. But can’t find the west German all stainless steel frame one anymore

I love my German made P220. I reload 45acp, so the 220 made sense. My dad has a W German P228, and it's a thing of beauty. It's easy to see you're comfortable with that gun. Good shooting there

I have a P.226 "all steel" "made in Germany" and I.M.O. is the best combat pistol ever made.
my first pistol was a lionheart 9 mk II and then I bought an fns 9 and fell absolutely in love with stryker type actions. so much so i sold my lh9 and bought the sig 320. it is quite a beast to tame, and as new shooter i must say it has become my favouritw gun. It will never leave my sidw, unless i get a 229 or 250. definately have become a sig fanboy!
I know someone who's P229 (virtually the same gun, just a tad smaller) ended up with a cracked frame... But after 15 years of daily carry and an estimated 300,000* rounds (not a misprint) during ongoing, abusive training. And just for the record, that Sig was still shooting fine. Crack was detected by the dept's gunsmith during a periodic servicing.
(Firearm was duty weapon for a federal agent working in a firearm training intensive program)

50 yards (45.72M) with open sights. Oh, and with a hand gun...Magic hands people. Whatever training has gone on professionally or privately for this man I don't know. Practise makes perfect as we all know. But where does perfect come from...? I believe we are seeing it here. This man needs to be training people. A lot of people. Weapon handling for a start and later, marksmanship. A teacher like this is very, very rare. Just watch, be quiet and learn. These are amazing videos in the art of firearm handling, manipulation and use. I'm trying to replicate his movement with various weapons and it's working very well actually. A lot of people are going to know. Safety. Grace in movement. Weapon control. Target acusition. Accuracy. Repeat accuracy. Target rejection and target choice. Weapon clear. Safety. Repeat process. The way this man handles any firearm is a lesson to all. Firearms come in extraordinary variety. The way he manages each individual design is exactly the same with deep sensitivity to each design difference. Learn his base philosophy and shoot for the stars regardless of the make, model or calibre. Zen and the art of weapon management and we have it right here, shared and proven. I believe in some other video, the man was trained as a Federal Agent, in the Office of Secure Transport (OST). These are the people that a charged with the safety of movement of classified materials (i.e. weapons).
I read that this man was once part of the federal security teams that escort classified materials for the Dept. of Energy.
They are trained to protect the material, and use both offensive and defensive tactics.
I read somewhere that this man was once a Federal agent with the Office of Secure Tranportation, a part of the National Nuclear Security Agency. They are highly trained.
As always outstanding videos with a bit of humor thrown in. I bought a sig p250 a few wks ago. Very accurate but that long DA trigger. So I went to the local gun dealer and put a p226 in law away. The p250 didn't cost half as much as the p226. They are Damn proud of the prices for sure. I hope it's as accurate as the older ones

I purchased my W. German made P-226 in Nevada in 1989. Still going strong. The main difference between the older Sig's and the new ones is primarily the slide. The older ones had carbon steel slides, which are not as heavy as the new Stainless slides. On the downside, the carbon ones came with bluing that easily wore off, which you can see in the video on the front nose, and on the decocker and mag release. I feel the carbon steel slides did give the gun better overall balance. It also had unique milling and the three proof marks on bottom slide lug and the frame. It also has matching serial numbers on the slide, frame and barrel.
Back then, 9mm was the only caliber available. These days one can choose from 9mm, .40 S&W and .357 SIG

I own the P226 made in West Germany. I tell people it was made in west Germany and I also get the look of Where? Got it new and will never sell the P226. I tell people who see me shoot it's not me hitting the target, It's the great Gun.
I own a '91 P220 and was surprised to see it had the wear markings exactly in the same spots, namely, the frame looking like new while the slide being the one that took the holster wear.
Btw sir, love your style, it's easy to see how skilled you are, yet you explain everything from the basics and up like a patient, seasoned school teacher would do.

The progenitor of this gun is the Swiss P75, a single stack 9x19mm. The Swiss Army adopted it as an inexpensive replacement for the SIG P210. The P75 was also chambered in 7.65x21 (.30 Luger) for civilian use. When SIG was acquired by J.P. Sauer,.a low-end German manufacturer known for its inexpensive 32 ACP pocket pistols, that pistol was sold as the P220, originally chambered in 9x19 (and later commercially available in 45ACP). SIG Sauer then developed the P226, a double stack P75, for police use. The double/single action mechanism is derived from the P-38 Walther, and Walther PP/PPK pistols. The Swiss Army rejected the double stack concept in 1947 in testing prototypes of the P210 when it found that soldiers shot the single stack guns more accurately.

Totally agree. I have had a lot of handguns through the years; and I shoot the 226 more accurately than any other; except maybe the P227... about the same. For me, there is no competition; sig P226/227 is the best. ...now for a p227 in 10mm; that would be the best for sure.

Browning imported the first P220's in 77-78-79 prior to Sig getting its import license. These are marked Sig Sauer Systems made in West Germany other side has Browning Arms. They have the European style mag release in the heel of the gun. Nothing against modern Sigs and manufacturing, but imo you can't beat that Swiss German engineering that was more hands on. Every thing is serialized frame, barrel and slide. The 220 in 45 acp put Sig on the map, great guns

I have a 1995 Sig 226 and sadly the gun started to crack in the frame right at the take down lever! This gun I bought used couple years ago and it was worn for sure but I didn't even know or seen the crack until my gunsmith pointed it out when he had disassembled it for a re bluing. So on the inside of the frame where he saw the crack he put some silver solder on it just to try and strengthen it. It still shoots but I think I'm just gonna retire it to the safe.

I have a German made P220, manufactured in 96... my favorite gun in my small collection. Not knocking free state P226's but I traded a fairly new P226 Extreme for the P220. I couldn't tolerate the nanny state (Ca) crap on the P226, the LCI was huge, like on a Ruger and the magazine was limited in rounds so a P220 with 8 rounds didn't look bad compared to a 9mm with 10. Since, I've bought factory Sig mags for 10 rounds.

Hello Mixup98, good shooting. I have a P226 Navy from 2008 (Exeter NH) and it drives tacks. It seems the more rounds I put through it the better it shoots.
mixup98, you know i have always had an interest in owning a Browning Hi-Power. i still would like to have one. even though the P226 & the Hi-Power are a lot different and both are from different eras, owning the P226 may be why i haven't bought a Hi-power? somehow to me they both are similar in someway... maybe in high capacity or in the body of the 2 guns... i don't exactly know for sure why to me they are kind of similar guns somehow? i know, they actually are very different firearms. maybe it's this... if i were in a defensive situation of life or death, my weapon of choice of all handguns to have in that situation would be the sig P226. i am fortunate that i can purchase any handguns of my choice no matter the cost. i choose the P226 in .357Sig. that gun fits me. i can hit anything with it and the gun is a machine. i have carried the 226, but it's mainly my primary home defense weapon because it's a horse to haul and pack. i've never been in a defensive situation. i might be standing there shaking in my boots... i don't know, but my home i think isn't a very good place for someone to force entry while i'm there. most likely they'll never make it back outside and that's how it should be, IMO. i live in the country and i have my own gun range. i practice at night by moonlight and low light using the siglite night sights. those siglite night sights are a tool. people should practice in low light at night with those sights. they could be the tool that might save your life. use the same night low lighting with guns that don't have night sights... way different accuracy results. you can't see the sights of the gun at night you can't hit anything. anyway, there's not enough time for me to list all of the things i like about this P226, but i'll say this about it to whoever reads this.... if you're considering buying one... do it. i seriously doubt you'll regret it. thanks!
The gun in its original configuration was the Swiss-made SIG P75, a single stack 9mm and 7.76 Para low-cost replacement for the SIG P210, not a P220 45ACP as stated here.

@@aboulevardier The P75 is indeed 9mm, as was the P210 that was used in the armed forces. 7.65para was the service round until the late 1940s before the 9mm. There are P210s and P220s chambered in 7.65 para though, but way less often than 9mm.

As always fantastic practical shooting. You still have that completive spirit down deep to make your best shot one at a time, However fire an entire string of shots as one. If that makes any sense.. anyway I have fired the Sig P226 and the P220. Both Excellent pistols, One thing I like about the 9mm though, It's cheap!! I Valium Cast and you can get a lot of effective accurate shooting out of that round without busting the Bank. Components combined with a Dillon 550B press and in short time you have ammo cans full of rounds ready to go. I thoroughly enjoy the beauty of Northern Nevada, You are living the Dream Guy. I wanted a 226 back in the day, when I went to purchase one they were pulled back by the government to use in the DEA, Secrete Service and others. The quality is amazing. Instead, last month I bought a P320 and it blew up on the 16th shot. SIG said it was from an " over powered" round. The only parts that did not sustain damage was the barrel and trigger group. This would not have been the case with the 226. How did this pass tests with the military, seems like a delicate weapon.
I carry a SIG P226 40 cal. everyday This was a vary good video.
I'm jealous"the Sig P226 is also my fave gun" especially the West GERMAN one! I owned a Sig P229 an older one in .40 cal I bought used' it was made in 1996" never had a hiccup" I sold it and have regretted it ever since' I now own a bunch of Glocks'

I carried a P226 for years on duty. I switched to the P320 about 6 months ago. I'm not going back. The P226 was a good gun and was one of the best for it's time. But DA/SA is obsolete now. It's all about striker fired today and the P320 is arguably the best of the bunch.
NathanaelFaunce da/sa isn't obsolete! A good hmmer DA trigger pull (first shot) is an awesome "safety" for many people who conceal carry, especially for those who appendix carry.

My brother has one and now I need it! My possibly unpopular opinion: I have to say though I do think the S&W 5906 and maybe even the Ruger P89 can go toe to toe with it. The P226 definitely has a better DA pull than those two though in my opinion.

Sigs don't need rails; unless you plan on shooting at night alot. Also. good luck finding a holster for one with holographic sights and lasers.
I could never get over the d/a, s/a thing so I just do s/a only or d/a only. Works for me. Yes Sig makes fine handguns.
This is my favorite pistol, but there is one little mistake here: it was designed in West Germany. Sig Sauer is a partnership between the swiss SIG and the german JP Sauer&Sohn. Swiss guns never sold outside of switzerland because they made them too expensively. JP Sauer&Sohn on the other hand had developed techniques to produce high quality guns efficiently, partially because they were competing with Walther, Mauser and later H&K. The Sig Sauer P226 shares a lot of features from pistols JP Sauer&Sohn produced before their partnership with SIG. So it's more "Sauer" than "SIG" (which sounds weird).
The Sig Sauer P226 Chamber in .40 S&W became available somewhere in the 1990's
