Sig p226 it's the holy grail of handguns...iconic, precise, reliable. With the Glock 17 and Beretta 92 it is part of holy trinity of 20th century of handguns.
Yes. HK and CZ fans have to understand this. Sit at the kids table and enjoy the meal. It's GLOCK, Beretta, Sig and Smith. Don't worry my beloved FN is at kiddy table too.
Bought a lightly used (police trade in) West German P226 for $350...have put many thousands of rounds through it and it has worked pretty much flawlessly for over 15 years...will never sell it.
I inherited my fathers sig p226. The one he used when he was with the sheriffs department. He has sense retired and passed. Definitely agree with you, what a fantastic gun.
Few people know that several times a year the Sig Custom Shop offers deep discounts on the price of working on your Sig pistols. Back in 2012 I sent my police trade in Sig P229 .40 S&W in for some custom work done on my P229. I had the custom shop do the Action Enhancement Package, Night Sight Package (SIGLITE), Short Reset Trigger package, and their Full Service Package done to my pistol. It took less than 10 days to have my pistol shipped to Sig and back to me. They also polished the feed ramp while they had the pistol there for no charge. At the time my Sig was over 10 years old and the night sights were nonexistent. All in all I ended up with pretty much a brand new P229 (except for wear and tear of course) for several hundred dollars cheaper than a brand new P229 thanks to the discounts. This is my carry pistol and I trust my life with it.
I bought a West German made P 226 in 1992. They are considered a West German pure version if manufactured date is before 3 October 1995. They also have several distinct features from the ones manufactured after 1995 and the US: Serial # is engraved in three places: slide, receiver and barrel; there are no plastic parts (such as the new style short mainspring seat or recoil spring guide) they have proof marks of place and year of manufacture (mine has made in Kiel in 1991 marks) and the pistols are engraved "Made in W. Germany". Recently, I change mainspring strut, mainspring and seat with current versions and reduced the factory original spring from 24 Lbs in W German pistols to anywhere from 16 lbs to 21 lbs (current factory is 21 lbs and I installed an 18 lbs spring). If you like the 24 lbs spring, then you love the 21 lbs or an 18 lbs spring. I also changed the original trigger bar spring for the looped current version and new stocks. It is still the same pistol but with great DA pull and slightly lower SA pull. The changes made a great pistol even better. I had to do something similar to my 1986 Beretta 92 F. My hand are now 68 years old and the 15 lbs trigger DA pulls are not conducive to good shooting, specially if you have suffered from trigger finger (stenosis of the tendon channel) which weaken the index finger. I am a retired federal LEO and I like to shoot the first round in DA with semi autos and DA with revolvers. I like my Beretta 92 but my W German P 226 is a classic jewel. Enjoy yours, I think they are better made.
Iraqveteran8888 I too am the proud owner of one of the older Sig P226 in 9mm. Mine is one of the German made models with a factory nickel slide. It has had a extensive trigger job and it is a real pleasure to shoot. Thanks so very much for sharing your knowledge and your thoughts with us!
I am in love with my classic German p226, it has never let me down. I have let very few friends fire my pistol and each one has went hunting for their own to enjoy, and believe me it is a joy to fire and take down for cleaning. 226 for life.
Eric, I have. A Sig P6, a single stack W.German 9mm. Looks eerily similar to the 226. Really accurate firearm and a keeper. Shoots most all HP,s except Hornady.
That moment when you remember you paid $900 dollars for your West German sig 226 in .357 SIG used and the guy with every gun you ever wanted finds a 9mm one for $400.....#feelsbadman
A real thoroughbred of a pistol. Made to gallop, not walk or trot. Own and owned 7 P226's over the years. Just totally outstanding pistol. You guys did a great job in your video. Congrats.
As I understand it both the Beretta and the Sig passed the acceptance trials with flying colors. The best of the two being the Sig 226. The decision came down to the Beretta being about $25 per gun cheaper than the Sig. Since both passed all the requirements of the test, the Beretta won the contract at a substantial savings to the American taxpayer. Love them both and every pistol buff should have at least one of each
Jeff Barnett The Beretta was 3 million more then the Sigs. Beretta famously dropped their price 18% at the last minute, but even with that drop, they were more expensive then sig. There is a lot of interesting history around this trial and all the supposedly shady shit that went down. Price leaks, foreign government pressure...crazy stuff.
Jeff Barnett No prob. The June 1986 GAOs "Report to the Committee on Governemnet Operations" titled "PISTOL PROCUREMENT: Allegations on Army Selection of Beretta 9-mm. as Standard DOD Sidearm" is super interesting and contains a ton of info. It's available to download as a pdf and is well worth the read. For example, the Sig was 50% more reliable overall then Beretta (Sig P226 scored a 2,877 to the Beretta's 1,750 to the Colt M1911A1s 162. The numbers reflect the average number of rounds fired between stoppages). And they still picked the LESS reliable, MORE expensive Beretta! Insanity...
I picked up a P226 police trade-in .357 Sig with a SRT for under $400 dollars. A .40 conversion is a simple barrel swap away. Bar-Sto makes 9mm barrels and you can get a caliber x-change kit if you want a complete slide, barrel, and recoil spring to simply swap off the slide.
Sportsmans Outdoor Superstore carries lots of law enforcement trade in pistols and shotguns. That's where I got my Glock 22 and S&W M&P 40 and I've seen them with Sigs plenty of times as well
About 8 years ago I bought a new P226R Tactical (Made in US/NH), paid just over 1K for it and I will have to say I was disappointed to discover that the slide rattles when shaken. Can't even compare to a W. German made P228 that I boght back in 94' with over 1K rounds... So, yeah! in my experience old European imports are definitely a better build.
I scored a West German made Sig P226 in a pawnshop back in June this year and I love it. Excellent piece of military history and just historical in general being marked West German. Definitely going to be in my collection for life and I’ve actually been daily carrying it since I got it. Love your content! Keep it up guys! PS I really need some grip screws but haven’t had any luck. Have ordered multiple sets and they’re all too large in diameter for the older guns
I have a 2nd model P226 police trade in , still want a 3rd model with the rail mount and 3 dot tritium night sights. I have fired alot of handguns but the 226 is the Cadillac of them all.
Had mine in 40 S&W for a dozen years - marvelous pistol. Never had it stick or fail using top notch ammo. Just don't cram crummy ammo down its throat - of course no steel cases, jams it tight.
My duty gun p226, brought me home one night! I'll always have it. Just cleaned it and put new night sights on it this week. Bought in 1980 or so? Still great today!
My father is a retired LEO. His first duty gun was a West German Sig P226. He always said the gun was a joy to shoot and ridiculously accurate, but a pain to conceal once he became a detective. When I was younger, I would sneak off with one of his Sig mags and unload and reload it multiple times to practice loading pistol magazines. Don’t think the old man ever found out, maybe I’ll tell him one of these days.
The "Lyson's Corner" 226 9mm are very rare! The story from Sig Sauer Germany is that 200 of the first batch had the miss print on the frame instead of Tyson's Corner and about 70 where shipped by mistake to the US before it was caught, Sig destroyed the rest. It's only going to keep going up in valve.
The price was one issue in choosing the M9. Additionally, early warning middle detection bases in Italy played a role, Sig refused to put a plant in the USA and the lack of an manuel safety played a major role in the decision. I shot the M9 from 86-99 and it wasn't anywhere near the Sig in any area. I can recall having major issues with the Slides coming off. One one if my deployments to the Far East we had to keep round counts on our M9's and they had to be xrayed after 1000 rounds. Keep in mind folks the military buys from the lowest bidder. Inhave owned my 89 Sig for almost 30 years and it still does it's job. Great video! Semper Fi
She's probably due for some fresh springs. That's why the trigger is "mushy" and the slide didn't lock back at times. Neither should be the case. The minimum I do when picking up an older pistol is replace the recoil spring. Probably wouldn't hurt to go through it entirely.
Just picked up a West German made, LE trade in last week, from my FLGS! ( No importation marks on it.) Came with 5 magazines & a Safariland holster. $595 out the door!!
Some Officers and Counter-Intel guys were issued the P226 in Iraq in 2010-2011 (as the M11). I found it to be MUCH more comfortable than the M9 and, while both work well for me, I prefer the SIG.
The Swedish police forces use the P22x series since the late 80's / early 90's, when it replaced the Walther PPKs they were previously armed with. The Swedish military Went with the Glock 17/19 instead, but i like the P226/229 better.
Having owned both WG and newer versions of the 226, all I can say is they're damn nice guns. Trying to say one is better than the other would be hard for me as I've not had one I didn't really like. The Sig platform is top of the line.
I've had a p226 W. German pistol forever. Mine was one of those factory certified trade ins that come with that Sig band around the grip. I always really liked it, but over time Glock 17 offered consistent trigger pull, low bore axis and higher mag capacity. Well now you can get the SRT trigger, MecGar 18rd mags and the E1 grip, to fix all these issues. Made it an amazing pistol all over again. I thought it was amazing how Sig was able offer such a huge upgrade with just drop in parts. I highly recommend this sort of refresh. Way lighter as an old W. German, vs the new billet slide with railed frame too.
Even guys that shoot a lot anticipate recoil. Saw Eric do it here. Also for the slide lock issue just scratch the springs in the mags back out. It's from sitting loaded for years
Totally agree on the P226 over the M9. My step-grandpa was a champion pistol shooter in the 70's and when I was young he showed me his West German made Sig P226 and told me, "West German made Sig Sauer's are the finest made pistols in the world. Now I am personally a CZ fanboy, but I think the P226 is a fantastic pistol, and better than an M9 in almost every way.
Get one of these surplus pistols for a bargain, get an aftermarket trigger and sights of one's liking and get the piece robarized or cerrakoted and you'll have an uberkuhl 9mm handgun for sure.. I'd love one..
No, the Sig didn't make it through the test in the eighties but the military didn't want Beretta to be the sole bidder so they allowed Sig to continue in the process but they were also outbid. The entire testing details are available online.
What a super back yard you have - really envy your situation. The Sig W-German is something to appreciate for it's quality and it's history, being made when stupid USSR controlled East Berlin until the wall came down in 1989. Thanks.
I have a Legion SAO P226, and two P229’s in .40 S&W. They’re great pistols, and all have the SRT. The LGS has a few stamped slide German made P series, and I’m considering getting one. Edit: I have two M9’s and a 92 Compact, with every WC upgrade I could install. I really can’t say which brand I prefer, and carry them all.
I think the age and amount of use that pistol has had, being a police trade in, is affecting your trigger feel. (Of course, you probably know that). Excellent guns all around. Sig makes great stuff. I'm really interested to see how the lawsuit from New Jersey regarding the 229 goes.
Joshua Dippel lmao. i agree with you! im heading into the coast guard after college and they use the sig. but my love for the original m9 will never end.
The 220 is in 9mm, there was a .45 version made by SIG but it was marginal compared to the 9mm. Then SIG USA made them in .45 and that's the one you see today. But the majority of 220 in the world are single stack 8 shots 9mm with tail mag release (like the p210). And they are still in use in the swiss army. EDIT: The 22X series not locking the slide to the rear is a classic, it meand your right thumb is resting on the slide stop, it's very hard to feel and with a modern shooting stance it nearly always does that. You can either fix your grip (if you work with it every day) or just deal with the fact that it won't hold open. When it goes click, just reload, like an AK, there is 99.999999% chance you are out of ammo.
I love my P226. Mine has the German frame with an American made slide and is in .357SIG and I have the .40S&W barrel for easy caliber swaps. I have always wanted a All German version of the 226. I regret selling my P220 in .38Super.
1988 West German SIG Sauer P226, 9mm. I own a new HK, a WWI Colt Model 1911, blah blah, Ruger Walther, '78 Series 70, blah blah. The P226 is the one I'd grab in an emergency; the HK is a close second.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think you can mount the slide and barrel of a "P226 Tactical" on the normal frame, which would give you a threaded barrel and adjustable sights.
Nice video. you can never go wrong with a Sig. I'd love to see you guys do a video on the Springfield Professional 1911 sometime--the most rigorously tested service pistol in US history.
Sig p226 it's the holy grail of handguns...iconic, precise, reliable. With the Glock 17 and Beretta 92 it is part of holy trinity of 20th century of handguns.
Pennywisdom Dome HK USP? No? Okay.
Pennywisdom Dome cz75 is better than all of those. It's the best 9mm handgun bar none.
I'd personally take any of them.
Pennywisdom Dome you're forgetting the og the p35 high power!
Yes. HK and CZ fans have to understand this. Sit at the kids table and enjoy the meal. It's GLOCK, Beretta, Sig and Smith. Don't worry my beloved FN is at kiddy table too.

I own a MK25. Best handgun I've ever shot, period.
W. German 1988 vintage P226 here. Best $300 I've ever spent. That trigger is amazing.
fuguf1sh -- my dad gave me his 1987 W German 226. Absolutely love it. Been in love with that pistol since the first time I fired it years ago.
I inherited my fathers sig p226. The one he used when he was with the sheriffs department. He has sense retired and passed. Definitely agree with you, what a fantastic gun.

Over $600 now
@rogerwatson4221 picked one up from aimsurplus for $420 last week.
@@rogerwatson4221 ~350 on gun broker
Eric, I have. A Sig P6, a single stack W.German 9mm. Looks eerily similar to the 226. Really accurate firearm and a keeper. Shoots most all HP,s except Hornady.
Also known as the P225, they are basically a single stack P226, great guns, allot of them were German Police sidearms
from personal experience, the p226 is one of my favorite handguns on earth
That moment when you remember you paid $900 dollars for your West German sig 226 in .357 SIG used and the guy with every gun you ever wanted finds a 9mm one for $400.....#feelsbadman

Back in the 80s this was the best and also one of the very expensive pistols. Great memories.
What is the best place to find these surplus guns?
Blake that should be a video
Blake Switzerland. Every gunshop over here has a few of them.
SIG 220s yes, 226 less so.

Real men appendix carry 500 SW magnum hammer cocked to single action.
Darth Doge you won't be considered a man long...
hahah!
Darth Doge pfft I carry 500 nitro express sub nose, and that's just the back up.
With a cold steel espada XL as a pocket knife too.
That's nothing, i carry God's Word in my pocket.
I have a 2nd model P226 police trade in , still want a 3rd model with the rail mount and 3 dot tritium night sights. I have fired alot of handguns but the 226 is the Cadillac of them all.
Considering the p226 has been the British SAS choice of sidearm for many years proves how good it is.
Had mine in 40 S&W for a dozen years - marvelous pistol. Never had it stick or fail using top notch ammo. Just don't cram crummy ammo down its throat - of course no steel cases, jams it tight.

I love my Sig. I like lots of firearms... but I love my Sig.
love my surplus 226s. I have a "Lyson's" mud railed 226 that is SWEET
Mrgunsngear Channel Man you've made me spend my money on plenty of old Sigs. The best for sure!
just purchased the 226 RX
The "Lyson's Corner" 226 9mm are very rare! The story from Sig Sauer Germany is that 200 of the first batch had the miss print on the frame instead of Tyson's Corner and about 70 where shipped by mistake to the US before it was caught, Sig destroyed the rest. It's only going to keep going up in valve.
I love how you can hear the reset so clearly.
I have a p226 and I love it. I have a glock 17 and a glock 21 but the p226 is a superior gun as far as accuracy and trigger pull.

I love my p226! Very nice fit in my hand and I love the ergonomics. Gotta love the classic trade ins. Great vid guys!!!
TheOutdoorGuy Are you left handed.
JOHNNYBEERHANDS S No I am not, I am a proud righty 😁
My 226 in .357 Sig is my most cherished handgun, thank you for this, peace.
put a SRT trigger in there. and replace the sights. I'd also change all the springs out.
Great guns! A p226r was the first handgun I bought and love it.
The P220 started off as a 9mm. Sigs had slide breaks as did the M9 when using proof loaded ammo.
These guns are just so good looking
She's probably due for some fresh springs. That's why the trigger is "mushy" and the slide didn't lock back at times. Neither should be the case. The minimum I do when picking up an older pistol is replace the recoil spring. Probably wouldn't hurt to go through it entirely.

The MK 25 was my first auto pistol. Great handgun
Some Officers and Counter-Intel guys were issued the P226 in Iraq in 2010-2011 (as the M11). I found it to be MUCH more comfortable than the M9 and, while both work well for me, I prefer the SIG.
The P 226 has a much wider an better holding grip then my good old 1911, I want one!
Someday...hopefully I will have one of these. Also...I am envious of your "auto-reloader"!!
The Swedish police forces use the P22x series since the late 80's / early 90's, when it replaced the Walther PPKs they were previously armed with. The Swedish military Went with the Glock 17/19 instead, but i like the P226/229 better.
I picked up a used 228 from a local pawn shop and it is one of my favorite guns to shoot. Made in Germany 1995 from searching the serial number.
Tens of thousands of rounds through my old west german and it still runs like a champ.
My favorite gun. I think the pistols from 75-99 were the best ever made.
Sickend Sour yea just don’t forget about the 1911
Having owned both WG and newer versions of the 226, all I can say is they're damn nice guns. Trying to say one is better than the other would be hard for me as I've not had one I didn't really like. The Sig platform is top of the line.
I think the P226 is the Best 9mm pistol that was Ever Made
I own the 92fs and the 226R. I love both. Neither beats the other for me
Same here. The beretta is a sexier pistol tho. The sig is like an f350 and the beretta is like a ferrari
I agree I love all hammer fired sigs and the beretta m 9, I have no preference.
I'm with a State Police Agency, we run the Sig229 with 357 sig but going to the Sig 320 very soon.
Va state police? I was an intern in division 3 and we qualified on the 320s when they got them
Sig legion 226 my favorite pistol ever.
I've had a p226 W. German pistol forever. Mine was one of those factory certified trade ins that come with that Sig band around the grip. I always really liked it, but over time Glock 17 offered consistent trigger pull, low bore axis and higher mag capacity.
The Sig P226 and P220 were my duty weapons during my tenure with INS.
that is my favorite handgun - if you can tell from my screen name..
Love you too much Eric.
You taught me to how reload P226 pistol when the slide lock.
Pull back slide for slide lock reload .
I have the Legion SAO and they really upgraded the trigger. Love this gun
The Sig, 226, is an awesome pistol, as is the 228, and one of my family’s favorite pistols, the P-6 (225)!
amen, on sig over Beretta. first chance I got to sign out a 1911 it was my carry piece!!
Love Sig. Have a P228 and would never sell it.
What’s the 228?
I think the age and amount of use that pistol has had, being a police trade in, is affecting your trigger feel. (Of course, you probably know that). Excellent guns all around. Sig makes great stuff. I'm really interested to see how the lawsuit from New Jersey regarding the 229 goes.
After shooting both, 226 has a certain type of feel that is just better. I still love baretta but sig is very well build and ergonomics wise, is great
Love the 226, but Eric you're hurting my old surplus beretta 92s' feelings!
Joshua Dippel lmao. i agree with you! im heading into the coast guard after college and they use the sig. but my love for the original m9 will never end.
I put a short action reset kit in mine from sig., made the pistol perfect!
I own the P228. Used to own the P226. Both fantastic
The police force in my province (Canada) uses the sig p226. My father was a police officer for 28 years and never had to use it
This pistol seems to be a real keeper, judging by both the accuracy and smiles on your faces
As a Glock guy, it's hard getting used to the P226 DA/SA trigger. But once you get the hang of it, it's pretty sweet.
nice to see something good come out of NH
I'm not 100% sure, but I think you can mount the slide and barrel of a "P226 Tactical" on the normal frame, which would give you a threaded barrel and adjustable sights.
Nice video. you can never go wrong with a Sig.
I'd love to see you guys do a video on the Springfield Professional 1911 sometime--the most rigorously tested service pistol in US history.
Got one and added the Sig SRT trigger and refurbishment package and cerakoted slide. Better than a 1911.
i have the p226 DA/SA legion and it will always be my favorite.
Short reset trigger kit + 18rd mec-gar mags = perfect P226.
13:51 "I shoot the gun better in double action than I do in single action" **miss** --> Me every time I shoot double action
My favorite handgun .hands down
My first ever handgun was a Sig P226, Swiss Police trade in. Miss that thing
My favorite handgun. Sig Sauer is an amazing firearms company. I wish they would stop moving away from the .357 Sig round, but everyone wants 9mm.
You could never go wrong with Sig P226.
I have a like new Mk 25, 226 and I love it ! Great shooter and I bought some 20 rd mags as well as 15 rd.
Don't forget that ruger had a pistol in that contract hunt to replace the 1911. I have one. It was the ruger p85.
You need a spring repair kit, replace all the springs, maybe new grips and you got yourself a really nice pistol.
Hi-power vs CZ 75 vs Beretta 92 vs Sig 226 vs HK USP vs S&W 5906 vid?
and now we're adopting the sig
Looks like a nice "add" to my arsenal. Sweet, classic firearm.
0:20 That is just a beautiful sound.
Also, you have to put the dot on the target, not the top of the sight.
Nice. I prefer milled slides because of better durability and not having to replace those pins.
