Elizabeth of York is one of my favorite women. I truly admire her for being brave enough to cope with a very turbulent childhood, marrying Henry Tudor, and having 8 children, 5 of whom survived into adult life. I have wondered what would have happened if Prince Arthur had survived his illness and become King of England. Apparently he was considered to have very good leadership skills. Not so much for Henry VIII - he was too full of his egotistical pride and lust for power regardless of the consequences. I think she would have been very pleased with Elizabeth Tudor in many ways. Enough said on my soapbox! Thank you for your excellent work Jon! 👏 😊
I find Elizabeth of York a very interesting woman. I wonder how things would have worked out if her son Prince Arthur would have lived. Maybe she wouldn’t have been in a rush to have another male heir. She may have lived much longer & who knows what kind of King Prince Arthur might have been. These two things would totally change Englands history!
Elizabeth of York was a very important woman of her day. I wished she could have lived longer. Maybe she could have calmed Henry down a bit! Thank you Jon for an awesome video. 😊
The death of his mother left a profound impact on Henry when he was a teen. I'd bet he would've been a different man and king if she were around a little longer. Especially instead of Margaret Beaufort, who, while a dedicated grandmother to Prince Henry, was also quite scheming. He learned a lot from both women.
Agreed it wasn’t a Disney fairy tale if you were born a Tudor, Stuart and Valois princess. These women were right at the center of dynastic rivalries and religious conflicts that were often bloody.
@@juliie007Right on. Have you watched Queen Margot with Isabelle Adjani? I'll never mix up "The Three Henri" ever again! What a life! And don't get me started on George III's six daughters.
This is fabulous history. I only found your channel through one of my subscribers and I'm looking forward to catching up on some of your older films. Love the thumbnails by the way.
Thank you for an excellent video about Elizabeth of York. My favourite period of British history is the Wars of the Roses. There are so many interesting and influential women during this period with Elizabeth being no exception. She contributed significantly in the establishment, and acceptance, of Henry VII as king, despite his poor claim to the throne, and thus ensured the rise of the Tudor period.
I think you have some good points. Henry loved his mother very much. I feel if she had been around, the respect he had for her may have tricked down, and he may not have ( possibly) ended up married so much. Elizabeth genuinely loved Katherine of Aragon( her last child was named for her) so i believe she would have encouraged Henry to make that marriage work.
All the people who lived during the wars of the roses rode the wheel of fortune. Rise and fall. I sometimes wonder if one of the pretenders had been Elizabeths brother if she would deny them once Elizabeth had children of her own if she . That’s for the video!
Do you think that the trajectory of Henry VIII’s life would’ve been different if his mother had lived into his adulthood and ascension to the throne? Could she have influenced him in such a way that he wouldn’t have lavishly and irresponsibly spent everything that his father had worked so hard to amass after taking over a nearly bankrupt country from Richard III’s reign? Would he have treated women more respectfully than he did and been a more faithful husband to Katherine of Aragon as a result? While we can’t really know these answers it’s fun to dabble in a bit of conjecture! I personally think that Elizabeth of York was the most important woman in Henry’s life and that he would have behaved much differently and better if he had continued to have her love and excellent example before him throughout his life. I also think that if even if Henry had still divorced his first wife Elizabeth would’ve seen to it that Mary and Elizabeth would’ve been better treated in their younger years and not subjected to the emotional abuse from their father that resulted from his constantly changing his mind.
I love this video and how beautiful Elizabeth of York was. I tried to watch 'The White Queen' but I found it very boring, this video sums up all I need to know about her. Thank you.
@HistoryRoadshow No, thank you!! Do you think the obsession with the wives wasn't just about a son, but his beloved mother was the Perfect Consort (for the time) And in no way attempted to rule alongside her husband. In Anne Boleyn not only did she not give him a male heir after 3-4 pregnancies? I think. But she was jealous and attempted to rule beside him, Which he may have panicked that he married a woman "even worse" than before (Catherine of Aragon gave him no son past infancy but she shut her eyes and endured his cheating, but as the daughter of the Catholic Monarchs she expected to rule alongside him) I believe he found her in Jane Seymour, and he could have found her in Anne of Cleves but she wasn't 'as beautiful' although I think Anne was just as disgusted by him and his stanky leg ulcers. So he went for young, to "groom" Kitty Howard who made no attempt to rule and had no desire to rule (but in personality he found she was nothing like his mother) and push out Heir after Heir. But her affair with Culpepper was a Kill-able offense it became public he had no choice. By now he's REALLY old (again for the times) and most likely would have divorced again Was this all for just a Son? Or finding a woman who emulated the most Perfect Mother and Queen in his eyes? May I ask your opinion, Dear Sir?
@mediocremaiden8883 they do say that your life as a child is carried into adulthood. Depending on how his younger years were I would suggest had a profound effect on his later years. His wish for a son and heir came to fruition in time. Although he wouldn't have known how that ended. For Henry his soul goal in life was to have a boy heir to the throne. Although a painful human, he probably died in a contented way.
Elizabeth Woodville is my 16th great grandmother and thus Elizabeth of York is my 16th great aunt and her son Henry the VIII is my cousin 16 times removed.
