My theory is that they were so sick of everyone making fun of the twins, so they decided to make something way worse so that everyone shuts up about twins.
they really said "what if we made a killer thats unfun to play against, unfun to play, has poorly written lore, promotes the worst parts of the game, has bad cosmetics, and is overall terrible" then when that went poorly they went "WHAT????? WHY DOES NOBODY LIKE THE SKULL MERCHANT!?!?!?!??!"
Knight, in retrospect, is far less loathed. He was as cancerous as he was because three-genning was the only thing he could do. He's more powerful now, and people really don't complain about him anymore. This is partly because Skull Merchant took his spot as "horribly underpowered zone control killer whose only viable strategy is 3-genning".
the knight is 100x worse and the hate the skull merchant gets is 80% bandwagon lol at least the drones can’t fucking hit you unlike his guards. it’s just drop guard at loop and make survivor hold w that’s boring
@@GorbombZombayjust btw, bc ive noticed a lot of ppl dont know this. The knights company cant come after you when you unhook. When you start to unhook, they will stop moving. So, its proxy camping, but just wait till they get as far away as possible, then go unhook and you should be fine unless the knight is there
It's not that she's underpowered. It's that her 3 genning is overpowered. She's legitimately good at 3 genning. Her power sucks at everything else so your point is received, but people don't 3 gen with her cuz she sucks in chase. They 3 gen with her because she is busted at it.
The worst thing about the match with cm9i is that he even made several mistakes in the match, yet Eternal could barely get a win in under 1 hour. Absolutely no other killer in Dead By Daylight could accomplish (or almost accomplish) a win against Eternal making as many mistakes as cm9i did.
Exactly, he played like shit and he had no idea how to play against a coordinated team bc he only stomps pubs. It’s ridiculous that he is able to play like that with no skill whatsoever
@Gremiyun I had a few times waaaay b4, where I had to defend 3 gens. Alot of back and forth and I thankfully i had dying and thanato. I won, but in this one time where I took place on the farm map with the crash silo and big ass farm house. All 3 gens were situated by the silo
I had a SM 3 gen game last night where after the game she called us losers and got upset that we went to a corner to bleed out. Like, if you wanna waste our time, we will gladly waste yours too. She also denied having a 3gen because she didn't run eruption when she literally ran overbrine and oppression. I think their brains are slowly rotting.
mfers will play what is probably by far the most boring braindead loser strategy in the game then get mad when the other team doesn't congratulate them
@@DontCallMeGaga.043 gens can be done as soon as the match starts, all the killer needs is to guard the 3 close gens. Sure 4 will get done but at the end of the day the 3 gen will still happen and there's nothing you can really do
What I really hope is that this isn't a case where she's just left as is and forgotten for years on end, with only occasional addon nerfs and such. I personally barely see her as is, but it would be nice if the few times I do there wasn't 1: DCs, 2: 3 gens, 3: People being insanely toxic toward the SM player just for playing the character. She's talked about a lot and cited as problematic because people want her to change for the better, not because they mindlessly hate her. Really good video btw, very well explained and I loved the editing 👌👌
There is honestly nothing good about skull merchant. Her power works terribly, her lore makes no sense, and she has an awful design. She just needs a rework from the ground up. Just make her a whole new killer.
Her power def works but the killer design and lore just feel so lazy. It' actually embarrassing how bad SM is and hopefully whoever came up with the story and design are fired, it is literally that bad. Just doesn't feel like DBD and more like some netflix original thirst trap or Fortnite character.
@@StinkyPoopyMcFartFacethat's a good comparison, a fortnite thirst trap. Her design is so lazy, lacks direction and comes off as desperate. Like "oh look at me, I like manga, I'm so quirky. And my hips are the size of watermelons for some reason"
I don't mind her visually but her power is basically beyonc saving Lore has some cool elements but focuses on the wrong things. Not the worst in dbd imo
they definitely knew what they were doing. I also find it hilarious that one of her perks literally starts with "Like in business, you profit most when those around you suffer most."
I am surprised Skrump knows pre reworked doctor. The OG 3 gen holder with his madness. Back then snapping out was a healing action that worked with nurses calling. Making him a solid 3 gen character with area denial on his treatment stance. He also had an addon that tier 3 granted exhaustion. It was an interesting time. Seeing he was the only zoning character capable of doing that during that time. The old days.
people literally put on calm spirit and the game was different with exhaustion perks. I played against him numberous times and because i didnt suffer from exhaustion and just had a timer that would go down even in chase made Doctor one of the worst killers. Until bloodlust came into play
This killer just screams that they thought they were going to get the predator liscence and then something happened and they didnt want to feel like they wasted their time
Rework her ability, instead of drone controlling points make the drones follow survivors that marks them on her little radar and makes her move faster towards marked targets but she can’t get killer instinct from marked targets. You could even have addons that replace the base effects with like a flashbang effect on survivors or reverse controls, have fun with it.
Her power is based on monitoring points of interest (gens mostly) + some chase potential (which is easily dealt with by ShiftW). Since survivors cannot finish gens in 5 to 7 minutes and bully killer into depression, they deem that killer unfun. Happened to Knight, happened to SM, happens to Onryo now. So yeah, good fn luck whining and not adapting.
@@djekdozovitch3679 did we watch the same video? No killer should let you hold the game hostage for almost a full hour against one of the best team with mid to low effort.
@@djekdozovitch3679And all skull merchant has to do is patroll a small area constantly reactivating her drones if she notices people running away from her goal of protecting. She's not fun to go against. Adapting won't change She's just inherently not fun to fight. Wesker has a fun chase power, so does dredge, and Singilarity, while Knight is a mixed bag. He's still at least interesting. Skull merchant is just sit and wait for things to happen
I think they should make her drones like the zombies for Nemesis, 3 of them patrolling the map with a sweeping scanner that people can sneak around/dodge. And if they get spotted they get tagged for the merchant to follow, gives them a hunting power, slowdown, and the inability to camp 3 gens with 3 drones as they're more of a passive thing.
honestly I don't care about her being annoying to face against or her power being bad. I just want them to change her horrible design. Her outfit, animation, mori, backstory, alt skins are so bad and terribly designed. She has got to be the ugliest killer in the game and thats saying alot when there's killers like nemesis and twins.
Skull Merchant is making Dredge look good looking lmao. At least her alt masks make her look better but money shouldn’t be needed (and I mean physically dredge has a better power)
I don't think you can really "undo" things like th design and backstory. And lets be real if the default was too good, no one would buy new 20 dollars skins...because Behavior needs more money
First time watching this channel and I'm already invested! I love the cool art style and avatar, plus the video is put together really well. On top of that, it's really enjoyable listening to Skrump just talk. Can't wait to see more and couldn't agree more with everything said in this video!
Skull merchant is so horribly flawed that it actually allows me to play her as a chase killer sometimes because people assume I'm going to use her effectively. A good chunk of survivors automatically assume I'm going to three gen from the start and that combined with their absolute horrible map knowledge made apparent by the gens they focus out, usually let me play the start of the game without instantly setting up a three gen. I can place a drone at literally ANY gen, and bad survivors go "OOGA BOOGA MUST BE THREE GEN" and deactivate the drone so i get a speed buff in my chases while trying to bomb rush that gen DESPITE it not even being a three gen. It's literally a reverse three gen that turns into a three gen where by not defending a three gen, you create a three gen because most of the times survivors just don't stop to think you could have set a drone up at anywhere else but a three gen.
Unless a survivor is using deja vu or has countless hours on each map,, it’s not possible to tell which gens are closest in proximity once the match begins. So instead of calling those survivors who are trying to attack the gens you are setting up the drones at “bad” how about just giving yourself a little more credit for thinking outside the box and tricking the field. But to call a survivor “bad” for attacking the gen where a drone is set up is a little much. Obviously they are trying to be aggressive and knock away the killers strat. Can’t knock them for that. As you said, 95% of SM are actually setting up the drones on the ones they wanna protect. So ofc, the survivor is gonna wanna try and take that away if possible. Obviously survivors can’t see the auras of all the gens at all times like a killer can, so knowing which is the actual 3 gen isn’t easy to identify. But again, good on you for going against the grain and doing things a bit differently. Well played
@@hectorbaez8451 as someone who plays WAY more survivor than i do killer. . . Yes, you are a bad survivor if you can't quickly tell what is and isn't a three gen without deja vu. One of the many issues dead by daylight has is that it makes three gens naturally and it is a skill you will pick up the longer you play to notice it. The only reason you shouldn't be able to have a sense for which gens will most likely be three gens is if you are either new, bad, or not playing to win. Most my matches are people bringing in sweaty stuff with decent prestiges on their characters so they clearly don't fit the new or not playing to win groups lol. You do not need countless hours on each map when if you look out for gens you can usually get a good sense of gen locations for each map within about 6ish games especially since on most maps a gen is usually guaranteed to spawn in some spots. Deja vu is definitely good for learning three gens quicker and helping prevent them, but once you've learned them you shouldn't be unable to recognize their general areas without it.
@@hectorbaez8451 I just draw a mental image in my head with 3 x 3 tile in my head like tic tac toe. You start with the middle and try to remove one generator from the center of North West South and East.
they need to rework her entirely. redo her default outfit, redo her chase/lobby theme. redo her lore. give her an actual cool mori. rework her power. actually make her name MAKE SENSE because nothing besides her drones having skulls make her name make sense. i’d rather go against 10 nurses in a row. at least those matches are super quick and you can move on to the next game asap.
Also since hostage taking is a bannable offense, why is Behavior not banning these SM players since they do literally that? They hold the game hostage where there is nothing you can do since she refuses to down and only kick gens until 1 hour is up and the game auto ends. It's the definition of holding a game hostage but they get away with it and brag about it.
they’re using her power, it’s not like bhvr will ban people for using a killer’s power in the most efficient way. pretty sure hostage taking refers to probably body blocking survivors for the whole match
@@Longshot441 in most cases yes, a killer will do it just to be toxic. however there are other reasons (slug strats, no hook nearby), like you said, it’s only toxic if ALL players are down and all of them are left to bleed out, assuming the killer isn’t even trying to find and hook them.
The problem with his opinion is the servers don’t last in public lobbies we don’t actually know if they will last in a custom game for more than an hour and I’m not testing it
I feel she wouldn’t be so bad if the drones didn’t expose or she could cycle through the drones like the singularity and get some sort of speed boost or something for catching survivors herself in the drone cams
I feel since we got xenomorph after the singularity and recently dbd has been doing one licensed then one original killer I still highly suspect that in the concept phase of skull merchant she was gonna be based on predator but maybe because of Prey or they couldn't use certain characters likeness that didn't happen. The characters in the chapter are also from South America as well which lines up with where the og movie takes place. Way too many things line up
the only thing I can think of for SM and her drones is to take out the exposing status effect on survivors. It still gives skull merchant the info that a survivor is in one of her drone areas without punishing the survivor completely for trying to do a gen. perhaps add a slow down to their running speed instead while in the drone radius. idk im just glad I rarely face her
At 12:05 you say that skull merchant was damage control for people who like the 3 gen strat, but i disagree purely since it takes behavior usually an entire year to produce a completed killer. Just a coincidence not causation
I think the drones shouldn't expose you, but give survivors a basekit ruin effect and give her immediate lingering haste when in range - would still be good for gen defense and also chase making it versatile
Oh god I just hate that player that did that it makes it even worse for skullmerchant mains like myself (not someone who 3 gens i use the drones for chase or to cover areas on gens that are being worked on which typically are 1-2 but never 3 i neglect that from happening) but this right here that 1 hour game is the reason why I want her to be fixed to be more of a chase killer with stealth instead of bullshit to be used as a toxic killer im tired of it and it truly pisses me off . I understand everyone's current opinions as to why they hate skullmerchant they just didn't do her right and I'm hoping she gets reworked to be more likable
Very very very well made video, you made excellent points, described everything perfectly to people that may be new to the game or don't understand some of the techniques and concepts with really good editing, I will be subscribing as I hope to see more of this content.
Holy- This is a top tier video, well done and I’m super excited to see your big project As for SM, a fun idea could be to make the drones stealthed when not active, reduce the active time to 5-6 seconds, and a 20sec cooldown per activation (while keeping the radar thing). This would make the drones more like ambush traps, giving a small window of opportunity for the killer to get an edge on a healthy survivor, but removing their oppressive lockdown abilities of current (and the radar would allow her to know the approx. whereabouts of survivors so she can plan ahead and force them into a trapped loop)
Unironically i think the way to fix her is to disable the DC penalty specifically to her. That way SM player can play vs bots. Fast, effective and easy fix.
As funny as that would be… no. At that point if you’re going to single her out like that just remove her from the game. Actually now that I mention it, not a bad idea lmao.
@@feckusmaximus3234 well, thats the point ... people already played and leveled her. You cant just delete a character like that. With my approach people can still volunteer to play against her but nobody is forced to. Alternatively... nerf her 3 gen to the ground even if that makes her the weakest killer, similar fate like twins then, nobody plays her anymore
Last night I played Skull merchant against a bully squad with an area defense build just for the lolz, longest match ever but according to the post match messages I managed to ruin their night.
Me too :D I wonder how they fix the 3gen tho huuuh cuz she’s defiantly getting tweaked at one point Imagine they rework and she ends up being the funnest killer cuz there’s so much potential cool stuff of wat they can do with drones
I liked her in concept but almost everything in terms of execution about her is so bad. I try to play her as fair as possible (Monitor choke points or mains or to force out of loop, not gens) but half of my games are people throwing immediately when they see who they're up against and I absolutely get it.
As someone who ran old old eruption the small incap was fine, i to this day have no idea why they buffed it so hard. At least its still decent post nerf and i can use it reliably still
I think the worst part about s.m. is that during her loading trailer has the drone following the 2 survivors. So mobile drones has crossed their minds. Also the event loading screens effectively said that "drones go brrrr"
Not the first time that happened. Look at Legions cinematic trailer and dev saying that a Killer turning into a survivor has was too easy to figure out lol. Also kinda funny since both killers felt like cosmetic bait on release.
I see the twins more than I see skull merchant. The twins was the least played character I have played against until the skull merchant release. I haven't even bothered trying to figure out when her perks are being used.
Skull Merchant was going to be someone I chose to main but every time I did a reverse three gen (force the last three gens to be spread with drones) the survivors would try to rush those droned gens. Was super frustrating as they basically three genned every time. Skull Merchant is 100% flawed and deserves the hate, but there are ways to play her differently. Hope they make her kit less prickly and dive deeper into her stealth and tracking abilities, I dislike the exposed drones and free info from it so I hope that gets trashed. I feel as though she'd be loved much more if her abilities had no ties to three gen chess and drones that punish you if you remove them or not. For now I main Pyramid Head, loving every second.
When it comes to eruption I have mixed feelings, while the perk was definitely over powered I do feel that it was necessary to counter Gen rushing. I think it lasted so long because they couldn’t exactly nerf gen rushing without pissing off most survivors, but those same survivors raged at gen regression perks. It’s a double edge topic where neither side of the table will be happy.
Honestly I appreciate this video, since it is very level-headed with making your arguments and without any pettiness. I personally actually really like playing Skull Merchant (I like stealth and setting up traps), but I've recently been avoiding playing her, since I don't like feeling like my opponents are not having fun while playing against me. I hope she doesn't get outright deleted or gets the Freddy treatment, hopefully the devs can find a way to rework her in a fun way.
I'm a Skull Merchant main since her first day release on ptb and i really like her but i totally understand the hate towards her and its sad that the caracter is hated that much i do love to play her as a chase killer and find it pretty fun.
What if they made it so that you can set a path the drones follow survivors and give her constant information, giving her a speed boost for each survivor the drone marks. Disabling it would give the survivor the exposed status effect for a lengthy amount of time, but a haste, making it risk/reward. Idc if that's a shitty idea, that's better than a 3-gen killer and might be annoying to deal with, but not soul destroying.
The expose status could be more of an add on than being in her main kit from the rework you mentioned. Instead of being exposed the hendured effect is the best option since you are being located and are easily tracked for her to see on her tracker
@@Margaritataz I think hindered is only good when you can have control over it (Wesker), or it's for a very short time (Clown). Otherwise, a lengthy (I was thinking 30-60s) hindered would be really annoying and unfun to go against. As unfun as Chess Merchant? LOL. But still, unfun regardless. Exposed is strong, but you have killers like Michael Myers who can get it on command and have a three other benefits yet still be weak. This combined with a short speed boost additive of people being tracked would require a lot more team coordination and loop smarts.
@@ViVerna oh shoot you're right I gotchu bro I understand lmao just trying to understand what you said as a skullmerchant that chases instead of holding the game hostage
Alright but here's a counter-point: What if a player wants to torture people legally? I feel like Skull Merchant fills that niche of players that want to play to fulfill their sadistic fantasies of hurting their fellow man, without going to jail. Aka Hellraiser minus the Pleasure. If survivors have full load-out SWF, killers have Skull Merchant, simple as that. And if you're not a prideful swf, you can just leave! Skull Merchant to DC is the truest combo a survivor can do to, only other combo being as broken being Nurse stomp to DC however the matches there simply last so little if you are unskilled that it doesn't matter. Anyways, it's simple as that!
Alot of her perks even seem geared for chase I mean besides oblivious and skillcheck addons they seem to be meant to be used while she's in a loop slowly building up exposed while blasting them with a speed increase and making her a very strong chase killer
I didn't know the backstory behind the Eternals v. CM9i when I watched Hens' video. Now having heard it from your video, it makes the outcome *soooooo* much more satisfying.
Just a little note: the massive erruption buff has happened along with the 40 perks change, and actually got little attention by community, with the exception of Dowsey. This perk was barely getting used up until the knight.. The knight is *the* killer Who made erruption meta, because of his 3 genning capability. Overall the video is really great, this is just a little thing i noticed cause, as far as i remember, it didnt happen over night and took almost half a year for this perk to start destroying
Swung by to compliment the work done on the thumbnail. I see a lot of subtle work others might've not noticed, such as the bubbling highlight over some of the rounded parts of the text, and the shadow layer of the Skull Merchant overlapped across some of the yellow background text. Also: The text color selection? A+, clearly some research went into it. Now I'll watch the video lol
My friends and I just afk against merchant, if there weren't a penalty for it we'd just dc now and make her play pve. It's sad that generator spreads and skull merchant's design have lasted this long. Hopefully bhvr can mobilize their teams toward making these strategies less effective.
Honestly I feel ya but unfortunately they're adding a anti afk thing soon where if you afk it counts as a DC penalty which sucks because I love playing basement guarding chest bubba for fun and because of that anti afk thing I'm really mad

Although, I get it with skull merchant if I see the 3 gen situation I give up immediately because I'd rather spend the next hour playing against any other killer than trying to finish 1 gen for a whole hour
I don't know if they ever have changed it or not, but when I encountered her I found it pretty confusing that: a) she's undetectable within the range of her drones b) her movement is strangely silent? Is she a stealth killer? With Michael you can hear his breathing, with Ghostface you can hear the flapping of his coat, hell, even with the invisible killer like Wraith you can hear whatever the ungodly gurgling sound he makes. But with her I cannot hear anything at all and with small maps she could traverse them undetectable half the time. The whole design seems so incoherent and confusing.
I am a Skull Merchant main so I would like to add something in this discussing. I enjoy playing with her and I will try to change up her add-ons/perks just to see if I am good player or not. I will admit that I will use the three gen method in securing a victory, but I do enjoy the chase (note: I will three gen a "Bully Squad" without hesitation). I want to make the skull merchant even harder to play but still maintain the "fun factor", so I made some changes to her design, which includes her add-ons, but I am not finish yet. Still, I love your devotion to this game and I will be subscribing. Take care
@@Zertened Hello. I would give her drones two different abilities. First, there's the basic way of using her drones by scanning the survivors but if a survivor gets near the drones (similar to the knight's guards), the drones would attach it self to the first survivor, causing the claw trap to activate. Any add-ons that was place on the drones will affect that survivor (similar to the pig's bear trap). Once the battery is completely depleted on the claw trap, the survivor would have to take it off manually, but removing the claw trap may take one or several attempts (again, similar to the trapper's traps). (Note: Expired Batteries will remove the claw traps once the battery is depleted). If a survivor fail in their attempt to remove the trap or leave the depleted trap on, the trap will explode, causing a heathy survivor to lose a health state and cause a injure survivor to have deep wound or the trap come back on with only 25% battery life. Due to this adjustment, the Skull Merchant will need two extra drones or she would have to go to a work bench, which is scatter around the map, to make new drones. There's more but what do you think? This will eliminate "The three gen" but she is not weak.
Killers used eruption and wouldn't take chase because the game gave no reason to do so. Why chase the swf squad to the dead zone when they are running dead hard plus circle of healing. Not much of a skill issue. Its seeing an issue and addressing it. Luckily Circle of Healing and Dead Hard got nerfed with the kick meta. Although I feel medkits did not need to be nerfed. Also onto the take that u can't play SM any other way. That is bull. She is limited, but u can indeed mix up her gameplay. I for one run a stealth SM. I use her oblivious add ons mixed with plaything, ruin, franklins, and pentimento. My build early on encourages Survs to get off gens and search for totems. SM has a great lung and her drones are amazing at denying loops, tiles, or pallets. Its not super hard to play her as a chase killer. Many killer mains just choose not to because they are uninspired ppl and see making survs miserable as some grand pass time. I win majority of my games with my playstyle. I've beaten swfs and bully sqauds as well.
I've agreed with this from the moment I first saw her gameplay reveal. Seriously when I think of a drone killer I could imagine so many funner and more dynamic ways to implement the concept: Having the drones be mobile so that they can catch survivors unaware or patrol larger set areas, making their detection radius directional so avoiding them is more mental than just needing to step in the big circle to get at a gen, giving them mounted turrets that can weaken survivors in some way while the Skull Merchant is away. Anything that makes her feel less like a killer that spends all the time camping.
I’m gonna be transparent before I say anything: I’m a very simple person to please, if there’s even one thing I like about a killer/survivor etc. I will end up finding them fun to play. This is the same thing with SM, weirdly of all things, it’s her basic attack animation that makes me like her. It’s kinda feels like she’s smacking the survivor in the side of the head, and I like to imagine that they do a little cartoon spin when I hit them. I also really like technology, and the drones always feel nice to deploy, I love the animation of them slowly scanning the surrounding area. Using the little phone to track people who either have a trap on them or are in the radius of a drone is satisfying cause it feels like one of those classic moments where the villain smiles to themselves cause they’ve finally got the leg up on the hero. These are my very simple reasons for liking SM, and I understand that these are all very subjective and meaningless things to many people, but I’m easy to please and I enjoy almost all of the killers in this game, including Knight, SM, Freddy, Clown, Legion, Spirit, and even the more “disliked” killers like Nurse and Trickster. Thank you for reading and have a good day :)
i have been enjoying playing as skull merchant alot recently but as i play survivor alot more than killer i can understand alot of both sides and i want to make skull merchant alot different from a 3 genning bitch the whole time but as said its just hard to play her any differently which is why something from behaviour would have to do something about it and rework the claw trap mainly instead of her absolute pressure over gens and make her a more track and kill type killer rather than just monitoring gens all the time but the only way to get claw trap on someone is by setting up a bs enough drone that they actually do something abt it and its not something the merchant player can do so sometimes merchant is forced to put on these bs drones and cant do anything else bc if merchant does do something else its just ignored and then merchant loses pressure so for to actually be fun for either side isnt really the merchants player fault as well she doesnt really have a choice and with the "just play someone else" thing well yea they could do that but coming from someone who plays her she is just my favourite killer... aesthetically (yes thats why i play her) and i dont really enjoy any others as much bc the only ones with good pressure i dislike and the ones i do like i suffer when playing and no matter how much i play them its just lose lose lose bc their so easily countered and merchant provides a more tactical feeling which i like but despite how she is supposed to be played any chance i can play her differently i jump at the opportunity like using her drone to clear out places thoroughly and check popular spots whilst i can monitor other things but its just sad most times bc of the maps they just dont work and if i do try to do those things i immediately lose like 2 gens bc i cant do anything so yes she is poorly designed and now im more eager than ever for her to receive a change
As a Skull Merchant Main I know a way to change her power to make it to where she has good chase potential. Take away the expose effect from drones, because she doesn't need it, and replace it with hindered. But the hindered only works on one survivor. Now this requires reworking how the drones work. If a survivor is in the radius of a drone for too long, eventually the drone with shoot out a tracker that will destroy the drone and give information to the Skull Merchant where the survivor is. The hindered effect stays on the survivor for the as long as the tracker is on them and 10 seconds after. It will make the haste effect that Skull Merchant gets from trackers more valuable and make it to where survivors would want to deactivate drones more proactively. I don't know but there is a way for her power to be reworked to have great chase potential. I run a chase only build on Skull Merchant, Enduring, Bamboozle, STBFL, Brutal and do pretty well in my games with a 3k average.
I haven’t played DBD in a LOOONG ass time but this video was awesome. Also, I had a little idea to rework Skull Merchant. How about, instead of having 4 Drones, you get 3 drones, can only set up 2 at a time, and they return to her after a set amount of time (say 25-30 seconds) buff her chase potential so she can actually chase, and make the radius of the drones a little bigger, so that they are complementary to her chase and not used to camp the generators (again I have not played this game in a long ass time and I might just be talking out of my ass lmao). Anyways, good vid!
I absolutely adore the idea of "girlboss" characters (I main YunJin), and really wanted to give SM the benefit of the doubt when they chapter went on PTB. After several attempts at playing her in some sort of exciting and skillful manner, even running things like PWYF and STBFL to amp her chase game, I was bullied relentlessly because she was so weak. That's when I decided that for the first time since release, I would not pay for a new chapter with either Auric Cells or direct purchase. It took months to get the killer and two survivors, but their perks are all dogwater anyways and were I not a completionist I'd still not have acquired them at all.
Honestly with alien in the game it feels like she's a knockoff predator, so it's good BHVR got this catastrophe out of the way before they get the predator license (if they do)
Here I am, let's go for points: First of all, really good video, your points are really valid and I agree with the 99% things you said. Skull Merchant base-kit is a problem and it only promotes trapping gens and a really passive playstyle. I played with other add-ons, I scrimmed a comp team while using only yellow add-ons and still perks like Pop and Pain Resonance instead of the classic "cm9i build" and got good results without sitting on the threegen and by committing chases (my add-ons were longer clawtrap time and faster triggering Undetectable, so no skillchecks add-ons): I got many 4Ks and worst score was a 2K with 10 stages (I made mistakes mid-game and was tired because it was the last game of the series, at 2:00 AM my local time). So, she "kinda" has chasing potential... but it's really passive without the purple add-ons and relies more on clawtraps. The interesting part of these scrims was that a longer clawtrap also means that I've a drone less for a longer time, but I still got value from the add-on to help me at my macromanagement and for a longer haste boost while chasing them or someone else. This is not a way to defend her design at all, just to show that the "hard way" is still rewarding even against good and organised teams. I also said that I would killswitch her now if changes are not planned for anytime soon, but I wish they start from really simple things like removing unhackable status and making clawtraps lasting longer, so that taking drones is more rewarding. It's not a definitive fix, but it would have huge impacts on chess merchants and force chases at happening. Also reworking skillcheck add-ons. Second point: I wish you could reach me for the clips, not because I'm upset at these being used, but for two reasons. The first one is that I would be fine at having my name showed, if people want to hate they can: I learnt how to deal with hate and I'm protecting myself (right now on Twitter I've people defending cheaters I faced because I was playing Skull Merchant). It's a topic I'm more than happy to afford because I think I'm addressing it in a way that can be constructive for both sides and I want to promote a more interactive playstyle. The second reason is because I would share my opinion in a more clear way to avoid spreading a wrong idea about my point: I don't think Skull Merchant has a huge chase potential base-kit (even if that scrim saw me being rewarded for my resources management more than a 3-gen camping), I made a hour long video about why the base-kit is a problem and purple add-ons shouldn't be the fix to it. As I said, I'm 99% on your side and the points you shared in this really well made video, but I only wished I could be contacted considering my contents were used, mainly to give a better context to my clips than for "credits" because my opinion is a bit more complex than "They want to make you think she has chase potential". Wishing you the best and giving you a follow both here and on Twitter
There's certainly "some" chase potential with Skull Merchant. I don't think it's impossible, but the problem is that most players won't go through hoops to reach it. I respect the shit out of you for basically working overtime to make BHVR's design work in a less boring way, but unfortunately most people won't do that. People are always going to look for the easiest way to protect gens, and Skull Merchant makes that way too easy. I think if BHVR is going to give her design a second look (which it sounds like they already are) putting a focus on chasing is the best way to go. My concern is that the way her drones work in chase now would make the chases way too boring and relying on things like haste would just make her feel bad to play against. It's all up to BHVR to make it work, and I think having drones always be in scanning state wouldn't be too bad. It could be a chase similar to one with Huntress, where you have to duck under the scanning area or run along with it to avoid some sort of negative effect. I do think she has potential in that regard. I think I remember you saying that you had a video about your ideas for changes to SM in the works, so I'm looking forward to seeing that and what kind of suggestions you have for her! Addressing the second point: So, for a while I was debating on it. I really considered crediting you, but was worried for a few reasons. My thought process had me thinking that crediting you - while objectively the right thing to do - was also a little scary. I was concerned that if I had credited you, some hate would be sent your way. Like you said, I'm sure you're probably used to it due to playing Skull Merchant and how popular it is to hate on her, but I also knew there was some sort of controversy going on for a large chunk of making this video. I don't really have a "take" on the drama, I straight up don't know you enough to make any judgements on your character. I also don't know enough about it because I really didn't pay attention because it seemed mostly like just word of mouth, however I was worried that if I had put your name front and center - people would have seen it and have gotten upset that I was promoting someone they "didn't like" or some stupid reason, or more people would have added to the trouble you were already facing at the time. Wasn't sure how much stress that would've added, and I felt like having controversy around the first DBD video I made would have looked bad. I also figured since I wasn't taking large chunks of your content, it wouldn't have been a huge deal. You're absolutely right though, and from now on I'll be crediting anyone I choose to take clips from - regardless of length. I also didn't intend to have the words I said while using your clips to be taken as YOUR opinions. I was addressing things I've seen a group of people say, and didn't mean to attribute those words to you directly. I'm sorry if I made it come across that way to anyone watching. I tried to get my own clips doing essentially the same thing shown in the videos I used of you to avoid this altogether, but you're just much better and more familiar with her than I am. Also, I discovered that bots just don't play against SM the way most players tend to, and I hate having to play her against actual people. BHVR was very adamant about not giving me the add-ons I needed too, which didn't help lol Glad to see you liked the video! Thanks for reaching out!
@@skrumped Hey, don't worry, I understand all your points and you protecting your own contents, considering the "drama" I'm coming from. The thing is whatever came from that drama is my responsibility, a responsibility I'm taking accountability for. I truly understand your point of view tho and your good intentions behind the choice, so it's all fine! It was more because I like speaking of Skull Merchant and I'm more than open to share my opinions about her, possibly giving a helpful feedback to improve her. About your other points, I absolutely agree with you and I hope that some early changes can come REALLY soon. The more that showcase is seen, the more problematic Skull Merchant becomes: I've already faced many of them as survivor, even running indoor maps, and it wasn't definitely a fun time! Many compliments again for the video, I'm curious to see your next works
@@JaneIsLive As many problems as I have with Skull Merchant, I am glad some people are willing to look through her design and play her enough so it isn't a "she's bad, everyone forget about her" situation. You and some other people are working to make her more enjoyable, which is very commendable. Sending love your way!
I do play as the Skull Merchant and chase survivors only rarely touching gens, and putting drones at random place on the map, she is my main, and i completely understand the frustration of players going against her, until then i didn't knew she was perceived as "that" annoying (even though i knew her chapter wasn't much appreciated) being mostly ignorant of what happened within the dbd community.
I won't lie, I had no idea Skrump had a youtube channel, but now that I do, I had to insta-subscribe. His editing from Scott's videos, as well as the personality he's shown through them is really fun to me.
How I would fix the skull merchant is by just focusing on the info and stealth part of her power remove the exposed, increase the range of the drone, remove the survivors being able to see the aura of drones, get rid of any tell that there in the range and that's it. This change will focus on what I think is the coolest part of skull merchant her radar and her stealth and it will be more lore accurate.
As the president of the Skull Merchant Haters Club, gotta say I LOVE your video. Tools of Torment is the worst chapter released so far and BY A LOT. Best joke of the century goes to: “Playing Skull Merchant is like playing chess”. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
It wasn’t just eruption that was the problem it was ran with over charge and call of brine and pain rez. It gave birth to the 6 month gen meta and it was right after they nerfed a bunch of survivor perks and have basekit buffs to every killer. It was the most boring time in dbd EVER.
"Choosing not to 3gen with merchant is making the game harder for you." So....? It's better to have a more challenging match but have more FUN doing so. "Saying to use her purple addons gives her chase potential is not a good arguement" ??????? A lot of killers are addon reliant and have addons that make them better in chase. What is your arguement here? People shouldn't use addons that make the merchant more fun? Killers that aren't good in chases are allowed to exist. Killers that are simple are allowed to exist. Killers that aren't mechanically demanding are also allowed to exist. God forbid someone wants to play killer but has some sort of motor function disability/isn't that good at mechanically demanding video games.
I just want us all to agree to disconnect when we play Skull Merchant. It doesn't happen that often, so a penalty won't be too bad. Firstly, it will save us all time, and secondly, maybe at least it will encourage developers to rework this disgrace normally.
Sometimes it’s a bad skull merchant and I’ll at least try at first, but if she has all the gen regression perks she’s holding a 3 gen from the start, and is obviously trying to hold the game hostage, then you just give up after 10 minutes, they’ll stop playing her eventually
I have bought every killer, mostly with shards and cells for licensed stuff, but I never bought the skull merchant, boring to play, zoning, etc etc. Just a simple rework just to give her different gadgets to trap areas for it to be more deadly for looping and she is able to activate the gadget any time as long close as well gadgets for her to be stealthy like go invisible for her or speed boost. ASWELL I remember a teaser for crates around the map which I thought either a singularity emp like thing or something she has to get, which that could be a good idea for her to get the gadgets and more variety in power
Who designed skull Merchant? It's so bad. Who was like "FINALLY, I can play killer as the Starbucks barista who goes to the library in their spare time!"? Terrible. Terrible design.
What baffles me the most tbh is that people actually, unironically play her. She's so incredibly boring, her power feels so, so low impact, visually she's extremely bland. There's literally nothing good I can say about Dull Merchant yet there's people that will actually play her over the other killers in the roster, insane.
Just because you hate a killer doesn’t mean other people don’t enjoy playing her. I enjoy her playing her. Her add ons make her chase really strong and she’s versatile with the amount of builds you can use with her. It’s incredibly fun to make a build completely around her chase potential because her kit has some strong aspects of it. The built in dissolution, how people taking drones makes her faster, she constantly knows where you are, can go undetectable if she stays in a drone which can make some nice mind games.everything in her kit gives her basically everything she needs to be good in chase. You guys are so hell bent on her 3 gen playstyle that you just ignore that whole aspect of her. You see that everyone hates her so you decide to hate her as well. It’s fucking annoying to see the same thing over and over again.
@@blckorb6322 "You guys are so hell bent on her 3 gen playstyle that you just ignore that whole aspect of her." Could be because 'sometimes goes faster' and 'sometimes is undetectable' aren't terribly interesting in any way. "You see that everyone hates her so you decide to hate her as well" No, I hate her because I had multiple matches against her where she just held a 3 gen hostage; and even the matches where she didn't do that still sucked shit because her chase just has her shitting drones out at loops, forcing you to leave the loop; or she'll randomly start sliding at you faster, making it impossible to properly gauge the distance you have on her. Every aspect of facing her is miserable, and she's boring as shit to play.
Just a thirst trap, I'm cool with a little horny in my horror but the killer design feels more like it'd be in fortnite or some porn game. Embarrassing design.
I hear that terror radius music of the chess merchant and everything I’m my being wants to just dc…I don’t feel like that about any other killer …okay maybe hag…
I played two games of Skull Merchant to get her achievements and I made sure not to do a 3 gen strat because I know how miserable it is to play against. Even though I knew what I was doing, I felt like I was doing something wrong by not putting her drones on gens. If you don’t put her drones on gens she feels like she doesn’t have a power at all. I got my Adept achievement but I had to play somewhat sweaty because she just felt so underwhelming.
Skull merchant is not design to be leaving her drones static. She is necessary to use them as a place where she needs to trap and cook survivors until expose them. She is fun, but it is so important to use good add-ons, because without them she is so hard.
This is exactly what needs to be said about the Skull Merchant. Initially, I wasn't as negative about her; most of the people I had heard talk shit about her was because of her visual design. But... a fifty-five minute match? Holding a three-gen? That's the stupidest thing I've ever had to witness whilst being a member of this game's community. Thank you so much for bringing this to a conceivable light. I hope you gain many more followers for your comprehensive commentary.
I know absolutely nothing about this game but your passion is infectious. I’m a skull merchant hater now.

they really said "what if we made a killer thats unfun to play against, unfun to play, has poorly written lore, promotes the worst parts of the game, has bad cosmetics, and is overall terrible"
then when that went poorly they went "WHAT?????

And knights generally camp n tunnel they both suck

Love your channel but every SM player deserves to be mocked and play against bots
As your own replies show, some people *do* mindlessly hate her. They're still twats for it, but it kinda pokes holes in your argument
A year later and she's pretty much killed until her rework, let's hope it's a fun rework ❤
There is honestly nothing good about skull merchant. Her power works terribly, her lore makes no sense, and she has an awful design. She just needs a rework from the ground up. Just make her a whole new killer.
Yep. Turn her into "Predator"
The only good thing about the Dull Merchant is that she has united the vast majority of the player base in their hate for her.
I don't mind her visually but her power is basically beyonc saving
Lore has some cool elements but focuses on the wrong things.

Watching that Skullmerchant match, even through Otz’s pov, made my head hurt and I’m glad I’ve played against skullmerchant once.
I've been saying the same for some time now that her power is terrible and needs to be reworked into a chase power.

He's still at least interesting. Skull merchant is just sit and wait for things to happen
7:55 I know it doesn't apply now but in the words of every 2021 survivor with a certain other perk "just wait it out bro"
Why nemesis

Dude im SHOCKED that you dont have any other videos, this was so well made and informative, keep it up dude! You earned my sub
Well played
I only play her for rituals/challenges, and I can play her however I want...because survivors DC and I end up playing a bot match.
Deja vu is definitely good for learning three gens quicker and helping prevent them, but once you've learned them you shouldn't be unable to recognize their general areas without it.

i’d rather go against 10 nurses in a row. at least those matches are super quick and you can move on to the next game asap.

Way too many things line up
Although knight is also a 3 gen killer, I find it so satisfying to *”CAPTURE THE FLAG”*
the only thing I can think of for SM and her drones is to take out the exposing status effect on survivors. As for SM, a fun idea could be to make the drones stealthed when not active, reduce the active time to 5-6 seconds, and a 20sec cooldown per activation (while keeping the radar thing).
What foolishness.
I love skull merchant with all my heart, i absolutely love to play her, but the hate she gets is 100% justified
W
Me too :D I wonder how they fix the 3gen tho huuuh cuz she’s defiantly getting tweaked at one point
Imagine they rework and she ends up being the funnest killer cuz there’s so much potential cool stuff of wat they can do with drones
It's how I feel with Knight. We want our killers to be gold, but right now it's covered in garbage.
shes my main i love her so much !
Idk who you are, but you've earned my subscription just from putting up text for more than 5 seconds so I can read it without pausing
I see the twins more than I see skull merchant. The twins was the least played character I have played against until the skull merchant release. I haven't even bothered trying to figure out when her perks are being used.
Remember when there was a Skull Merchant Archive Challenge to literally just put drones at gens. Good times.
I wish they'd make a brown meme addon that removed the expose effect so I could run it on her and be able to do dailies without people dcing
I think CM9i is a complete troll because my *only* interaction with him was him forcing a skull merchant game purposely to make the server close
Well the guy obviously has some skills if he could go 55 minutes with the best pro team in the world.
Alright but here's a counter-point:
What if a player wants to torture people legally?
Hot take. Skull merchant is great in chase. It’s just her power can be used to. Protect 3 gen so well. She’s actually fun to play and chase

I don't know if they ever have changed it or not, but when I encountered her I found it pretty confusing that:
a) she's undetectable within the range of her drones
b) her movement is strangely silent?
Is she a stealth killer? With Michael you can hear his breathing, with Ghostface you can hear the flapping of his coat, hell, even with the invisible killer like Wraith you can hear whatever the ungodly gurgling sound he makes. But with her I cannot hear anything at all and with small maps she could traverse them undetectable half the time. The whole design seems so incoherent and confusing.
i get the disclaimer, but I'm not 100% sure skull merchant 3 genners are actually real humans, i need a DNA test before i'm convinced
ur editing style and the way u make videos is so good thats a sub
I found it so weird that SM gets to see the meters filling for survivors. It feels like free info that make the clawtraps feel pointless.
literally all clawtraps due is make dissolution pointless to run
I am a Skull Merchant main so I would like to add something in this discussing. I enjoy playing with her and I will try to change up her add-ons/perks just to see if I am good player or not. I will admit that I will use the three gen method in securing a victory, but I do enjoy the chase (note: I will three gen a "Bully Squad" without hesitation). I want to make the skull merchant even harder to play but still maintain the "fun factor", so I made some changes to her design, which includes her add-ons, but I am not finish yet. Still, I love your devotion to this game and I will be subscribing. Take care
shes my main since her ptb release i would love to know what would u change.
Great video, I always love to see some kris 3 genner hate
Honestly with alien in the game it feels like she's a knockoff predator, so it's good BHVR got this catastrophe out of the way before they get the predator license (if they do)
Here I am, let's go for points:
First of all, really good video, your points are really valid and I agree with the 99% things you said.
BHVR was very adamant about not giving me the add-ons I needed too, which didn't help lol
Glad to see you liked the video!
"Choosing not to 3gen with merchant is making the game harder for you."
So....? It's better to have a more challenging match but have more FUN doing so.
"Saying to use her purple addons gives her chase potential is not a good arguement"
???????
A lot of killers are addon reliant and have addons that make them better in chase. What is your arguement here? People shouldn't use addons that make the merchant more fun?
Killers that aren't good in chases are allowed to exist. Killers that are simple are allowed to exist. Killers that aren't mechanically demanding are also allowed to exist. God forbid someone wants to play killer but has some sort of motor function disability/isn't that good at mechanically demanding video games.
Such a well made video, especially the editing.

As much as I want Skull Merchant to be a valid and fun killer, I have to agree..
RIP Skull Merchant 🌹
there is no "RIP" Skull merchant as they were kinda dead on arrival lmao, jokes aside though, i agree

Could be because 'sometimes goes faster' and 'sometimes is undetectable' aren't terribly interesting in any way.
"You see that everyone hates her so you decide to hate her as well"
No, I hate her because I had multiple matches against her where she just held a 3 gen hostage; and even the matches where she didn't do that still sucked shit because her chase just has her shitting drones out at loops, forcing you to leave the loop; or she'll randomly start sliding at you faster, making it impossible to properly gauge the distance you have on her. Every aspect of facing her is miserable, and she's boring as shit to play.
Never used her, but damn. I like how in depth that was. Love to get more DBD
yeah but she’s hot so it’s fine 👍
The mask kind of ruins it, if they ever give her a maskless skin then yes.
Just a thirst trap, I'm cool with a little horny in my horror but the killer design feels more like it'd be in fortnite or some porn game. Embarrassing design.
i honestly think Skull Merchant was made to play like the Predator, then they got the license, so had to change her up, resulting in her jankiness.
I hear that terror radius music of the chess merchant and everything I’m my being wants to just dc…I don’t feel like that about any other killer …okay maybe hag…
I saw a fan made springtrap spotlight they should add in the game
I have started actively using this strat so people will get annoyed and moan, so that it will be nerfed… its for the greater good
This is what happens when you lose your Predator IP license rights at the last minute
