the real Robots in Disguise never gets enough credit for nailing the spirit of the original series. It mixed serious world-threatening plots, with good action and just the right amount of comedy/WTF to make it. Sky-Byte is a perfect example of that in character form.
Personally I found the main issue was that those elements weren't really presented cohesively. Sometimes it would jump back and forth too quickly. But the main issue I had was that half the toyline was recolors of G1 and Beast Wars toys while most of the rest were shellformers. The show was merely okay. But then, I feel the same for G1; it doesn't impress me nearly as much as some older fans insist it should, but has lots of very good individual episodes.
I'm surprised RID15 didn't try to bring him back in some form, as it sounds like he would've fit right in with the (mostly) sillier, stylized, animal-themed Decepticons. He was locked up on the *Alchemor* for Volgon poetry-style crimes.

You left out something really important about the RID version. His first appearance in the show he was a much more intelligent and cunning strategist. His first scheme nearly succeeded too. At the end of that episode though he was launched into space where he became frozen. He was brought back down to Earth and revived by the Predacons but they noted that Sky-Byte had gone insane due to permanent damage from his time in the vacuum of space. This is why all his future schemes were so bad and never came close to succeeding, or would backfire on him completely. Megatron/Galvatron as shown in a later episode still had a deep respect for the genius strategist that Sky-Byte once was, that's why he was kept around despite all his failures. That and because Scourge despite being far more competent was also a back stabbing traitor who wanted to lead over the Predacons and Deceptions. Sky-Byte was actually loyal to Megatron/Galvatron. His rivalry with Scourge was kinda one sided and only served to keep Scourge from accomplishing his true goals.
