Mistrial: Abu Ghraib Survivors Detail Torture in Case Against U.S. Military Contractor

A historic case against U.S. military contractor CACI brought by three Iraqi survivors of torture at the notorious Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq ended in mistrial in Virginia last week after the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict. The lawsuit against CACI - which was hired to provide interrogation services at Abu Ghraib - was first filed by the Center for Constitutional Rights in 2008. Since then, CACI repeatedly attempted to have the case dismissed. Plaintiffs Suhail Al Shimari, Asa’ad Zuba’e and Salah Al-Ejaili had accused CACI of conspiring to commit war crimes at Abu Ghraib. The three were subjected to sexual abuse and other forms of torture by interrogators. Democracy Now! speaks with Baher Azmy, attorney in the case and legal director of the Center for Constitutional Rights, who said it was “a historic human rights case” despite the outcome. “What they could not stop is three courageous human beings who stood up against every obstacle and told their story in a U.S. court in a breathtaking, compelling manner. And while we didn’t get a judgment from a jury, we got historical testimony that makes clear, I think, CACI’s responsibility for these clients’ harms,” says Azmy, who adds that they intend to retry the case.

I hold much shame for being part of the US Army for 26 years.
I hold a positive impresstion on US Army, i believe if you were not a terrorist or helping terrorists you shouldn't fear harm by them, did you witness anything yourself? That can be considered inhumane or violating human rights?
@drvillain96 I know a soldier who took video of himself pretending to make corpses talk. His army buddies nicknamed him "the puppeteer." Doesn't seem very humane to me.

Still you decided to stay for 26 years, I would have respect for you if you desserted and went to court martial, you decided to stay even knowing all this messed up shit, I dont sympathize with the "hate the war, love the soldier" kind of mentality, each soldier has a choice, either continue to follow orders even against human decency or have the courage and the bravery to refuse and leave the army.

Abu Graib was monstrous and showed the depths of depravity that the US sunk to and continued to do. The fact that this was held up so long and then resulted in a mistrial speaks volumes about how justice in America is no longer there.

A mistrial is hardly the worst outcome. It just means there will be another trial. The more visibility and publicity this gets, the better.

This is why jury INSTRUCTIONS are so critical and should be what all defense counsels should pick apart. That these military rejects and losers who peaked in high school are contracted by the US military is a disgrace.

Yet again, the people working for the military really should be subject to UCMJ as well as civilian court, in cases of human rights abuses.
The companies should either have to fire all involved up through the tippy top of command or at least those people who hosed up so badly should be barred from future contracts if we must keep a civilian military force employed overseas on behalf of the U.S. Govt.

That the powers that be don’t want to pass up

Is about the man who stands on the pulpit
Preaching peace and love and poetry
Save the world
And is killed by the onslaught of those who think they should be heroes
Of those who think they would be heroes
Of those would be heroes
Who have been brainwashed to think that
Killing a pacifist would be a good idea
Many think that Pontius Pilate was wrong
And perhaps Barbarus would’ve been a better choice
And another hero
Not a would be
Not a should be
As told by someone else to be
But perhaps is also there
Because they think God is on their side
The side of peace

When politics becomes the shadow cast by big business over the bewildered herd
Profit, less peace, replaced by raining war on our heads to increase next quarter’s profits, dividends and stock price
