  • democracynow.org - Graphic new details of the post-9/11 U.S. torture program came to light Tuesday when the Senate Intelligence Committee released a 500-page summary of its investigation into the CIA with key parts redacted. The report concludes that the intelligence agency failed to disrupt a single plot despite torturing al-Qaeda and other captives in secret prisons worldwide between 2002 and 2006, and details a list of torture methods used on prisoners, including waterboarding, sexual threats with broomsticks, and medically unnecessary "rectal feeding." The report also confirms the CIA ran black sites in Afghanistan, Lithuania, Romania, Poland, Thailand, and a secret site on the Guantánamo Naval Base known as Strawberry Fields. So far no one involved in the CIA interrogation program has been charged with a crime except the whistleblower John Kiriakou. In 2007, he became the first person with direct knowledge of the program to publicly reveal its existence. He is now serving a 30-month sentence. We speak with Reed Brody, counsel and spokesperson for Human Rights Watch, who has written several reports on prisoner mistreatment in the war on terror, including a 2011 report which called for a criminal investigation of senior Bush administration officials.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to
do nothing!" (attributed to Edmund Burke). By allowing these criminals to go free without bringing them to justice, we are condoning their actions. We must fight for justice, else we ourselves will become victim to their heinous crimes.

the point of torture is to obtain false confessions. so when people say that torture works, understand that it indeed does, because obtaining actionable intelligence is not the point.

This treatment of prisoners has it's beginnings in not-too-distant history. This began in 1945 with the German prisoners held for the Nuremburg trials. The torture wasn't as sophisticated as these . "Testicle crushing" was the torture of choice to reduce the Germans to the point that they would sign "Confessions" that confessed to ANYTHING to stop the torture. These "Signed confessions" were then used as evidence that would get them hung at Nuremburg. Threats against their families, sleep deprivation, beatings of their heads with brass knuckles, starvation, sleeping nude in cold cells, promises they will never see their families again . . . apparently 137 out of 139 german prisoners were dealt with in this fashion. Hoess, the commandant of Auschwitz for a period of time "Confessed" to murdering over 3 million jews in his time at the camp. It was later determined (after he was hung) that this was a total fabrication because, by jewish calculations, the WHOLE war fatalities at Auschwitz was just over 1 million. Why on earth would Hoess confess to such a distortion ?? . . . Torture . . .

"Not to forget that Bush Sr was head of the CIA when Kennedy was assassinated."
You've stated this more than once in the comments for this video, but I'm afraid it's simply not true.
      Don't get me wrong.
I'm the last person to defend Bush Sr., but there's more than enough fingers to point at him for things like Panama, without concocting spurious claims which can be discredited with no more than thirty seconds research.
There are some theories that link Bush Sr. with Kennedy's death, via oil companies he was involved in at the time, but he didn't become Director of the CIA until '76; John McCone was director in '63.

When I watched Superman the movie with Christopher Reeve in 1976, Lois Lane asked Superman, `Why are you here Superman?' Superman replied, ` For Truth, Justice and the American Way.' Nearly Everybody burst out laughing when Superman said this.I didn`t laugh. I`m still not laughing. Bob Dylan summed up in his song about Hurricane Carter. A Land where Justice is a game. Why are these criminals still free?

Aside from moral arguments, not least being that a large proportion of people were/are innocent in Guantanamo (and known to be by the Bush and Obama administration) - TORTURE DOES NOT WORK and is actually massively anti-productive.
The US Army Training Manual's section on interrogation states "…the use of force is a poor technique, as it yields unreliable results, may damage subsequent collection efforts, and can induce the source to say whatever he thinks the interrogator wants to hear." There are countless evidence and data that supports this.
Even if you are torturing people who a) are guilty of something b) have useful intelligence there is no evidence of which I am aware that torture ever yields useful output. All of the examples given by the Bush administration as evidence of its usefulness were discredited, and all independent evidence suggests it is a very very poor method at best. Whats more, if you have a large number of innocent people being tortured and prompted by those torturing, they will produce completely illusory 'evidence' that sends everyone else off on a wild goose chase. It will actually REDUCE your capacity to act on real intelligence, and not by a small amount.
Despite arguments in the press, I think there is a pretty good appreciation of this fact in the seats of power that pushed for use of "enhanced interrogation" and the reason is exactly the same as it has been for centuries - the true age old use of torture - which has always been extracting confessions from the innocent for political reasons.
If you have agents or agencies with a political agenda, perhaps to overthrow country X, but no evidence to support it - you need good intelligence to back up your arguments so you can make a credible case. Torture is an excellent way to obtain that "evidence". Take the output of the torture of Shaykh al-Libi. He made up the false claim that Iraq provided training in chemical and biological weapons to al-Qaeda. Secretary of State Colin Powell then used Libi’s statements in that famous February 5th, 2003, speech at the United Nations falsely alleging Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction.

This is a 500 page redaction which is truly horrific. Being that the original document is something like 60,000 pages and we are only seeing what the government wishes to show us then I think that the whole report has to be much more egregious then what they are willing to share with the public. Sickening… also please stop calling this "enhanced interrogation" because this is "torture".

If there is no prosecution in the U.S. a world court should put them on trial absent their presence. Conviction would make them liable for arrest as soon as they leave the land land of the free and home of the brave where torture is permitted.
Prison guards sexually abusing prisoners is a crime in all 50 states. Why should these Americans be allowed to sexually and otherwise abuse their prisoners? This report reveals totally disgusting behavior and Obama's unwillingness to prosecute is equally disgusting making him an accomplice after the fact.

Yes it would be naive in the extreme to think that the Bush administration is the only administration to use such methods, however it does not mean that the practice should be tolerated or go unpunished. You would have to retroactively send every president and cohorts to the Hague from the time of WWII onward...

I love history but I really research a subject because I really want to know the truth, if I can truly find it so I read a lot. Humans have been horrible like this for thousands of years and it was worse in Bronze Age time. I mean the Kings of Assyria loved to skin people. What I'm trying to say is we are violent, not very empathetic and these days angrier than ever.
