I purchased this pattern on Etsy. Just wanted to take a look at your tutorial. I'm so glad I did. Your tutorial is amazing. I have been sewing for about sixty years and I still learned a few things from this tutorial. Thanks so much. I truly enjoyed this.
Hi Jan Can I just say you are a GREAT teacher, I already had a bucket hat pattern and just could not get them to look right, I then purchased another pattern just in case and guess what they still had puckers etc, then I came across your tutorial and I used the pattern I had and the hats turned out amazing because of your guidance. I might not get asked to make hats again, how ever I feel that your tutorial was definitely worth the cost of a pattern and more. So there for I am going to buy your pattern right now as a thank you. I look forward to watching more of your tutorials.
Although I was frustrated about buying the pattern, I have subscribed and watched more videos. I've found that your instructions are excellent and easy to follow. I've been sewing off and on for many years (I'm 75 yo), but have still learned many great techniques from watching. Thank you!
Beginner here 👋! I successfully made the receiving blanket following your tutorial (thank you), and now I can’t wait to try this. Thank you for being a great instructor!
I very much enjoyed your video tutorial on bucket hats. I watched several different videos on how to make it and followed 3 different methods. One turned it at the brim, one on the side and your where you separately connect the outside and inside to the brim 1st and then turn it. In your method, the brim is sewn to both the inside and outside of the hat at the same time. Your method is the best because after the hat is turned, the brim is secured through the outside and lining of the hat. In addition, the topstitching in your tutorial made it look better when finished, and I really like the cord and zip thingy, and even put some grommets on one of them. Thank you for a well thought out and easy to follow tutorial.
Excellent tutorial. I think I would use some interfacing on the top and just leave it out of the seam allowance. Or maybe a stretch interfacing! You have inspired me and that says a lot since I am 77 years old! Thank you. I have subscribed, of course 😊
Oh my goodness I'm glad I found you. I watched a couple of your videos and had to subscribe. I love your sewing. This hat is just what I need. I have a small head and the hats that fit me are small childrens sizes but then I have bunnies, unicorns and other things that I would rather not wear but with your pattern I can make my own with my own lovely fabrics, made to match my outfits. Thank you, thankyou.
Your tutorials are wonderful. I appreciate the EXACT details and technique to get a really nice finish. I've made this type of hat with a different pattern. I bought your pattern for all the size variations. Along with your tutorial, I too, will make a MUCH BETTER hat! THANKS AGAIN for your detailed expertise!
And yet, another great tutorial. I enjoy your tutorials so much, you explain things so that everything is understandable. I will definitely be making this hat. Thanks for a great tutorial
Thanks for the through, simple to understand tutorial. I must have watched 20 of these and messed up my first attempt. I use thrifted fabric, thank goodness. Once I perfect a project, I may buy nice material and make gifts for friends and family. Newly retired and thought I knew how to sew! 😂 I thought threading the needles would be the most difficult part. Phew!
this is by far the BEST tutorial for a bucket hat that I have come across. I tried doing another video and it went awfully! I will be using this tutorial from now on! Thank you!
Jan, thanks for the pattern and the tutorial. I’m making a practice now and the “real deal” once I’m sure it will fit. Hat finished and … too big! I’ll size down. Your directions were very helpful though.
What size did you try? Can I ask what your head measurement is and what size you made? Just a note: if you don't use any interfacing, you may want to size down. Your feedback is helpful. Thanks for commenting!
@@JanHowell I first did the adult size, based on the size 23. My head measurement is 22 so…. I did the next size down and it fit great. The larger size will fit my nephew, so that will work. A gift!
This was super helpful thank you very much much appreciated I bought 2 bucket hats I loved the print but was way to big and wanted to know how I could make it smaller and this video helped a lot thanks ❤😊🥰🙏
Hi Jan, love the way you teach sewing also love this tutorial ❤️ I’m looking for a bucket hat where you can have a hole in the back for a poney tail to come out of… wish I knew how to figure this out. Can you help me on this? Thanks
hi jan i have just made my very first bucket hat for my maldives holiday i pretty pleased with it although not perfect but good enough for me my only problem is its a bit too big as iv a small head is there any way to sort it without making ait all again plz x
Do you mean "shorten" ? If it's a cotton fabric and you just want the brim smaller, you could cut it down just outside one of the topstitching row and let it fray. Many like that look.
I just found you and I enjoyed your tutorial, what interfacing are u using?, and do u add trims to your hats, if sew do u glue them on?, thank you and happy sewing.
Very easy to follow lesson! Question: I want to add about 3 inches to the width of the brim to shield my face more from the sun. Yet, I don’t want the brim to look floppy. How do I calculate how much fabric to remove from the outer edge of the brim pattern? I already ruined one sun hat by not removing enough from the brim pattern (using the slit and overlap method in 7 places on the brim pattern piece x 2 for the entire brim). I still ended up with a slightly too floppy brim. I just guessed at how much to overlap the vertical slit/slashes.
If you add 3 inches to the brim, it will end up floppy. You could add a more stiff interfacing that would hold the shape better. Test the interfacing on with two layers of fabric and see if it holds its shape. I hope that was helpful.
