The funny thing is, Weird Al doesn't actually need to ask permission to parody anything, because parody is transformative and falls under Fair Use. But he does so anyway, out of respect! What a great guy!
I would totally agree, the reality is all music is built off of an earlier form. Just in my opinion anyway
Remember, there are two parts to writing a song; writing the lyrics and writing the music. If you parody the lyrics but keep the music the same, fair use probably doesn't cover it. You would have to add that "grace note" like Vanilla Ice did. Come to think of it, he still lost in court on that one. And even if copyright law should cover you, if someone with enough money decides to test it in court you still might lose. Getting (written) permission doesn't just maintain goodwill in the industry, it covers your ass legally.
@@FanboyFilms Weird Al often parodies the music as well, incorporating polka music into popular songs. There was a case where 2 Live Crew parodied Roy Orbison's "Oh Pretty Woman" against the wishes of the estate (they asked permission, were denied, then did it anyway), with similar musical/instrumental backing, but the lyrics were so substantially different that it created otherwise distinctive music. It was ruled fair use by the Supreme Court in Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music. Any person who tries to sue Weird Al has no leg to stand on. Vanilla Ice lost because the purpose of his work was not found to be a parody, he didn't credit the authors of the music he was sampling (Weird Al always credits the author), taking an essentially unaltered musical idea and using it for his own commercial purpose without paying sampling royalties
Technically you are correct. But that won't stop some rich & famous artist from suing you & who knows what a jury will do.
I just dont know how anyone could say no to that adorable face lol
Weird al is one of my favorites because he is a respectable person and one of a kind. His music always made me feel happy as a child. And it still does today! What a great example of how to use your gifts to make a positive impact on other people’s lives. 👍🏻👍🏻😁
Charles Quinn Respectable? What are you a Union Mime?
"Oh, Al's just having fun" is perhaps the best compliment you can give to someone as talented and funny as Weird Al.
Cause they're British, they don't take parodies so seriously like Americans would
Weird Al seems like one of the coolest people on earth. Hes doing a job that people would dream to do and hes still humble and sincere and keeps a pretty low profile outside of fame. I hope hes around forever!!
what a sad, sad life you must have. 😥
Put this man in the rock-n-roll hall of fame!
Thats like putting a cover band in the hall of fame, madness.
@@Matlockization Well, if they reach a legendary level, become part of the history of the music genre - yes, put them there.
+timomastosalo. A cover band performs other people's material and that's exactly what Al is. So your ok with everyone being in the hall of fame ? That's crazy.
@@Matlockization They perform other people's material - yes. That's why they are called a cover band. But I'm in no way saying everybody gets in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame. Don't put your ideas in my mouth.
I'm not recommending all musicians with their own material to get there either. Only merited people.
He suggested Weird Al getting into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame, I second that.
For his merits.
+timomastosalo. Al merits is that non of his material is original (cover band). So you wanna see Al joining the Beatles, led Zeppelin, Elvis etc......are you fucking kidding ? Have they suddenly run out of people ? And just because a show host says so ? God help us all.
IIRC, it was Lady Gaga's "people" who originally denied Weird Al permission to do Perform This Way. She didn't even know the request had been made. Once she found out, however, she was fully on board. She got it. :)
Nirvana stated that had reached super star status only after Wierd Al had contacted them about doing a parody of their music. It's cool that they got it also.
It was the exact opposite with Coolio. Coolio's "people" said yes, but after the song came out, Coolio's on TV saying he never gave his permission and to "stay away from me!" Though I'm glad he cooled off later and "hugged it out" with Al.
Weird Al is so talented and has never let his success change him. Respectful, funny and a class act. Oh, and maybe a bit weird. Thank you sir, for all the years of entertaining your weird fans and never letting us down. Long live Weird Al. Simply the best at what he does.
Amish Paradise will probably always be my favorite Yankovic song, im sooo glad it got made lol.
To have this man make a parody of your song is an honour, be sure of that!
Yeah that was the peak of Paul McCartneys career
Only one of Al's songs has been suggested to him by someone else. When Madonna first heard Weird Al's music, she said to a friend that he should take her song 'Like a Virgin' and make it 'Like a Surgeon.'
...so he did.
As much of a bitch as Madonna is, she at least appears to have a sense of humor. More than one can say for Paul McCartney. "I don't want to promote the consumption of animals." WTF ever. Nobody is going to eat more chickens because of a Weird Al song. Plus Weird Al may have make Chicken Pot pies sound non appetizing in his song. If Weird Al had sung "Button your fly", Paul McCartney probably would have had a problem with it.
@@BrettonFerguson that comment by Paul is pretty ironic since Al has been (mostly) vegan for quite a while 😂
@legionaireb was that friend Ted Mosby? 😂 I love the episode with Weird Al’s cameo in
How I met your mother.
One of my favorite people in existence. Thank you for being you, Al.
He is sooo relaxed and charismatic, I'm sure if he ever actually got a face to face with Prince, it'd be ok. How can you say no to this adorable face?
spookmineer Al is irresistibly adorable and sweet, but I don't think Prince was interested in a face to face chat. When Al was going to be sitting near him at an award ceremony, Al, and some other people who were going to be seated in the area were sent notices by Prince's attorneys that they weren't allowed to make eye contact with Prince.
@@Primalxbeast
That's doubtful & probably a stupid rumor. Neither Prince nor his attorneys have the authority to tell anybody anywhere where they can look. There'd be no legal recourse for them had anyone violated that order. He'd look like a real asshole if someone did & he retaliated via causing them problems within the music business. If I were in that situation, the very first thing I'd do is look straight at him.
Freewheelin' Franklin I'm sure that there's no way that Prince's lawyers could enforce the request, but Al has repeated that story in many interviews, and yes Prince made himself look like a jerk doing it.
Freewheelin' Franklin Here's the first interview I came across mentioning the incident. ua-cam.com/video/lArAQjtbRrw/v-deo.html It doesn't mention the lawyers in this one, but it's funny the way he tell the story.
Freewheelin' Franklin ua-cam.com/video/YuVitlHRiG4/v-deo.html
I wish Al had done a version of Katy Perry's "Roar", and done the male version called "Snore". It could be EPIC.
Had the opportunity to meet Weird Al, and perform on stage with him during a Star Wars song. (501st Legion). A great and very kind man!!!!!!!!!!!
"Let him be." I see what you did there.
Each “no” you get is just one “no” closer to that “yes”.

EMMA Lee No problem Emma! Be well and stay in touch :)
Yep
I dare you to imagine the chorus of 'Live and Let Die' as chicken clucks and not smile.
Why imagine it when you can hear it?

Interestingly enough...Paul McCartney LOVES Weird Al Music!
But if there was a Prince song for Weird Al...it should be "When Pigs Fly"...it would be a testimony on how Prince rejected Weird Al parodies...but Weird Al respects that.
This is why In My Humble Opinion Weird Al IS a Genius!
He'd never do it, but I wish Weird Al would do an entire album of Prince parodies. "When Pigs Fly" could be the first track, followed by "$19.99", "Raspberry Sorbet", and finishing with an epic "(I only want to see you driving in the) Car Pool Lane".
The Prince song that Al wanted to do for his film ‘UHF’ was ‘Purple Rain’ to be called ‘Purple Stain’. I worked on the film and recall that Al was disappointed that Prince would not give his permission. Al is a really great guy, I remember he struggled with being asked to do a beer commercial and was going to be paid a large fee. Al decided to turn down the job because he didn’t want youngsters who were his primary audience to think he was advocating alcohol consumption.
Yeah just like prince and others but they all said no way create your own stuff for once Al.
@@Matlockization You must not be familiar with is catalog.
+Mickey E. I listen to some of his stuff but as I've said before, its like the music hall of fame have run out of gifted musicians to praise, so weird Al is going to be eulogize with Led Zeppelin and the Beatles ? How is that not ridiculous ?
I like how respectful he was t Paul. We need more people like that in this world
Almost everyone is that respectful to Paul McCartney.
The Prince parody of 19.99 song would of been killer.
Weird Al Yankovic is a really great person, very intelligent kind and respects others and to great credit to his parents which from seeing footage of them they were sweet and you could tell they were genuine people. He is confortable with his celebrity but is down to to earth and has his own wacky view of the world. Of the rich and famous crowd he is one of the few I would actually like to meet in a casual way and share a interesting conversation.
I LOVE weird Al!!!! He has always been my favorite!!! He is AMAZING how he makes his music!!! Would LOVE to meet him in person!!!!
Agreed! Top notch fellow..
Weird Al is a genuinely nice person. My favorite song by him is still "Midnight Star", his original rib on tabloids and fake news, classic 😄
The 'stache returns... and it brought a friend!
This guy is brilliant, the Spike Jones of our time.
When he's older and decides he's done, he should put together a mega album of all the songs turned down by those artists and call it "The No Album." That'd be incredible.
Yes he should.
The Great thing about Weird Al's parody lyrics. They can be as great as the original lyrics and make them into new hit songs :)
Weird Al is so creative he could parody Tenacious D's songs
This is not the greatest song in the world, this is just a parody
I'd love to hear him make a tribute to Tribute
Coming up with a food product that rhymes with a word from a popular song isn't that creative.
If I ever wrote a song, and Weird Al wanted to do a parody, not only would I agree, I would want to appear as a guest artist on the track, and I would think "I've finally made it."
!!!!! Exactly!!!!
Yeah. You're nobody. Paul McCartney is a fucking Beatle. Do you see how that's different?
Man he has great hair I'm jealous.
Great guy, so sad about his parents.... I think of them from time to time.
what a well educated... COOL DUDE.. thanx WEIRD AL
His hair....😍
It’s a shame he got turned down, but perhaps it’s not too late to still do one with Paul
One of the best concerts I ever went to was Weird Al.
I’d love to hear the songs he produced and the artists he covered turned them away.
I want $19.99 😩
Followed Al for years.Still think his best was,"I Lost On Jeopardy",with Art Fleming,Don Pardo,& Greg Kihn at the end.Hilarious!
It's sad that most people don't know that more than half of Al's 14 studio albums are his original songs. Al also writes music for movies, TV and commercials. His live performances are a testament to his amazing talent.
Because his songs are funny he doesn't get played on commercial radio, so his great songs aren't made public and people just don't know how much more he is than just the "Eat it" guy.
MrMagoo I love his original songs. He has a lot more freedom with the lyrics when he doesn't have to try to fit them into the structure of a preexisting song.
being "funny" doesn't prevent you from getting Radio play. It actually helps. Weird all doesn't get Radio play for his originals because he can't write a hook.
@@mickeye6428 Al's "hooks" are amazing, so that's bullshit.
List all of the comedians who are getting airtime.
BTW, Weird Al is a musical genius and that's why other musical genius's, like Lin Manual Miranda. worship him.
You're just commenting without knowing anything about his music.
@@mrmagoo8510 He has no hooks. Why do you put it in quotations? Do you not know what it means?
Calling Weird Al a musical genius is a confession of profound musical ignorance.
"Another one rides the bus...and another one's gone, and another one's gone..."
Would have been hilarious.
ua-cam.com/video/HJquvI9NREU/v-deo.html
Weird Al is one of my favorite people in the world.
Seeing him here and also when he was interviewed by Craig Ferguson, he just seems so damn likeable.
Thank you, I'd like some more Al, please. ;)
I saw him back in the mid 80's and I'll tell you what; even though his music is all tongue-in-cheek parodies his band was *tight* and gave it their all every time. I've seen other major rock bands that gave such sloppy performances that makes you question whether they were there to connect and please their fans or just show up, punch the clock, take their money and go home.
No one is there to connect with or please the fans.
@@mickeye6428 Thanks for clearing that all up for me Mickey. I was totally confused, but now that you've commented, life strangely all makes sense now.
@@jchis9852 No. I'm sure there are plenty of other things you don't understand.
If he wasn't going to parodies of Paul McCartney's or Prince's songs, then he shouldn't have mentioned it to others, because once he does that, then people are going to want to hear it.
‘Weird Al’ is an American Treasure.
Serbian war criminal.
Matlockization Portuguese Lunar Landing
+porter_esq. People died in a safe zone in the former Yugoslav conflict.
I like what I just saw.
i love him!
Luuuuv the mustache! Thx for bringing it back Al.
I still have my original "In 3D" tape...
So much cooler than his brother Weird Steven.
When I first heard 'Eat It' on radio in about 1982, I remember the DJ saying the names Weird Al and Weird Bill, and it confused the hell out of me for a while. He was probably talking about himself or another DJ.
If you squint, Weird Al looks like James Lebrie.
I love Al ❤
Prince I could see would protect his songs privately but Paul not agreeing? He had humor going through the Beatles time and it proves again that the real Paul died in 1966 while a fake one took his place and hides the secret all these years.
Get outta here. You're nuts.
Didn't catch the vegetarian part?
2:00 Al talks about the 1999 parody idea
Paul, I'll quote a fictional English philosopher for your choice here:
- Ah, nice.
(Onslow)
Freddy Mercury was alive when he made a parody of Another one bites the dust. Freddy would have loved it...
That was the first song I heard from him. I heard it on a tiny radio station broadcasting from Big Stone Gap Virginia. The call letters were WSWG. I wonder if it's still on the air.
Traffic Jam is loosely based off of "Let's Go Crazy" by Prince, so Weird Al sort of managed to do a Prince parody, and the irony is not lost on me about "let's go" and then the idea of being stuck in traffic. :)
It's a song done in the style of Prince. Like Dog Eat Dog is like The Talking Heads.
What a freaking legend
Looking sharp with the goatee
Al is so cool!!! 😎
It must REALLY suck for Weird Al to have to answer the same interview questions for over half his life.
Well, he does dumb shit for a living.
@@Frip36 You know very little about Al. He's a genius who's been analyzing the musical styles of bands for over 40 years and recreating them into his own original compositions. You think that the handful of parodies you've heard are Weird Al, but that's only a fraction of his work. More than half of his 14 studio albums are these amazing original songs.
The other thing you're missing is the pure, unmatched talent of his live performances.
Rusty Shackleford Yeah, I wish the people doing the interviews would do a bit of research and try to come up with original questions. He's been asked the one about Paul McCartney countless times, and Al really likes Paul McCartney a lot and doesn't want people to think that Paul was a bad sport about being parodied.
@Captain Sunday Yeah, like "Bob" for example.
@@Frip36 Because comedy is notorious for being so easy to write and perform.
The fact Al's doing parodies all these years later, and still has a passion for it. Always interesting to know which artists turned him down, even Michael Jackson okayed "Fat"!
He hasn't had a passion for it since the 80's.
The little Purple guy from Minneapolis. At least Nirvana loved him.
It would be like getting an Oscar if weird am wanted to do your stuff.
I wonder if he can rename the song "tofu pot pie" and maybe McCartney will accept it.
Here's Al singing Chicken Pot Pie in concert
ua-cam.com/video/siZMgywImXY/v-deo.html
0:50 What makes you think McCartney *didn't* understand??? Understanding that it's funny, yet still disallowing it on ethical grounds is quite understandable.
Suprised Paul said no, but Prince saying no totally fits him.
Everything I know about parody law came from Weird Al and Nathan Fielder.
He should've tried Chocolate Cream Pie
Great video love the black and white
Like Marc Bolan ( with his corkscrew hair) ;)
A concert performance of Chicken Pot Pie has been here on UA-cam but I haven’t found it lately.
I found it!!
ua-cam.com/video/siZMgywImXY/v-deo.html
At least Paul's reason was not lack of humor but just moral objection.
Dream the impossible dream...
Prince took himself *wayyyy* too seriously!
We need "Little Red Chevette"
That's interesting, it isn't about Paul's ego and thinking his songs were too special. I like that.
Al is a great man
I'm surprised to see Sam Jones interviewing Weird Al considering his blatant antipathy and disgust towards his genre.
I would have liked the song Chicken Pot Pie.
Al never recorded it out of respect, but he used to sing it in concert and someone captured it on video.
ua-cam.com/video/siZMgywImXY/v-deo.html
Three of my favorite things
People always say things about not wanting to put people on lists like Al didn’t want to put Paul on, but you didn’t put him on it, he did haha. Paul put himself on the list of people who said no, because he said no haha. If they’re on a list because of what they said, then they put themselves on it, not you haha
One of the worst things you can say to an artist is, "Oh, we can't pay you any money, but you could get *so much exposure!*
"Exposure" doesn't pay bills. Even weddings and Sweet 16 parties and church gigs give payment.
Al pays every artist he parodies royalties. I just saw a video Greg Kihn made saying "God Bless Weird Al, I just cashed another check from him."
You've clearly never been an artist.
"I think I'm gonna buy it if it's $19.99"
Very cool I always loved weird Al, why because he's weird Lok
Another one bites the pillow.
I love Weird Al. He's been around and famous for a long time and I've never heard anything negative about him. I respect him for the respect he has for artists; he doesn't need permission to do what he does but, since he's not a d*&k he gets permission first.
The only thing I didn't like about this interview is that now I know that the world was deprived of Chicken Pot Pie! Dang.

Everyone who is a real Weird Al fan has known these stories for years.
What about Corn Doggy Dog Genius?
With Prince being gone, I bet the people controlling his music *now* would be amenable to a parody or two...
They could be possible, but Al usually parodies recent songs that have charted. Unless the Prince estate has released a new hit.
Sounds like a good way to be on Celebrity ghost stories...."I made this song without asking and now my house is haunted by a purple rain."
snidelywhiplash Al has already said he won't do that because he knows Prince didn't want him to.
That would be classy.
@@Primalxbeast I know. Was just being silly. I would love to hear Al's take on Prince, but I respect his respect of Prince's wishes.
Not sure if it's true, but I heard Al wanted to parody Purple Rain by calling it Yellow Snow with a dog peeing on the snow.
Yellow snow.
It sounds Zappa to me.
All this conversation on law is making me dizzy. Just lay it down the line and be truthful.
Al, is great.
If you're turning down weird Al you have no sense of humour.
Love Paul and love Prince but wish they hadn't been so snobby.
Na Paul is right, the meat industry is evil and Paul not giving Al permission shows he has convictions, it has been said Paul would agree to another parody just not that
Who turns down Weird Al? Now we know.
People who don't need it.

It tortures me that I don't know if his hair is real or not
Al's naturally curly hair is growing out of his head, what's your problem?
Go back to pictures of him as a kid. He's got naturally curly hair.
@@sophiet1576 no, that's not what I meant. Since most men tend to loose their hair with age, I thought, maybe he's wearing a wig now, like, to keep up with the stage persona he has built with the amazingly curly hair he's known for. Chill...
