I was lucky enough to meet Weird Al back in the 80s. I recognized him on the street. I didn't want to bother him but I had to go up and say hi and tell him how much I enjoyed his music. We talked for about 5 minutes and then he told me he was starving and was on his way to Pizza Hut and invited me to join him! I of course accepted and it is one of the most memorable events of my life. Al is an amazing person!
I worked one of his shows. The goofy guy on stage is just an act. Backstage he was a total professional. Gave his band notes after the show about areas they needed to work on while he was wearing a crab costume. Floored me
At a Weird Al concert I went to, after the show fans were getting pictures and albums autographed. A young girl had a panic attack because she was so excited to meet Al. He stopped everything and sat with her for a long while just calmly talking to her like an old friend. Greatest human I've ever met.
Al is a real musician man. people like to gag on his parodies but the man is truly an excellent songwriter. if you havent heard it already listen to genius in france
Bout 30 years ago after his concert, I drove Al discreetly around the beach of wildwood nj so he could ride roller coasters... Then he took me on the bus to meet the band - they all signed a “bad hair day” shirt for me and sent me on my way. Thanks Al. 👍🏽
I was privileged enough to meet Al before one of his shows at a local casino. He is my idol. He took the time to speak to me and make that moment so special for me. He shook my hand and allowed my wife to take a picture of he and I. He is the nicest most genuine man.
The thing that Jay forgets is that Al is even more of a showman than he is. When he's performing, he really doesn't hold much back and he has basically zero shame. The perfect stage performer!
I'm a musician BECAUSE of Weird Al. I got my mom and I tickets to see him for her 61st birthday. I splurged and got good seats in the second row, and I actually managed to buy the seats directly behind the two tallest and fattest members of the entire audience. And I mean they were huge! The first time I saw Al was on the Running With Scissors tour in 2001. He played the outdoor stage at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in the freezing cold and rain!!!! That was a transformative experience. I owe all my passion for music and my entire career to Weird Al.
and still looks like he hasn't aged since 30...... also he's far more talented than most give him credit for..... he does like 3 types of songs, parody, polka compilation and themed original songs parodies are obvious, eat it, white and nerdy etc, the polka compilations are polka versions of many popular songs all rolled into a medley compilation and the themed songs are like dare to be Stupid which was done in Devo's style but I'd need to really study his albums to figure out what the others are Al has always had a knack for capturing the essence of what made a song cool or fun and replicating it in a fun way that makes you laugh, he's truly a valued treasure long live Weird Al Yankovic!
Watching Weird Al and Jay Leno driving around to accordion music, is like watching Fozzie Bear and Kermit drive a 1951 Studebaker to Hollywood. This is pure gold.
Someone has made a video of Fozzie and Kermit in the Studebaker, only it's set to Deep Cover by Dre and Snoop. As in Fozzie sings Dr. Dre's parts and Kermit sings Snoop Dogg's parts. I loved the Muppets as a child and hadn't laughed so hard in a long time when I saw that.

"Weird Al" has been in the upper tier of my favorite musicians (and people) ever since. The guy's never stopped... never even slowed down in all that time! What a gift to humanity the man is...
OMG, when Al jumps over the seat to grab his accordion & play, I'm dying laughing at this point! We need more episodes like this! Awesome job Jay & Al! 🤣❤
Al is a national treasure, not simply because of his talents, but because he is a decent human being. May he reap all of the blessings and privileges he deserves.
I think they took themselves very seriously and had serious excess and serious success. Now they can be themselves without anything to prove; their brand speaks for them and they just have... freedom. If more Americans invested in hard work and vision fulfillment we’d be the richest nation on earth. Instead, we’ve become the wealthiest nation on earth but full of people seeking comfort thinking they deserve something because they see other people who live better than they do. Weird Al and Jay both had a vision, work ethic, and kept going in the direction that would fulfill their vision every time a door opened. Taking themselves seriously removes luck from the equation and makes it a bonus: where planning and opportunity meet.
I’m thankful to have had the opportunity to meet Al, shake his hand and thank him for all the great music over the years. God bless him and may he continue to be a shining beacon of joy in this crazy world.
First time I have ever seen Jay with a forced smile. I loved it, you know Jay is the master of making his guests blush with embarrassment. I think Weird Al got him good by playing the accordion
Just like you can tell Al really CARED about his old Belvedere. Honestly Jays youtube show is so much better then the network version. One is all about the cars the other is all about the celebrity and maybe a little about cars.
The best entertainers are the guys that are comfortable in their own skin. Funny has nothing in common with f bombs ect, it is just regular stuff with good timing. Weird Al is one of a kind. Took my son and his buddies to see him live, not sure who had more fun. Very clever parody
Some kid skate boarding with his friends, "Guys, you are not going to believe this!! I just saw Weird Al Yankovic playing an accordion while Jay Leno drove this old white beater station wagon."
😂😂🤣🤣 The authentic affects of Jay Leno being forced to listen to an accordion was absolutely apocalyptically hilarious! I’ve been binge watching these garage shows with Jay, and I got to say this one tops them all with that finale.
I had instructed Weird Al's music played at my wedding reception instead of boring funeral dinner music. It was great!, In line at the buffet singing "Eat it!" With friends and family, Priceless!!!
After hearing Weird Al on the Dr Demento show as kids, me and my friend each bought a copy of the “Another One Rides the Bus” single. But for us as 4th graders, the b-side of “Gotta Boogie” was one of the funniest things we had ever heard. Thanks Weird Al.
I'll never forget listening to Dr. Demento in my youth, hearing Weird Al's first stuff, accordion and all, My Bologna, and Another One Rides the Bus. Who would have dreamed of the heights he'd achieve. And couldn't happen for a nicer guy. And Jay, 'takes one to know one. Also a great success and genuine good guy and fellow car nut.
Al's gentleness shines so bright he is a beacon of happiness like Mr Roger, Elmo or Robin Williams. Never change Al and thank you for the countless hours of fun
You know you’ve made it as a musician when Weird Al calls. You know you’ve made it in life when your car radio dies and Weird Al plays live in your car. Priceless …
I saw Weird Al, in 1982, at the Chi-Chi's in Rochester, NY. Great show! I love Jay's pained look while he tries to concentrate on driving, as Weird Al happily bangs away on his accordion. That's a crew that knows what makes good television. I have been a victim of "good television" but sacrifices must be made.
Weird Al is a true artist who can perform at the drop of a hat inside a Plymouth Belvedere station wagon with his accordion, while being driven by Jay Leno!!! Talk about the twilight zone!
Man, I've been writing music off and on for years, and I've always struggled with lyrics. And this is one of Weird Al's EARLIEST songs? That man is a genius at lyrics.
Weird Al will never get old. He will always be a big funny kid at heart. I was probably 12 or 13 and saw him in concert in the mid 90's, i think right when "Bad Hair Day" came out. Awesome show and he did change outfits pretty much after every song, good times lol
These are the cars that took us through hard times. When all we needed was a pair of pliers, a screwdriver and a crescent wrench, In our back pockets. Something that always started. Now cars cost a fortune to fix.
Ahhh, brings back memories. Memories of three children in matching green outfits sewn by my dear mother and traveling down the highway to California from West Texas. Our green 1961 station wagon overheating at the Salton Sea. I swear the movie ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation’ was based on our trip. We even had an aunt tagging along to Disneyland and Marineland. After that station wagon became history, my dad bought a ‘67 Buick station wagon which we still had years later when I took my driving test. It was not easy to parallel park. Like Al, we moved into the house I grew up in in 1959 and my folks sold it in 1977. He’s a bit younger than me but I was also a radiohead and listened faithfully to the Dr. Demento show in high school.
I've known Al since college at Cal Poly and this is the best interview I've ever heard him do. Here he's not so much "Weird" as he is just Al. Good stuff.
@@GlennDavey Glorious Showbizzz eh tinseltown only gets newer and thus younger over the years partially off the work of our stars. Of course they themselves don't quite fare as well. although to be fair to an extent one can replace parts to stay young. But go overboard and become Cersace or MJ. I feel the severity of the mishaps from botched surgeries & how (for lack of a better word) "un-gracefully" the surgeries age far outweighs the subtle differences gained from good surgeries
I always loved when weird al released a new album. Back when I was a kid, and cared about the Grammys, I watched when he won for eat it. I was little but I remember getting so excited and jumping on the couch. I hope he never stops
I did the same; I still have reel-to-reel tapes in a box somewhere of those 1970s episodes. I remember hearing Weird Al's first recording live on the air.
@@DadbrosGarage I haven’t seen him play live, but I’m told he always puts on a fantastic show. I think a lot of people who’ve never heard of him would be blown away.
I love how Jay had the look on his face of "I just stepped in fresh dog poop, but it won't last long" the whole time that Al was playing his accordion!
Right on Jay this was a car of my youth,I'm 62 and I had one in my 20's only mine had a 390 rarer lots of power and NOT fuel efficient.Good to see you and weird Al.Keep on cruising Jay we love it.

I remember seeing him at a B52's concert. He was two rows in front of me in the cheaper seats. I was surprised by how tall he really is.
Bout 30 years ago after his concert, I drove Al discreetly around the beach of wildwood nj so he could ride roller coasters... Then he took me on the bus to meet the band - they all signed a “bad hair day” shirt for me and sent me on my way. Thanks Al. 👍🏽
may call him Weird Al but at my age,57 seems more normal then the weird whatevers around today.
He does seem like a really decent guy who managed to make it big, while keeping that core value.
What a memory to have! That would be a dream for me! My first, of many, was "Dare to be Stupid".

I met him after shows a couple of times, he really is the nicest guy.
The look of anguish on Jay Leno's face while Weird Al brazenly plays his song while ignoring Jay's obvious discomfort is hilarious
I think Jay was probably acting
I was thinking the same thing! He looks like he’s in pain 🤣🤣🤣
An accordion can entertain 100 people easily without amplification. It must have been REALLY loud in that car.
Jay was loving it LoL 😂
@@Joreel I dont think so "but on w/the show".

Disappointed in Jay Leno and crew, they put his accordian in the car, but they didn't mic his vocals. Where is the respect for this great performer?
Can’t go wrong with Weird Al! He KNOWS how to entertain and Jay is a great straight man. Fun episode 👍
I do not think he ever turns it off. He is always Weird Al.
@@jonathangilbertson3623 No kayfabe (as in pro wrestling lol ). He is who he is

When Al's playing, Jay looks like a dad having to put up with his crazy kid. 😂
I was waiting for the famous phrase, Don't make me stop this car! From Jays mouth!
That's clearly the vibe they were going for: an outing in the family car with "dad" at the wheel.
"I swear if you play that thing ONE more time!!!!"
My BF got Weird Al tickets as a graduation present and took me with him. Still one of the best shows I have seen live, and I am a musician.
I saw him live twice, he’s the best. So energetic and talented.

Weird Al, a man whose career has lasted longer than all of the artists he has parodied.
Well, mostly anyway. MJ's dead, and Chamillionaire got hella rich off investments so he doesn't have to rap another day of his life.

An easily overlooked thing is his how good a musician Weird Al really is.
And his band who sound exactly like the original artists. They are also one of the oldest touring bands with the original members.

I can't believe Weird Al is 61 years old. This man doesn't age.
I personally think he spends off hours beheading other immortals until the time of the gathering
We age every single second non-stop.

Lmfao I always wondered how new accordions come into the world. I’ve never seen one for sale. 😂😂
Weird Al helped me get through a very bullied childhood life, I love this man! Gives all of us nerds some hope.
Jay's face is priceless when he's fighting the headache he's getting from the accordion in close quarters. It can be loud up close.
Weird Al was the first concert I ever went to! 20 years later I still know half of songs by heart! Huge inspiration! Thanks Al!!
now there is a man who couldn't care less about what people think of him.
The opposite of a narcissist!
@@kenblank9892 lol soooooo correct
I'm assuming you're speaking of Jay. He seems so uninvolved. I say this yet I'm only halfway through the clip.
@@schweddy2325 - He thanked the crew for putting the accordion in the back seat. Seems lest than grateful... : D
Definitely an introvert.
I have never seen Jay stunned into silence before...
Congrats Al!
:D
Wired Al is great. Both him and Leno don’t take themselves too seriously.
Great finish on the squeeze box.
Wired? So it's Skynet then
Al eschews drugs and stimulants.
This interview is maybe my all time favorite! 🤣🤣🤣 classic car, classic comedy, classic entertainers... just love it!
I’m thankful to have had the opportunity to meet Al, shake his hand and thank him for all the great music over the years. God bless him and may he continue to be a shining beacon of joy in this crazy world.
“The house that he grew up in” I don’t think weird Al has never grown up - That makes him awesome
The house he got taller in
Yes!! He’s still a kid at heart. ❤️
Don't you mean "ever"?
ever
Growing old is inevitable. Growing up is optional.
Weird Al and Leno, and Old parody songs, Squeezebox and cringes, and rides that last too long. - these are a few of my favorite things
Cars with red seats and with white vinyl headliners...
@@nlpnt Paint that's so shiny you need to wear blinders, watching the video while Weird Al sings, these are a few of my favorite things...
"Squeeze-box"= Concertina.
Indeed! Thanks for the clarification.- Always good to learn.
Holly crud you are a poet Alen Marks
That was good
You can tell that Jay is a HUGE fan of the accordion. 😁
Driving down the road with Weird Al playing the accordion in my passenger seat is my life's greatest dream.
Sure isn't Jay's, that is for sure, he looked like he was barely tolerating the bit.
Oh and I would like to say, I share the same dream. the man is awesome.
@@coyotetrickster5758 Did you hear Jay say, "It's such a subtle instrument" there at the last?
Weird Al Designing my house, is my life's greatest dream lol
Long time fan of the Dr.Demento show, Jay Leno, and of course Weird Al. And they're all in one video!
Yeah kind of surreal..... I need a drink!
This was more entertaining than any of today's late night shows.
Orange man bad does lose it's appeal after saying it 10000 times
@@after_midnight9592 It never becomes less true.
The best entertainers are the guys that are comfortable in their own skin. Funny has nothing in common with f bombs ect, it is just regular stuff with good timing. Weird Al is one of a kind. Took my son and his buddies to see him live, not sure who had more fun. Very clever parody
@@after_midnight9592 You talking about the game show host who tried to make himself dictator-for-life?
True. This video only slightly sucked.
"I wanna thank the crew for putting that back there without telling me"
You can tell they just like to have fun.
I don't remember how I found the Dr. Demento show but so glad I did back then: 99 Dead Baboons, Squirrels (Beastie Boys parody), Boot To The Head...
I never realised Weird Al was such a nice guy!! This is one of my more favourite Jay Lenos
He doesn't need to get permission or pay royalties to make a parody but he always has.
I work with the dude and always let people know he's one of the nicest guys I have ever met
Sounds like a great guy....the entertainment industry needs more folks like him....actually our world does too....
Al goes out of his way to play small county fairs and the like when he could clearly play in stadiums and totally rake in the money.
I brought my kids to see him in concert and it was great.
Al's gentleness shines so bright he is a beacon of happiness like Mr Roger, Elmo or Robin Williams. Never change Al and thank you for the countless hours of fun
Weird Al plays the annoying passenger with exquisite perfection. Love the ending!
I would watch episodes of "Belvedere Cruisin" every week.
Wow; that *does* sound like an 80s sitcom, doesn't it?
Weird Al is a national treasure and should be on the face of the $3 bill. Love that guy
Second! The only hitch to that is that there's a law that no living person can have their face on money.
Only a genius like Weird Al could get me to sit through 11 minutes of Jay Leno.
Truth
nail on the head
This speaks to me

Too true!
Weird Al doesn't get older, just wider. At some point he will envelope the world in a delightful hug.
For a sec I thought you were calling him fat.

You know you’ve made it as a musician when Weird Al calls. You know you’ve made it in life when your car radio dies and Weird Al plays live in your car. Priceless …
had a smile on my face watching the whole episode . Thank you Jay and Weird Al! much more entertaining then any of today's talk shows!!
Weird Al is just a nice guy and that’s what makes him so cool!
Jay and Al had good chemistry. Let's see more Weird Al.
Weird Al is a class act. Probably the most grounded celebrity to come out of the 80's!
Love it! "Thanks to the crew for sneaking the accordion in the back" hahaha
"Weird" Al is more SANE than anyone simply because he's "weird".
“Sing it sister!”
Absolutely true!
My biggest memory of Al is him playing Rambo in a movie and the Communists shooting at him from 3 feet away and still missing him...
were all weird in our own way and yet the same at the same time.
funny how life works.
@@BuzzLOLOL UHF 🤣
Weird Al is a true artist who can perform at the drop of a hat inside a Plymouth Belvedere station wagon with his accordion, while being driven by Jay Leno!!! Talk about the twilight zone!
Such a good human! Saw him live. He is so good to his fans, but is always very humble. A great person I have always looked up to.
Man, I've been writing music off and on for years, and I've always struggled with lyrics. And this is one of Weird Al's EARLIEST songs?
That man is a genius at lyrics.
Great comedians and a great old car. Doesn't get much better than that! Thank you for the trip down memory lane. 😎👍
Weird Al will never get old. He will always be a big funny kid at heart. I was probably 12 or 13 and saw him in concert in the mid 90's, i think right when "Bad Hair Day" came out. Awesome show and he did change outfits pretty much after every song, good times lol
Got to see him in 85......at the Hall County fair in Nebraska.
Weird Al seems like a genuinely lovely person!
Hes seems like such a nice, genuine guy. Would love to meet him one day. He just exudes happiness
I love Weird Al so much. We just saw him again in concert 2 days ago. What a great performer.
The definition of a true gentleman is someone who knows how to play accordion... but chooses not to. 😅😂🤣
THAT's why I continue to play.... :)
Also, a man who gets out of the shower to pee...accordion to Buddy Hackett.
An optimist thinks to himself, at least no one is going to play bagpipes while this guy plays the accordion.
Well they do say that the definition of perfect pitch is throwing an accordion into a skip and hitting all the banjos.
@@someguy2135 So in rips the guy on Kazoo!
Its good that Al can talk about his parents. They passed away so tragically. Really Sad
Didn't know. Looked it up. They died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Which is somewhat ironic as they are driving in a Belvedere emitting such fumes.
@@robwebnoid5763 that's not ironic. It'd be ironic if his parents were big advocates for carbon monoxide safety.
its so sad they were probably great people like Al is
I think Al’s comment that hit home with me the most was “ I always knew I’d lose my parents one day but both at the same time I never imagined. “ 😢
My first memory of Weird Al him singing “Another one rides the bus” on Dr. Demento. Iv loved him ever since.
These are the cars that took us through hard times. When all we needed was a pair of pliers, a screwdriver and a crescent wrench, In our back pockets. Something that always started. Now cars cost a fortune to fix.
and maybe a roll of duct tape. I miss those days and those cars.
"I want to thank my staff for putting that accordion back there without telling me ..." Jay plays a great straight man.
He actually designed his house that he lives in with his wife and daughter! Its actually very different than what you would think
I've known Al since college at Cal Poly and this is the best interview I've ever heard him do. Here he's not so much "Weird" as he is just Al. Good stuff.
Two of my favorite entertainers reminiscing as they drive around Lynwood.

The bloated, deformed carcasses of the entertainers our youth

What makes Jay Leno's Garage so good is it's about the people and the stories behind the cars they drive/drove.
Al is just so down to earth. You can just talk to him. He’s so cool!
I always loved when weird al released a new album. Back when I was a kid, and cared about the Grammys, I watched when he won for eat it. I was little but I remember getting so excited and jumping on the couch. I hope he never stops

Thousands of us did this as kids.
I did the same; I still have reel-to-reel tapes in a box somewhere of those 1970s episodes. I remember hearing Weird Al's first recording live on the air.
Awesome, just awesome. I remember watching all his videos on MTV or Much Music. Good memories. Thank you, Weird Al, from Saskatchewan Canada.
