SELF SABOTAGE: How JaMarcus Russell Became The 'Biggest' Bust Of All Time! Stunted Growth

  • If you’ve seen the all state sugar bowl in 2007 and for some reason it was the last game you ever watched, you’d call me a liar if I told you #2 under center for LSU didn’t become the next great quarterback and revolutionized the game for the next 10-15 years. He was that good in that game, and many feel it’s the game that helped JaMarcus Russell land as the #1 pick in the NFL draft. It’s not like Russell hadn’t heard similar things before in his years at LSU or in high school being ranked 4th overall as a pro style quarterback. But #1 pick, now that’s a different level, one that comes with a lot of expectations, especially in a sport like football, where you’re not always allowed time like Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady to develop. JeMarcus was seen as a quarterback you could throw right into the fire and no matter the situation, he could lead an NFL team. His bowl game performance solidified that, and the Oakland Raiders made him the #1 pick. I remember that year, and could still recall the hype leading up to the draft was all JaMarcus. Physically you could understand why. For a quarterback, he was the perfect mix of size, strength, enough speed and an easy flick of the wrist passing style that got you out your seat every time he went for the deep pass. He won a lot of games at LSU behind deep bombs, and by career end, he was 3rd all time at LSU with a 25-4 record and 2nd all time in completion percentage (61.9) and career touchdown passes (52). He seemed to have it all. He was 6’6 and built in the image of a leader on the outside, but inside he was still a kid, afraid and unsure really. It didn’t help his confidence to come in and have possibly the worst 3 years to begin his career he could have, which made him believe the rumors that maybe he was becoming a bust. The biggest of all time. Here's How JaMarcus Russell Self Sabotaged His Career! Stunted Growth

      That’s an outdated stigma. The current ones in the pros can process a lot, presnap, going through 2 & 3 reads, read defenses, etc… Cam might be the only QB this applies to, and that’s because he works out and even he is able to make a depleted Pats offense work to some extent.

    Those fumble numbers are alarming. That’s what happens when your team doesn’t protect, but also you don’t protect yourself in the pocket. Even though he was a big QB, he was getting popped regularly. With his poor training and work ethic, he was an easy sack.

    A lot of people don’t know this, but he had a lot of personal issues going on in his life. I was in Alabama & knew several older people in his circle and some of his family members. The straw that broke JaMarcus’s back was when his uncle/father figure Ray Russell (a popular radio DJ & comedian in the Mobile, AL area who had connections with Steve Harvey and Rickey Smiley, just to name a few) was diagnosed with a bad heart, Russell jumped to the pros to try helping him out and to get a transplant (that was a prime reason why he wanted so much money). And when Ray died, Russell went to shit. Not trying to sound like I’m making excuses for him, but he just didn’t handle Ray’s death that well...I just wish he could’ve gotten his head together in time to make something of himself in the pros.
    On the flipside, Russell has (last I checked) landed an assistant coaching job at a high school in his hometown, so maybe he can use that experience to pass some cautionary words of wisdom to the kids coming up...

      @@AS-xl9gb Facts bro and did you read his player's tribune story and see his interview w The Pivot Podcast? It's crazy how people were quick to put 100% blame on J-Rock, but's it really 50/50. Al Davis should've never drafted him especially since he wasn't wanted by the coaching staff that made it a toxic environment. Russell holding out during his rookie yr made it worse. The Raiders had no WRs nor O-Line to make his job easy. Russell should've seeked therapy after losing both uncles in the same year back to back. Russell should have perfected his craft and seek treatment for his codeine addiction early on. JaMarcus is now living his best life post-career. However it would've been nice to see a comeback story where he was giving a 2nd chance and reaching his potential as a QB; sometimes somebody has fall for others to see what not to do.

    It's amazing how someone who has never reached the level of success this man has but can put labels on him. Bad offensive line and different coaches and system. Carr has been giving 8yrs and no bust label? I bet a black man didn't put this out. 🤔

    • @FreshPrincex4
      @FreshPrincex4 2 роки тому +1

      Carr was never the problem in his tenure so far. I'm not a raiders fan but carr actually have been the best QB they had since Gannon.
      Russell on the other hand was lazy, idiotic, didn't study the playbooks, nor watched film. They gave this man a blank tape to watch and asked him the next day what he thought. Dude said "looks good" there's no excuses for that.
      QB's like Patrick Mahomes, Dak Prescott, Lamar Jackson..those guys aren't failures like this bum here was.

    • @elliemyers6435
      @elliemyers6435 4 місяці тому

      @@FreshPrincex4 Yep....Busts are busts, regardless of color. People say Ryan leaf is the biggest bust of all time, and what color would he be? Johnny Manziel, another bust...(A little bit less so given he was drafted in the 20s, but a bust nonetheless...)Brian bosworth, Tony Mandarich...busts. If you can't play, you can't play, regardless of your race. Not only did the raiders do the blank tape thing, but apparently they also had to bribe him with McDoubles just so he would attend film sessions. Dude had the talent, but just had absolutely no work ethic whatsoever.
