I had a ‘50 coupe and helped a friend put a 283 in his ‘49 coupe. The original transmission will bolt up to the 235 bell housing. Chevy used the same four bolt pattern for several years. The problem we had with keeping the in closed drive shaft and rear end was that it was geared too low. It was turning 3000 rpm at 45 mph. We had to replace the rear end and go to an open drive shaft system.
