Being from Santa Barbara Calif, Its like a dream that your waters are so clear, and fish big brownies. New to the fly fishing, I have much to learn. but watching great anglers like you and friends I've learned a lot. Catch and Release people. keep em coming. Awesome Mike. Thanks P.j.
Great video guys, without all the hype, not trying to sell gear but being informative , logical and demonstrating sound thinking and approach to fishing. Excellent.
Hello from Vancouver Island, BC. Thanks for sharing your fishing adventures. We are busy stalking our winter steelheads. I will be checking out more of your fishing videos. Thanks again.
Another awesome video, they keep getting better and better. I almost preferred watching this to fishing... not quite lol but seriously keem em coming they make the days when Im stuck at home much more enjoyable and always inspire me to get out there.
Another great clip Mike, good to see you getting out before no doubt a busy season for you two. Nice water, great angling and thanks for taking us on the adventure with you. Steak and mushroom sauce for dinner, I must be doing something wrong on my trips haha! Nearly bought the Flex but the Sage Pulse won out for me, horses for courses.
Excellent videos, great skill fishing and guiding. When I move back to NZ I'll definitely get a guide to get to the best spots. Definitely got my fair share of nice fish from that South Island.
2:05 - That's a good look from Anton. Kind of medieval style, a trout man looking more like a Pikeman. That's a beautiful stretch of water around 10:40 .
mikefsher thankfully yes! Really missed not coming last summer...will be making up for it this time. Planning fishing first two weeks of February, probably deep south.
Mike, I've been following your UA-cam channel for a while now. There is no other channel on UA-cam that puts up better fly fishing videos than you. I have watched this particular video four times since you uploaded it. I am commenting because I just saw you in a video on the Orvis website (Backcountry: South Island, or something like that). I hope spots like that bring you the notoriety and the business you deserve. Anyway, I love and envy your work. Getting to NZ is a dream of mine. If I ever get to come, I will surely seek your services.
Thanks for the kind words Chris. I've been in quite a few fly fishing DVD's and have produced a few of my own if you are intertested... It's a labor of love so to speak, so fun to share with like -minded people. Cheers!
One of your best videos yet Mike! Scenery looks somewhat familiar... The one thing you taught me about battling NZ browns is the use of side pressure. I think in the past I played fish a little too soft in fear of breaking them off but this video shows just how much pressure you really can put on fish (using 5x tippet?). Anton did really well to get that one out of the blackberry bush!
Glad you liked it Dave, if you want to know how little pressure you are really putting on them try lifting a 1 pound block of butter with a 5wt rod and 5x tippet. Feels like you're gonna break the rod. That's 1 pound of pressure!!
WOW that's so awesome. Your streams look so beautiful over there. My big fish are you small fish and my small fish are your bait. LOL Awesome video mate.
Finally got my fill by watching a clip of yours! On ya fella, great watch... Fark me, weather been poop here, back country next week unless thwarted again... I can feel it's gonna be good... gotta spare few days?!
As I watch more of these channels, and keep coming back to yours, I am thinking of your videos as those done by the zen master. You really tell the story with a few words and a little background music. I am amazed at how you often call the shot of what a fish is gonna do. Great stuff... Does Anton also have a channel?
great filming again as always :-9 I,m start dreaming about fishing in NZ from the otherside of the globe :-) hope you guys are oke after the earthquake :-(
Cheers! Nah, no need if you play fish properly - carrying a big clunky net because you haven't learned well the art of landing fish just makes no sense to me...
This video is awesome. Beautiful fishing and beautiful trouts. Mike, I would like to know what sort of indicator you use for upstream nymph fishing technique. Thanks.
Great video. I see that u change angle of rod when u fight fish, right side and left side. Is it any instruktion online how to doit, or can u explain when to change sides like u do? Its a mayby long quastion so if its alot to wright i understand, u dont need to, hahah, thx.
Hey mike. Have been following your channel for a while. Absolutely amazing footage and it's nice to see your appreciation for the amazing country we live in. Keep it up! Was wondering what leaders you use? Do you make your own or use knot less tapered from a store? I know most of it comes down to good casting but I see you have long leaders and still get good turnover. Tight lines from the North Island Josh
hey mikefisher, I'm an interest lad in fly fishing and have been casting and learning the basics for a while now. if you wouldn't mind at around 18:00 u changed your added a nymph to your lure when the fish rejected it. Just wondering why u did this instead of seeing if he'd have bit second time round?
@@mikefsher Mike thanks for the response. What a great song. I love it. Im a harmonica player and wanted to play it but couldn't find the music score. You will not remember me but I ran into you when I was fishing with my brother from South Africa on the Wangapeka a few years back. You were with your Christian who you guide a lot. Thanks for the response and yes there was acknowledgement of the composer just not the name of the song.
absolute how to clinic boys , awesome fish , awesome fishing nice to see people who know the value of anational treasure and handle them that way , i do have a question that might be dumb butt like my dad always told me there are no dumb questions just dumb people , some of those browns looked kinda almost sea run lots more chrome colored than the other beauties , but that is not true , how are my rainbows holding up over there from sonoma creek , thats what ive been fishing the last ten years , ocean run chome steelhead that enter the river to meet a thousand seals otters sea lions eagles ospreys , and the 1% of the fish that survive their first twenty four hours are for the people . iwas thinking maybe we could back half a million sea lions seals and otters to give you the real expierience we enjoy ,,,,, nothing like being unable to sleep the night the conditions are going to be prime to drive in the dark sixty miles to the river another fifteen to avoid people layer up for the icy cold morning quietly wade as dawn breaks into position strip afew feet of line off your hook and just as you start your backcast two seals rocket into your tailout sending pairs of third run three ft plus chrome pairs of steel heads into the air as the seal s breach swat stab and shut down the stretch for the day , im sending the a petition to our new humble , sophisticated , admirable president the trumper if he will allow us to bag six seals a day we could heat our houses feed and clothe the homeless and ferstilize our gardens, others will work all day swinging spey rods to have a seal sleeping on a log wait for someone to hook up before he will enter the water , ,only thing you can do for the sake of the fish is come tight and pop him off before the seal gets them , i wish the white sharke knew how many seas were inthe first few miles of the river that would be nature keeping it fair , anyhow i can ramble way to much ..... loved your expert level display and the pristine look of your landscape
Jeez - thanks for letting me know! Not sure how i've been making a living so long guiding with so many glaring flaws. Put up a video yourself showing us all how it's done mate?! Please! No? Didn't think so...

Thanks a lot for the kind words - nice to maybe demystify things a little so others can see that it is mainly just the basics done well...
Finally a fishing video with the sound of nature and comments instead of HORRIBLE music, well done:)

What song is this that you used? Great video by the way.
Great video guys, without all the hype, not trying to sell gear but being informative , logical and demonstrating sound thinking and approach to fishing. Excellent.

Simply that the fish refused and if a fish has the chance to take and doesn't, there's a reason so you change...
okay thanks, new to the game... obviously:)
i use a magnet and a lanyard fixed to the net... it's comfortable
hey mike, planing on my NZ dream what wt rod and line set up? and waders or no?
I have to come New Zealand for fishing
I am trying to establish the name of the tune plated in this video. No credits that I can. Can anyone help.
