Beautiful video, wonderful stick men, incredible area, fish unbelievable. And all credit due to the photograph and the editor! That last take was incredible.
mikefsher possibly next Jan, but nothing booked yet. Had a disaster this year, work managed to book me on a simulator course when I was supposed to be fishing. Had re-book my flight, 3 weeks fishing ended up being 5 days!
As an avid flyfisher here in Scotland with family living in NZ, I am really interested in fishing when I get the chance to visit. It would be an advantage if there was more information on the tackle used in these videos, rod length, rating, what reels are best for these monsters and leader strength etc. And especially what fly patterns are they using. For a visiting angler, all this info on what to bring would make life easier. The quality of these fish is outstanding, they are like salmon.
Awesome fishing.. I am hoping to visit New Zealand from the uk next March/April, can you tell me if the rivers you are fishing are accessible to the visiting public with an appropriate license?? .. the trip itself is gonna cost a small fortune so I am hoping to try without a guide as hiring one would seriously eat away my budget.. I probably won’t catch much but just to be in that beautiful place will be a dream come true .. any tips or advice would be much appreciated... 👍🏼👍🏼
I am about 2 werks away from buying Scott G Series, saving last money. Wonder if G series have enough backbone to fight this big fish ( not that i will ever get this big fish, but u know, just i case, hahah). U guys are making great videos, nothing better on UA-cam. Amazing work
Zeko Kasu thanks for the kind words. The ability of the G Series to fight big fish would come down to what rod weight you want, I'd go at least 5wt and maybe 6 which would be fine
Maybe a silly question but, What pants are you always wearing with your shorts and gravel guards? I'm looking for something lighter than my breathable for the warming months fly fishing!
@@mikefsher well it looks insanely comfortable and cooling. Definitely giving it a go for summer trout fishing this year! Haha. What kind of gravel guards do you use. They look way better than my orvis socks with guards.
mikefsher Thx Mike, just had a week in Gore trying to get some dry fly action. Alas apparently we should have been there last week! Mataura was a bit coloured but some good fun on the nymphs. Are you guiding in NZ, where are you based? P
James Hebrard cheers. They get to good sizes mainly due to perfect water temperature range throughout the year, water quality and not high numbers of fish per km - meaning they have a large available food source to choose from.
I understand what you're saying, but there's something else about that diet that seems incongruous, that is the large gape. With such large mouths, they could eat quite large prey, maybe even each other. Many biologists would believe that mouth size is well-correlated with prey size. None of this take away from the beauty of your videos. I've always wanted to fly fish for trout, but have never been in a place where I could do it in a practical way. Thanks for sharing your magnificent environment.
Love your vids Mike, absolutely awesome! quick question whats that device on the backpack at 9:56? Keep up the brilliant work! looking forward to your next upload :)
Hi mike. I'm looking into coming over this summer some time, love to book in a day with you. What time of the year would you recommend? Also, you guys looked pretty well rugged up for november- still a bit chilly, was it? Your videos are the reason i'm getting keen! So well done!
Hi there and thanks for the inquiry. Its a little cooler over October to the end of November but warming fast through that period. Its not bad though at any time of our season, just be sure to have waders in case... I have some space in October between 14th and 23rd due to a cancellation, but id imagine this will not last long. I personally have little else available until March 5th - 9th which is a good time to come as well... Drop me an email @ mike@latitudeguiding.com and we'll see what we can do. Cheers!
Dude! Pardon my ignorance but why don’t you guys over there not wear waders? I see you do sometimes. Looks like your wearing long johns under shorts? What is that your wearing for waders? Another outstanding vid.
Hi Mike. What do you guys wear on your legs? It seems like you’re wearing wading boots over some leggings and socks of some sort. Are the socks waterproof? Are you managing to keep your feet dry? Cheers Rob
Another great video Mike, thanks for sharing! One question- I would like to see you and your guests take off their gloves when handling these magnificent fish. I believe they strip off the protective slime from the fish. This is what I’ve read and heard; is this not accurate?
Cachi - cheers for that. No, not here in NZ, there are no diseases or bacteria that effect fish negatively. This is from many other anglers and my own anecdotal evidence from 37 years of fishing here. The use of gloves on big fish helps with controlling for a quick photo as I've seen a few large fish dropped with bare hands which DOES hurt fish, often badly. To add to this further, in a predominately sight fishing fishery, we often catch the same fish more than once in a season and I have dozens of photos in support of the fact that they are completely unaffected each time. If I had seen any evidence of harm, I would obviously change practise. Maybe it has an effect where you fish, if so, don't wear gloves. I will continue to here, especially to keep sandflies (biting insects) severe sun and cuts off my hands.
mikefsher Thanks for the info, that's great to hear. Yeah, where I fish there's that risk and also the rate of mortality due to overplaying fish is quite high according to fish biologists. I figured that because NZ is a fishing destination, eventually anglers from around the world would spread all sorts of diseases they might carry on their boots and gear. The opposite has certainly happened as the NZ snail has invaded almost every fishery in the US. The elimination of felt soles has helped in fighting back the spread of invasive species. Cheers!
hey mike, another great video! thank you for providing such amazing content. I have one question: do you use barbless hooks? I'm relatively new to fly fishing and just curious about the different methods/techniques etc. Cheers!
Will Seitz cheers! No, I normally use barbed hooks for a variety of reasons but mainly cause as a guide, I don't want disgruntled clients at losing fish on the perception of it being because of barbless. Each to to his/her own I guess
Hey Mike I was just searching NZ fishing video's on UA-cam and noticed someone has stolen this video and used it as their own to try and sell stuff on amazon. If you put (Bella Bella spice of life) into the UA-cam search it should be one of the first things that show's up. I didn't go to the Amazon links but I thought you might want to know.

Not an awfully big fish??? You'd only hear that about a 6 - 7lbs trout in new zealand. You guys are blessed. Keep the vids coming man. Atb
NZ? Where is this?
Hi guys, which river(s) are you on? P
Peter Kirker I know one was the Nunya...
mikefsher Thx Mike, just had a week in Gore trying to get some dry fly action. Alas apparently we should have been there last week! Mataura was a bit coloured but some good fun on the nymphs. Are you guiding in NZ, where are you based? P
Excellent, Sirs. Two questions:
How do the fish attain such a large size eating just tiny insects?
Are you wearing wetsuits?
James Hebrard cheers. They get to good sizes mainly due to perfect water temperature range throughout the year, water quality and not high numbers of fish per km - meaning they have a large available food source to choose from.
James Hebrard not wetsuits, leggings or breathable waders

Thanks for sharing your magnificent environment.
Maybe the reason their density is low is because they eat each other! Surely, the females lay a large number of eggs. Low survivorship?
Trout are much like Deer in the respect that the males have large jaws full of sharp teeth (like stags have antlers) for fighting while spawning.
Is that for the UV or the fish?
what country is this ? beautiful !!!
New Zealand
