    How Interesting! This could explain it!! That cycle you see. A person uses wigs to grow out their hair for say 3 years with no breaks just WIGS! And you see it's growing cause everyone has that one back or side braid that's your "Look how Long My Hair IS!! :D" that you can whip out. But when they start wearing their Hair out it's thin and it's a different "thin"....... you know what it reminds you of: a leg out of a cast!!! Yes!! The leg just out is thinner than the other one! But its like a different thin...a loss of muscle thin maybe..... YES! That is what it's Like! So it almost like being so covered made it weak...................................(sigh).....crap.

      Tmarie2u what is the solution to growing hair out while wearing wigs? I don't want to wear my natural hair out.. it's a mess. So I prefer wigs. But if wigs harm my natural hair.. then what

      O Love I guess make sure you’re taking care of your hair weekly and also give yourself breaks. I know you said it’s a mess but it’ll come together once you start caring for it more and learn how to style :)

      So true. After years of wearing wigs I did grow length but my hair is so thin. It is hard to come out of wigs when you are used to the thickness of a wig. I am doing protein treatments trying to come out of wigs.

    to each is own, I've been wearing wig as a protective style since I started my natural hair journey 30 months ago I have retained 14 to 14 1/2 inches of hair so far as long as you take care of your natural hair you have nothing to worry about... good haircare is key

    That’s why you take breaks every moment you get. If you wear them to work take them off as soon as you get home. Don’t wear them on weekends unless you have a special engagement. I agree about what she is saying about staying covered up. I try and always let my hair breathe when I can. It really depends on your hair also I see some people wear wigs and their hair is super long and super thick.

    • @equallyyoked1
      @equallyyoked1 8 років тому +57

      Great comment! This is why i prefer wigs over weaves. You can take your wig off at the end of each day and let your hair breath. I plan to wear wigs for a year straight to see how much length I can retain. I just have to remember to keep my wig off in the house to let my scalp breath. I wash and deep condition every 2 weeks. I need to remember to spray my hair nightly with oil, water and a conditioner mixture.

    I decided to wear wigs as a protective style when I BC on 8/30/14. I wore my twa for about 2-3 months but it was very fragile and would shed alot. I knew that if I didn't mess with my hair everyday it would grow so I turned to wigs. I would shampoo and conditioner and DC, moisturize and twist my hair and put castor oil on my edges. I always made sure to have a silk scarf on under my wigs and let me tell youuuuuuu my hair grew, got stronger and my edges are thicker. I do let my hair breath after work and on wknds. 8/30/15 my one year naturalversary I will stop wearing wigs for awhile and wear my natural hair but in a lot of low maintenance styles.

    I never though about sewing a silk scarf inside a wig. Great tips you got there.
    If I can ad something to it, the combs are not safe for our hair (and edges), I remove them and use pin because I notice how the wig tend to fall back sometims (especially half-wigs) and it pull the hair and edges at the same time.

      Sister, do you consider scarfs in the same category as a wig? I'm asking because I transitioned to wearing scarfs vs wigs at work...but now after watching this video, I am concerned about less oxygen and sunlight? I wear a base silk and then another scarf on top, some are prima quality some are not as thick, but not see through. Do you think my scalp is breathing less? I may have to transition to a crochet, kind of in between a wig and a weave? Just not a the point of wearing my own hear completely naked. So to speak.
      Love your videos, I am going to use the updated onion recipe this weekend.

    I used wigs as a crutch when I first went natural, because I simply didn't know what to do with my hair. I also have to admit that I didn't like how I looked after my big chop. Sadly, this led to neglect and dependence upon them. They can be useful, but taking care of the hair "under there" is a must. Great video!

    This is great advice but don’t throw out the baby with the Bath water. Everybody hair is different. We can’t look at a video and be like no more wigs. If you been a natural for more than 2 years I think by now you should know your hair and have an understanding on what it likes and don’t like. I do agree your hair needs to breath. I have 4c hair and it thrives on protective styles. I made a conscious decision this year to only wear wigs. Braids and Sew ins were harsh on my hair. Any hairstyle I will do my 4c hair will shrink like no body business I love her though😊Bottom line know your hair! We look at these videos as guidance and seal it in stone but don’t stop it there, take her advice with a grain of salt. Everybody hair is different. I use to wear my hair out all the time and it will shrink and dry up because it likes to be protected. I live in Florida where it’s very humid. My hairstyle will look so different at the end of the day😂So at the end of the the day know what works for your crown.

I am now 21 months post relaxer and my hair is healthier than ever I keep my natural hair braided underneath moisturized ans seal with oil and alternate deep conditioning and protein treatment and its really been growing so yes with the proper hair and care regimen wigs can definitely grow your hair!

    I've never thought about wigs in this light before. definitely an eye opener. My sister wears wigs all the time because of the damage she got from flat ironing her hair every morning and trying to dye her bangs blonde. She has since went natural and she has grew a lot of beautiful healthy hair under her wigs. When she took the wig off one time her edges were thin but the rest of her hair was full and thick. I've been trying to convince her to wear her natural hair. She has no idea how to wear her natural hair (still stuck in her high school mentality of wanting to straighten her hair with heat everyday). She's became so dependent to wigs. All that beautiful healthy hair underneath smh.

    When I was younger I used wigs five days a week. And you were quite correct in saying your hair can become thinner and not have that alive feel and luster. So take it off just like you do your shoes when you get home. You can wear beautiful scarves if you don't want to show your hair, just don't tie them down tightly.
    I saw a long time ago where one UA-camr would sew in clips or bobby pins to secure a loosely tied scarf.

      How are you natural if you always wear wigs?

    • @xtelfolaj
      @xtelfolaj 9 років тому +98

      +Ashley Crystal, because my hair has no chemicals in my hair, thats how im natural. just because i wore a wig means it altered my hair texture.

      Christel Folaj so if you wore weave would you consider yourself natural as well?

      +Ashley Crystal , obviously. so just because i wear a protective style makes me less natural? my hair has no chemicals in it, therefore i have natural hair.

    I started doing the onion, garlic, and cayenne treatment as advertised on Greenbeauty about a month ago. I do it every other week. Since my edges and or hairline is bald what suggestions does Greenbeauty have for hair styling for those with bald edges; it is embarrassing as mentioned and I do not want to wear my hair out. As of right now, I have not had a wig on in two days. Also, I take my wig off at home after work. I take the wig off as often as I can. Is this enough to prevent my hair from thinning due to wig wearing. I only want to wear wigs until my edges hopefully fill in. Thank you.

    Thanks for this video. It's makes so much sense. I've been so dependent on my wig for more than two months now. To the point were the perimeter of my head (edges including the back of my head) Is thinning, fast! So now I'm looking for solutions to grow m back. To be honest it was thinning very slowly, and wearing the wig increased the speed. Although the rest of my hair is growing fine. I always see improvement, it just my edges that are my major concern now. I'm thinking of investing into a derma roller to renew the area of my scalp that is damaged. What do you think? Thanks again for your videos. It's soo helpful and thought through, and encouraging as well. You really remind your views to be patient and take practical realistic options. X

      So sorry about the hair thinning you are experiencing. The most important thing is to stop/remove the culprit completely. Apart from that create a low manipulation hair regimen that keeps your scalp clean, hair moistured and your scalp free from tension. You can also experiment and try different methods. This most important thing is to stay consistent and to create a hair regimen that you can stick with.

    What are your thoughts on folks who create a crochet wig on a netted cap that is sewn onto your own braids for long term wear? Is that safe and protective or not? Thanks so much!

    • @GreenBeauty
      @GreenBeauty  8 років тому +4

      It depends on how long term you're talking about but, other then that, I don't see anything wrong with it. As long its not too heavy or tight, you clean you scalp regularly and don't keep it on too long

    • @sisteryaya24
      @sisteryaya24 8 років тому +3

      Do you think 1 month is too long? I want to make sure my hair doesn't get damaged while in a protective style. I am mainly concerned about the band on the border of the cap that might rub against the hair and scalp and cause hair loss. My hair is finally healthy and filling in and I don't want to ruin it, lol! Thank you!

    • @GreenBeauty
      @GreenBeauty  8 років тому +4

      A month is not too long. As I mentioned in the video, make sure to take breaks. There's no reason to wear a wig 7 days a week. Also, don't ignore your concerns, if you are feeling any tension (small or large) then there is probably damage happening.

      I tried the arganl ife. shampoo and after just one wash my hair is soft to the touch with some body and shine. My hair also tangles easily, especially at the roots and ends, and after using the arganlife. shampoo I can actually run my fingers right through my hair from roots to tips. The smell is also very light and pleasant. I work out everyday and while ı don't sweat a river, ı need to wash my hair with something that won't dry it out and this shampoo will be perfect for that

    You said use SLS shampoo to wash, but what if your wig is dyed? That's one of the reasons I like wigs because I can have different hair colors,without having to damage my hair.
    Will using sheamoisture jbco and acv shampoo be enough?

    I wear wigs every day because I don’t understand my hair. Its thin, so I can’t do twist outs or braid outs. Its 4c so I can’t do wash and go. I don’t know how to maintain a wash and go overnight even if I wanted to wear my hair out. I’m stuck in a wig! Help!

    • @GreenBeauty

      Wearing wigs is not horrible. Just make sure not to neglect your hair underneath or you will get to a point where your hair and scalp is so damaged that you "NEED" wigs. If you want to eventually stop wearing wigs, Come up with a consistent hair regimen that keeps your scalp clean and your hair strands lubricated and moisturized. To help wake up sleeping hair follicles and thicken up your hair, you should also include my Onion Juice recipe in your hair regimen. Here is a link to the recipe - ua-cam.com/video/kv4hXO2wQaw/v-deo.html&lc=Ugx5Y0V1PLKtMQ1z0fB4AaABAg
      Remember that a hair regimen is no good if it's not consistent.

    I understand this but how come a lot of people who wear lace wigs today have really long hair? And it’s thick, plus with frontals they’re usually glued on and that lasts further for about 2 weeks?

    • @KinaBoo20
      @KinaBoo20 4 роки тому +1

      I think wig quality is better, the lace on alot of wigs doesn't seem to be as stiff anymore. Just my observation, I think wig grips have also helped alot of people along with the glue less method of applying lace. If someone knows how to already properly moisturize and protect their natural hair, it will only flourish. I know I've been having positive results as far as my hair growth with wigs. My hair is still thick around the edges and in the back. I have also mastered my moisturizing technique and cut my hair, to prevent split ends. I feel like people shouldn't wear wigs as a protective style until they fully learn how to take care of their hair. If protective styles were levels wigs would be one of the higher levels, not for a novice, it is a lot of work.

      O Love She's not saying that wearing wigs is bad for your hair. She is just reminding us to take care of our hair. But to also not be too dependant on them. And if we are to wear them we need to wear them in a way, that it protects all of our hair, including our edges. Wigs are beneficial! X

    what about color treated hair, is it safe to keep it under a wig for long periods of time? how bad could the breakage get?

    • @GreenBeauty
      @GreenBeauty  8 років тому +4

      Color-treated hair needs more TLC b/c the chemicals used breaks down hair and makes it weaker. So it doesn't take much to cause breakage. So, wigs are okay here and there but, super observant and change up what you are doing if you experience any discomfort of breakage. And make sure to deep condition your hair more often b/c wigs can cause your hair to dry out faster.
