I’m Colombian as well, and i showed the movie to my grandma… she cried her heart out. Turns out her mother had a similar story to Abuela Alma, where her husband was killed by conservatives during La Guerra De Los Mil Días, forcing her (my grandmother’s mother) to flee with her 4 children to the atlantic coast, far from the main conflict. I was shocked to learn this. And the more I ask my friends, the more I realize they too come from families affected by the civil war. It’s almost a majority experience

This was a great reaction, it just sucks that this scene is a super massive spoiler haha
I know other people translated the title for you, but to give a little more, it’s the story of two caterpillars who are in love, but they realize that they both have to go their separate ways and enter their cocoons so they can each transform into who they are supposed to be (butterflies, in the metaphor). In an interview, Lin-Manuel Miranda described it as how the couple (the grandmother and her husband) had to separate and ‘move on to their next forms’… which I think means he realizes he has to sacrifice himself and transform into a spirit of protection, while she has to move on and become matriarch of the family. It’s such a powerful metaphor!

  • @thisismaria27

this song is so incredible for many reasons. 1) it's a pivotal moment in the movie bc we get more depth of the backstory of the grandmother and how traumatic it must've been to lose so much in one night 2) this is the only song in the whole movie that isn't sung by any of the characters but from an outside voice 3) it's one of two songs sung completely in spanish in the movie and even if you don't speak spanish it still moves you in the way that it should bc the story says it all 4) this song explains the message of the movie so well that sometimes you have to close a chapter, face your trauma and stop hanging on so tight so that something new and beautiful can be created (the caterpillars becoming butterflies)

    Two little caterpillars
    In love
    Spending their nights
    And their dawns
    Full of hunger
    They keep on going
    And navigating a world
    That keeps on changing (x2)
    Two little caterpillars
    Stopping the wind
    As they hold each other
    Full of feelings
    They keep on growing
    And they don't know when
    To look for shelter
And the weather keeps on changing
    They are inseparable
And the weather keeps on changing
    Oh, caterpillars
Don't keep holding on to one another
    You need to grow apart
    And come back
    You'll keep on
    Forward
    Miracles are coming
    Chrysalis are coming
    You need to go on
And build your own future (x2)
    Two caterpillars
    Disoriented
    In two chrysalis
    Sheltered
    Oh, butterflies
    Don't hold on to tight
    You need to grow apart
    And come back
    You'll keep on

The quality of her music was influenced by her upbringing and without appreciating that, didn’t translate over well. As with this song, the melodic fluidity of the lyrics en Español are much more conducive to the story being shown than the actual English translation.

"Colombia, Mi Encanto" is a full song used as a background song, and "Two Oruguitas" is an English translation of "Dos Oruguitas" sung in the credits of the movie.

They keep growing, they don't know when

    Time keeps changing
    Inseparable are
    Time keeps changing
Oh little caterpillars, don't hold on anymore
You have to grow apart and come back
    Forward you will carry on
    Miracles come, chrysalis come
You have to leave and build your own future
Oh little caterpillars, don't hold on anymore
You have to grow apart and come back
    Forward you will carry on
    Miracles come, chrysalis come
You have to leave and build your own future
    Two disoriented caterpillars
    In two well-wrapped cocoons
    With new dreams
All you have to do is do what is necessary
In the world that keeps changing
    Knocking down its walls
    Here comes our miracle
    Our miracle
    Our miracle
    Our miracle
Ay butterflies, do not hold on anymore
You have to grow apart and come back
    Forward you will carry on
They are already miracles, breaking chrysalis
You have to fly, you have to find

Lin-Manuel Miranda is so great at creating story/plot/emotional load-bearing lyrics that I feel bad for Jason Restituto getting huge chunks of the movie’s emotional payoffs spoiled by, not only listening to the songs ahead of watching the entire movie, but *watching* actual clips of the songs.

My above comment is even more apt for the other Encanto songs that are in English.
Also, in this particular song, the story visuals are so arresting and the plot of what is happening onscreen is so powerful that, even though Jason is normally A+ at listening to and explaining the music production/arrangement that is happening at any given point, in this case there were large chunks here where he was so engrossed on following along the story that he would forget about explaining what we were hearing.
Not a criticism. The same would happen to me on a first watch. ☺️😋

I haven't finished your video but I wanted to say something. It's interesting how you talk about the silhouette of the mood and the darkness of the moment. The men on the horses threatened the people with swords, when in reality those are rifles. Of course, being a Disney movie, they had to change that a little. Even though those details are only understood by adults the tension and sadness of the moment is palpable, Abuela's crying on the ground with her babies, that scene was just magnificent and still gives me chills.

No, those are not meant to be rifles, those are “machetes”, that are a kind of Bowie knives used in colombian rural towns and mountains to work the land, but are also well known to be used as weapons by violent ilegal groups that have killed so many people

#Colombia had been affected by wars since long before the independence of my country during the 1.810's, but #LaViolencia (The Violence) from 1.948 up to today, has affected my country so much, that we have now over 8 million victims dead and alive.
There is not a family in Colombia that had been not affected by the conflict, rich and poor alike. That is the reason this song touch us #Colombians so much, due is the history of our ancestors or abuelos and abuelas or even our parents, uncles and aunts, cousins and older siblings, is the history of those who could escape.

"Two caterpillars in love, pass their nights and early mornings full of hunger,
they keep going and browsing a world that changes and keep changing (again the same verse)
Two caterpillars, stop the wind while they hug with feelings,
they keep growing they don't know when to find a corner, time keeps changing, they are inseparable, time keeps changing
ay caterpillars, do not hold it back they have to grow part and come back, you'll have to go forward, miracles come and chyrsalis too, they have to leave and build their own future
ay caterpillars, do not hold it back they have to grow part and come back, you'll have to go forward
miracles come and chyrsalis too, they have to leave and build their own future (yes this part was too times straight)
two caterpillars, disoriented in two cocoons, well sheltered
    grandma alma and mirabel talk
ay butterflies, do not hold it back they have to grow part and come back, you'll have to go forward, now there are miracles, breaking chyrsalis they have to fly, they have to find their own future
Well there is it :) maybe some parts do not have sense but it's becuase the whole song it's a methaphore and it's difficult to traduct it

You can't believe they killed Abuelo Pedro? Have you ever watched a Disney movie? Bambi's mother, Nemo's mother, Cinderella, Elsa and Anna, & Snow White (both parents for each), Disney has a history of killing off parents to further the story so Pedro's death is not a shock at all.

    Oruguitas = Little Caterpillars.
That is more clear at the end when the song changes Oruguitas to Mariposa = Butterflies.
The song is a metaphor of immigration with the process of caterpillars going to metamorphosis and becoming butterflies.
