Nice job! Think that was a great idea. I have the same problem with my surface plate getting covered in crap (not ideal...I know.) This project has inspired me to build something similar, which is amazing because I’m pretty much uninspirable...or so I’ve been told. 🤙
It makes a huge difference. Before I used it maybe once a month because it took effort to move things and clean up, now I use it almost daily. So long as you can train yourself not to place stuff on the hinged lid! (I actually considered a sloped lid to prevent using it as storage)
Love it. My surface plate is a lot smaller, and it's always covered in dust. I did just fix up the lighting near it though. I actually cringed when I saw you drilling through the MDF cover and into the granite. Then I realised the granite was somewhere else. Phew. I've seen those little welding mag tab things on Jody's channel. What you you think of them?
It's very convenient now, always ready to go. Yeah I'd never do something like that, try to take care of it, although I got a bit excited with super glue on the light strip (the double stick didn't like the paint it seems) I had to break out acetone and wipes afterwards. I'm experimenting with them, they seem good for holding parts in weird places so far
Great videos mate. Good to see Aussie machinist videos
Cheers Tristan 😀
Man. I came on UA-cam searching exactly for this.
Awesome! I hope it helped / gave some ideas
Great vid. The too-short lighting strip is an easy fix: cut another length and join it on - the round dots can be soldered to short jumper wires.
Yeah I should fix it, for balanced aesthetics if nothing else!
TommyGun, that new surface plates is awesome. I wan't one now. Soooooooo jealous ;-)
If ever you do get one I'd recommend setting up a lid like this, it's always ready to go now. I practically use it daily.
Thanks for stopping by
Nice. You created a good surface to put your coffee machine on :-)
Cheers Rustinox. Nah the CNC router has now become the dumping area for stuff

looks good. still gotta move stuff off the lid tho!
I actually considered an angled top so that it is impossible to put junk there!
Now my temporary junk storage is on the CNC router lol
The surface plate is not a shelf ;)
Great setup Tom, love the back lighting, adds a nice touch. Yes, ninja sticks, it must be a disease that all CNC routers spread to their uses.
Cam
Cheers Cam, lights were an extra but overall the setup is so convenient now
The sticks are better than using fingers at least!

Yeah - it looks the business.
I might give those magnets a go then.
Cheers. Craig
Great idea.
Thanks John! It's working well for me
Please replace the Strip with a right length one. Make Things correct...
I know!
Tell you what, I'll fix it this weekend
