The Trifecta of Canadian culture. The Hip, The Trailer Park boys, and the Don!

One of my favorite that doesn't get enough respect.
Very cool video for us in Canada, makes you smile.

Don Cherry, Trailer Park Boys, snow and ice.....ah it's a Canadian thing, you wouldn't understand ☺. Seriously though, it's a very good Hip song and I like it a lot, great bass line running through it and just the enough guitars throughout and great vocals from Gord. Keep in mind when looking at album sales, the U.S. is more than ten times the market compared to Canada, we just hit 40 million people barely the population of California and I would think most of the album sales for the band would be in Canada. Thanks Todd, thanks Justin

Perhaps I should listen to it through earbuds because I couldn't make out hardly any bass. I felt the recruitment of the Trailer Park Boys and Don Cherry was an attempt to hide how weak the song really was, a distraction of sorts. While watching the video, I found my attention drifting away from the song and focusing on the bizarre antics in the video.

@@chrisw2546 Hey Chris, I think its a great little song, the bass line is just perfectly in the background, not overwhelming at all it's just adding nicely to the rhythm of the song. For me the whole song has a real nice groove to it. Cheers, enjoy.

    Because I'm a nerd...
Average audience for Monday Night Football (MNF) is approximately 10-12 million people. The US has a population of 331 million, so 3.0 - 3.6% if the population watches MNF. Hockey Night in Canada ranges from 1-2 million viewers. Canada has a population of 39 million people, so 2.5 to 5.0 % of the population of Canada watches Hockey Night in Canada. The comparison is apt, but by sheer population numbers, MNF has more viewers.
Trailer Park boys and Don Cherry in a Hip video is quintessential Canadiana. In Violet Light is a great album. It wasn't nearly as popular on the radio, etc., but it has great songs on it.

I really like Gord's vocals on this one. Good song and of course the video with all the Canadian references. The cleaning of frost on the inside of window of the car. Reminds me of old times back in the 70's going to the pub then coming out in -30C and scraping the frost off the inside of the window on my friend's old Datsun. Good times! 😂
I think you need to show Kitty this video! 😹🐈‍⬛🐔

Just noticed something. The money flashed at the beginning (for the first chicken bucket sale) was decades old and no long used (by then, we’d switched over to dollar coins (which we call loonies, because they usually have a loon on one side) and two dollar coins (which we call toonies because they have a polar bear on one side … I know, that makes no sense, but context is everything!)).

Your intuition was correct, record Hockey Night in Canada viewership 9.8 Million, average viewership for Monday night football has been several million more than that for each of the last 8 yrs (at least).

Never got into the hip. But I thought I would check this out. Really cool video. Cool information about how Napster and streaming destroyed the music industry. In the US, I’m sure a lot of the border states and cities know Don Cherry and hockey night in Canada. In Detroit, everyone knew Don Cherry. His opinions were controversial, but not extreme. When he was fired, that was Canada‘s version of cancel culture. The song is not bad. Gives me R.E.M vibes.

As a Canadian, I have mixed thoughts on Tragically Hip. I don't have any recordings, I didn't need to, all I had to do was turn on the radio. They were Canada's House Band, were they the most talented, NO obviously, they weren't the most creative, innovative, hard rocking or exciting live act. But like having a hot chocolate on a cold -30 night, they were mighty comforting.

I kind of lost interest in keeping up with The Hip after Music @ Work. It was a good album, but after that they didn’t feel essential. I might need to go back and catch up.
Thinking about an American Don Cherry analogue, maybe Stephen A Smith?

Would love to see more early Hip. For me, its kind of like Rush.

    • @SnowDogisVictorious
      @SnowDogisVictorious Рік тому +3

Me too re: loss of interest post-Music@Work, actually. Also, by that point life had intervened and it was hard to keep up with musical interests. I'd often go months without listening to any music.
I still attended Rush and Blue Rodeo concerts throughout, but not the Hip. I really regret not having seen them during the final concert tour, especially since they played London. My wife lost interest after Road Apples, however, and we were already booked to see Blue Rodeo in Toronto right around the same time. So... I didn't go.
      : (
In fact, the Blue Rodeo concert turned out to be the same night as the Hip's final show in Kingston. Throughout the evening, they'd flash CBC coverage of the Hip in between Blue Rodeo songs.
Towards the end of their show, Blue Rodeo actually did a solid cover of Bobcaygeon, which I was fortunate enough to have recorded on my phone. It's up on UA-cam somewhere...
