    When The Hip played Saturday Night Live, Gord sang "He said I'm Tragically Hip" by mistake instead of saying "I'm Fabulously Rich". Realizing this worked for the song He began to begin it that way since.

    This is in British Columbia, the way he moves on stage is awesome. This song is probably my favourite Tragically Hip song.
    You must check out another live version of this song in your own time or here to share. It's pretty intense as it his final tour. The look on his face is heartbreaking because he knew his fate and he knew he was loved by Canada. He was a humble human being. Search for Tragically Hip - Grace, Too (Toronto, Aug. 14, 2016)

    I had the good fortune of seeing The Hip perform live multiple times. And have watched countless recordings of their performances, this is by far the most intense version of Grace,Too I've ever seen. It is a testament to the tightness (and trust) of the band as they keep the song's original pace as Downie manages to perform this frantic magic to his own time signature. You should check out a studio version to appreciate the difference.

    This was the first song they did the only time I saw them in person (on their second last tour). It helped me develop a new appreciation for the song and the album (Day for Night) it came from, which I had not really gotten into as much as their earlier ones. In concert, as with most of their repertoire, Gord brings this to a whole other stratosphere!

    As I am now in my 70s I have a great appreciation for these 🇨🇦 artists that I paid no attention to when younger. The Hip and Gordon Lightfoot are two I am enjoying much more now than I did years ago and that is partly because of UA-cam. It is so great their music will be here forever. I enjoy all genres of music( except maybe rap🤣) and enjoy my favourite reviewers discovering some of these artists for the first time.
    And Gord was right about wearing your lifejacket. We have had so many lose their life this summer here in Ontario because they drowned. They would probably be alive if they had worn a life jacket while on the water.
    ❤ from a 🇨🇦 Grammy.

      @moon4music 4 місяці тому

      Yes, there are many drownings here in Central Ontario, lakes and rivers are everywhere. Many people don't wear a life jacket when swimming which is huge in my neck of the woods which is actually where Gordon Lightfoot was from 😊. There are currents in bodies of water around here and that can be dangerous and take lives. 🇨🇦

    There were two versions of Gord. The studio very focused Gord. And then the live Gord. He would often go off on tangents or as you see here add extra flair to the song. It added to the songs. One of his most famous riffs was talking for 20 minutes about a whale. I think it was a concert in California. It might still be on their channel.

    He sings different on the album track, but that's just Gord - he really gets lost in the music when he's on stage. If you start watching more of their live performances you will come to realize that he's one of the greatest frontmen ever. Something he often did was going off on kind of "stream of consciousness" rants in mid-song, with the band jamming along; quite often these would result in new songs down the line. Amazing stuff.

    The Tragically Hip - Canada's best kept secret!

  • @CiPhEr505
    @CiPhEr505 4 місяці тому

    That riff in the beginning is actually the bass guitar! The Tragically Hip are a garage band - they're HS buddies that liked playing music... and basically started out from jamming after school
    They have two guitars - the "lead/rhythm" formats are instead more fluid. There's some pretty notable bands have actually made use of this format - Metallica, AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynrd, early Rolling Stones, and early Beatles with both guitarists good at either lead or rhythm... that sometimes end up playing "both". The sound that gets made as a result is pretty damn cool
    Consider @1:40 and @7:13 , Rob Baker - official "lead guitarist" (who plays rhythm for Grace, Too) and Paul Langois will actively complement each other's licks... while still playing the song👍

    Gord Downie was one of the greatest frontmen of all time. Dancing was never part of the song... Gord would just rock out to his own songs. "His energy" was always "you - the one listening"
    With a late-stage incurable brain cancer, barely able to even remember lines, Downie said "fuck it - let's do One. Last. Tour." all across 🍁... and "Grace, too" was their last song.
    The Hip were never sellouts - rather than try and "make it in America", they deliberately decided to keep making their music instead. They were always donating something to charity... and never lived as rockstars. A Diamond, octuple Platinum band... and they all live in middle-class homes, looking like you and I
