Stormtroopers are my favourite core unit in Legion. I always take Fragmentation grenades, a DLT-19 and Recon Intel. I keep moving them to the closest enemy unit and throw 7 red dice. A combination of an E-Web throwing suppression, terrain cover and red defence dice keeps them going. Their function is in their name, historically stormtroopers closed to assault the enemy.
You prolly dont give a damn but does someone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly forgot the password. I love any tricks you can offer me!
@Mordechai Misael Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im in the hacking process now. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
as someone just getting into this game(way too late), this was really helpful. I've been sold on Snowtroopers but slowly coming around on Stormtroopers. This was a helpful overview!! Thanks!!
Crabbok, I'm copyright striking you for video format! Just kidding. I'm glad you're jumping into in-depth unit reviews. This kind of discussion is my favorite aspect of wargaming.
I have only played a couple of games using the Empire, but Stormtroopers are one of my favorite units, mostly because when they are painted correctly, they can be quite terrifying. If you put yourself in the position of the Rebel and think like a Rebel, then the shear number of the Stormtroopers can be a bit intimidating. This breakdown will help me with setting up a better loadout for hopefully a better outcome than my last couple. Thank you for this.
I think one thing to really consider in the comparison between Stormtroopers and Shoretroopers is that they differ in the kinds of support they benefit from the most. Shoretoopers are great in that Target can supply their own aims, but they need those orders to keep coming to get them. Stormtroopers on the other hand get more mileage out of aims received from other sources and have little need for orders, but also can also be somewhat reliant on them just to shoot through cover. So, on the one hand there's the common list building paradigm where orders intentionally aren't really important but wants individually strong units and thus caters to Shoretroopers, but then there's also starting with a backbone of Stormtroopers and perhaps swapping out one of the "mandatory" snipers for an officer and having full squads where there'd otherwise be mortars that are mostly just there to be activation padding. Sidenote: I stand by the T-21 because it doesn't matter what color the dice are if a 6-man squad with an aim rolls/rerolls 12 dice total with Critical 2; that effectively throws 3 crits on average.
Great video as always! I’d second the request for more Legion unit breakdowns/builds in the future. Also, I know you do a good number of total army list builds, but have you considered doing some for skirmish games? A skirmish match is sometimes easier to setup and run, but I don’t see a ton of suggestions for skirmish list building.
After Shoretroopers became available, they became the go-to Corps unit because of their black dice, and Stormtroopers were relegated to padding out armies. White dice are too risky and it feels like the only way to make Stormtroopers viable is to add expensive Heavy Weapons. Ever since the Clone Wars factions were released, I've wondered if Stormtroopers should be more akin to B1 Battle Droids because the Empire can afford to spam out cannonfodder, so their points cost should actually be lower than Rebel Troopers. If Stormtroopers were cheaper but their Heavy Weapon and Personnel cost more, I think it would balance out. It would be interesting to playtest cheaper Stormtroopers and see if they feel and play more thematically: Being terrible shots and getting massacred by Rebel heroes. However, Stormtroopers feel like a poor point investment, which is why Imperial players have been favouring Shoretroopers. But I'd like to use my Stormtroopers more often.
The heavy weapons options and what they do a weird from a thematic perspective. Why does the DLT-19 have impact and the T-21 doesn't even have penetration? When I look at this weapons I think the following regarding roles: E-11: Carbine/smg (standard) DLT-19: full length rifle (mainly because of its similarirty to the DC-15) (alternative, stronger, more cumbersome standard. Rewards aimed fire?) RT-97C: SAW/LMG (lots of shots, suppression) T-21: Battle Rifle (hard hitter) HH-12: That's obvious (also isn't that a rebel weapon in R1?) Their rules however don't reflect that at all. Might be a fault in my interpretation, but some things still just don't line up with the guns depiction.
I went through this video like "I don't agree with this, this this and this and this", but then like half of my issues were addressed, so I guess I'm fine. Although, there are a few points I'd like to make. 1. I agree that Gideon is much better in Snowtropers, but Del Meeko is a valid choice in Stormies. A number of imperial armor lists run both snipers, to boost activation count, and an astromech as a failsafe. Del works well in such list, and Storms are definitely a valid platform for him. It's like if you took a dlt and a droid (what you would normally do), but with Lethal :) 2. Storms are awesome in melee. Like, really, really good - both black attack w/surge and red defense are strong assets. Sure, they lack charge, but they are a good and cheap tarpit unit, that has the upper hand over snows in that they can be faster. Running them naked as a blocker unit is valid, but with Specialist and either cables or envo gear (or both) they become a surprisingly fast unit with the ability to punch with free aim or get tanky with surge. Will they withstand a Luke? No, of course not. But the likes of Sabine, possibly Wookies - why not? And they will block most of the annoying, shooty infantry units. This melee aspect I believe to be most underappreciated about the Storms. Well, maybe they'll get a shield and baton "riot control" trooper as a heavy weapon choice in the future, and that will show people more of that side of this unit. 3. Electrobinculars and Portable Scanner on Stormies are in my opinion trap cards. With equal cost, the "follow Vader with heals and tokens" role is better filled with snows, who can maintain a little bit of offence while doing so.
Good video, I do feel that Storms with HH-12 rocket and specialist is definitely an underrated build, Sure the rocket probably will not fire round 1 but you can get them in a good position near a rear objective and cover. Then let them shoot aimed rocket shots rest of the game. Free action exhaust for aim, then shoot and recover for both the rocket and specialist.
Thanks for the tip. The HH-12 gives me good memories from old Battlefront games. I would go with one unit as you described and another with just a DLT-19 with Hunter to form my rear guard. What does exhaust mean?
@@DioBrando-jm7uf Exhaust actions are the ones with the "turning arrow" it means that option to use is expended until the unit preforms a recover action to reset it's gear (reloading the rocket and the ability of the Stormtrooper specialist to get an aim)
@@DioBrando-jm7uf Cycle is the ability for a weapon to recover itself if you skip it for an activation. So the AAT fires at a target with its main cannon and rockets (which exhausts the rockets) at the end of the next activation for the AAT the rockets will reset without having to take a recover action.
See, I see Precise on Stormtroopers as a bit of a trap. Even surging white dice are 2/8 to hit. Their benefit is they "swing" wildly. Connecting on large dice pools is great, but probably happens once per game. Those Red Save are far more reliable. I like to build my Storms as objective takers with E-Gear and possibly an extra generic trooper, points budget providing, and sit on the objective.
like this video. I play empire and storms are the main unit, at least 5 since you need activations and they really can survive with red defence dice. Yes, they can't shoot that great but in front, you can have them block the important units to deliver the killing blow ( AT ST or Gav ). HH12 does need modification, but i still like to include 1 or 2 just to give me some good anti vehicle punch, chances of not seeing a CIS AAT are few and far between ( due to cheap unit cost of droids ).
I usually play Rebels while my friend plays Empire, there have been so many times those White Dice have pushed a sneaky crit through heavy cover and taken down my troopers or even mandos. I agree Stormtroopers are cheap and offer a lot of utility, definitely worth running!
Great video - sums them up nicely, though if you are going to load for bear I think the T-21 pips out the RT-97C - if the aim is to go Max dice at a target you don’t need the extra range and you are going to be re-rolling anyway so you don’t really need the red
I think they should be like TIE Fighters in X-Wing, something you can use a swarm of and it works, but isn't always the best against certain builds. I really don't like how much shoretroopers have overtaken them.
I disagree on your Smoke grenades take. Maybe its because I play more skirmish games as clones, against droids, with few LOS-breaking terrains, but I find that smokes are good for keeping my boys alive against the hail of droid fire as i try and close the distance to the objective. I'd happily put a 6 point (I think its 2 point now) grenade on my otherwise naked clones in order to turn away a few more hits that could have offed my boys.
